Objective: To evaluate the effect of cabergoline on maternal blood pressure and pulse immediately postpartum. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 224 post‐partum women who delivered at the University of Washington and did not breastfeed. Women who received 1 mg cabergoline within 48 h post‐partum were compared to unexposed non‐breastfeeding women. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse were assessed at 4‐h intervals up to 24 h after cabergoline administration, and compared to unexposed women using delivery as the reference time point. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse were compared using linear regression and 95% confidence intervals, adjusting for age, indication for lactation suppression and weeks' gestation at delivery. Results: Cabergoline‐exposed women had lower mean systolic blood pressure at all time intervals. The maximum systolic blood pressure decrease with cabergoline was −10.88 mmHg (95% confidence interval −18.15 to −3.61) at >20–24 h. Mean diastolic blood pressure among cabergoline‐exposed women decreased by −8.15 mmHg (95% confidence interval −13.94 to −2.36) at >20–24 h only. We found no significant difference in maternal pulse. Cabergoline was well tolerated with no adverse effects observed. Conclusion: Cabergoline has minimal clinically‐relevant hemodynamic effects and was well tolerated among normotensive postpartum women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advection of teleost early life stages from nursery habitats can greatly impact year-class strength. Few studies test the effects of current on retention in freshwater fish eggs and larvae, so we used walleye (Sander vitreus) to assess current effects throughout egg and larval development and the role of substrate on egg retention. Eggs were removed from sand substrates at currents of 12 cm x [s.sup.-1], but much higher speeds were required for removal from tile or stones. Larvae exhibited biphasic swimming ability, with slow swimming below 21 mm total length and rapidly increasing ability above 21 mm. These data necessitate adjusting models currently used to link water current and nursery advection in this and similar species, as the current effects were clearly substrate- and size-dependent. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) can be a powerful tool to survey populations of soniferous species in natural settings. Using PAM allows monitoring of behaviour and activity unobtrusively to get a more accurate assessment of behavioural responses than traditional techniques. The use of PAM can also be beneficial for behaviourally cryptic species or other taxa that might be missed by more traditional sampling methods.To quantify seasonality of reproduction in an aquatic invasive species and to assess possible interactions between both abiotic and biotic noise and acoustic ecology, we deployed multiple hydrophones to fully characterise the acoustic behaviour of round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), a highly invasive species. We also aimed to quantify levels of anthropogenic noise around the goby communities. We tested correlations of round goby calling rates with overall noise levels and the presence of boat traffic as direct tests of the hypothesised role of noise on natural acoustic behaviour of fish.Round goby showed a clear diel patterning of calling behaviour, with the highest activity during the night and ceasing at midday; supporting the importance of acoustic—as opposed to visual—signalling for mate attraction. Calls also allowed us to pinpoint spawning areas for possible remediation. We saw no correlation between measures of background noise and calling behaviour or presence of boats and calling, suggesting that increased levels of noise have no effect on the natural calling behaviour of this species.Passive acoustic monitoring of round goby calling behaviour is a promising technique for those interested in remediation of this highly invasive species, as it can be difficult to quantify population levels by more conventional means. The lack of noise effects we see suggests that noise from recreational boats does not disrupt signalling in this species with limited hearing range, although more investigation is needed to ascertain whether noise could be a stressor in other contexts. The search for integration among economic sectors and territorial administrations has become one of the defining features of coastal management initiatives in recent years. A wide range of ideal dimensions to integration has been described in the literature, with two common elements being horizontal and vertical integration involving, among others, the wide range of administrative actors in the coastal zone. Examination of the European demonstration projects in ICZM suggests that integration efforts on the ground start more modestly, with efforts to engage a range of different formal and informal stakeholders in a cooperative process aimed toward development of a set of common goals and a strategy for the coast. While institutional contexts vary greatly between different countries within Europe, in most countries integration between sectoral and territorial planning is not possible within a single administrative level. However, the direct involvement in local ICZM initiatives of key actors from central administrations is often impracticable. This article suggests actions could be taken at more central levels of government in order to simplify the institutional context in which local ICZM is developed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coastal lands and waters of Europe have been used by man for millennia. Over the last 10 years there has been growing recognition of the damage that numerous forms of human activity have imposed on coastal systems and natural resources. There has been a corresponding growth in awareness of the need for a more integrated approach to coastal management in Europe. Such approaches have been promoted through political decisions, policy development, and, to a limited extent, through legislation at European and national levels. The European Demonstration Programme on Integrated Coastal Zone Management has accelerated this process by stimulating a broad debate on coastal management practice within Europe, which led to a proposal by the European Commission for nonbinding European legislation in the form of a recommendation that encourages member states to implement integrated coastal zone management (ICZM). Though nonbinding, the recently adopted recommendation is likely to further stimulate the development of ICZM in Europe with a shift from the current project-by-project approach to a more strategic approach. The US Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 established a collaborative and voluntary Federal-State Coastal Zone Management Program (CZMP)which now covers over 99 per cent of the nation's coastline. By comparison, in Europe coastal management initiatives are a relatively recent phenomenon. While the need for integrated coastal zone managementis widely recognized, the responses on a European scale are largely fragmented. This paper examines key features of the US CZMP and raises the question, would such an approach be appropriate and feasible inEurope?
