Abstract

This study has successfully demonstrated the formation of pure and impure bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) photocatalyst produced using alginic acid as a biotemplate. Structural and phase purity of the nanocatalysts were tested, and efficiencies of both pure and impure BiFeO3 nanocatalysts in 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) degradation were conducted via solar-Fenton reaction. Catalytic activities were investigated with respect to the initial concentrations of 4-CP and oxidant, H2O2, nanocatalyst loading and reaction time. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model is best suited to the degradation activity. High purity BiFeO3 nanocatalyst exhibited high photodegradation activity with low dosage as well as high stability, surface area and ability to regenerate compared to impurity Bi2Fe4O9. Results showed ~98% degradation of 200 mg L-1 of 4-CP at pH 2.5 with 0.1 mol L-1 of H2O2 and 2.55 mmol L-1 of nanocatalyst within 180 min and no significant reduction in terms of its reusability. The influence on phase purity and the structural properties of the photocatalyst is significant for providing opportunities in developing an intensive study in an environmentally friendly solar photocatalyst. Abstract

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been proposed and actively explored as innovative carriers for drug delivery applications. The functionalization of carbon nanotubes can improve substantially their dispersability and biocompatibility profile, thus offering the potential exploitation of carbon nanotubes in drug administration. In this study, the multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized using concentrated nitric acid (68%) and sulfuric acid (98%) in the ratio of 3:1 volume per volume by sonication techniques and were characterized using various characterization instruments. The generation of carboxylic groups was proven by FT-IR spectroscopy. In addition, the loading of aspirin (ASA) drug onto functionalized MWCNTs was done by sonication technique at different concentration of ASA drug solutions and at different sonication time. The presence of ASA attached onto functionalized MWCNTs was determined by FT-IR spectroscopy. The results from UV-Vis Spectrophotometer gave the percentage of ASA loading onto functionalized MWCNTs with the amount of 77.64% (77.64 mg/ 100 mg) at 30 000 ppm for 5 hours sonication. From the release study of ASA in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) at 37°C (human body temperature) and 39°C (fever temperature), the results show a fast release of ASA from ASA-f-MWCNTs composite for the first 5 hours compared to the commercialized aspirin tablets and followed by a controlled release at the following hours. It reveals that MWCNTs have the ability to improve the pharmacokinetics of ASA in the biomedical applications, thus it can be used to improve the drug delivery system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The current environmental pollution and global warming may cause a serious ecological crisis. The conversion of renewable resources, especially from biomass could be a promising option to alleviate this crisis. Traditionally, carbon produced from petrochemicals and coal are typically using large amount of energy and produce substantial quantities of pollutants. There is a need to develop alternative and effective methods to synthesize carbon from renewable resources with high performance and minimal environmental impact. Biochar is a rich carbon material derived from plant-based biomass. Biochar is one of the most ideal materials in various applications by considering it is low thermal conductivity, high porosity, high surface area, renewability, high stability, high carbon content and bulk density. In this regard, biochar has been widely recognized as the suitable candidate for sustainable carbon material. Thus, in this review, recent progresses towards the applications of biochar-based materials in various applications, such as wastewater treatment, soil amendments, catalyst or catalyst precursors and energy storage, are summarized and discussed. The various sources of biomass, synthesis techniques, and the effects of various factors involved in the carbonization process to generate different physicochemical properties biochar from the biomass is elaborated. Also, this review is highlighting the characteristics of the biochar and the carbonization mechanisms of different synthesis technologies. This review shows the great potential of different applications of biochar, which is expected to simulate new development to promote the use of biochar materials to achieve a sustainable environment and circular bio-economy.

49. Sulfonated SnO 2 nanocatalysts via a self-propagating combustion method for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate.

Abstract

Biodiesel derived from palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) was produced via catalytic esterification using sulfonated tin oxide (HSO 3 - /SnO 2 ) as the superacid solid catalyst. In this work, the SnO 2 catalyst was synthesised by the self-propagating combustion (SPC) method, and activated using chlorosulfonic acid. The SPC method was able to produce nano-sized particles with homogenous size and shape that were anchored with many HSO 3 - ions, resulting in more exceptional acid properties that effectively esterified the PFAD feedstock into FAMEs (fatty acid methyl esters). Several studies based on metal oxide-based catalysts were also included for comparison. Under the optimised conditions of 9 : 1 (methanol-to-PFAD molar ratio), 4 wt% (catalyst loading), 100 °C (reaction temperature) and 3 h (reaction time), the FFA conversion and FAME yield were 98.9% and 93.8%, respectively. Besides, the sulfonated SnO 2 -spc catalyst can be reused in up to five consecutive cycles with an acceptable esterification performance and minimal sulfur leaching. It is worth mentioning that the SPC method is a greener and simpler technique to obtain the nanocatalysts. Overall, the production of FAME from low value, cheaper, abundant, and non-edible PFAD feedstock, assisted by a non-transition metal oxide of sulfonated SnO 2 catalyst, could reduce the cost of biodiesel production., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)
