Exsolution, nanoparticle precipitation from oxide materials during reduction, offers a promising approach to heterogeneous catalysis. Here, authors examine the switching behavior between high and low activity and correlate the electro-catalytic activity to exsolved phases from complex oxides.

The reactive metal-support interaction in the Cu-In2O3 system and its implications on the CO2 selectivity in methanol steam reforming (MSR) have been assessed using nanosized Cu particles on a powdered cubic In2O3 support. Reduction in hydrogen at 300 °C resulted in the formation of metallic Cu particles on In2O3. This system already represents a highly CO2-selective MSR catalyst with ~93% selectivity, but only 56% methanol conversion and a maximum H2 formation rate of 1.3 µmol gCu−1 s−1. After reduction at 400 °C, the system enters an In2O3-supported intermetallic compound state with Cu2In as the majority phase. Cu2In exhibits markedly different self-activating properties at equally pronounced CO2 selectivities between 92% and 94%. A methanol conversion improvement from roughly 64% to 84% accompanied by an increase in the maximum hydrogen formation rate from 1.8 to 3.8 µmol gCu−1 s−1 has been observed from the first to the fourth consecutive runs. The presented results directly show the prospective properties of a new class of Cu-based intermetallic materials, beneficially combining the MSR properties of the catalyst’s constituents Cu and In2O3. In essence, the results also open up the pathway to in-depth development of potentially CO2-selective bulk intermetallic Cu-In compounds with well-defined stoichiometry in MSR.

The structurally different domains of a polycrystalline material may exhibit differing catalytic properties. Here, the authors directly visualize this phenomenon by observing the catalytic hydrogen oxidation that oscillates, simultaneously exhibiting different frequencies for structurally different rhodium domains.

The nanoanalytical high resolution TEM/STEM investigation of the intergranular grain boundary phase of anisotropic sintered and rapidly quenched heavy rare earth-free Nd-Fe-B magnet materials revealed a difference in composition for grain boundaries parallel (large Fe-content) and perpendicular (low Fe content) to the alignment direction. This behaviour vanishes in magnets with a high degree of misorientation. The numerical finite element micromagnetic simulations are based on the anisotropic compositional behaviour of GBs and show a decrease of the coercive field with an increasing thickness of the grain boundary layer. The magnetization reversal and expansion of reversed magnetic domains primarily start as Bloch domain wall at grain boundaries parallel to the c-axis and secondly as Néel domain wall perpendicular to the c-axis into the adjacent hard magnetic grains. The increasing misalignment of grains leads to the loss of the anisotropic compositional behaviour and therefore to an averaged value of the grain boundary composition. In this case the simulations show an increase of the coercive field compared to the anisotropic magnet. The calculated coercive field values of the investigated magnet samples are in the order of μ0HcJ=1.8 T–2.1 T for a mean grain boundary thickness of 4 nm, which agrees perfectly with the experimental data.

Optical absorption and photoluminescence emission properties of dehydroxylated MgO and CaO nanocrystals are discussed with respect to particle morphology and size. On MgO nanocubes with pronounced corner and edge features two emission bands at 3.4 and 3.3 eV result from the excitation of 4-coordinated surface O4C2-anions in edges at 5.4 eV and of regular oxygen-terminated corners at 4.6 eV, respectively. Morphologically ill-defined CaO particles are a factor of 5 larger, do not display regular corner features, and show only one photoluminescence emission band at 3.0 eV. The associated excitation spectrum indicates electronic excitations above the energy required to excite regular oxygen-terminated CaO corners. It is concluded that in the case of morphologically well-defined MgO nanocubes variations in the next coordination of oxygen-terminated corners can effectively be probed by photoluminescence spectroscopy and thus allows for discrimination between 3-coordinated surface O2-in regular corner sites and kinks. In the framework of the Future Circular Collider design study for a 100 TeV circular collider, 16 T superconducting bending magnets based on Nb3Sn technology are being developed. A pre-stress on the conductor during magnet assembly at room temperature (RT) is needed to counteract the Lorentz forces during operation. The superconducting properties of the brittle Nb3Sn superconductor are strain sensitive and excessive pre-stress leads to an irreversible degradation of the superconductor. In order to determine the level of acceptable pre-stress during the magnet assembly process, reacted and impregnated Nb3Sn cables were exposed to increasing transverse compressive stress up to a maximum stress level of 200 MPa at RT. After each stress cycle, the critical current of the cable specimens were characterized at 4.3 K in the FRESCA cable test station. No significant critical current degradation was observed up to 150 MPa, followed by degradation less than 4% after a nominal stress of 175 MPa. A dramatic permanent critical current degradation occurred after applying a nominal stress of 200 MPa. A comprehensive post analysis consisting of non-destructive micro-tomography followed by microscopic characterization of metallographic cable cross sections was carried out after the critical current test to reveal cracks in the Nb3Sn sub-elements of the loaded specimen. Powders of isolated and well-dispersed oxide nanocubes are promising components for photoelectronic applications that benefit from tunable optical properties, surface reactivity and the ease of realization of their controlled assembly. Here, we demonstrate that combustion of zinc and magnesium metal vapors at reduced pressures followed by subsequent vacuum annealing of the resulting nanoparticle powders yields single-crystalline ZnxMg1 [?] xO nanocubes of exceptional regular cubic shape and edge lengths below 25 nm. In line with ab initio calculations, which predict preferential Zn2 + segregation into low coordinated surface elements of the MgO nanocubes, we track the occupation of edge sites by chains of Zn2 + -O2 [?] units through their spectroscopic signatures. As a method to generate composite nanostructures with controlled spatial distribution of the chemical components, the annealing induced ion segregation can be extended to other well-dispersed metastable nanoparticles. We expect that the energy of segregation mainly depends on the site coordination number, which can promote controlled demixing within the nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
