Search

Quantum thermal machines can generate steady-state entanglement by harvesting spontaneous interactions with local environments. However, using minimal resources and control, the entanglement is typically weak. Here, we study entanglement generation in a two-qubit quantum thermal machine in the presence of a continuous feedback protocol. Each qubit is measured continuously and the outcomes are used for real-time feedback to control the local system-environment interactions. We show that there exists an ideal operation regime where the quality of entanglement is significantly improved, to the extent that it can violate standard Bell inequalities and uphold quantum teleportation. In agreement with (Khandelwal et al 2020 New J. Phys. 22 073039), we also find, for ideal operation, that the heat current across the system is proportional to the entanglement concurrence. In this review, motivated by the recent interest in high-temperature materials, we review our recent progress in theories of lattice dynamics in and out of equilibrium. To investigate thermodynamic properties of anharmonic crystals, the self-consistent phonon theory was developed, mainly in the 1960s, for rare gas atoms and quantum crystals. We have extended this theory to investigate the properties of the equilibrium state of a crystal, including its unit cell shape and size, atomic positions and lattice dynamical properties. Using the equation-of-motion method combined with the fluctuation–dissipation theorem and the Donsker–Furutsu–Novikov (DFN) theorem, this approach was also extended to investigate the non-equilibrium case where there is heat flow across a junction or an interface. We solve a kinetic, space-dependent problem in an insulator/ferromagnet/insulator heterostructure in the presence of a magnetic field. At the same time, to interpret experiments on thermal transfer across ferromagnet / insulator boundaries, the Little acoustic mismatch theory is usually used, in which the temperature jump at the interface is determined only by the acoustic characteristics of the medium. We show that the theory of acoustic mismatch is convenient only for sufficiently thick insulating ferromagnets. Of the greatest interest to us is the opposite limiting case of thin ferrodielectric films, where the role of magnons in the formation of a temperature jump at the ferromagnet/insulator interface becomes decisive. We show that for T ≪ ΘD a nonlinear heat flux Q crossing the ferrodielectric/insulator interface, both the size effect and its decreasing dependence on the external magnetic field increase. Namely, Q depends on the magnetic properties of thin heated ferromagnetic films, and the role of magnons is essential in the heat transfer regime, which we call magnon overheating. On the contrary, for thick heated layers of a ferromagnet, Q can be described by the Little formula, which does not take into account the magnetic properties of the ferromagnet layer. We generalize time-evolving matrix product operators method to nonequilibrium quantum transport problems. The nonequilibrium current is obtained via numerical differentiation of the generating functional which is represented as a tensor network. The approach is numerically exact and the non-Markovian effects are fully taken into account. In the transport process, a part of the heat that flows out from a bath flows into the system and other baths, and the rest is stored in the system-bath coupling part. We take the spin-boson model as a demonstration to show the details of this heat flowing and the establishment of a steady current between two baths.

We explore the phase-dependent charge and heat current in short Josephson junctions (JJs) with two normal metal regions attached at opposite ends, formed at helical edge states of two-dimensional topological insulators. For all finite phases, an asymmetry appears around the zero energy in the transmission spectra except for $\phi\! = \!n\phi_0$ , where n is a half-integer and φ _0 ( $ = 2\pi$ ) is the flux quantum. The phase-induced asymmetry plays a key role in inducing charge and heat current through the thermally biased junction. However, the current amplitudes are sensitive to the size of the junction. We show that in the short JJ when subject to a temperature gradient, the charge current shows an odd symmetry in phase. It indicates that the phase-tunable asymmetry around the zero energy is not sufficient to induce a dissipative thermoelectric current in the junction. This is in contrast to the behavior of long JJ, as shown in the literature. The phase-tunable heat currents are obtained with amplitudes set by the phase difference, base temperature, and system size.

In this paper, we present the results obtained from our study on the heat current across double quantum dots in serial coupled to ferromagnetic leads (FM-DQDs-FM), when the leads magnetic moments are in antiparallel configuration. This study was done by using nonequilibrium Green's function method in the linear response regime. Our results are calculated in weak interdot coupling regime by taking all the parameters that affect the system such as intradot Coulomb correlation energy, spin–spin exchange interaction, and spin polarization on the leads. These results are accomplished as a function of temperature gradient as well as quantum dots energy levels. According to our results, it is noticed that the values of intradot Coulomb correlation energy and the spin–spin exchange interaction have significant impact on increasing the heat current that flows through our system. It is concluded that increasing or decreasing the magnitude of heat current in negative or positive thermal bias is ideal for designing high-efficiency heat diode. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study theoretically the properties of local heat originated from energy exchange between electrons passing through a quantum dot (QD) coupled to a phonon bath. The dot is sandwiched between two normal metal leads and also side-coupled to Majorana bound states (MBSs) formed at opposite ends of a topological superconductor nanowire. We find that in addition to the negative differential of heat generation (NDHG) in the Coulomb blockade regime, another NDHG emerges near the leads’ Fermi level due to the dot-MBS coupling. This dual NDHG effect is robust against the variation of intradot Coulomb interaction strength, and disappears if the QD is coupled to regular Fermions. Direct hybridization between the MBSs reduces their impacts on the electronic transport processes, and eliminates the dual NDHG effect. Our results show that the dual NDHG effect is quite efficient for inferring the existence of MBSs, and may remedy some limitations of the detection schemes relying on tunneling spectroscopy technique.

We show that in the linear response approximation only entropy provides coupling between thermal and electric phenomena. The dissipationless quantum currents — magnetization, superconducting, persistent and topological edge currents — do not produce and transfer entropy and may be excluded from final formulas for thermomagnetic coefficients. The magnetization energy flux, c M × E , in crossed electric and magnetic fields strongly modifies the Poynting vector in magnetic materials and metamaterials, but do not contribute to the heat current. Calculating entropy fluxes of fluctuating Cooper pairs in pure and disordered superconductors, we obtained the fluctuation Nernst coefficient proportional to k B T / F ( F is the Fermi energy). We also introduce the thermomagnetic entropy per unit charge and derive the Nernst coefficient proportional to the difference of the thermoelectric and thermomagnetic entropies. This explains the Sondheimer cancellation and high sensitivity of thermomagnetic phenomena to correlations. In 2D superconductors, the transport entropy transferred by a vortex moving through the background formed by vortex–antivortex pairs is the configuration entropy of k B ⋅ ln 2 , which strongly exceeds the intrinsic entropy of vortex core. Beyond the linear response, the nonentropic forces can lead to phenomena unexpected from thermodynamics, such as vortex attraction to the moving hot spot. Whether genuine quantum effects, particularly quantum coherences, can offer an advantage to quantum devices is a topic of much interest. Here, we study a minimal model, the three-level V system coupled to two heat baths, and investigate the role of quantum coherences in heat transport in both the transient regime and in the nonequilibrium steady-state. In our model, energy is exchanged between the baths through two parallel pathways, which can be made distinct through the nondegeneracy of excited levels (energy splitting Δ) and a control parameter α , which adjusts the strength of one of the arms. Using a nonsecular quantum master equation of Redfield form, we succeed in deriving closed-form expressions for the quantum coherences and the heat current in the steady state limit for closely degenerate excited levels. By including three ingredients in our analysis: nonequilibrium baths, nondegeneracy of levels, and asymmetry of pathways, we show that quantum coherences are generated and sustained in the V model in the steady-state limit if three conditions, conjoining thermal and coherent effects are simultaneously met: (i) the two baths are held at different temperatures. (ii) Bath-induced pathways do not interfere destructively. (iii) Thermal rates do not mingle with the control parameter α to destroy interference through an effective local equilibrium condition. Particularly, we find that coherences are maximized when the heat current is suppressed. Although we mainly focus on analytical results in the steady state limit, numerical simulations reveal that the transient behavior of coherences contrasts the steady-state limit: large long-lived transient coherences vanish at steady state, while weak short-lived transient coherences survive, suggesting that different mechanisms are at play in these two regimes. Enhancing either the lifetime of transient coherences or their magnitude at steady state thus requires the control and optimization of different physical parameters.

We consider the problem of heat transport by vibrational modes between Langevin thermostats connected by a central device. The latter is anharmonic and can be subject to large temperature difference and thus be out of equilibrium. We develop a classical formalism based on the equation of motion method, the fluctuation–dissipation theorem and the Novikov theorem to describe heat flow in a multi-terminal geometry. We show that it is imperative to include a quartic term in the potential energy to insure stability and to properly describe thermal expansion. The latter also contributes to leading order in the thermal resistance, while the usually adopted cubic term appears in the second order. This formalism paves the way for accurate modeling of thermal transport across interfaces in highly non-equilibrium situations beyond perturbation theory.

The possibility of using sprayed water jets is established, primarily radial air jets, in vertical and horizontal planes in order to reduce the temperature of the burning Liquefied Petroleum Gas, starting from the cut-off of its expiration into free space. Various technical means of supplying water in a spray and spray nozzles for their creation, which are used in solving the problem of reducing the temperature of the burning Liquefied Petroleum Gas are viewed. It has been established that the active phase of the sprayed water jet is most effective (0,5-0,75 of the lengths), which, acting under the cut of the flame is crushed to a finely dispersed phase under the influence of a high-speed gas jet. As can be seen from the above, the heating rate of the finely dispersed water phase is increased up to the gaseous state, which leads to a decrease of the temperature of the flame in its middle combustion zone. Consequently, in the flame temperature will be much lower than the temperature of the flame cone, and, as a result, close to the extinction temperature. The authors recommend the use of modern jet-forming devices to realize this goal – nozzles NRT-5, NRT-10, NRT-20, NRS, as well as hand nozzles of the kind RSK-50, RS-А, RS-B, PROTEK. In order to cool, for example, one horizontal ground steel tank on both sides, it is necessary to use at least two hydraulic guns, which will act as maneuvering. In this case, the flow of water from the hydraulic gun with a diameter of the nozzle 25 mm will be from 16 to 18 liters per second. Therefore, the task is to find, calculate and experimentally prove the efficiency of the thermal screen, which is created in the form of a moving water surface that can effectively protect a particular physical object from the thermal impact of the heat zone. In order to reduce the flow of water to cool the tanks, the authors suggest using the NRS to create radial (flat) water jets. Application of such a nozzle allows to increase the area of simultaneous cooling of the maximum surface area per unit time due to the expansion of the angle of the spray jet spark. The water consumption does not exceed 13 liters per second.

We study a scheme of thermal management where a three-qubit system assisted with a coherent auxiliary bath (CAB) is employed to implement heat management on a target thermal bath (TTB). We consider the CAB/TTB being ensemble of coherent/thermal two-level atoms (TLAs), and within the framework of collision model investigate the characteristics of steady heat current (also called target heat current (THC)) between the system and the TTB. It demonstrates that with the help of the quantum coherence of ancillae the magnitude and direction of heat current can be controlled only by adjusting the coupling strength of system-CAB. Meanwhile, we also show that the influences of quantum coherence of ancillae on the heat current strongly depend on the coupling strength of system—CAB, and the THC becomes positively/negatively correlated with the coherence magnitude of ancillae when the coupling strength below/over some critical value. Besides, the system with the CAB could serve as a multifunctional device integrating the thermal functions of heat amplifier, suppressor, switcher and refrigerator, while with thermal auxiliary bath it can only work as a thermal suppressor. Our work provides a new perspective for the design of multifunctional thermal device utilizing the resource of quantum coherence from the CAB.

We study the steady-state entanglement and heat current of two coupled qubits, in which one qubit is connected with either two baths with the different temperature or a bath. We construct the master equation in the eigenstate representation of two coupled qubits to describe the dynamics and derive the solutions in the steady-state with strong coupling regime between them. We have demonstrated the variations of the steady-state entanglement with respect to various parameters of the system in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium cases. We find that the coupling strengths and the energy detuning as well as the temperature gradient are beneficial to the enhancement of the entanglement in equilibrium case. In the nonequilibrium case, the temperature gradient has different effects on entanglement due to the temperature of the bath(s) which the qubits touch. We also study the heat current and their variations with the energy detuning, coupling strengths and diverse low temperature. The energy detuning has a positive (negative) effect on the heat current in the low (high) temperature; heat current also have different trends with coupling strengths increases for a given temperature. In this paper we consider a bipartite system composed of two subsystems each coupled to its own thermal environment. Based on a collision model, we mainly study whether the approximation (i.e., the inter-system coupling is ignored when modeling the system–environment interaction) is valid or not. We also address the problem of heat transport unitedly for both excitation-conserving system–environment interactions and non-excitation-conserving system–environment interactions. For the former interaction, as the inter-system interaction strength increases, at first this approximation gets worse as expected, but then counter-intuitively gets better even for a stronger inter-system coupling. For the latter interaction with asymmetry, this approximation gets progressively worse. In this case we realize a perfect thermal rectification, and we cannot find an apparent rectification effect for the former interaction. Finally and more importantly, our results show that whether this approximation is valid or not is closely related to the quantum correlations between the subsystems, i.e., the weaker the quantum correlations, the more justified the approximation and vice versa.

We theoretically investigate the phase-dependent heat transport of a temperature-biased granular Josephson junction in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We illustrate the influence of geometry of the junction on the thermal current. The use of granular Josephson junction rather than bulk one makes significant changes in the heat current behavior. The heat current diffraction pattern of the rectangular, circular and annular geometries with no trapped fluxons demonstrates similar to the current of s-wave superconducting junction. By increasing the number of trapped fluxon, the pattern of current behaves such as d-wave superconducting junction. The feasibility of using granular superconductors, with different geometries, controlled by the magnetic field provides an appropriate tool to obtain the desired result for a specific application. We analyze heat current fluctuations between electrons and phonons in a metal. In equilibrium we recover the standard result consistent with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Here we show that heat current noise at finite frequencies remains non-vanishing down to zero temperature. From the experimental point of view, it is a small effect and up to now elusive. We briefly discuss the impact of electron-phonon heat current fluctuations on calorimetry, particularly in the regime of single microwave-photon detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Autonomous entanglement engines have recently been proposed to generate steady-state bipartite and multipartite entanglement exploiting only incoherent interactions with thermal baths at different temperatures. In this work, we investigate the interplay between heat current and entanglement in a two-qubit entanglement engine, deriving a critical heat current for successful operation of the engine, i.e. a cut-off above which entanglement is present. The heat current can thus be seen as a witness to the presence of entanglement. In the regime of weak-inter-qubit coupling, we also investigate the effect of two experimentally relevant parameters for the qubits, the energy detuning and tunnelling, on the entanglement production. Finally, we show that the regime of strong inter-qubit coupling provides no clear advantage over the weak regime, in the context of out-of-equilibrium entanglement engines.

We explore the quantum metrology in an optical molecular system coupled to two environments with different temperatures, using a quantum master equation beyond secular approximation. We discover that the steady-state coherence originating from and sustained by the nonequilibrium condition can enhance quantum metrology. We also study the quantitative measures of the nonequilibrium condition in terms of the curl flux, heat current and entropy production at the steady state. They are found to grow with temperature difference. However, an apparent paradox arises considering the contrary behaviors of the steady-state coherence and the nonequilibrium measures in relation to the inter-cavity coupling strength. This paradox is resolved by decomposing the heat current into a population part and a coherence part. Only the latter, the coherence part of the heat current, is tightly connected to the steady-state coherence and behaves similarly with respect to the inter-cavity coupling strength. Interestingly, the coherence part of the heat current flows from the low-temperature reservoir to the high-temperature reservoir, opposite to the direction of the population heat current. Our work offers a viable way to enhance quantum metrology for open quantum systems through steady-state coherence sustained by the nonequilibrium condition, which can be controlled and manipulated to maximize its utility. The potential applications go beyond quantum metrology and extend to areas such as device designing, quantum computation and quantum technology in general.

We analytically solve the steady-state model of the two interacted qubits respectively coupling to the nonequilibrium squeezed reservoir. This allows us to study the quantum entanglement, the local quantum uncertainty and the heat current easily. It is shown that the squeezing can effectively control the heat current between the two-qubit system and the reservoir. The large squeezing reduces the nonequilibrium concurrence but the local quantum uncertainty could be increased at low temperature by the squeezing in the asymmetric case. The results of numerical experiments that reveal a correlation between the thermal load and microstresses in ceramics upon wearing the tools are considered. Particular features of the deformation processes in the ceramics surface layer at temperatures T = 1100-1200°C, at which cutters equipped with the inserts from nitride ceramics pass over to an unstable operation regime, have been defined. We study the thermodynamic behaviours of a quantum four-level system in the steady-state regime by employing the master equation and the full counting statistics approach. It is found that the initial state can affect the steady state, thus some specific initial states can enable our system to behave as a perfect insulator irrespective of the working temperatures of the baths. In addition, we demonstrate that our system can work as multifunctional quantum thermal devices: amplifier , switch , and refrigerator. More importantly, one can control the power of these devices by preparing the initial state previously. The result also shows the noise power and thermodynamic uncertainty relation depend on both the initial state and time, and especially they will both diverge in the long-time limit. • The steady state with initial-state dependence in a degenerate system is proved. • An initial state enables a degenerate four-level system work as a perfect insulator. • Multifunctional quantum thermal device with initial-state dependence is achievable. Abstract: Using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, we study the phenomenon of negative differential thermal resistance (NDTR) in a double-chain system. We investigate the dependence of NDTR on the external potential, inter- and intra-chain interaction and the system size. It is reported that the NDTR can occur in a small double-chain system with weak external potential and weak inter- and intra-chain interaction. We also present the influence of the external potential, inter- and intra-chain interaction and the system size on the heat current of the system through the phonon spectral analysis. We report an experimental search for the enhancement of the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient ( β) of superfluid He near the superfluid transition by a heat current ( Q). The experiment was carried out using the hot volume technique at constant sample pressure of 1 bar. Liquid helium was contained in a thermal conductivity cell, and a constant heat current, Q=10 or 100 μW/cm, was supplied from below through the sample column. We performed a sample density calculation based on existing helium properties known in the literature and a proposed enhancement Δ β( Q). Both calculations, with or without the β enhancement, agree qualitatively with the measurement. The lack of definitive differentiation indicates that the β enhancement cannot be definitively resolved by our measurement in spite of applications of high-resolution thermometry and pressure regulation. By using Green's functional method, we investigated the influence of different strength constants at defected bonds and the junction's size on the transmission properties of the lattice wave in a one-dimensional chain. The heat currents of several defected chains are also calculated. The results show that correlation transmission between two defected bonds in a chain different from electron behaviors. Furthermore, for a large-size junction embedded in a chain, the transmission of high frequency phonons will disappear while having smaller strength constant in the junction than in two semi-infinity chains. On the other hand, for larger strength constant than in two semi-infinite chains, all phonons can transport through the junction with a certain transmission value, although the number of transmission peaks decreases. Finally, the lower frequency lattice waves have better transmission through a junction with a series of strength constants according to the Fibonacci sequence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study networks of interacting oscillators, driven at the boundary by heat baths at possibly different temperatures. A set of first elementary questions are discussed concerning the uniqueness of a stationary possibly Gibbsian density and the nature of the entropy production and the local heat currents. In this work, we develop a general gauge-invariant theory for AC heat current through multi-probe systems. Using the non-equilibrium Green’s function, a general expression for time-dependent electrothermal admittance is obtained where we include the internal potential due to the Coulomb interaction explicitly. We show that the gauge-invariant condition is satisfied for heat current if the self-consistent Coulomb interaction is considered. It is known that the Onsager relation holds for dynamic charge conductance. We show in this work that the Onsager relation for electrothermal admittance is violated, except for a special case of a quantum dot system with a single energy level. We apply our theory to a nano capacitor where the Coulomb interaction plays an essential role. We find that, to the first order in frequency, the heat current is related to the electrochemical capacitance as well as the phase accumulated in the scattering event.

The fluxonium qubit has arisen as one of the most promising candidate devices for implementing quantum information in superconducting devices, since it is both insensitive to charge noise (like flux qubits) and insensitive to flux noise (like charge qubits). Here, we investigate the stability of the quantum information to quasiparticle tunneling through a Josephson junction. Microscopically, this dephasing is due to the dependence of the quasiparticle transmission probability on the qubit state. We argue that on a phenomenological level the dephasing mechanism can be understood as originating from heat currents, which are flowing in the device due to possible effective temperature gradients, and their sensitivity to the qubit state. The emerging dephasing time is found to be insensitive to the number of junctions with which the superinductance of the fluxonium qubit is realized. Furthermore, we find that the dephasing time increases quadratically with the shunt-inductance of the circuit which highlights the stability of the device to this dephasing mechanism.
