Pathological myopia (PM) is a severe ocular disease leading to blindness. As a traditional noninvasive diagnostic method, fundus color photography (FCP) is widely used in detecting PM due to its high fidelity and precision. However, manual examination of fundus photographs for PM is time-consuming and prone to high error rates. Existing automated detection technologies have yet to study the detailed classification in diagnosing different stages of PM lesions. In this paper, we proposed an intelligent system which utilized Resnet101 technology to multi-categorically diagnose PM by classifying FCPs with different stages of lesions. The system subdivided different stages of PM into eight subcategories, aiming to enhance the precision and efficiency of the diagnostic process. It achieved an average accuracy rate of 98.86% in detection of PM, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 98.96%. For the eight subcategories of PM, the detection accuracy reached 99.63%, with an AUC of 99.98%. Compared with other widely used multi-class models such as VGG16, Vision Transformer (VIT), EfficientNet, this system demonstrates higher accuracy and AUC. This artificial intelligence system is designed to be easily integrated into existing clinical diagnostic tools, providing an efficient solution for large-scale PM screening.

Abstract Visual impairments and blindness are major public health concerns globally. Effective eye disease screening aided by artificial intelligence (AI) is a promising countermeasure, although it is challenged by practical constraints such as poor image quality in community screening. The recently developed ophthalmic foundation model RETFound has shown higher accuracy in retinal image recognition tasks. This study developed an RETFound-enhanced deep learning (DL) model for multiple-eye disease screening using real-world images from community screenings. Our results revealed that our DL model improved the sensitivity and specificity by over 15% compared with commercial models. Our model also shows better generalisation ability than AI models developed using traditional processes. Additionally, decision curve analysis underscores the higher net benefit of employing our model in both urban and rural settings in China. These findings indicate that the RETFound-enhanced DL model can achieve a higher net benefit in community-based screening, advocating its adoption in low- and middle-income countries to address global eye health challenges.

Objective This study aimed to investigate the influence of peripapillary atrophy (PPA) area and axial elongation on the longitudinal changes in macular choroidal thickness (ChT) in young individuals with myopia.Methods and analysis In this longitudinal investigation, 431 eyes—342 categorised as non-high myopia (non-HM) and 89 as HM—were examined for 2 years. Participants were examined with swept-source optical coherence tomography. The macular ChT, PPA area and axial length (AL) were measured at baseline and follow-up visits. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with ChT changes. Summary: Accurate detection and timely care for patients with high myopia present significant challenges. We developed a deep learning (DL) system enhanced by a self-supervised learning (SSL) approach to improve the automatic diagnosis of myopic maculopathy (MM). Using a dataset of 7,906 images from the Shanghai High Myopia Screening Project and a public validation set of 1,391 images from MMAC2023, our method significantly outperformed conventional techniques. Internally, it achieved 96.8% accuracy, 83.1% sensitivity, and 95.6% specificity, with AUC values of 0.982 and 0.999. Externally, it maintained 89.0% accuracy, 71.7% sensitivity, and 87.8% specificity, with AUC values of 0.978 and 0.973. The model’s Cohen’s kappa values exceeded 0.8, indicating substantial agreement with retinal experts. Our SSL-enhanced DL approach offers high accuracy and potential to enhance large-scale myopia screenings, demonstrating broader significance in improving early detection and treatment of MM.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the influence of high altitude on myopia, macular choroidal thickness (mCT), and macular retinal thickness (mRT) in adolescents. Methods: Two schools, one in Shanghai (at sea level) and one in Shigatse, Tibet (more than 4000 m above sea level), were selected. Refractive error was measured by an autorefractor instrument and subjective refraction, and mCT and mRT were measured at three concentric circles by optical coherence tomography. Student's t-test, Chi-square test, and multiple linear regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 1114 participants (657 and 457 in Shanghai and Tibet, respectively) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. The average age of the participants was 18.81 ± 1.10 years, and 44.34% were males. The spherical equivalent (SE) of adolescents in Shanghai was significantly lower than that of adolescents in Tibet (-4.14 ± 2.37 D and -2.12 ± 1.87 D, P < 0.01). The prevalence of myopia and high myopia among adolescents in Shanghai (94.52%, 19.48%) was significantly higher than those among adolescents in Tibet (44.74%, 2.41%) (P < 0.01). The mCT of Tibetan adolescents was significantly thicker than that of Shanghai adolescents (295.80 ± 62.46 μm and 218.71 ± 61.42 μm, P < 0.01), especially the central mCT. The mRT of Tibetan adolescents was also thicker than that of Shanghai adolescents (301.42 ± 23.26 μm and 281.04 ± 12.24 μm, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Compared with Shanghai adolescents, the choroid of Tibet adolescents is thicker, and the myopia prevalence is lower. It is speculated that increased altitude is associated with the thickening of mCT and a low myopia prevalence.

BackgroundCommunity-based telemedicine screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) has been highly recommended worldwide. However, evidence from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) on the choice between artificial intelligence (AI)–based and manual grading–based telemedicine screening is inadequate for policy making. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to test whether the AI model is more worthwhile than manual grading in community-based telemedicine screening for DR in the context of labor costs in urban China. MethodsWe conducted cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses by using decision-analytic Markov models with 30 one-year cycles from a societal perspective to compare the cost, effectiveness, and utility of 2 scenarios in telemedicine screening for DR: manual grading and an AI model. Sensitivity analyses were performed. Real-world data were obtained mainly from the Shanghai Digital Eye Disease Screening Program. The main outcomes were the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) and the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR). The ICUR thresholds were set as 1 and 3 times the local gross domestic product per capita. ResultsThe total expected costs for a 65-year-old resident were US $3182.50 and US $3265.40, while the total expected years without blindness were 9.80 years and 9.83 years, and the utilities were 6.748 quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) and 6.753 QALYs in the AI model and manual grading, respectively. The ICER for the AI-assisted model was US $2553.39 per year without blindness, and the ICUR was US $15,216.96 per QALY, which indicated that AI-assisted model was not cost-effective. The sensitivity analysis suggested that if there is an increase in compliance with referrals after the adoption of AI by 7.5%, an increase in on-site screening costs in manual grading by 50%, or a decrease in on-site screening costs in the AI model by 50%, then the AI model could be the dominant strategy. ConclusionsOur study may provide a reference for policy making in planning community-based telemedicine screening for DR in LMICs. Our findings indicate that unless the referral compliance of patients with suspected DR increases, the adoption of the AI model may not improve the value of telemedicine screening compared to that of manual grading in LMICs. The main reason is that in the context of the low labor costs in LMICs, the direct health care costs saved by replacing manual grading with AI are less, and the screening effectiveness (QALYs and years without blindness) decreases. Our study suggests that the magnitude of the value generated by this technology replacement depends primarily on 2 aspects. The first is the extent of direct health care costs reduced by AI, and the second is the change in health care service utilization caused by AI. Therefore, our research can also provide analytical ideas for other health care sectors in their decision to use AI.

Abstract Background Myopic maculopathy (MM) is the most serious and irreversible complication of pathologic myopia, which is a major cause of visual impairment and blindness. Clinic proposed limited number of factors related to MM. To explore additional features strongly related with MM from optic disc region, we employ a machine learning based radiomics analysis method, which could explore and quantify more hidden or imperceptible MM-related features to the naked eyes and contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of MM and therefore may assist to distinguish the high-risk population in an early stage. Methods A total of 457 eyes (313 patients) were enrolled and were divided into severe MM group and without severe MM group. Radiomics analysis was applied to depict features significantly correlated with severe MM from optic disc region. Receiver Operating Characteristic were used to evaluate these features’ performance of classifying severe MM. Results Eight new MM-related image features were discovered from the optic disc region, which described the shapes, textural patterns and intensity distributions of optic disc region. Compared with clinically reported MM-related features, these newly discovered features exhibited better abilities on severe MM classification. And the mean values of most features were markedly changed between patients with peripapillary diffuse chorioretinal atrophy (PDCA) and macular diffuse chorioretinal atrophy (MDCA). Conclusions Machine learning and radiomics method are useful tools for mining more MM-related features from the optic disc region, by which complex or even hidden MM-related features can be discovered and decoded. In this paper, eight new MM-related image features were found, which would be useful for further quantitative study of MM-progression. As a nontrivial byproduct, marked changes between PDCA and MDCA was discovered by both new image features and clinic features.

Abstract Background To investigate the associations of lens power with age, axial length (AL), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) in Chinese adults aged 50 and above. Methods Random clustering sampling was used to identify adults aged 50 years and above in urban regions of Shanghai. The participants underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including subjective refraction, autorefraction, and IOL-Master. The crystalline lens power was calculated using Bennett’s formula. Results A total of 4177 adults were included. A linear decrease in lens power was observed both with age and with AL, followed by a stop of lens power loss after the age of 70 or when AL ≥ 25 mm, respectively. Abstract Background To investigate the distribution of peripheral anterior chamber depth (ACD) and the relationship between peripheral ACD and gonioscopy compared to other ocular parameters for primary angle closure disease (PACD) screening. We performed a population-based survey in Pudong New District of Shanghai, China, in 2011. Methods Cross-sectional study. Adults 50 and older were enrolled from a population-based study using cluster random sampling in Pudong New District, Shanghai. Remote ocular screening was performed with digital anterior eye structure photography. Van Herrick measurements were used to evaluate the peripheral ACD, the depth of the peripheral anterior chamber, and corneal thickness (CT), and the ACD to CT ratio was calculated. Subjects with peripheral ACD less than 0.5 CT were made follow-up appointments for clinical examination with gonioscopy. Receiver operating characteristic curves (ROC) were generated to show the performance of different tests in screening for primary angle closure disease (PACD). Results Two thousand five hundred twenty-eight adults participated in the study with 91 patients diagnosed with PACD. Two thousand four hundred sixty-three subjects had valid data in the right eye available for analysis. Cholesterol is an essential substance in mammalian cells, and cholesterol metabolism plays crucial roles in multiple biological functions. Dysregulated cholesterol metabolism is a metabolic hallmark in several cancers, beyond the Warburg effect. Reprogrammed cholesterol metabolism has been reported to enhance tumorigenesis, metastasis and chemoresistance in multiple cancer types, including ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is one of the most aggressive malignancies worldwide. Alterations in metabolic pathways are characteristic features of ovarian cancer; however, the specific role of cholesterol metabolism remains to be established. In this report, we provide an overview of the key proteins involved in cholesterol metabolism in ovarian cancer, including the rate-limiting enzymes in cholesterol biosynthesis, and the proteins involved in cholesterol uptake, storage and trafficking. Also, we review the roles of cholesterol and its derivatives in ovarian cancer and the tumor microenvironment, and discuss promising related therapeutic targets for ovarian cancer.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to explore the association between diabetic retinopathy (DR) and the variants of uncoupling proteins (UCPs) genes in a Chinese population of type 2 diabetes, in total and in patients of different glycemic status separately. Methods This case-control study included a total of 3107 participants from two datasets, among which 662 were DR patients (21.31%). Eighteen tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of UCP1, UCP2, and UCP3 were selected as genetic markers. TaqMan probes, Sequenom MassARRAY MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry platform and Affymetrix Genome-Wide Human SNP Array were used for genotyping. Online SHEsis software was used for association analysis. Bonferroni correction was used for multiple comparisons correction. Results Three SNPs of UCP1: rs7688743 (A allele, OR = 1.192, p = 0.013), rs3811787 (T allele, OR = 0.863, p = 0.023), and rs10011540 (G allele, OR = 1.368, p = 0.004) showed association with DR after the adjustment of glucose, but only rs10011540 was marginally significantly associated with DR when Bonferroni correction was strictly applied (padj = 0.048). In patients with uncontrolled glucose, rs7688743 (A allele, p = 0.012, OR = 1.309), rs10011540 (G allele, p = 0.033, OR = 1.432), and rs3811787 (T allele, p = 0.022, OR = 0.811) were associated with DR, while in participants with well controlled glucose, the rs2734827 of UCP3 was associated with DR (A allele, p = 0.017, OR = 0.532). Rs3811787 of UCP1 showed a protective effect to sight threatening DR (T allele, p = 0.007, OR = 0.490), and the association existed after the adjustment for environmental factors and the correction. In patients with uncontrolled glucose, the rs3811787 of UCP1 (T allele, p = 0.017, OR = 0.467) and the rs591758 of UCP3 (C allele, p = 0.026, OR = 0.103) were associated with STDR. While in those with well controlled glucose, only the rs7688743 of UCP1 showed a protective effect (A allele, p = 0.024, OR = 0.049). Background: To characterize the longitudinal changes of macular vessel density in young adults and its associated factors.Methods: The right eyes of 309 participants (75 high myopic, 194 mild-to-moderate myopic, and 40 healthy) were followed up for 21 months. OCTA images were acquired at two visits using follow-up scans. Macular vessel density was calculated globally and in the nine early treatment diabetic retinopathy study (ETDRS) subfields of the macula superficial layer.Results: The macular vessel density significantly decreased in young myopes after a 21-month follow up (p < 0.05), with variations among sectors. Compared with healthy eyes, HM group exhibited a faster reduction in global macular vessel density (p = 0.0307) as well as in sectors of inner-inferior (II), inner-temporal (IT), and outer-temporal (OT) (all p < 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis showed that longer baseline axial length (AL) was significantly associated with larger reduction of macular vessel density in the inner-inferior, inner-temporal and outer-temporal sectors (all p < 0.05).Conclusions: Compared with emmetropes, high myopes presented greater loss of macular vessel density over time in global and in the inner-inferior, inner-temporal and outer-temporal sectors. A longer baseline AL was associated with larger changes of macular vessel density in the inner-inferior, inner-temporal and outer-temporal sectors.

Purpose: To explore the characteristics and associated factors of fundus tessellation, especially the alternation of choroidal thickness among different degrees of tessellated fundus in young adults.Design: Cross-sectional, population-based study.Methods: A total of 796 students were included in the study and underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examinations, including anterior segment examinations and swept-source optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements. The degree of tessellated fundus was assessed by fundus photographs applying an early treatment of diabetic retinopathy study grid to evaluate the location of fundus tessellation and then divided into five groups. The topographic variation and factors, tilted disc ratio, parapapillary atrophy (PPA), retinal thickness (ReT), choroidal thickness (ChT), and subfoveal scleral thickness (SST) related to tessellated fundus were analyzed.Results: Compared to normal fundus, tessellated fundus had a lower spherical equivalent (SE) (p < 0.0001), worse best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA)(p = 0.043), longer axial length (AL) (p < 0.0001), thinner retina (p < 0.0001), thinner (p < 0.0001) choroid, and thinner sclera in center fovea (p = 0.0035). Among all subfields of macular and peripapillary regions, center fovea and macula-papillary region showed the most significant decrease in choroidal thickness. The proportion of fundus tessellation significantly increased with lower body weight index (BMI) (p = 0.0067), longer AL (p < 0.0001), larger PPA(p = 0.0058), thinner choroid (p < 0.0001), and thinner sclera (p < 0.0001).Conclusions: Eyes showed more severe myopic morphological alternation with the increasement of proportion of fundus tessellation to the center fovea, including a significant decrease in both choroid and scleral thickness. Choroidal thinning may progress most rapidly in the macula-papillary region as fundus tessellation approaches to the center fovea.

Purpose: To construct quantifiable models of imaging features by machine learning describing early changes of optic disc and peripapillary region, and to explore their performance as early indicators for choroidal thickness (ChT) in young myopic patients.Methods: Eight hundred and ninety six subjects were enrolled. Imaging features were extracted from fundus photographs. Macular ChT (mChT) and peripapillary ChT (pChT) were measured on swept-source optical coherence tomography scans. All participants were divided randomly into training (70%) and test (30%) sets. Imaging features correlated with ChT were selected by LASSO regression and combined into new indicators of optic disc (IODs) for mChT (IOD_mChT) and for pChT (IOD_pChT) by multivariate regression models in the training set. The performance of IODs was evaluated in the test set.Results: A significant correlation between IOD_mChT and mChT (r = 0.650, R2 = 0.423, P < 0.001) was found in the test set. IOD_mChT was negatively associated with axial length (AL) (r = −0.562, P < 0.001) and peripapillary atrophy (PPA) area (r = −0.738, P < 0.001) and positively associated with ovality index (r = 0.503, P < 0.001) and torsion angle (r = 0.242, P < 0.001) in the test set. Every 1 × 10 μm decrease in IOD_mChT was associated with an 8.87 μm decrease in mChT. A significant correlation between IOD_pChT and pChT (r = 0.576, R2 = 0.331, P < 0.001) was found in the test set. IOD_pChT was negatively associated with AL (r = −0.478, P < 0.001) and PPA area (r = −0.651, P < 0.001) and positively associated with ovality index (r = 0.285, P < 0.001) and torsion angle (r = 0.180, P < 0.001) in the test set. Every 1 × 10 μm decrease in IOD_pChT was associated with a 9.64 μm decrease in pChT.Conclusions: The study introduced a machine learning approach to acquire imaging information of early changes of optic disc and peripapillary region and constructed quantitative models significantly correlated with choroidal thickness. The objective models from fundus photographs represented a new approach that offset limitations of human annotation and could be applied in other areas of fundus diseases.

Purpose: To investigate the morphologic features and identify the risk factors of myopic choroidal neovascularization (CNV).Methods: Eighty-eight eyes of 69 consecutive patients with myopic CNV were included in this study. About 109 eyes of 78 pathologic myopia patients without myopic CNV were randomly selected as the control group. Morphologic features and parameters including scleral thickness (ST), choroidal thickness (CT), posterior staphyloma height and the presence of scleral perforating vessels were obtained and measured by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the risk factors for myopic CNV.Results: Patients with myopic CNV had relatively shorter axial length (P < 0.001) and thicker sclera (P < 0.001) compared to those without. After adjusting age, gender and axial length, thick sclera (OR = 1.333, P < 0.001 per 10-μm increase) and thin choroid (OR = 0.509, P < 0.001 per 10-μm increase) were associated with the presence of myopic CNV. Scleral perforating vessels were detected in the area of myopic CNV in 78.67% of the subjects.Conclusions: A relatively thicker sclera and a thinner choroid are the biological indicators for myopic CNV on SS-OCT. Scleral perforating vessels may also play a pivotal role in the formation of myopic CNV.

Capsule network (CapsNet) can recognize the objects by encoding the part-whole relationships in a way similar to our human perceptual system and has already shown its great potential in image classification tasks. However, it is limited to the real domain while the complex numbers having much richer representational capacity and facilitating the noise-robust memory retrieval mechanisms. Therefore, we propose two architectures: Complex-valued Dense CapsNet (Cv-CapsNet) and Complex-valued Diverse CapsNet (Cv-CapsNet++), each of them consists of three stages. In the first stage, multi-scale complex-valued features are obtained by the restricted dense complex-valued subnetwork. Particularly, Cv-CapsNet++ utilizes a three-level Cv-CapsNet hierarchical model to extract the multi-scale high-level complex-valued features in order to adapt to the complicated datasets. In the second stage, these complex-valued features are encoded into the complex-valued primary capsules, Particularly, Cv-CapsNet++ encodes the complex-valued features from different hierarchies into the multi-dimensional complex-valued primary capsules. In the third stage, we generalize the dynamic routing algorithm to the complex-valued domain and employ it to fuse the real- and imaginary-valued information of complex-valued primary capsules. The experimental results show that the proposed architectures lead to fewer trainable parameters, better performance, and fewer iterations during training than Real-valued CapsNets (Rv-CapsNets) with similar structure and original CapsNet on FashionMNIST and CIFAR10 datasets.

Abstract Background Our study aimed to investigate the ocular surface health of Shanghai University students. Methods This is a cross-sectional study carried out among freshmen and sophomores on the main campus of Shanghai University. Questionnaires including the widely-used ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and the Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) were completed first, and then ocular examinations were conducted regarding height & weight, blood pressure and heart rate, optometry, intraocular pressure exam, vision and subjective refraction, Aladdin, Macular pigment density measurement, tear test, anterior segment examination, fundus photography, ophthalmologist check, TOPCON OCT check, and Collin’s fundus blood test. Results Totally 901 students were involved in our five-day study. The prevalence of myopia was 92% (the spherical equivalent refraction (SER) 1) was 10%, and corneal sensation decline rate (≤ 30 mm) was 12%. 4.5% of subjects (n = 40) had moderate or severe anxiety, 78% were mild and a small portion (17.5%) didn’t have anxiety at all. No statistical significant association was found between anxiety with DED, fluorescein staining or with corneal sensation (all p > 0.05). However, subjects with DED had more symptoms of anxiety. Results also showed that students who kept eye strain for a long time were more inclined to have DED (12.5%: 6.9%, p = 0.0407, 95% CI); those who watched mobile phones and/or computers for over eight hours daily were more vulnerable to DED and fluorescein staining than others (14.1%: 8.6%, p = 0.0129; 13.0%: 8.3%, p = 0.0233, 95% CI). Conclusions Keeping eye strain or near work for a long time is associated with DED, while students with DED tend to encounter anxiety symptoms. The prevalence of myopia in Chinese university students is still high. We consider it necessary to provide education to university students about the good eye-using habits, and to diagnose anxiety for student patients with DED.

Abstract Background This study was performed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of dry eye disease (DED) in community-based type 2 diabetic patients and to identify the associated factors related with DED. Methods A total of 1360 type 2 diabetic patients in the Beixinjing community were randomly selected. All participants were given a questionnaire that assessed basic information and subjective symptoms.DED was diagnosed using the revised Japanese DED diagnostic criteria. All subjects underwent a routine ophthalmic examination, corneal sensitivity test, tear film break-up time(BUT) test, Schirmer I test, fluorescein and lissamine green staining(FL) and fundus photography. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) was graded according to the International severity scale of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. Abstract Background It was reported that lack of knowledge, less confidence of medical services, commute difficulties, and poor economic conditions would be the main barriers for cataract surgery practice. The influencing factors could have changed in cities with high developing speed. Shanghai is one of the biggest cities in China and the world. The purpose of the study was to explore the factors influencing cataract surgery practice in Shanghai. Methods This was a population-based, cross-sectional study. A total of 2342 cataract patients older than 50 years old with cataract-induced visual impairment or who had undergone cataract surgery were recruited from rural and urban areas of Shanghai. Participants accepted a face-to-face structured questionnaire. Data were collected on patient demographics, education, work, income, health insurance, awareness about cataracts disease, treatment and related medical resources and deration policy, transportation and degree of satisfaction with hospitals. Results There were 417 patients who had received cataract surgery, 404 of them supplied complete information in the questionnaire. More female subjects (64.6%) than male subjects (35.4%) accepted cataract surgery among the 404 patients. Of the patients with cataract history, 36.4% of surgery patients were equal or older than 80. More people with urban medical insurance received surgery (p = 0.036). Patients who received surgery were more satisfied with local medical service (p = 0.032). In urban area, Lower income and difficulties with commutes were related to a higher rate of surgery. Conclusions Cataract patients with the following features were more inclined to receive surgery: female, old age, better awareness. In urban areas low income and difficult commutes did not represent barriers for cataract surgery, probably because of appropriate cataract surgery promotion policies recent years in Shanghai. In rural areas, better healthcare reimbursement policies would likely lead to a higher uptake of cataract surgery. Further cohort studies with more controls could supply stronger evidence for our viewpoint.

SWItch/Sucrose NonFermentable (SWI/SNF) is a set of multi-subunits chromatin remodeling complexes, playing important roles in a variety of biological processes. Loss-of-function mutations in the genes encoding SWI/SNF subunits have been reported in more than 20% of human cancers. Thus, it was widely considered as a tumor suppressor in the past decade. However, recent studies reported that some genes encoding subunits of SWI/SNF complexes were amplified and play oncogenic roles in human cancers. In present study, we summarized the genetic alteration spectrum of SWI/SNF complexes, and firstly systematically estimated both the copy number variations and point mutations of all 30 genes encoding the subunits in this complex. Additionally, the bioinformatics analyses were performed for two significantly amplified genes, ACTL6A and BRD9, to investigate their oncogenic roles in human cancers. Our findings may lay a foundation for the discovery of potential treatment targets in SWI/SNF complexes of cancers.

To report calculated crystalline lens power and describe the distribution of ocular biometry and its association with refractive error in older Chinese adults.Random clustering sampling was used to identify adults aged 50 years and above in Xuhui and Baoshan districts of Shanghai. Refraction was determined by subjective refraction that achieved the best corrected vision based on monocular measurement. Ocular biometry was measured by IOL Master. The crystalline lens power of right eyes was calculated using modified Bennett-Rabbetts formula.We analyzed 6099 normal phakic right eyes. The mean crystalline lens power was 20.34 ± 2.24D (range: 13.40-36.08). Lens power, spherical equivalent, and anterior chamber depth changed linearly with age; however, axial length, corneal power and AL/CR ratio did not vary with age. The overall prevalence of hyperopia, myopia, and high myopia was 48.48% (95% CI: 47.23%-49.74%), 22.82% (95% CI: 21.77%-23.88%), and 4.57% (95% CI: 4.05-5.10), respectively. The prevalence of hyperopia increased linearly with age while lens power decreased with age. In multivariate models, refractive error was strongly correlated with axial length, lens power, corneal power, and anterior chamber depth; refractive error was slightly correlated with best corrected visual acuity, age and sex.Lens power, hyperopia, and spherical equivalent changed linearly with age; Moreover, the continuous loss of lens power produced hyperopic shifts in refraction in subjects aged more than 50 years.

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of primary open-angle glaucoma among the urban population of Pudong New District, Shanghai.Methods: Three residents' committees were randomly selected from Pudong New District, and residents aged 50 and older were screened for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) from March to April 2011. In remote screening, the tests on visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure (IOP), and the photographs of anterior segment and fundus were used to identify POAG suspect. The suspected subjects were then reexamined with the tests on IOP, gonioscopy, Humphrey visual field test, and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness by optical coherence tomography (OCT). POAG was diagnosed according to the criteria defined by International Society for Geographic and Epidemiological Ophthalmology (ISGEO). Finally, POAG risk factors were evaluated using logistic regression analysis.Results: A total of 2528 citizens out of 3,146 eligible residents (80.36 %) participated in this study. Among the citizens, 72 were diagnosed to have POAG, giving the crude prevalence rate of 2.85 % (95 % CI:2.20 %-3.50 %) in general and age- and gender-adjusted prevalence rate of 2.8 % (95 % CI: 2.78 %-2.83 %). Among the 72 POAG patients, only 22 cases had IOP exceeding 21 mmHg while other 50 cases had IOP of 21 mmHg or less; nine cases had one eye blind (12.5 %). Intriguingly, only eight cases (11.11 %) had been diagnosed with POAG before this screening.Conclusions: More efforts are required for early screening and education on POAG in communities, especially in a POAG high-risk population.
