The “3060” plan fully demonstrates the determination of China’s economic and social green and clean development. As an important secondary energy source, hydrogen has the advantages of high energy density, green and pollution-free, etc. As an ideal energy source in the future, green hydrogen is the final state of hydrogen energy prepared by electrical energy through electrolysis of water. The development of renewable energy hydrogen production will certainly help to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutral. Therefore, the grid-connected control strategy of hydrogen production unit for weak grid is worthy of in-depth study. The research work in this paper is as follows: firstly, based on the analysis of the converter, a grid-connected control method of electric hydrogen production unit using virtual synchronization generator(VSG) control strategy is proposed. Secondly, a control method without phase-locked loop is adopted for the grid-connected phase synchronization part. Then, the stability of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated by using root locus plot. Finally, experimental verification is carried out. The experimental results show that the proposed control strategy makes the hydrogen production unit friendly to the weak grid with good adaptability, and at the same time, as a load, it can perform adaptive power regulation very well.

In the DC microgrid system, the bidirectional DC/DC converter is one of the most important components; thus, research on its control strategy has attracted widespread attention. Firstly, the single bidirectional DC/DC converter based on a sliding mode (variable structure) control (SMC) strategy exhibits an inherent contradiction between the reaching time and the chattering phenomenon. In order to address this problem, an SMC strategy based on the improved exponential reaching law was designed. This control strategy modifies the constant-speed reaching term and introduces the system state variable to indicate the chattering level, which not only improves the dynamic performance of the bidirectional DC/DC converter but also suppresses the chattering problem. Secondly, the bidirectional DC/DC converter group based on the traditional droop control strategy exhibits an inherent contradiction between load power allocation and bus voltage stabilization. In order to address this problem, an improved droop control strategy that takes the line impedance characteristics into account is proposed. This control strategy modifies the traditional droop control strategy by introducing virtual resistance and uses DC bus voltage information to replace the line impedance value. This ensures the accuracy of power allocation and stability of the DC bus voltage simultaneously. Finally, the stability of each designed strategy is verified individually. The combination of the two control strategies is applied to a group of bidirectional DC/DC converters group to conduct a semi-physical simulation experiment, and the results verify that the proposed control strategies are effective and feasible.

A Chinese solar greenhouse (CSG) is a highly efficient and energy-saving horticultural facility. Ventilation is significantly important for crop production in the greenhouse, and the vent configuration is the basis of the greenhouse design. Current CSG ventilation structures mostly include front bottom vents and top vents to create a suitable temperature environment for the normal development of crops. However, the ventilation capacity and efficiency are limited. In the present study, we proposed a comprehensive front bottom + top + back roof (FTB) ventilation configuration. The greenhouse ventilation was investigated during the summer season by means of field testing and simulation, and the performance of three ventilation structures—front bottom + top (FT), front bottom + back roof (FB) and FTB—was compared. The results showed that FTB stabilized the greenhouse temperature for 20 s less time than FT and FB. The cooling rate of FTB showed a 24.84% and 5.52% improvement over FT and FB, respectively, and the average temperature showed a 13.81% and 3.65% decrease, respectively. Moreover, the ventilation performance of the side walls was investigated in order to determine if they might serve as auxiliary structures for FTB ventilation. Nevertheless, the improvements of cooling rate, wind speed and average temperature were only 0.52%, 2.09% and 0.11%, respectively. The results demonstrated that the novel FTB ventilation proposed in the present study significantly improved ventilation efficiency and uniformity compared with conventional ventilation structures. The results presented herein provide theoretical support for the use and design of greenhouses suitable for China's special climate.

To improve the prediction accuracy of temperature and humidity in typical Chinese solar greenhouses, this paper proposed a new longwave/shortwave radiation modeling method using bond graph. This model takes into account sun position, useful incoming solar radiation model, sky longwave radiation model, inside longwave, and shortwave radiation model. The approach solves the problems caused by underestimating the effects of longwave radiation on night temperature and relative humidity. The study found that after a period of t = 7.5 h, with the increase of sun altitude angle, the internal temperature was significantly affected by the temperature rise of outside environment on sunny day. The sun altitude angle gradually falls over a period of t = 12.5 h (beginning at 12.30 p.m.). The decline in night temperature steadily slowed after a period of t = 20.5 h. On the other hand, the temperature variation has a multi-peak distribution and the warming rate of the CSG slows down on cloudy days. Furthermore, a good agreement between the experimental and simulation data were obtained, with a maximum temperature deviation of 2°C and maximum humidity deviation of 5%. The developed model is a universal and valuable approach that can be used for greenhouse climate simulation. Furthermore, it can be used as a support system during decision-making processes to help manage Chinese solar greenhouses more efficiently, which provides several control perspectives on the low-energy greenhouse in the future. This work has also provided several control perspectives on the low energy greenhouse in the future.

In this paper, the output consensus problem of DC microgrids with dynamic event-triggered control scheme is investigated. According to the properties of DC microgrids and multi-agent systems, the multi-agent systems function model for DC microgrids is provided. For making the multi-agent systems achieve output consensus, the non-periodic and periodic dynamic event-triggered control schemes are provided, respectively, which are classified according to the style of receiving information. By using a series of analysis, it can be proved that these two control schemes not only can make systems achieve output consensus, but also can avoid the Zeno-behavior successfully. Moreover, the periodic dynamic event-triggered control scheme does not need the continuous information transfer. Finally, a numerical example is provided to support our conclusions.

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is distributed throughout Asia and Europe and contains approximately twelve subspecies. Three subspecies, B. b. kiautschensis, B. b. ussuriensis, and B. b. tibetanus, are separately distributed in the refugia and plateau habitats of China. However, the genetics of these subspecies and populations have not been studied. Genetic differences were investigated among 32 individuals from six populations of these three B. bubo subspecies based on the mitochondrial genome. Low genetic diversity but high haplotype diversity was observed in these subspecies. The phylogenetic relationship of three B. bubo subspecies distributed in China was proven to be coordinated with geographic and environmental gradients. This study provides the first detailed insights into the mitochondrial genetic diversity of three Eurasian eagle-owl subspecies distributed in China and demonstrates the utility of the mitochondrial genome in intraspecific genetic population analyses of these eagle-owls.

Puerarin is the main biologically active isoflavone in Pueraria lobata and has a wide range of biological activities. However, due to its poor water solubility and low oral bioavailability, its clinical applications are restricted. Compared with puerarin, the Pueraria lobata extract (PLE) has better water solubility, lower toxicity, and less side effects. In this study, the pharmacokinetics of orally administered puerarin (100 mg/kg) and PLE (763 mg/kg, equivalent to 100.0 mg/kg of puerarin) to rats was investigated by the UHPLC-MS/MS method. Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) is considered as an opportunistic zoonotic pathogen that may cause gastroenteritis in humans and other animals. Wild birds may be as potential vectors of C. jejuni around urban and suburban areas. Here, 520 samples were collected from 33 wild bird species in urban and suburban areas, Beijing. In total 57 C. jejuni were isolated from seven species. It was found that Nineteen (33.33%, 19/57) isolates were resistant to at least one of 11 antibiotics, especially streptomycin (36.84%) and four isolates resistant to all. Nineteen (33.33%, 19/57) isolates were multi-drug resistance. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis of the isolates showed that 36 different sequence types (STs) belonged to four Clonal complexes and unassigned. Twenty STs (55.56%) and six alleles among them were first detected. Virulence genes including flaA, cadF, and the cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) gene cluster, were detected in all isolates, but truncated cdt gene clusters only detected in the isolates from the crow, daurian jackdaw and silver pheasant. In conclusion, it was the first detection of C. jejuni involved truncated cdt gene clusters from the silver pheasant. These wild birds around urban and suburban areas may pose potential public health problems as reservoir vectors of C. jejuni.

At present, the method of predicting wind power generation is mainly based on data integration calculation. Although this method is simple, it has shortcomings in short-term and ultra-short-term predictions owing to low accuracy. In this study, the clustering analysis data processing method is used to pre-process the meteorological wind power generation data, thus improving the data quality. This method builds model samples based on historical data with similar numerical weather prediction (NWP) characteristic parameters of the original sample data and forecast date, takes the NWP information of the forecast date as the basis of similarity measurement, and extracts effective data for the neural network prediction model after the improved clustering processing. Therefore, short-term wind power prediction analysis can be performed. Herein, the proposed data processing method is combined with the neural network model to create a software product that is applied to a wind farm in northeast China. The combined clustering data processing method of the wind power prediction model improved power prediction by ∼12% compared with that of the traditional continuous model. This demonstrates an obvious improvement in the prediction accuracy, thereby further proving the validity of the proposed method.

Forecasting the output power of large wind farms is helpful for planning reserve capacity in a mixed-generation power supply system. After classifying the reserves needed in a power system, this research focuses on the reserve components that are affected by wind–power fluctuations, the regulating, and load-following reserves. Considering the uncertainties in system load forecasts and wind–power forecasts, a general model for calculating the reserve requirements of a power system is proposed. Then, ultra-short-term forecasts of wind–power output 1 h into the future were studied, and a practical method that uses 10-min data to forecast wind output with a rolling average was proposed to predict the amount of power generation in the next hour. Then, using the RTS-96 dataset from the IEEE as an example, the reserve capacity requirement for the power system is determined according to the forecast uncertainty. Accurate predictive models for wind forecasting can reduce the needed reserve capacity of the system while guaranteeing the reliability and safety of the grid.

The area covered by Chinese-style solar greenhouses (CSGs) has been increasing rapidly. However, only a few pyranometers, which are fundamental for solar radiation sensing, have been installed inside CSGs. The lack of solar radiation sensing will bring negative effects in greenhouse cultivation such as over irrigation or under irrigation, and unnecessary power consumption. We aim to provide accurate and low-cost solar radiation estimation methods that are urgently needed. In this paper, a method of estimation of solar radiation inside CSGs based on a least mean squares (LMS) filter is proposed. The water required for tomato growth was also calculated based on the estimated solar radiation. Then, we compared the accuracy of this method to methods based on knowledge of astronomy and geometry for both solar radiation estimation and tomato water requirement. The results showed that the fitting function of estimation data based on the LMS filter and data collected from sensors inside the greenhouse was y = 0.7634x + 50.58, with the evaluation parameters of R2 = 0.8384, rRMSE = 23.1%, RMSE = 37.6 Wm−2, and MAE = 25.4 Wm−2. The fitting function of the water requirement calculated according to the proposed method and data collected from sensors inside the greenhouse was y = 0.8550x + 99.10 with the evaluation parameters of R2 = 0.9123, rRMSE = 8.8%, RMSE = 40.4 mL plant−1, and MAE = 31.5 mL plant−1. The results also indicate that this method is more effective. Additionally, its accuracy decreases as cloud cover increases. The performance is due to the LMS filter’s low pass characteristic that smooth the fluctuations. Furthermore, the LMS filter can be easily implemented on low cost processors. Therefore, the adoption of the proposed method is useful to improve the solar radiation sensing in CSGs with more accuracy and less expense.

Abstract Background Salidroside (SAL), derived from Rhodiola, shows protective effects in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) models, but its mechanisms are not fully elucidated. Objectives Investigate the therapeutic effects and the mechanism of SAL on PAH. Methods Monocrotaline was used to establish a PAH rat model. SAL’s impact on oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in lung tissues was analyzed using immunohistochemistry, ELISA, and Western blot. Untargeted metabolomics explored SAL’s metabolic regulatory mechanisms. Results SAL significantly reduced mean pulmonary artery pressure, right ventricular hypertrophy, collagen deposition, and fibrosis in the PAH rats. It enhanced antioxidant enzyme levels, reduced inflammatory cytokines, and improved NO bioavailability by upregulating endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), and protein kinase G (PKG) and decreases the expression of endothelin-1 (ET-1). Metabolomics indicated SAL restored metabolic balance in PAH rats, particularly in arginine metabolism. Conclusions SAL alleviates PAH by modulating arginine metabolism, enhancing NO synthesis, and improving pulmonary vascular remodeling.

Herein, a sequentially responsive peptide DNA bilingual nanobiosensor is developed, which allows integrated quantification of amyloid signaling pathway. In this system, upstream beta‐site amyloid precursor protein‐cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) protease and downstream Aβ oligomer (AβO) are designed as two inputs for the AND DNA logic gate. In the existence of both inputs, peptide substrate with aptamer can be sequentially cleaved, reporting electrochemical and fluorescence dual‐mode outputs. In comparison with conventional single protease activity assay based on peptide nanotechnology, this strategy permits accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) from normal subjects. More importantly, it can achieve distinguished diagnosis between AD and type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. This bilingual nanobiosensor is successfully applied to detect BACE1 (1–100 U mL−1) and AβO (5–1000 pg mL−1) with limit of detections as low as 0.10 U mL−1 and 0.76 pg mL−1, respectively. Furthermore, this strategy inspires advanced nanobiosensors to target the activation of other signaling pathways, which are potential tools for future biology and medicine investigation.

Abstract Background Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common chronic liver diseases. NAFLD leads to liver fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, and it also has systemic effects associated with metabolic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney disease, and malignant tumors. Therefore, it is important to diagnose NAFLD early to prevent these adverse effects. Methods The GSE89632 dataset was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database, and then the optimal genes were screened from the data cohort using lasso and Support Vector Machine Recursive Feature Elimination (SVM-RFE). The ROC values of the optimal genes for the diagnosis of NAFLD were calculated. The relationship between optimal genes and immune cells was determined using the DECONVOLUTION algorithm CIBERSORT. Finally, the specificity and sensitivity of the diagnostic genes were verified by detecting the expression of the diagnostic genes in blood samples from 320 NAFLD patients and liver samples from 12 mice. Results Through machine learning we identified FOSB, GPAT3, RGCC and RNF43 were the key diagnostic genes for NAFLD, and they were further demonstrated by a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. We found that the combined diagnosis of the four genes identified NAFLD samples well from normal samples (AUC = 0.997). FOSB, GPAT3, RGCC and RNF43 were strongly associated with immune cell infiltration. We also experimentally examined the expression of these genes in NAFLD patients and NAFLD mice, and the results showed that these genes are highly specific and sensitive. Conclusions Data from both clinical and animal studies demonstrate the high sensitivity, specificity and safety of FOSB, GPAT3, RGCC and RNF43 for the diagnosis of NAFLD. The relationship between diagnostic key genes and immune cell infiltration may help to understand the development of NAFLD. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) have been a group of disorders characterized by neuronal death and functional loss including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease (HD), etc. Since diagnostic methods for the NDs biomarkers have been based on traditional enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or Western Blotting, the antibody intrinsic drawbacks such as large molecular weight and high cost make early diagnosis of NDs quite challenging. The aptamers bridge this gap effectively and their versatile features such as small molecular weight, easy modification, high stability and low cost have been widely used to fabricate biosensors to diagnose NDs. Various aptamer-based biosensors have shown excellent performance in the early diagnosis of NDs. Several biomarkers including nucleic acid, protein, biomolecule, and exosome has been used as early diagnostic indicators for NDs. In this minireview, we aim to report the latest progress in aptasensors (including colorimetric, fluorescence, electrochemical and electrochemiluminescence, etc) for detecting NDs protein biomarkers, summarize principles of their functions along with challenges in the way to diagnose NDs and emphasize their future perspectives.

Abstract Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) migrate extensively using blood vessels as physical scaffolds in the developing central nervous system. Although the association of OPCs with the vasculature is critical for migration, the regulatory mechanisms important for OPCs proliferative and oligodendrocyte development are unknown. Here, a correlation is demonstrated between the developing vasculature and OPCs response during brain development. Deletion of endothelial stimulator of interferon genes (STING) disrupts angiogenesis by inhibiting farnesyl‐diphosphate farnesyltransferase 1 (FDFT1) and thereby reducing cholesterol synthesis. Furthermore, the perturbation of metabolic homeostasis in endothelial cells increases interleukin 17D production which mediates the signal transduction from endothelial cells to OPCs, which inhibits oligodendrocyte development and myelination and causes behavioral abnormalities in adult mice. Overall, these findings indicate how the endothelial STING maintains metabolic homeostasis and contributes to oligodendrocyte precursor cells response in the developing neocortex.

Introduction: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is gradually becoming one of the most common chronic liver diseases worldwide. Compared to chemical drugs, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has significant advantages in the treatment of NAFLD owing to its long history, remarkable efficacy, and low toxicity. Methods: The scientific databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure database (CNKI) were searched using the keywords of NAFLD, TCM, lipid metabolism, high-fat diet, bupleurum decoction, Yinchenhao decoction, Shugan Jiangzhi granules, Shugan Jianpi Jiangzhuo decoction, GanShuang granules, Gegen Qinlian decoction, bupleurum, Yinchen, Jiaogulan, Huangqin, Gegen, Baizhu, flavonoids, baicalein, luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, apigenin, isorhamnetin, hesperidin, icariin, rutin, soy isoflavones, puerarin, phlorizin, total flavonoids from hawthorn leaves, and total flavonoids from buckwheat flowers and leaves to overview the pathogenesis and treatment of NAFLD. Results: This review explained the causes of NAFLD, including factors like lipotoxicity, insulin resistance, ER stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, gut dysbiosis, and inflammation. Furthermore, the review provided a thorough overview of the effects and mechanisms of TCM in the treatment of NAFLD. This included an analysis of six TCM formulas, six single herbs, and 14 flavonoids derived from TCM. Discussion: TCM has proven to be highly effective in the treatment of NAFLD, with numerous Chinese medicine formulas and individual herbs being commonly used in clinical practice. The active components in these TCM, flavonoids, have demonstrated significant biological effects in addressing NAFLD. Conclusion: TCM has the potential to greatly enhance the treatment of NAFLD with minimal adverse reactions. Given these results, we are confident that TCM holds promising opportunities for the management of NAFLD and can offer valuable perspectives for future research.

Abstract Regulatory cell death is an important way to eliminate the DNA damage that accompanies the rapid proliferation of neural stem cells during cortical development, including pyroptosis, apoptosis, and so on. Here, the study reports that the absence of GSDMD‐mediated pyroptosis results in defective DNA damage sensor pathways accompanied by aberrant neurogenesis and autism‐like behaviors in adult mice. Furthermore, GSDMD is involved in organizing the mitochondrial electron transport chain by regulating the AMPK/PGC‐1α pathway to target Aifm3. This process promotes a switch from oxidative phosphorylation to glycolysis. The perturbation of metabolic homeostasis in neural progenitor cells increases lactate production which acts as a signaling molecule to regulate the p38MAPK pathway. And activates NF‐𝜿B transcription to disrupt cortex development. This abnormal proliferation of neural progenitor cells can be rescued by inhibiting glycolysis and lactate production. Taken together, the study proposes a metabolic axis regulated by GSDMD that links pyroptosis with metabolic reprogramming. It provides a flexible perspective for the treatment of neurological disorders caused by genotoxic stress and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism.

As one type of the important higher-order neural networks developed in the last decade, the Sigma-Pi-Sigma neural network has more powerful nonlinear mapping capabilities compared with other popular neural networks. This paper is concerned with a new Sigma-Pi-Sigma neural network based on a $ L_1 $ and $ L_2 $ regularization batch gradient method, and the numerical experiments for classification and regression problems prove that the proposed algorithm is effective and has better properties comparing with other classical penalization methods. The proposed model combines the sparse solution tendency of $ L_1 $ norm and the high benefits in efficiency of the $ L_2 $ norm, which can regulate the complexity of a network and prevent overfitting. Also, the numerical oscillation, induced by the non-differentiability of $ L_1 $ plus $ L_2 $ regularization at the origin, can be eliminated by a smoothing technique to approximate the objective function.

Successful seed germination and plant seedling growth often require association with endophytic bacteria. Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.) is a main weed during rice cultivation and has frequently been found in drought-prone fields such as cornfields in recent years. To determine whether endophytic bacteria enhance the survival chances of barnyard grass in dryland conditions, endophytic bacteria were collected from barnyard grass seeds. An endophytic bacterial strain, BC-14, was selected and confirmed as Cronobacter dublinensis based on its morphology, physiology, biochemistry, and genomic information. Moreover, C. dublinensis BC-14 secreted IAA in the Luria–Bertani broth up to 28.44 mg/L after 5 days; it could colonize the roots of barnyard grass. After the inoculation with seeds or the well-mixed planting soil, the bacterium can significantly increase the root length and plant height of barnyard grass under drought conditions. When comparing with the control group on the 28th day, it can be seen that the bacterium can significantly increase the contents of chlorophyll b (up to 7.58 times) and proline (37.21%); improve the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase (36.90%, 51.51%, and 12.09%, respectively); and reduce the content of malondialdehyde around 25.92%, which are correlated to the drought tolerance. The bacterial genomic annotation revealed that it contains growth-promoting and drought-resistant functional genes. In a word, C. dublinensis BC-14 can help barnyard grass suppress drought stress, promote plant growth, and enhance biomass accumulation, which is helpful to interpret the mechanism of weed adaptability in dry environments.

Abstract Activating the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway is critical for enhancing antitumor immunity and remodeling the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Herein, we report the preparation of STING‐activating nanoparticles via metal coordination‐driven assembly of a synthetic STING agonist (i.e., SR717) and a chemotherapeutic drug (i.e., curcumin). After intravenous administration, the assembled nanoparticles could efficiently accumulate in tumors to improve the bioavailability of SR717 and trigger potent STING pathway activation for effective immune responses. Meanwhile, the released curcumin evokes immunogenic cell death in tumors and regulates amino acid metabolism by inhibiting the activation of indoleamine 2,3‐dioxygenase 1, leading to the reversal of the immunosuppressive TME. The antitumor immunity induced by nanoparticles significantly inhibits the growth of primary, recurrent, and metastatic tumors. The assembled nanoparticles are promising for the co‐delivery of STING agonists and drugs in improved tumor chemo‐immunotherapy.

Abstract Background Mechanical ventilation can cause acute atrophy and injury in the diaphragm, which are related to adverse clinical results. However, the underlying mechanisms of ventilation-induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD) have not been well elucidated. The current study aimed to explore the role of cellular senescence in VIDD. Methods A total of twelve New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into 2 groups: (1) spontaneously breathing anaesthetized animals (the CON group) and (2) mechanically ventilated animals (for 48 h) in V-ACV mode (the MV group). Abstract Ustilago maydis is a pathogenic fungus in Basidiomycota causing corn smut disease. A strain of U. maydis YZZF202006 was isolated from the tumor of corn smut collected from Jingzhou city in China. The intracellular bacteria were confirmed inner hyphal of the strain YZZF202006 by PCR amplification and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and SYTO-9. An endohyphal bacterium YZUMF202001 was isolated from the protoplasts of the strain YZZF202006. It was gram-negative, short rod-shaped with smooth light yellow colony. The endohyphal bacterium was genomic evidenced as Klebsiella michiganensis on the basis of average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis and the phylogram. The endohyphal K. michiganensis may play an important role to help nitrogen fixation for fungi in the future.

Abstract Ferroptosis is an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death with distinct characteristics, including altered iron homeostasis, reduced defense against oxidative stress, and abnormal lipid peroxidation. Recent studies have provided compelling evidence supporting the notion that ferroptosis plays a key pathogenic role in many diseases such as various cancer types, neurodegenerative disease, diseases involving tissue and/or organ injury, and inflammatory and infectious diseases. Although the precise regulatory networks that underlie ferroptosis are largely unknown, particularly with respect to the initiation and progression of various diseases, ferroptosis is recognized as a bona fide target for the further development of treatment and prevention strategies. Over the past decade, considerable progress has been made in developing pharmacological agonists and antagonists for the treatment of these ferroptosis-related conditions. Here, we provide a detailed overview of our current knowledge regarding ferroptosis, its pathological roles, and its regulation during disease progression. Focusing on the use of chemical tools that target ferroptosis in preclinical studies, we also summarize recent advances in targeting ferroptosis across the growing spectrum of ferroptosis-associated pathogenic conditions. Finally, we discuss new challenges and opportunities for targeting ferroptosis as a potential strategy for treating ferroptosis-related diseases.

Objectives: To investigate the correlation between echocardiographic indicators and the expression level of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in premature infants (PIs) with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and the value of NT-proBNP in diagnosing symptomatic PDA (sPDA) in PIs whose gestational age (GA) was less than 32 weeks. Methods: Ninty premature infants were selected as the research objects, including 52 in the non-PDA group and 38 in the PDA group (26 sPDA cases and 12 cases with asymptomatic PDA (asPDA)) from February 2019 to March 2020. The general information of these infants was recorded, including gender, delivery method, maternal infection, and serum NT-proBNP level on the 3rd day after birth. They were screened by echocardiographic indicators under an artificial intelligence convolutional neural network (AI-CNN). The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were illustrated to decide serum NT-proBNP expression levels, thereby determining specificity and sensitivity of sPDA and the correlation between serum sPDA NTproBNP expression and echocardiographic indicators. Results: The expression level of serum NT-proBNP in the sPDA group was greater than that in the asPDA group and the non-PDA group (P<0.001). The serum NT-proBNP expression level was positively correlated with the diameter of the ductus arteriosus in the sPDA group (r=0.462, P<0.001); it was also positively correlated with the ratio of left atrium/aorta (LA/AO) (r=0.573, P<0.001), but was not correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (r=-0.015, P=0.747). Objectives: To explore the diagnostic effect of ultrasound imaging on the illness severity, and to analyze neurobehavioral development of neonates with Infectious Pneumonia (IPN), Self-Adaptation (SD), and Spatial Smoothing (SS) technologies were adopted to build SDSS. Then, the WFFSF algorithm based on Wiener Filtering (WF) and Feature Space Fusion (FSF) and the SNRP-FSF algorithm based on Signal-to-noise ratio post-filtering (SNRP) and FSF were introduced for comparison. Methods: One hundred and thirty-two neonates were divided into group without respiratory failure (S1) and respiratory failure group (S2). The study was conducted from March 2018 to July 2020. According to scoring systems for neonatal critically illness, they were divided into non-severe group (W1), severe group (W2), and extremely-severe group (W3). According to the Scale of Child Development Center of China (CDCC), they were divided into a normal neurobehavioral developmental group (P1) and an abnormal neurobehavioral developmental group (P2). Results: The normalized mean square distance l and normalized mean absolute distance f of SDSS algorithm were significantly lower than that of WFFSF algorithm and SNRP-FSF algorithm, and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) was significantly higher than that of WFFSF algorithm and SNRP-FSF algorithm (P<0.05). The lung ultrasound score (40.62±7.22%) of S1 was greatly higher than S2 group (28.47±6.29%) (P<0.05); the lung ultrasound score (39.13±8.25) in W1 was greatly higher than W2 (27.28±6.39) and W3 groups (14.33±7.03); neonates in group W2 had higher lung ultrasound scores than W3 (P<0.05), and lung ultrasound scores in P1 (42.57±8.58) was greatly higher than that the P2 group (26.49±6.09). Conclusion: In contrast with traditional algorithms, the SDSS algorithm based on AD has a better reconstruction effect on neonatal IPN ultrasound images. The lung ultrasound score can clearly indicate the severity of the disease and neurobehavioral development of neonate IPN, and the lung ultrasound score is negatively correlated with the severity of the child's disease and the abnormality of neurobehavioral development. Objectives: The paper uses block matching method combined with echocardiography to explore the value of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in predicting symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants. Methods: We selected premature infants born between February 2019 and March 2020, gestational age ≤32 weeks, and echocardiography within 48 hours to determine the presence of arterial ducts as the research object, monitor their clinical manifestations, and detect serum at three and five days after birth The level of NT-proBNP was checked with echocardiography, and the children were divided into PDA group and asymptomatic patent ductus arteriosus (aPDA) group according to the clinical manifestations and echocardiographic. Results: The area under the ROC curve of PDA predicted by serum NT-proBNP level at 3 days after birth was 0.949, the cut-off value was 27035pg/mL, the sensitivity was 92.3%, and the specificity was 94.6%; serum NT-proBNP level at 5 days after birth predicted the ROC curve of PDA The lower area is 0.924, the critical value is 6411 pg/mL, the sensitivity is 92.3%, and the specificity is 92.9%. Objective: Use of optimal Atlas segmentation algorithm to study the imaging signs of mycoplasma pneumonia with multi-slice spiral CT (HRCT), and to explore the value of HRCT in the diagnosis and efficacy in evaluation of mycoplasma pneumonia in children. Methods: The study retrospectively analyzed 72 patients diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia in our hospital from January 2017 to January 2019. The imaging data and clinical data of 72 patients were collected. The optimal Atlas segmentation algorithm was used to analyze the characteristics of CT examination, and the value of CT in the diagnosis of mycoplasma pneumonia and the evaluation of curative effect was summarized. Results: Among all patients, 37 cases were unilateral lesions, 35 cases were bilateral lesions, 19 cases were in the left upper lobe, 24 cases were in the left lower lobe, 21 cases were in the right upper lobe, 13 cases were in the right middle lobe, 25 The lesion was located in the right lower lobe. The main CT findings of the lesions before treatment were large patchy, spot-shaped shadows, and strip-shaped or ground-glass shadows. After treatment, the main CT findings of the lesions were reduced lesion density and reduced lesion range. Conclusion: CT can clearly show the pulmonary lesions of mycoplasma pneumonia, and its unique imaging signs can improve the clinical diagnosis accuracy. In addition, CT scans can evaluate the treatment effect according to the changes in the characteristics of the lesion, which has important value for the evaluation of the effect for clinical diagnosis and efficacy evaluation of mycoplasma pneumonia. Spin effect of the small diameter shaped charge results in the centrifugal stress during the jet stretching process. Consequently, the jet scatters, which deceases the jet penetration capability. In the present study, a multi-section method was proposed to design the spin-compensation liner. The spin-compensation rate (SCR) of the liner was defined as the specific angular velocity that a fluted liner can offset. Based on the plain stress theory, SPH numerical method was applied to study the converging process of the 2D fluted structure. The spin-compensation mechanism of the fluted structure was illustrated. Then, nine cross sections were chosen along the liner axis equidistantly. On each of the section, a 2D fluted structure was designed to offset a given initial angular velocity. After, the optimized fluted structures were integrated into a 3D fluted liner. Jet appearances of the normal liner and the fluted liners under different initial angular velocities were compared, which verifies the practicality of the multi-sectional method. The multi-section optimization method provides a new efficient method of designing the shaped charge liner for a specific usage.

Abstract Cancer cell receives extracellular signal inputs to obtain a stem-like status, yet how tumor microenvironmental (TME) neural signals steer cancer stemness to establish the hierarchical tumor architectures remains elusive. Here, a pan-cancer transcriptomic screening for 10852 samples of 33 TCGA cancer types reveals that cAMP-responsive element (CRE) transcription factors are convergent activators for cancer stemness. Deconvolution of transcriptomic profiles, specification of neural markers and illustration of norepinephrine dynamics uncover a bond between TME neural signals and cancer-cell CRE activity. Specifically, neural signal norepinephrine potentiates the stemness of proximal cancer cells by activating cAMP-CRE axis, where ATF1 serves as a conserved hub. Upon activation by norepinephrine, ATF1 potentiates cancer stemness by coordinated trans-activation of both nuclear pluripotency factors MYC/NANOG and mitochondrial biogenesis regulators NRF1/TFAM, thereby orchestrating nuclear reprograming and mitochondrial rejuvenating. Accordingly, single-cell transcriptomes confirm the coordinated activation of nuclear pluripotency with mitochondrial biogenesis in cancer stem-like cells. These findings elucidate that cancer cell acquires stemness via a norepinephrine-ATF1 driven nucleus-mitochondria collaborated program, suggesting a spatialized stemness acquisition by hijacking microenvironmental neural signals.

Abstract The regulation of neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation and differentiation during brain development is a precisely controlled process, with the production of different neuronal subtypes governed by strict timelines. Glutamate is predominantly used as a neurotransmitter by the subtypes of neurons in the various layers of the cerebral cortex. The expression pattern of BCAT1, a gene involved in glutamate metabolism, in the different layers of neurons has yet to be fully understood. Using single-cell data, we have identified seven different states of NSCs and found that state 4 is closely associated with the development of projection neurons. By inferring the developmental trajectory of different neuronal subtypes from NSC subsets of this state, we discovered that BCAT1 is involved in the regulation of NSC proliferation and differentiation and is specifically highly expressed in layer II/III and IV neurons. Suppression of BCAT1 through shRNA resulted in a reduction in NSC proliferation and an abnormal development of layer II/III and IV neurons. These findings provide new insights into the role of BCAT1 in the regulation of NSC behavior and neuronal development.

The identification of aging- and longevity-associated genes is important for promoting healthy aging. By analyzing a large cohort of Chinese centenarians, we previously found that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the SLC39A11 gene (also known as ZIP11) are associated with longevity in males. However, the function of the SLC39A11 protein remains unclear. Here, we found that SLC39A11 expression is significantly reduced in patients with Hutchinson–Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS). In addition, we found that zebrafish with a mutation in slc39a11 that significantly reduces its expression have an accelerated aging phenotype, including a shortened average lifespan, muscle atrophy and reduced swimming, impaired muscle regeneration, gut damage, and abnormal morphology in the reproductive system. Interestingly, these signs of premature aging were more pronounced in male zebrafish than in females. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that cellular senescence may serve as a potential mechanism for driving this slc39a11 deficiency-induced phenotype in mutant zebrafish. Moreover, immunofluorescence showed significantly increased DNA damage and reactive oxygen species signaling in slc39a11 mutant zebrafish. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), we found that manganese significantly accumulates in slc39a11 mutant zebrafish, as well as in the serum of both global Slc39a11 knockout and hepatocyte-specific Slc39a11 knockout mice, suggesting that this metal transporter regulates systemic manganese levels. Finally, using cultured human fibroblasts, we found that both knocking down SLC39A11 and exposure to high extracellular manganese increased cellular senescence. These findings provide compelling evidence that SLC39A11 serves to protect against the aging process, at least in part by regulating cellular manganese homeostasis.

Abstract Background Positive end-expiratory airway pressure (PEEP) is a potent component of management for patients receiving mechanical ventilation (MV). However, PEEP may cause the development of diaphragm remodeling, making it difficult for patients to be weaned from MV. The current study aimed to explore the role of PEEP in VIDD. Methods Eighteen adult male New Zealand rabbits were divided into three groups at random: nonventilated animals (the CON group), animals with volume-assist/control mode without/ with PEEP 8 cmH2O (the MV group/ the MV + PEEP group) for 48 h with mechanical ventilation. Ventilator parameters and diaphragm were collected during the experiment for further analysis. Results There was no difference among the three groups in arterial blood gas and the diaphragmatic excursion during the experiment. Abstract Passive immunotherapy is one of the most promising interventions for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, almost all immune-modulating strategies fail in clinical trials with unclear causes although they attenuate neuropathology and cognitive deficits in AD animal models. Here, we showed that Aβ-targeting antibodies including their lgG1 and lgG4 subtypes induced microglial engulfment of neuronal synapses by activating CR3 or FcγRIIb via the complex of Aβ, antibody, and complement. Notably, anti-Aβ antibodies without Fc fragment, or with blockage of CR3 or FcγRIIb, did not exert these adverse effects. Consistently, Aβ-targeting antibodies, but not their Fab fragments, significantly induced acute microglial synapse removal and rapidly exacerbated cognitive deficits and neuroinflammation in APP/PS1 mice post-treatment, whereas the memory impairments in mice were gradually rescued thereafter. Since the recovery rate of synapses in humans is much lower than that in mice, our findings may clarify the variances in the preclinical and clinical studies assessing AD immunotherapies. Therefore, Aβ-targeting antibodies lack of Fc fragment, or with reduced Fc effector function, may not induce microglial synaptic pruning, providing a safer and more efficient therapeutic alternative for passive immunotherapy for AD.

Abstract Neocortex expansion and folding are related to human intelligence and cognition, but the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying cortical folding remain poorly understood. Here, we report that the human gene SERPINA3 is linked to gyrification. Specifically, the overexpression of SERPINA3 induced neocortical folding, increased the abundance of neurons, and improved cognitive abilities. Further, SERPINA3 promoted proliferation of the outer radial glia (oRG, also referred to as the basal radial glia) and increased the number of upper-layer neurons. The downstream target Glo1 was determined to be involved in SERPINA3-induced gyrification. Moreover, SERPINA3 increased the proliferation of oRG by binding to the Glo1 promoter. Assessment of behavior performance showed enhanced cognitive abilities in SERPINA3 knock-in mice. Our findings will enrich the understanding of neocortical expansion and gyrification and provide insights into possible treatments for intellectual disability and lissencephaly syndrome.

Lichens exist in an organismal organization of mycobiont, photobiont, and non-photoautotrophic bacteria. These organisms contribute to the growth of lichens even in poor nutrition substrates. However, studies on the isolation and application of non-photoautotrophic bacteria in plant growth and biocontrol are scanty. Therefore, a study was conducted to isolate and evaluate the potential of non-photoautotrophic bacteria from lichen tissues in maize plant growth promotion and biocontrol of plant pathogens (fungi and bacteria). Five bacterial strains were isolated and tested for their ability to produce indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA). One bacterium named YZCUO202005 produced IAA, siderophores and biofilms, solubilized phosphate and potassium and exhibited extracellular enzymes (cellulases, proteases, amylase, and β −1,3-Glucanase). Based on the 16S rRNA sequence analysis results, YZCUO202005 was identified as Bacillus licheniformis. The strain inhibited the growth of five pathogenic fungi with an inhibition percent of between 58.7% and 71.7% and two pathogenic bacteria. Under greenhouse conditions, YZCUO202005 was tested for its abilities to enhance maize seed germination, and vegetative growth. Compared with the control treatment, the strain significantly enhanced the growth of stem length (i.e. 18 ± 0.64 cm, 78 ± 0.92 cm), leaf length (i.e. 10 ± 0.36 cm, 57 ± 1.42 cm), leaf chlorophyll levels (i.e., 13 ± 0.40, 40 ± 0.43 SPAD), and root length (i.e, 9.8 ± 2.25 cm, 22.5 ± 6.59 cm). Our results demonstrated that B. licheniformis YZCUO202005 from lichens has the potential to promote plant growth and reduce fungal and bacterial pathogens’ growth. Furthermore, the results suggest that lichens are naturally rich sources of plant growth promotion and biocontrol agents that would be used in agriculture.

Background: Glucuronidation is an essential metabolic pathway for a variety of drugs. IMM-H004 is a novel neuroprotective agent against ischemic stroke, and its glucuronide metabolite IMM-H004G exhibits similar pharmacological activity. Despite possessing a higher molecular weight and polarity, brain exposure of IMM-H004G is much higher than that of IMM-H004. This study aimed to investigate the brain metabolism and transport mechanisms of IMM-H004 and IMM-H004G. Methods: First, the possibility of IMM-H004 glucuronidation in the brain was evaluated in several human brain cell lines and rat homogenate. Subsequently, the blood–brain barrier carrier-mediated transport mechanism of IMM-H004 and IMM-H004G was studied using overexpression cell models. In addition, intracerebroventricular injection, in situ brain perfusion model, and microdialysis/microinjection techniques were performed to study the distribution profiles of IMM-H004 and IMM-H004G. Results: IMM-H004 could be metabolized to IMM-H004G in both rat brain and HEB cells mediated by UGT1A7. However, IMM-H004G could not be hydrolyzed back into IMM-H004. Furthermore, the entry and efflux of IMM-H004 in the brain were mediated by the pyrilamine-sensitive H+/OC antiporter and P-gp, respectively, while the transport of IMM-H004G from the blood to the brain was facilitated by OATP1A2 and OATP2B1. Ultimately, stronger concentration gradients and OATP-mediated uptake played a critical role in promoting greater brain exposure of IMM-H004G. Conclusions: The active glucuronide metabolite of the brain protectant IMM-H004 with poor blood–brain barrier permeability demonstrates a high partition in the rat brain via multiple mechanisms, and our findings deepen the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the blood–brain barrier metabolism and transport of active glucuronide conjugates.

Abstract Aiming at solving the trouble that digital image information is easily intercepted and tampered during transmission, we proposed a color image encryption scheme based on alternate quantum random walk and controlled Rubik’s Cube transformation. At the first, the color image is separated into three channels: channel R, channel G and channel B. Besides, a random sequence is generated by alternate quantum walk. Then the six faces of the Rubik’s Cube are decomposed and arranged in a specific order on a two-dimensional plane, and each pixel of the image is randomly mapped to the Rubik’s Cube. The whirling of the Rubik’s Cube is controlled by a random sequence to realize image scrambling and encryption. The scrambled image acquired by Rubik’s Cube whirling and the random sequence received by alternate quantum walk are bitwise-XORed to obtain a single-channel encrypted image. Finally the three-channel image is merged to acquire the final encrypted image. The decryption procedure is the reverse procedure of the encryption procedure. The key space of this scheme is theoretically infinite. After simulation experiments, the information entropy after encryption reaches 7.999, the NPCR is 99.5978%, and the UACI is 33.4317%. The encryption scheme with high robustness and security has a excellent encryption effect which is effective to resist statistical attacks, force attacks, and other differential attacks.

Magnetorheological finishing (MRF) is usually used to remove subsurface defects (SSD) of workpieces to improve the laser-induced damage threshold due to its low stress. Although MRF has been widely used to remove surface defects and SSD, the evolution and removal mechanism of surface scratches under MRF have not been fully elucidated. A systematic study is conducted on the scratch removal process and removal ability of MRF. First, an experimental study on the removal of scratches with different depths is carried out, and the effect of the scratch depth on the removal efficiency is analyzed. Second, when the scratches are removed, the processing is performed in two directions: parallel and perpendicular to the scratch. Thereby, the relationship between the scratch removal efficiency (SRE) and the processing direction is analyzed. Finally, based on the scratch removal process and mechanism, an innovative method for efficient scratch removal using a sacrificial layer is proposed. Salt stress is one of the major stress factors limiting rice productivity. Its damaging effects include water deficit due to osmotic stress, and ionic toxicity caused by ionic stress. It is very important to study the salt-tolerance mechanism of rice under salt stress, in order to improve the salt-tolerance capacity of rice and thereby increase the yield. In this experiment, the low field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF NMR) technique and the traditional dry-weight weighing method, the non-invasive micro-test technique (NMT) and the inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) were applied to analyze the distribution of water and the flow of K+ and Na+ of rice seeds during germination under NaCl stress. The results suggested that for all different NaCl concentrations, as germination hours grew, the amplitude of NMR signals of the bound water that of the free water and the total amplitude all increased gradually. And the higher the NaCl concentration is, the weaker the increase trend is. In addition, the moisture content of the seeds and the total amplitude of NMR signals were positively correlated. The regression equation was y=191.53x +1463.6, the correlation coefficient was R=0.9823, and the determination coefficient was R² =0.9650. By this regression equation, the moisture content of each state of water during seed germination can be calculated. When without NaCl stress, the rice seeds absorbed K+ in the germination process. However, when under NaCl stress at different concentrations, K+ efflux was detected. The contents of K+ and K+ /Na+ were lower than that under the control condition. The higher NaCl concentration is, the lower the K+ and K+ /Na+ contents are. These results are in consistence with the K+ and Na+ contents detected by the inductively coupled technique. These empirical data offer a reference for the study of rice-seeds’ response mechanism under salt stress during germination and the screening of germplasm resources, and also put forward a new method of biopsy micro-nondestructive test for plants under stress. Abstract Aims and objectives Acute-on-chronic hepatitis B liver failure (ACHBLF) is a critical clinical syndrome with a high short-term mortality evolved from chronic hepatitis B (CHB)-related liver disease. Prediction of mortality risk and early intervention can improve the prognosis of patients. This study aimed to develop and validate the nomogram for short-time mortality estimation in ACHBLF patients defined according to Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL). Methods A study of 105 ACHBLF patients with 90-day follow up was performed to develop the nomogram. Patients were randomly assigned to derivation cohort (n = 75) and validation cohort (n = 35) according to 7:3. Concordance index (C-index), calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the nomogram. We also compared the nomogram with APASL ACLF research consortium (AARC) score, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score, MELD with serum sodium (MELD-Na) score and albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score. The nomogram was validated using an external cohort including 40 patients. Results The 28-day and 90-day mortality of 105 patients were respectively 49.52% and 55.24%. Albumin (ALB), international normalized ratio (INR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were independent predictors for 28-day mortality; INR and eGFR were independent predictors for 90-day mortality. C-index of Nomogram-1 for 28-day mortality and Nomogram-2 for 90-day mortality were respectively 0.82 and 0.81. Calibration curve and Hosmer–Lemeshow test (Nomogram-1, 0.323; Nomogram-2, 0.231) showed optimal agreement between observed and predicted death. Areas under receiver operator characteristic curve(AUROC) of Nomogram-1(0.772) and Nomogram-2(0.771) were larger compared with AARC, MELD, MELD-Na and ALBI score. The results were well estimated in the external validation cohort. Conclusions This study highlighted the predictive value of eGFR, and the nomogram based on INR and eGFR could effectively estimate individualized risk for short-term mortality of ACHBLF patients defined according to APASL.

Abstract Ghrelin contributes to the communication between the brain and gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Both decreased ghrelin levels and functional GI disorders are early events in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and animal models. However, the reason is not clear. Here it is found that choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)‐positive neurons in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMV), are lost in PD transgenic mice. In response to the selective damaging of DMV neurons with mu p75‐SAP, a rapid reduction both in plasma total and active ghrelin levels is observed. While by contrast, chemogenetic activation of DMV cholinergic neurons can increase the plasma ghrelin levels. Impairment of cholinergic neurons is accompanied by GI disorders, including decreased stool wet weight, stool dry weight, small intestine advancing rate, and gastric emptying rate, while exogenous ghrelin treatment can partially ameliorate GI dysfunction of A53T α‐synuclein transgenic mice. Using pseudorabies virus retrograde trace method, the existence of a direct pathway from the stomach fundus to the DMV is shown. Taken together, the findings suggest that the reduction in plasma ghrelin levels in the early stages of PD may be the result of the lesion of cholinergic neurons in the DMV, thus linking neurodegeneration and GI dysfunction in PD.

Abstract Background Previous studies have shown that a certain proportion of the population did not seek medical treatment after coughing, and understanding the potential reasons is crucial for disease prevention and control. Method A population-based study was conducted with the probability proportional to population size sampling in Yiwu, Zhejiang, China. A total of 5855 individuals aged ≥15 years lived in Yiwu for more than 6 months were included. All participants completed a laptop-based questionnaire to collect detailed information by a face-to-face interview. Characteristics of individuals were described by categories of health seeking behavior using frequency and percentage. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate the associations of social-demographic and cough characteristics with health seeking behavior. Results 19.3% (1129/5855) of participants had a cough in the past month, 40% (452/1129) had sought medical treatment. Of these, 26.5% (120/452) chose hospitals at county level or above. Individuals aged ≥65 years old (OR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.23, 4.12), female (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.21, 2.06), living in rural areas (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.003, 1.69), persistent cough for 3–8 weeks (OR = 2.91, 95% CI: 1.72, 4.92) and with more accompanying symptoms (P trend 8 weeks were not (p > 0.5). Female (OR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.21, 0.54) and people living in rural areas (OR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.36, 0.92) were less likely to choose hospitals at county level or above while the higher educated were more likely to (OR = 3.29, 95% CI: 1.35, 8.02). Those who coughed for more than 2 weeks were more likely to choose hospitals at or above the county level. But the number of accompanying symptoms does not show any significant relationship with the choice of medical facility. Conclusion The present study found that age, sex, living areas and features of cough were associated with health seeking behavior. It is worth noting that those who coughed for too long (e.g. > 8 weeks) were less likely to seek medical treatment. Targeted measures should be developed based on the key factors found in this study to guide persons to seek medical treatment more scientifically.

Abstract During mammalian cortical development, neural stem/progenitor cells (NSCs) gradually alter their characteristics, and the timing of generation of neurons and glial cells is strictly regulated by internal and external factors. However, whether the blood vessels located near NSCs affect the neurogenic‐to‐gliogenic transition remain unknown. Here, it is demonstrated that endothelial uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) deletion reduces blood vessel diameter and affects the transition timing of neurogenesis and gliogenesis. Deletion of endothelial UCP2 results in a persistent increase in astrocyte production at the postnatal stage. Mechanistically, the endothelial UCP2/ROS/ERK1/2 pathway increases chymase‐1 expression to enhance angiotensin II (AngII) secretion outside the brain endothelium. The endotheliocyte‐driven AngII‐gp130‐JAK‐STAT pathway also regulates gliogenesis initiation. Moreover, endothelial UCP2 knockdown decreases human neural precursor cell (hNPC) differentiation into neurons and accelerates hNPC differentiation into astrocytes. Altogether, this work provides mechanistic insights into how endothelial UCP2 regulates the neurogenic‐to‐gliogenic fate switch in the developing neocortex.

PurposeThis study examined the methodological quality of radiomics to predict the effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). We performed a meta-analysis of radiomics studies evaluating the bias risk and treatment response estimation.MethodsOur study was conducted through a literature review as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We included radiomics-related papers, published prior to January 31, 2022, in our analysis to examine the effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in NPC. The methodological quality was assessed using the radiomics quality score. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was employed to evaluate inter-reader reproducibility. The pooled area under the curve (AUC), pooled sensitivity, and pooled specificity were used to assess the ability of radiomics to predict response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in NPC. Lastly, the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies technique was used to analyze the bias risk.ResultsA total of 12 studies were eligible for our systematic review, and 6 papers were included in our meta-analysis. The radiomics quality score was set from 7 to 21 (maximum score: 36). There was satisfactory ICC (ICC = 0.987, 95% CI: 0.957–0.996). The pooled sensitivity and specificity were 0.88 (95% CI: 0.71–0.95) and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.68–0.91), respectively. The overall AUC was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.88–0.93).ConclusionPrediction response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in NPC using machine learning and radiomics is beneficial in improving standardization and methodological quality before applying it to clinical practice.
