ElectricalImpedance Myography (EIM) is an innovative, non-invasive technique offering a convenient means of localized exogenous electrophysiological recording. By measuring muscle impedance parameters, this method characterizes the physiological state of muscles, functioning as a biomarker for muscle contractility, injuries, and the progression of neuromuscular diseases. This paper provides an overview of the current state of EIM technology development, along with modeling and data analysis methods, focusing on their application requirements. It further highlights the advancements in EIM research within the realm of sports health, emphasizing its efficacy in identifying injuries and monitoring wound healing, and discusses existing technological limitations. Additionally, the paper explores future research directions. Serving as a transient biosensor during physical activity, EIM holds significant potential in sports health. It presents a promising alternative to invasive and costly clinical assessment methods, positioning itself as a viable personal monitoring tool for both professional athletes and fitness enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the resolution of technical challenges and the establishment of industry-standard implementation programs are essential prerequisites for EIM to evolve into a standard clinical assessment tool.

miRNAs alter significantly throughout pregnancy to support the development of the fetus. However, sensitive detection of miRNA remains a challenge. Herein, a reliable miRNA detection approach integrating self-assembly-triggered signal amplification and CRISPR-Cas12a-system cleavage-based color generation is described. The colorimetric approach contains three signal amplification processes. The first signal amplification is formed by the released miRNA in a chain extension process. The produced sequence that is similar to the target miRNA initiates the second signal recycle. Finally, CRISPR-Cas12a-based transcleavage on linker sequences induces the third signal amplification. The method exhibits high sensitivity and a low limit of detection of 254 aM, showing promising prospects in disease diagnosis.

Abstract Background Diabetes-associated cognitive dysfunction has become a major public health concern. However, the mechanisms driving this disease are elusive. Herein, we explored how electroacupuncture improves learning and memory function in diabetic rats. Methods The diabetic model was established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (STZ) in adult Sprague–Dawley rats. Rats were fed on high-fat and high-sugar diets. Learning and memory functions were assessed using behavioral tests. The hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, Western blotting, real-time PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) was performed to test related indicators. Results High-fat and high-sugar diets impaired learning and memory function in rats, while electroacupuncture treatment reversed these changes. The model group presented highly prolonged escape latency compared to the control group, indicating impaired learning and memory functions. The TEM examination showed that electroacupuncture enhanced Aβ clearance and mitochondrial autophagy in hippocampal neuronal cells by increasing DISC1 expression. Conclusions Electroacupuncture improves learning and memory function in diabetic rats by increasing DISC1 expression to promote mitophagy. This enhanced Aβ clearance, alleviating cytotoxicity in hippocampal neuronal cells.

Hereditary spherocytosis (HS), the most common inherited hemolytic anemia disorder, is characterized by osmotically fragile microspherocytic red cells with a reduced surface area on the peripheral blood smear. Pathogenic variants in five erythrocyte membrane structure-related genes ANK1 (Spherocytosis, type 1; MIM#182900), SPTB (Spherocytosis, type 2; MIM#616649), SPTA1 (Spherocytosis, type 3; MIM#270970), SLC4A1 (Spherocytosis, type 4; MIM#612653) and EPB42 (Spherocytosis, type 5; MIM#612690) have been confirmed to be related to HS. There have been many studies on the pathogenic variants and mechanisms of HS, however, studies on how to manage the transmission of HS to the next-generation have not been reported. In this study, we recruited a patient with HS. Targeted next-generation sequencing with a panel of 208 genes related to blood system diseases detected a novel heterozygous variant in the SPTB: c.300+2dup in the proband. Sanger sequencing of variant alleles and haplotype linkage analysis of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) based on next-generation sequencing were performed simultaneously. Five embryos were identified with one heterozygous and four not carrying the SPTB variant. Single-cell amplification and whole genome sequencing showed that three embryos had varying degrees of trisomy mosaicism. One of two normal embryos was transferred to the proband. Ultimately, a healthy boy was born, confirmed by noninvasive prenatal testing for monogenic conditions (NIPT-M) to be disease-free. This confirmed our successful application of PGT in preventing transmission of the pathogenic variant allele in the HS family.

Background Dual/double stimulation (DS) is an ovarian stimulation strategy that has emerged in recent years; it is characterized by two rounds of ovarian stimulation and oocyte retrieval in the same menstrual cycle. DS can greatly shorten the time required to obtain valid embryos in assisted reproduction. For fertility preservation, DS can speed up oocyte storage process. However, factors influencing luteal phase ovarian stimulation (LPS) outcomes in DS have not been elucidated. Methods A total of 156 cycles from 78 cases were studied. Patients were grouped and analyzed according to their follicular phase ovarian stimulation (FPS) types. Female ages, ovarian stimulation protocols, number of oocytes retrieved, embryo quality were recorded. Comparisons of outcomes were conducted between different groups. Results Our study found that LPS obtained similar outcomes to follicular phase stimulation (FPS), and that the choice of FPS protocol affected the efficiency of LPS, the antagonist protocol and progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) protocol resulted in better embryo outcomes in LPS. In LPS of DS, sufficient stimulation duration was the guarantee of embryo quality (number of available embryos: β = 0.145, 95% CI [0.078–0.211], P = 0.000; number of high-quality embryos: β = 0.114, 95% CI [0.057–0.171], P = 0.000). Discussion This study provided ideas for the precise use of DS. We suggest to further expand the sample size of DS in the future, conduct prospective controlled studies, unify the sample size of each subgroup, include the ovarian reserve of patients in the grouping basis, and exclude the influence of male factors. We hope that this study will help further refinement of DS so as to maximize patient benefits from it. Conclusion When the DS strategy is considered in the follicular phase, the antagonist protocol and PPOS protocol are more recommended for better embryo outcomes in LPS. During LPS, adequate ovarian stimulation duration is the most important guarantee for LPS efficiency.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic represents a global health crisis. The Shanghai municipal government in China implemented strict and comprehensive pandemic control strategies in the first half of 2022 to eliminate a wave of COVID-19 infection. The pandemic and the resulting government responses have led to abrupt changes to families’ daily lives, including the mental health of children and adolescents. ObjectiveThe aim of this paper is to examine the impact of COVID-19 exposure and the stringent lockdown measures on the daily life and mental health of children and adolescents and to provide suggestions on maintaining their mental health when similar public health emergencies occur in the future. MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, an anonymous survey was distributed online in May 1-15, 2022, in Shanghai. Individuals were eligible to participate if they were currently the caregiver of a child or adolescent (aged 4-17 years). Outcomes were psychosocial functioning of children and adolescents, as reported by parents, using the Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17. COVID-19 exposure and life changes were also reported. Multivariate logistic regression was used to analyze risk factors for poor psychosocial functioning. ResultsIn total, 2493 valid questionnaires were analyzed. The rate of positive scores on the global Pediatric Symptom Checklist-17 scale was 16.5% (n=411). Internalizing, attention, and externalizing problem subscale positivity rates were 17.3% (n=431), 10.9% (n=272), and 8.9% (n=221), respectively. Caregivers reported that 64.2% (n=1601) and 20.7% (n=516) of the children’s interactions with friends or peers and parents deteriorated, respectively. Compared with male caregivers, female caregivers were less likely to report psychosocial problems in children and adolescents (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.68; 95% CI 0.53-0.88). Older children and those with lower COVID-19 Exposure and Family Impact Scales scores were less likely to have psychological problems (aOR 1.15; 95% CI 1.10-1.21). Compared with children with screen times 3 hours had higher odds of psychological distress (aOR 2.09; 95% CI 1.47-1.97). Children who spent 1-2 hours exercising and had better interactions with friends or peers and parents showed a trend toward lower odds of psychological problems. Children and adolescents with worse sleep compared with preclosure were more likely to have psychological problems. ConclusionsThe prevalence of psychosocial problems among children and adolescents is relatively high. Abstract Background The de Winter ECG pattern was described by upsloping ST‐segment depression in leads V1‐V6, tall and symmetrical T waves in precordial leads. The ECG pattern is regarded to be associated with occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. Methods One patient with de Winter ECG pattern was included. The 12‐lead ECG of patients with chest pain showed upsloping ST‐segment depression up to 3 mm at the J point in leads V2‐V6; tall symmetrical T waves in leads V2‐V4; 1mm J point elevation in lead aVR; ST‐segment depression 1mm in I, aVL leads and inverted T waves in the inferior leads. The ECG was showed the de Winter pattern. Results The ECG was showed the de Winter pattern. CAG was performed, which showed the normal left main; 60%‐80% LAD stenosis; 50%‐60% ostial right coronary artery(RCA) stenosis; and 90% stenosis of the vessel at middle segment. Both proximal and middle RCA vascular lesions were dilated and successfully inserted with drug‐eluting stents, respectively. Conclusion Our case the ECG was showed horizontal ST depression with tall T waves in leads V2‐V4 (maximal ST depression in lead V4) while only ST depression in leads V5‐V6, which may result from multivessel disease.

Background: The lymph nodes between the sternocleidomastoid and sternohyoid muscle (LNSS) are not explicitly mentioned in the 2015 American Thyroid Association and 2008 American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) guidelines, but they are easily overlooked in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We prospectively evaluated the clinical significance of the LNSS in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients. Method: In five medical centers, two hundred and thirty-four PTC patients with lateral neck metastasis who underwent 264 neck dissection were enrolled in this study. In this study, we investigated the impact of aluminium ion (Al3+) incorporation on the microstructure and the phase transformation of the magnesium silicate hydrate system. The magnesium silicate hydrate system with aluminium was prepared by mixing magnesium oxide and silica fume with different aluminium ion contents (the Al/Si molar ratios of 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) at room temperature. The high degree of polymerization of the magnesium silicate hydrate phases resulted in the limited incorporation of aluminium in the structure of magnesium silicate hydrate. The silicon-oxygen tetrahedra sites of magnesium silicate hydrate layers, however, were unable to substitute for silicon sites through inverted silicon-oxygen linkages. The increase in aluminium ion content raised the degree of polymerization of the magnesium silicate hydrate phases from 0.84 to 0.92. A solid solution was formed from residual aluminum-amorphous phases such as hydroxyl-aluminum and magnesium silicate hydrate phases. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (F-SEM), and 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR data showed that the addition of Al3+ promotes the hydration process of MgO and has an obvious effect on the appearance of M-S-H gel. The gel with low aluminum content is fluffy, while the gel with high aluminum content has irregular flakes. The amount of Al3+ that enters the M-S-H gel increased with the increase of Al3+ content, but there was a threshold: the highest Al/Si molar ratio of M-S-H gel can be maintained at about 0.006.

Because of their trace existence, exquisite structure and unique role, highly toxic marine biotoxins have always led to the development of natural product identification, structure and function research, chemistry and biosynthesis, and there are still many deficiencies in the injury and protection of highly toxic organisms, toxin biosynthesis, rapid detection, poisoning and diagnosis and treatment. In this study, a mouse intestine organoid (MIO) model was constructed to explore the effects of the marine toxins okadaic acid (OA) and conotoxin (CgTx) on MIO. The results showed that the cell mortality caused by the two toxins at middle and high concentrations was significantly higher than the cell mortality of the control group, the ATPase activity in each group exposed to OA was significantly lower than the ATPase activity of the control group, all the CgTx groups were significantly higher than that of the control group, and the number of apoptotic cells was not significantly higher than the number of apoptotic cells of the control group. Through RNA-Seq differential genes, Gene Ontology (GO) and pathway analysis, and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) experimental results, it was demonstrated that OA reduced cell metabolism and energy production by affecting cell transcription in MIO. Ultimately, cell death resulted. In contrast, CgTx upregulated the intracellular hormone metabolism pathway by affecting the nuclear receptor pathway of MIO, which resulted in cell death and the generation of energy in large amounts.

Abstract Background As an alternative biomarker of intrahepatic covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) transcriptional activity, hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA may evolve during long-lasting virus-host interactions during chronic hepatitis B viral infection. The distribution pattern of serum HBV RNA levels in the natural course of chronic HBV infection remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of HBV RNA during the natural course of CHB and the role in distinguishing the natural history of HBV infection. Methods A total of 291 treatment-naïve chronic HBV carriers were enrolled. Based on the clinical, biochemical, serological, and histological data as well as HBV DNA levels, patients were classified into the following four categories: the immune-tolerant phase (IT,n = 35), HBeAg-positive immune-active phase (EPIA,n = 121), inactive chronic hepatitis B(ICH,n = 77) and HBeAg-negative immune reactive hepatitis (ENH,n = 58). The parameters and distribution patterns of serum HBV RNA were evaluated in relation to viral replication status, immune phase, disease category and Child-Pugh class. The relationships between serum HBV RNA and other serum hepatitis B viral markers were also analyzed. Results Serum HBV RNA levels were significantly lower in the HBeAg-negative patients compared to those in the HBeAg-positive patients, with the lowest levels seen in inactive carriers. In HBeAg-negative patients, serum HBV RNA levels increased if there is reactivation to active hepatitis and showed obvious superiority for the combination of serum HBV DNA (cutoff>3.39 Log copies/mL) and HBsAg (cutoff>2.74 Log IU/mL) in discriminating between ‘HBeAg-negative immune reactive’ phase and inactive chronic hepatitis B phases of HBeAg-negative chronic HBV infection. Serum HBV RNA levels were positively correlated with serum HBV DNA and HBsAg levels in all chronic HBV-infected patients. A stratified analysis revealed that a correlation between serum HBV RNA and HBV DNA or HBsAg was present in HBeAg-positive patients; however, in HBeAg-negative patients, serum HBV RNA was positively correlated with HBV DNA only. Conclusion During the natural course of chronic HBV infection, serum HBV RNA levels vary. Serum HBV RNA can act as a biomarker to predict the natural history of disease in chronic hepatitis B patients. In treatment-naïve HBeAg-negative chronic HBV-infected individuals, serum HBV RNA shows superiority in differentiating the ‘HBeAg-negative reactive’ phase.

The respiratory rate is one of the crucial indicators for monitoring human physiological health. The purpose of this paper was to introduce a head-mounted respiratory monitoring solution based on electrical impedance sensing. Firstly, we constructed a finite element model to analyze the feasibility of using head impedance for respiratory sensing based on the physiological changes in the pharynx. After that, we developed a circuit module that could be integrated into a head-mounted respiratory monitoring device using a bioelectrical impedance sensor. Furthermore, we combined adaptive filtering and respiratory tracking algorithms to develop an app for a mobile phone. Finally, we conducted controlled experiments to verify the effectiveness of this electrical impedance sensing system for extracting respiratory rate. We found that the respiration rates measured by the head-mounted electrical impedance respiratory monitoring system were not significantly different from those of commercial respiratory monitoring devices by a paired t-test (p > 0.05). The results showed that the respiratory rates of all subjects were within the 95% confidence interval. Therefore, the head-mounted respiratory monitoring scheme proposed in this paper was able to accurately measure respiratory rate, indicating the feasibility of this solution. In addition, this respiratory monitoring scheme helps to achieve real-time continuous respiratory monitoring, which can provide new insights for personalized health monitoring.

Since the emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in December 2019, it has rapidly spread across many countries and it has become a crucial global health concern. Furthermore, SARS-CoV-2 infection not only effect on respiratory system, but on reproductive system of human. However, there has been not any review described the transmission paths and effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on human reproductive system, systematically. In order to describe the transmission paths of SARS-CoV-2, effect on the male/female reproductive system of SARS-CoV-2 and some successful prevention measures. We would like to review effect of SARS-CoV-2 on reproductive system. To conclude, SARS-CoV-2 infection might damage to male reproductive system via ACE2 receptor mediating and male patients were reportedly slightly more affected than women by SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Abstract Cisplatin (ddp), which is commonly employed in the treatment of many advanced cancers, often results in initial therapeutic success; however, rapid progression of ddp-resistant cells remains the main reason for treatment failure. Facd with such a problem, we investigated the fitness differences between ddp-sensitive and ddp-resistant cell lines. We found that the growth of ddp-resistant cells was significantly slower than that of sensitive cells due to elevated ROS levels, which suggested that the ddp resistance mechanisms may have negative impacts on the growth of resistant cells. Furthermore, we observed that, when mixed with ddp-sensitive cells, ddp-resistant cells failed to compete, and the growth of ddp-resistant cells could therefore be suppressed by treatment in vivo. We propose a mathematical model parameterized based on in vivo experiments to describe the allometric growth of tumors consisting of two competing subclones. According to our model, a quantitative strategy with a variant drug-dosing interval is proposed to control tumor growth. Taking advantage of intratumoral competition, our strategy with appropriate dosing intervals could remarkably delay the development of ddp resistance and prolong overall survival. Maintaining a certain number of ddp-sensitive cells rather than eradicating the tumor with continuous treatment is feasible for future tumor treatment.

Background/Aims: Cryptococcus neoformans infections are becoming increasingly prevalent and remain a life-threatening clinical issue in immune-compromised hosts. The microorganism evades a variety of endogenous anti-fungal mechanims of host immune cells. The signaling pathways in human immune cells that become activated in response to Cryptococcus neoformans infection have yet to be fully characterized. Methods: Human monocytes were incubated with Cryptococcus neoformans, and the whole transcriptome of monocytes was sequenced before and after exposure to Cryptococcus neoformans using mass parallel sequencing techniques. Based on the genes that demonstrated altered expression patterns, we performed GO and KEGG enrichment analysis to further characterize the pathways involved in monocyte activation by Cryptococcus neoformans. Results: We found that immune and inflammatory responses, as well as chemotaxis, were the most heavily activated cellular events. Specifically, the toll-like receptor, tumor necrosis factor, NF-kB and Jak-STAT pathways were the most active pathways in response to Cryptococcus neoformans infection. The sequencing data of selected genes from the transcriptome analysis were further validated by real-time polymerase chain reactions. Conclusion: Taken together, our study is the first characterization of the transcriptome alterations in human immune cells upon C. neoformans infection, providing additional information that may be helpful in discovering novel anti-fungal targets.

Certain viruses use microRNAs to regulate the expression of their own genes, host genes, or both. A number of microRNAs expressed by herpes simplex virus type 2 have been confirmed by previous studies. However, whether these microRNAs play a role in the metastasis of lung cancers and how these viral microRNAs precisely regulated the tumor biological process in lung cancer bone metastasis remain obscure. We recently identified the high expression of an acutely and latently expressed viral microRNA, Hsv2-miR-H9-5p, encoded by herpes simplex virus type 2 latency-associated transcript through microarray and quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses which compared the expression of microRNAs in bone metastasis from lung cancer with primary lung cancers. We now reported that Hsv2-miR-H9-5p was highly expressed in bone metastasis and closely associated with pathological and metastatic processes of lung cancers. The functions of Hsv2-miR-H9-5p were determined by overexpression which results in an increase in survival, migration, and invasion of lung cancer cells in vitro. We determined that Hsv2-miR-H9-5p directly targeted SOCS2 mechanistically by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Then, we investigated the functions of SOCS2 in the progress of lung cancers. Reduction of SOCS2 dosage by hsv2-miR-H9-5p induced increased migration and invasion of lung cancer cells. Overexpression of SOCS2 inverted these phenotypes generated by hsv2-miR-H9-5p, indicating the potential roles of SOCS2 in Hsv2-miR-H9-5p-driven metastasis in lung cancers. The results highlighted that Hsv2-miR-H9-5p regulated and contributed to bone metastasis of lung cancers. We proposed that Hsv2-miR-H9-5p could be used as a potential target in lung cancer therapy.

Grainyhead-like 2 is a human homolog of Drosophila grainyhead. It inhibits epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition that is necessary for cell migration, and it is involved in neural tube closure, epithelial morphogenesis, and barrier formation during embryogenesis by regulation of the expression of cell junction proteins such as E-cadherin and vimentin. Cancer shares many common characters with development such as epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. In addition to its important role in development, grainyhead-like 2 is implicated in carcinogenesis as well. However, the reports on grainyhead-like 2 in various cancers are controversial. Grainyhead-like 2 can act as either a tumor suppressor or an oncogene with the mechanisms not well elucidated. In this review, we summarized recent progress on grainyhead-like 2 in development and cancer in order to get an insight into the regulation network of grainyhead-like 2 and understand the roles of grainyhead-like 2 in various cancers.

Massive sensing data are generated continuously in the Internet of Things. How to organize and how to query the big sensing data are big challenges for intelligent applications. This paper studies the organization of big sensing data with event-linked network ( ELN ) model, where events are regarded as primary units for organizing data and links are used to represent the semantic associations among events. Several different types of queries on the event-linked network are also explored, which are different from queries on traditional relational database. We use an instance of smart home to show the effectiveness and efficiency of organization and query approaches based on the event-linked network.

Abnormal microRNA (miRNA) expression has been linked to the development and progression of several human cancers, and such dysregulation can result from aberrant DNA methylation. While a small number of miRNAs is known to be regulated by DNA methylation, we postulated that such epigenetic regulation is more prevalent. By combining MBD-isolated Genome Sequencing (MiGS) to evaluate genome-wide DNA methylation patterns and microarray analysis to determine miRNA expression levels, we systematically searched for candidate miRNAs regulated by DNA methylation in colorectal cancer cell lines. We found 64 miRNAs to be robustly methylated in HCT116 cells; eighteen of them were located in imprinting regions or already reported to be regulated by DNA methylation. For the remaining 46 miRNAs, expression levels of 18 were consistent with their DNA methylation status. Finally, 8 miRNAs were up-regulated by 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine treatment and identified to be novel miRNAs regulated by DNA methylation. Moreover, we demonstrated the functional relevance of these epigenetically silenced miRNAs by ectopically expressing select candidates, which resulted in inhibition of growth and migration of cancer cells. In addition to reporting these findings, our study also provides a reliable, systematic strategy to identify DNA methylation-regulated miRNAs by combining DNA methylation profiles and expression data.

Abstract Objective To compare the clinical outcomes of control of drainage volume through either elevating the drainage height or tilting the head down in a supine position for the management of cerebrospinal fluid leakage (CSFL) following posterior lumbar surgery. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted to review the data of patients who underwent lumbar spine surgery at a single hospital over a 4-year period from January 2020 to December 2023. Postoperative CSFL and complications were recorded. All patients with CSFL were managed with bed rest, a 20–30° head-down tilt position, or a drainage system elevated by 10 cm, along with subfascial drains, for a duration of 3 days. The clinical outcomes of drainage volume control were compared between the elevation of the drainage system and the head-down tilt position in the supine posture. Results The incidence of CSFL after lumbar surgeries was 1.2% (84 out of 7,284 cases). None of the CSFL patients experienced significant complications or required reoperation. When compared to the traditional Trendelenburg position, elevating the drainage height reduced the incidence of headache and dizziness, as well as shortened the time to ambulation, postoperative defecation time, and postoperative hospital stay, with statistically significant differences (p

Three samples of 5#, 9# and Mugua coal from Coal Preparation Plant of Lyulin Energy & Chemical Co., Ltd. were collected as the research objects. Screening, proximate analysis and ultimate analysis of the three coal samples were carried out. The mineral composition and surface functional groups of the three coal samples were analyzed by XRD, FT-IR and XPS. Kerosene, on-site reagent and TY6 developed in the laboratory were used for flotation tests. The collecting effect of the three reagents on different types of coal samples was compared. The results showed that 5# coal sample was easy to float, 9# coal sample showed less floatability than 5# coal, while Mugua coal showed the poorest floatability owing to high oxidation and strong hydrophilicity. For the three coal samples, TY6 and the on-site reagents both showed much better collective ability than kerosene and consume less as well. For easy-to-float coal, TY6 showed better selectivity, while for difficult-to-float coal, TY6 showed better collectivity. Smaller particle size dispersed in water, higher viscosity, and containing oxygen-bearing organic substances were the main characteristics of TY6 and the on-site reagents that made them stand out as compared with kerosene, which resulted in better reaction with coal surface, bigger contact angle and better hydrophobicity. In this point of view, TY6 behaved even a little better than the on-site reagents.

Abstract Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) begins with premature activation of enzymes, promoted by the immune system, triggering a potential systemic inflammatory response that leads to organ failure with increased mortality and a bleak prognosis. Interleukin-22 (IL-22) is a cytokine that may have a significant role in SAP. IL-22, a member of the IL-10 cytokine family, has garnered growing interest owing to its potential tissue-protective properties. Recently, emerging research has revealed its specific effects on pancreatic diseases, particularly SAP. This paper provides a review of the latest knowledge on the role of IL-22 and its viability as a therapeutic target in SAP.

Abstract Asian soybean rust (ASR), caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is a devastating disease that is present in all major soybean-producing regions. The limited availability of resistant germplasm has resulted in a scarcity of commercial soybean cultivars that are resistant to the disease. To date, only the Chinese soybean landrace SX6907 has demonstrated an immune response to ASR. In this study, we present the isolation and characterization of Rpp6907-7 and Rpp6907-4, a gene pair that confer broad-spectrum resistance to ASR. Rpp6907-7 and Rpp6907-4 encode atypic nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins that are found to be required for NLR-mediated immunity. Genetic analysis shows that only Rpp6907-7 confers resistance, while Rpp6907-4 regulates Rpp6907-7 signaling activity by acting as a repressor in the absence of recognized effectors. Our work highlights the potential value of using Rpp6907 in developing resistant soybean cultivars.

Abstract Reversible protein phosphorylation, regulated by protein phosphatases, fine-tunes target protein function and plays a vital role in biological processes. Dysregulation of this process leads to aberrant post-translational modifications (PTMs) and contributes to disease development. Despite the widespread use of artificial catalysts as enzyme mimetics, their direct modulation of proteins remains largely unexplored. To address this gap and enable the reversal of aberrant PTMs for disease therapy, we present the development of artificial protein modulators (APROMs). Through atomic-level engineering of heterogeneous catalysts with asymmetric catalytic centers, these modulators bear structural similarities to protein phosphatases and exhibit remarkable ability to destabilize the bridging μ3-hydroxide. This activation of catalytic centers enables spontaneous hydrolysis of phospho-substrates, providing precise control over PTMs. Notably, APROMs, with protein phosphatase-like characteristics, catalytically reprogram the biological function of α-synuclein by directly hydrolyzing hyperphosphorylated α-synuclein. Consequently, synaptic function is reinforced in Parkinson’s disease. Our findings offer a promising avenue for reprogramming protein function through de novo PTMs strategy.

Abstract Ischaemic bowel disease (ICBD) is a group of intestinal ischaemia syndromes caused by various aetiologies of reduced intestinal blood flow or vascular occlusion. ICBD can present as abdominal pain, bloody stool, and diarrhoea. This disease often occurs in middle-aged and elderly individuals with cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The incidence of ischaemic bowel disease has been increasing for decades, and it is difficult to diagnose, resulting in rapid disease progression and a high mortality rate. Therefore, fully understanding this disease, improving the diagnosis rate of this disease, and finding appropriate treatment methods are urgently needed to improve the condition and prognosis of patients. Umbilical cord blood stem cells are accessible, have weak immunogenicity, and have various biological functions, such as angiogenesis, inflammation and immune regulation. Many studies have confirmed that cord blood stem cells can relieve ischaemia, and these cells have attracted tremendous amounts of attention in regenerative medicine in recent years. In this paper, we discuss the clinical characteristics of ICBD, analyse the characteristics of human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (HUCB-MNCs), and use its to treat ischaemic bowel disease. Additionally, we compare the clinical manifestations and related indicators before and after treatment to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these methods.

The working principle of the motor can cause unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) between stator and rotor unavoidably. Previous research about nonlinear vibration excited by UMP was focused on the rotor supported by traditional mechanical bearings or gas bearings. However, the magnetic levitation rotor is particular due to the low rigidity provided by the active magnetic bearing (AMB). UMP amplifies rotor vibration in the resonant zone and further excites the nonlinear electromagnetic force, thus producing different vibration phenomena. The paper calculates rotor orbit, spectra analysis, and time-history plot with numerical methods and studies the influence of the rotation speed, eccentricity, key control parameters, and UMP on rotor dynamics in detail. Results illustrate displacement response spectra of the magnetic levitation rotor are quite different from previous research results. The appearing frequency components are inducted by universal formulas in this paper. Furthermore, research shows a slight adjustment of the control parameters affect significantly harmonic components and vibration characteristics. The research results have practical reference significance for fault diagnosis, feature recognition, and controller optimization of the AMB-rotor system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic and incurable skin inflammation driven by an abnormal immune response. Our study aims to investigate the potential of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) primed mesenchymal stem cells (IMSCs) in targeting T cells to attenuate psoriasis-like inflammation, and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanism involved. Methods: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) were isolated from the umbilical cord and identified based on their surface markers. Psoriasis models were established and then treated with IMSCs. Flow cytometry analysis was used to examine cell surface markers and T cell percentages. Indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) was knocked down by small interfering RNA (siRNA) and examined with western blot assay. The proliferative capacity of T cells was assessed using water-soluble tetrazolium salt-1(WST-1). Additionally, an immunohistochemical assay was used to determine epidermal thickness. The psoriasis area and severity index (PASI) scores were also assessed. Results: We observed significant therapeutic efficacy of IMSCs against psoriasis-like inflammation in mice. Treatment with IMSCs resulted in a notable reduction in T cell infiltration within psoriatic lesions. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the therapeutic efficacy was mediated by the upregulation of IDO through IFN-γ stimulation. In vitro, IDO inhibited T cell proliferation, and in vivo, the therapeutic efficacy was eliminated when MSCs were transfected with IDO siRNA. Conclusion: IMSCs can treat psoriasis by suppressing T cell infiltration and the suppression is mediated by IDO.

This paper studies the estimation of reachable sets for discrete-time singular systems with time-varying delays and bounded peak inputs. A novel linear matrix inequality condition for the reachable set estimation of the time-varying time-delay discrete singular system is derived using an inverse convex combination and the discrete form of the Wirtinger inequality. Furthermore, the symmetric matrix involved in the obtained results does not need to be positively definite. Compared to decomposing the time-delay discrete singular system under consideration into fast and slow subsystems, the method presented in this paper is simpler and involves fewer variables. Two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the proposed method.

In this paper, we investigate a Lyapunov trajectory tracking design method that incorporates a Schrödinger equation with a dipole subterm and polarizability. Our findings suggest that the proposed control law can overcome the limitations of certain existing control laws that do not converge. By integrating a quadratic performance index, we introduce an optimal control law, which we subsequently analyze for stability and optimality. We also simulate the spin-1/2 particle system to illustrate our results. These findings are further validated through numerical illustrations involving a 3D, 5D system, and a spin-1/2 particle system.

Summary: Host specificity plays important roles in expanding the host range of rhizobia, while the genetic information responsible for host specificity remains largely unexplored. In this report, the roots of four symbiotic systems with notable different symbiotic phenotypes and the control were studied at four different post-inoculation time points by RNA sequencning (RNA-seq). The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were divided into “found only in soybean or Lotus,” “only expressed in soybean or Lotus,” and “expressed in both hosts” according to the comparative genomic analysis. The distributions of enriched function ontology (GO) terms and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways vary significantly in different symbiotic systems. Host specific genes account for the majority of the DEGs involved in response to stimulus, associated with plant-pathogen interaction pathways, and encoding resistance (R) proteins, the symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) proteins and the target proteins in the SNF-related modules. Our findings provided molecular candidates for better understanding the mechanisms of symbiotic host-specificity.

In this article, a mathematical model was developed to describe disease control by media factors. The Lambert W function was used to convert the system definition by implicit functions into explicit functions. We analyzed the dynamics of the defined piecewise smooth system and verified the correctness of the theoretical analysis through numerical simulation. Research revealed that media factors can delay the peak of an epidemic and reduce the scale of the epidemic. It is worth noting that adopting different control measures has a certain impact on the scale of the epidemic; the analysis results indicate that implementing dual-control is the most effective way to limit the spread of diseases and this strategy may provide clues for disease control.

This paper investigates a quantum system described by the Schrödinger equation, utilizing the concept of the quantum Lyapunov function. The Lyapunov function is chosen based on the mean value of a virtual mechanical quantity, where different values of P, the mean value of the virtual mechanical quantity in the Lyapunov function, have an impact on the attractive domain of the quantum system. The selected primary optimization algorithms approximating matrix P are the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and the simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. This study examines the characteristics of the system’s attraction domain under these two distinct algorithms and establishes stability conditions for the nonlinear quantum system. We introduce a method to estimate the size of the attractive domain using the Lyapunov function approach, converting the attractive domain issue into an optimization challenge. Numerical simulations are conducted in various two-dimensional test systems and spin 1/2 particle systems.

Low molecular weight chitosan selenium nanoparticles (LCS-SeNPs), a biologically active compound derived from selenium polysaccharides, have demonstrated potential in addressing obesity. However, the mechanism through which LCS-SeNPs alleviate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) remains unclear. Our results elucidated that LCS-SeNPs significantly inhibited fat accumulation and markedly improved the intestinal barrier by increasing mucus secretion from goblet cells. Moreover, LCS-SeNPs reshaped intestinal flora composition by increasing the abundance of mucus-associated microbiota (Bifidobacterium, Akkermansia, and Muribaculaceae_unclassified) and decreasing the abundance of obesity-contributed bacterium (Anaerotruncus, Lachnoclostridium, and Proteus). The modulation of intestinal microbiota by LCS-SeNPs influenced several metabolic pathways, including bile acid secretion, purine metabolites, and tryptophan derivation. Meanwhile, glycocholic acid and tauro-beta-muricholic acid were significantly reduced in the LCS-SeNP group. Our study suggests the crucial role of intestinal microbiota composition and metabolism, providing a new theoretical foundation for utilizing selenium polysaccharides in the intervention of HFD-induced NAFLD.

This article proposes a novel robust invariance condition for uncertain linear discrete-time systems with state and control constraints, utilizing a method of semidefinite programming duality. The approach involves approximating the robust invariant set for these systems by tackling the dual problem associated with semidefinite programming. Central to this method is the formulation of a dual programming through the application of adjoint mapping. From the standpoint of semidefinite programming dual optimization, the paper presents a novel linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions pertinent to robust positive invariance. Illustrative examples are incorporated to elucidate the findings.

Soybean (Glycine max), the primary source of high-quality plant protein, plays a crucial role as a grain and oil crop in China. Harnessing the full potential of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in soybean production holds immense significance for agriculture and ecology alike. Zhongdou 63, a newly developed early-maturing summer soybean cultivar in 2021, exhibits remarkable traits such as high yield, superior quality, multi-resistance, and wide adaptability. In this study, eight distinct rhizobia strains from diverse regions were meticulously screened to identify highly effective strains specifically suited for Zhongdou 63. The aboveground biomass, plant height, chlorophyll content, root length, nodule number, and nodule dry weight of Zhongdou 63 were measured and the data were subjected to statistical analysis. The results demonstrated that Y63-1 is a predominant strain of Zhongdou 63. Subsequently, we conducted further investigations on the broad-spectrum nodulation characteristics of Y63-1. Ten representative soybean cultivars were individually inoculated with Y63-1 and subsequently analyzed for nodule numbers and nodule dry weight in their symbiotic systems with rhizobia. The findings revealed that Y63-1 effectively formed nodules with all ten soybean varieties tested. In summary, our current study identified highly efficient broad-spectrum Bradyrhizobium elkanii strain Y63-1 as the predominant strain in Zhongdou 63 and provided a theoretical foundation for enhancing yield potential not only in Zhongdou 63 but also in other varieties through inoculation with highly efficient rhizobia in production.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a degenerative disease, caused by genetic mutations that lead to a loss in photoreceptors. For research on RP, rd10 mice, which carry mutations in the phosphodiesterase (PDE) gene, exhibit degenerative patterns comparable to those of patients with RP, making them an ideal model for investigating potential treatments. Although numerous studies have reported the potential of biochemical drugs, gene correction, and stem cell transplantation in decelerating rd10 retinal degeneration, a comprehensive review of these studies has yet to be conducted. Therefore, here, a comparative analysis of rd10 mouse treatment research over the past decade was performed. Our findings suggest that biochemical drugs capable of inhibiting the inflammatory response may be promising therapeutics. Additionally, significant progress has been made in the field of gene therapy; nevertheless, challenges such as strict delivery requirements, bystander editing, and off-target effects still need to be resolved. Nevertheless, secretory function is the only unequivocal protective effect of stem cell transplantation. In summary, this review presents a comprehensive analysis and synthesis of the treatment approaches employing rd10 mice as experimental subjects, describing a clear pathway for future RP treatment research and identifies potential clinical interventions.

The recycling of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) generates nonmetallic fractions (NMFs); due to the complex components of NMFs and the limited nature of economic benefits of treating NMFs, treatment of NMFs is challenging. In this study, two types of NMFs—dry-NMFs (D-NMFs) and wet-NMFs (W-NMFs)—derived from the dry and wet separation processes of WPCBs, respectively, were investigated. These NMFs were used as fillers to reinforce the polyethylene (PE) matrix, and their effects on the composite properties were examined. Thermal property studies revealed that incorporating both types of NMFs improved the thermal stability of the prepared composite samples. When neat PE was filled with 15 wt% of D-NMFs and W-NMFs, the final decomposition temperature (Tf) increased from 475 to 482 and 487 °C, respectively. Mechanical property studies revealed that the addition of NMFs to the composite sample, particularly that of W-NMFs, enhanced the stiffness of the prepared samples, although at the expense of some reduction in their toughness values. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus values increased from 9.41, 121.80, 5.89, and 99.15 MPa for neat PE to 11.15, 521.82, 17.94, and 597.29 MPa, respectively, for composites containing 25 wt% of W-NMFs. Furthermore, the introduction of shellfish wastes in the NMF/PE blend, especially that of clam shell, further enhanced the overall properties of the composite. After adding 8 wt% of clam shell with 15 wt% W-NMFs, the Tf increased from 487 to 498 °C. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus values increased from 11.37, 355.13, 16.06, and 443.31 MPa for neat PE to 12.26, 466.73, 18.71, and 568.46 MPa, respectively, for the composite prepared with clam shell. Thus, this study contributes to the WPCB recycling literature and promotes circular economy development.

【Objective】According to the market's demand for taste-type and fresh-eatable cabbage, more varieties of cabbage with good characters and in line with market supply and demand were selected by using its own germplasm resources.【Method】Using 13 Ougra sterile heading cabbage materials selected by the team as female parents and 10 inbred lines heading cabbage materials (GL14000-14009) as male parents, 14 heading cabbage hybrid combinations were prepared through hybridization, the experiments were compared and screened from the aspects of plant width, outer leaf number, longitudinal diameter, transverse diameter, central column length, yield and disease resistance.【Result】After comparison, GL22-02, GL22-06, GL22-11 and GL22-13 were obtained, and their agrtural traits, quality and yield were better than those of the control Tejia No. 2. All the leaf bulbs were round, and the petiole-leaf ratio was 26.9%, 20.8%, 23.1% and 16.8%. It was better than that of control variety (31.3%). Leaf bulb compactness was 0.76, 0.73, 0.59 and 0.62 g/cm3, which was more than 0.16 g/cm3 higher than that of the control variety. The central column length was less than half of the leaf bulb height, 4.9, 4.3, 4.8 and 4.6 cm, respectively. The moisture contents were 93.22%, 94.17%, 93.75% and 93.61%, protein contents were 1.51%, 1.28%, 1.39% and 1.36%, respectively. The soluble sugar content were 5.61%, 5.69%, 5.56% and 5.84%, respectively, which were 0.14-0.37 percentage point higher than that of the control variety. The crude cellulose content were 0.61%, 0.71%, 0.69% and 0.67%, respectively, which were 0.08-0.18 percentage point lower than that of the control variety. The vitamin C contents were 682.3, 687.1, 699.1 and 682.3 mg/kg, respectively, which were 48.4-65.2 mg/kg higher than the control variety. After edible quality identification, four hybrid materials of heading cabbage were selected, the leaf balls were raw (fresh) to eat, crisp texture, sweet taste. The black rot disease resistance of the composite materials was high (HR), the same as that of the control.The yield was 4.80%, 8.46%, 10.97% and 8.46% higher than that of control Tejia No. 2.【Conclusion】The four composite materials GL22-02, GL22-06, GL22-11 and GL22-13 were selected. They both had agronomic and economic characters, which can be used for production demonstration in large scale.

Human cells have a natural cancerous defense system, and p53 protein is at the core. It is well known that p53 relies on oscillatory dynamic behavior to perform tumor suppressor functions. However, the mechanism of its oscillation remains unclear. To reveal the effect of time lag on the onset of p53 oscillations, we analytically and numerically investigate a possible scenario in which p53 oscillations are driven by a time lag. The model has only three nodes, two negative loops, and one delay. We focus on two types of time delays: discrete and distributed, use Hopf bifurcation theory to derive conditions for the occurrence of limit cycle oscillations, and confirm the properties of Hopf bifurcations by normal form and central manifold approaches. The analytical results are supported by numerical results. We suggest that discrete time lag promote p53 oscillations, while distributed time lag have a dual effect on p53 oscillations. These results imply that controlling the time lag in an appropriate range favors the inhibition of p53 on cancer cells.

This paper deals with the constrained state regulation problem (CSRP) of descriptor fractional-order linear continuous-time systems (DFOLCS) with order 0<α<1. The objective is to establish the existence of conditions for a linear feedback control law within state constraints and to propose a method for solving the CSRP of DFOLCS. First, based on the decomposition and separation method and coordinate transformation, the DFOLCS can be transformed into an equivalent fractional-order reduced system; hence, the CSRP of the DFOLCS is equivalent to the CSRP of the reduced system. By means of positive invariant sets theory, Lyapunov stability theory, and some mathematical techniques, necessary and sufficient conditions for the polyhedral positive invariant set of the equivalent reduced system are presented. Models and corresponding algorithms for solving the CSRP of a linear feedback controller are also presented by the obtained conditions. Under the condition that the resulting closed system is positive, the given model of the CSRP in this paper for the DFOLCS is formulated as nonlinear programming with a linear objective function and quadratic mixed constraints. Two numerical examples illustrate the proposed method.

This study assessed the physicochemical properties of air-fried hairtail fillets (190 °C, 24 min) under different storage temperatures (4, 25, and 35 °C). The findings revealed a gradual decline in sensory scores across all samples during storage, accompanied by a corresponding decrease in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total viable count over time. Lower storage temperatures exhibited an effective capacity to delay lipid oxidation and microbiological growth in air-fried hairtail fillets. Subsequently, alterations in the microbiota composition of air-fried hairtail fillets during cold storage were examined. Throughout the storage duration, Achromobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, and Pseudomonas emerged as the three dominant genera in the air-fried hairtail samples. Additionally, Pearson correlation analysis demonstrated that among the most prevalent microbial genera in air-fried hairtail samples, Achromobacter and Psychrobacter exhibited positive correlations with the L* value, a* value, and sensory scores. Conversely, they displayed negative correlations with pH, b* value, and TBARS. Notably, air-fried samples stored at 4 °C exhibited prolonged freshness compared with those stored at 25 °C and 35 °C, suggesting that 4 °C is an optimal storage temperature. This study offers valuable insights into alterations in the physicochemical properties and microbial distribution in air-fried hairtail fillets during storage, facilitating the improvement of meat quality by adjusting microbial communities in air-fried hairtail fillets.

Abstract We report the scalable fabrication of CdS/ZnS 1D/2D heterojunctions under ambient air conditions (i.e., room temperature and atmospheric pressure) in which ZnS nanoparticles are anchored on the surface of CdS nanosheets. The as‐formed heterojunctions exhibit a significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 14.02 mmol h−1 g−1 when irradiated with visible light, which is ~10 and 85 times higher than those of pristine CdS nanosheets and CdS nanoparticles, respectively, and superior to most of the CdS‐based photocatalysts reported to date. Furthermore, they provide robust photocatalytic performance with demonstratable stability over 58 h, indicating their potential for practical applications. The formation of 1D/2D heterojunctions not only provides improved exposed active sites that respond to illumination but also provides a rapid pathway to generate photogenerated carriers for efficient separation and transfer through the matrix of single‐crystalline CdS nanosheets. In addition, first‐principles simulations demonstrate that the existence of rich Zn vacancies increases the energy level of the ZnS valence band maximum to construct type‐II and Z‐scheme mixed heterojunctions, which plays a critical role in suppressing the recombination of carriers with limited photocorrosion of CdS to enhance photocatalytic behavior.

Background: Overexpression of the NAD(P)H: Quinone Oxidoreductase 1 (NQOI) gene has been linked with tumor progression, aggressiveness, drug resistance, and poor patient prognosis. Most research has described the biological function of the NQO1 in certain types and limited samples, but a comprehensive understanding of the NQO1’s function and clinical importance at the pan-cancer level is scarce. More research is needed to understand the role of NQO1 in tumor infiltration, and immune checkpoint inhibitors in various cancers are needed.Methods: The NQO1 expression data for 33 types of pan-cancer and their association with the prognosis, pathologic stage, gender, immune cell infiltration, the tumor mutation burden, microsatellite instability, immune checkpoints, enrichment pathways, and the half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) were downloaded from public databases.Results: Our findings indicate that the NQO1 gene was significantly upregulated in most cancer types. The Cox regression analysis showed that overexpression of the NQO1 gene was related to poor OS in Glioma, uveal melanoma, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma, and adrenocortical carcinoma. NQO1 mRNA expression positively correlated with infiltrating immune cells and checkpoint molecule levels. The single-cell analysis revealed a potential relationship between the NQO1 mRNA expression levels and the infiltration of immune cells and stromal cells in bladder urothelial carcinoma, invasive breast carcinoma, and colorectal cancer. Conversely, a negative association was noted between various drugs (17-AAG, Lapatinib, Trametinib, PD-0325901) and the NQO1 mRNA expression levels.Conclusion: NQO1 expression was significantly associated with prognosis, immune infiltrates, and drug resistance in multiple cancer types. The inhibition of the NQO1-dependent signaling pathways may provide a promising strategy for developing new cancer-targeted therapies.

Abstract Background The prevalence of comorbid depressive and anxiety disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH) is high. However, it is unclear which symptom is the bridge symptom between depression and anxiety in PLWH. This study aimed to develop symptom networks for depression and anxiety and explore the bridge symptoms and interconnectedness between these disorders in PLWH with comorbid depressive and anxiety disorders. Methods A multisite, hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2020 to November 2021. Depression and anxiety were measured with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. We visualized the symptom network using the qgraph package and computed the bridge expected influence of each node. The GLASSO layout was used to generate undirected association networks. Results A total of 2016 individuals were included in the analysis. In the anxiety cluster, “not feeling relaxed” had the highest bridge expected influence and strength (r bridge expected influence = 0.628, r strength = 0.903). In the depression cluster, “not feeling cheerful” was identified as having a high bridge expected influence (r bridge expected influence = 0.385). “Not feeling cheerful” and “not feeling relaxed” were the strongest edges across the depression and anxiety clusters (r = 0.30 ± 0.02). Conclusions Healthcare professionals should take note when PLWH report severe bridge symptoms. To enhance the levels of perceived cheerfulness and relaxation, positive psychology interventions could be implemented.

Abstract. In recent years, with the increasing incidence of obesity and other metabolic diseases, the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has increased and it has become a major health problem affecting more than one quarter of the world's population. Recently, experts reached a consensus that NAFLD does not reflect the current knowledge, and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was suggested as a more appropriate term. MAFLD is not just a simple renaming of NAFLD. The definition of MAFLD allows a patient to have dual (or more) etiologies for their liver disease, which will help to exclude more heterogeneous patients. In this review, we introduce the significant differences between the definitions of NAFLD and MAFLD. In addition, we also describe the advantages of the term MAFLD in the pathophysiology, therapy, and patient management.
