The present work investigates the corrosion behavior of Al0.1CoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA) in various concentrations of chloride-containing solutions. Electrochemical tests exhibit overall excellent corrosion resistance of this alloy against the attack of Cl−-containing solutions. The main type of corrosion topography presents an intergranular feature. In addition, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) investigation of the HEA samples under immersion test suggests chloride anion–containing environment leads to the decline of passivation film quality. Further analysis of XPS results reveals that significant amounts of elements exist with atomic states in the passive films.

Abstract The present study demonstrates that Ti-based metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) with a normal composition of Ti43Zr32Ni6Ta5Be14 containing ductile dendrites dispersed in the glass matrix has been developed, and deformation mechanisms about the tensile property have been investigated by focusing on twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) effect. The Ti-based MGMC has excellent tensile properties and pronounced tensile work-hardening capacity, with a yield strength of 1100 MPa and homogeneous elongation of 4%. The distinguished strain hardening is ascribed to the formation of deformation twinning within the dendrites. Twinning generated in the dendrites works as an obstacle for the rapid propagation of shear bands, and then, the localized necking is avoided, which ensures the ductility of such kinds of composites. Besides, a finite-element model (FEM) has been established to explain the TWIP effect which brings out a work-hardening behavior in the present MGMC instead of a localized strain concentration. According to the plasticity theory of traditional crystal materials and some new alloys, TWIP effect is mainly controlled by stacking fault energy (SFE), which has been analyzed intensively in the present MGMC.

Scattering mechanical performances of brittle La- and Mg-based BMGs are found in the present study. Upon dynamic loading, there exist largely scattered fracture strengths even if the strain rates are under the same order, and the BMG systems are the same. The negative strain rate dependence for La- and Mg-based BMGs is obtained, i.e., a decreased fracture strength is dominating from quasi-static to dynamic compression. At cryogenic temperatures, distinguishingly low fracture strengths are available for these two brittle BMGs, and decreased tolerance to accommodate strains makes BMGs more and more brittle. It is concluded that the scattering mechanical performances of brittle BMGs should be carefully evaluated before actual applications.

Presently, an exponential decay of shearing stresses with the time during jerky flows in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass is revealed. The flow stresses with the time satisfy the following equation: σ = A · e−B · x, where A = −158.24*exp ( − N/47.60) + 1939.63 (N = 1, 2, 3…), and the mean value of obtained B is −0.13 with a Normal distribution. During jerky flows, the viscous shearing layer is formed, and the exponential decay of shear banding is present. The evolvement of shear bands is explained by the consumption of free volumes during flows.

Instrumented nanoindentation tests were used to investigate the mechanical properties of Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glass. The corresponding loading strain rates were ranged from 0.002 s-1, 0.02 s-1 to 0.2 s-1. Plastic flow of this material exhibited remarkable serrations at low strain rates and increasingly became weakening until disappearance with increasing indentation strain rate, implying strong rate sensitivity. A significant pile-up around the indents was observed through atomic force microscopy, which suggested a highly localized plastic deformation. Mechanism governing the deformation was tentatively discussed in terms of the increasing process of free volume with a negligible temperature rise under low strain rate, which well explained the declining trend of elastic modulus and hardness with an increase of indentation depth. In-situ dendrite/metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) with a composition of Ti46Zr20V12Cu5Be17 exhibit ultimate tensile strength of 1510 MPa and fracture strain of about 7.6%. A tensile deformation model is established, based on the five-stage classification: (1) elastic-elastic, (2) elastic-plastic, (3) plastic-plastic (yield platform), (4) plastic-plastic (work hardening), and (5) plastic-plastic (softening) stages, analogous to the tensile behavior of common carbon steels. The constitutive relations strongly elucidate the tensile deformation mechanism. In parallel, the simulation results by a finite-element method (FEM) are in good agreement with the experimental findings and theoretical calculations. The present study gives a mathematical model to clarify the work-hardening behavior of dendrites and softening of the amorphous matrix. Furthermore, the model can be employed to simulate the tensile behavior of in-situ dendrite/MGMCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We proposed a scheme to describe the spatial correlation between two atoms in metallic glasses. Pair distribution function in a model iron was fully decomposed into several shells and can be presented as the spread of nearest neighbor correlation via distance. Moreover, angle distribution function can also be decomposed into groups. We demonstrate that there is close correlation between pair distribution function and angle distribution function for metallic glasses.
