Hydrophobic or water repellent soils slowly absorb water because of the low wett ability of the soil particles which are coated with hydrophobic organic substances. These pose significant effects on plant growth, water infiltration and retention, surface runoff and erosion. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of tension micro-infiltrometer(TMI) and the water drop penetration time (WDPT) methods in the determination of the hydrophobicity index of eighteen soils from southern Brazil. Soil samples were collected from the 0-5cm soil layer to determine particle size distribution, organic matter content, hydrophobicity index of soil aggregates and droplet penetration time of disaggregated and sieved soil samples. For the TMI method the soil samples were subjected to minor changes due to the use of macroaggregates to preserve the distribution of solid constituents in the soil. Due to the homogeneity of the soil samples the WDPT method gave smaller coefficients of variation unlike the TMI method where the soil structure is preserved. However, both methods had low coefficients of variation, and are thus effective for determining the soil hydrophobicity, especially when the log hydrophobicity index or log WDPT is >1.

Hydrophobicity can be understood as the soil water repellency or difficulty to soil wetting. This is associated with the coating of soil particles by hydrophobic organic substances and currently there are numerous reports of water repellency in forest areas of Eucalyptus and Pinus. Thus, this study aims at reviewing and listing the aspects related to the origin of hydrophobic compounds and the effects of the water dynamics in the forest environment, as well as implications in growth and development of trees in Eucalyptus and Pinus forests. It is recognized that the local vegetation and some bacteria and fungi, depending on their chemical composition, may release hydrophobic organic substances. Another risk factor is the occurrence of burnings which induce changes in organic compounds and promote soil drying. Furthermore, the particle size distribution and the soil pH may be indirectly associated with the occurrence of soil water repellency The occurrence of hydrophobicity requires special attention regarding the soil use and management, because this repellency affects the water movement on the surface and inside the soil profile. Changes in sorptivity, reduction in water infiltration, increase in runoff and occurrence of preferential flow are the main hydrological effects of this phenomenon. Due to their lower infiltration rates there is increased the surface flow and reducing the amount of water available, increasing the erosion and, consequently affecting the growth and development of plants.

Hydrophobicity is the phenomenon where the soil has reduced wettability, usually associated with coating of soil particles by hydrophobic organic substances. This study aimed to provide a description of the hydrophobicity occurrence, highlight recent discoveries about the origin of phenomenon and discuss the main hydro-physical properties and chemical processes linked to the development of hydrophobic behavior in soils. Hydrophobicity is associated with other factors such as soil moisture, presence of some fungi species, particle size, soil pH and occurrence of burnings. The causative substances may be provided by local vegetation, through deposition or decomposition. The dependence and combination of different factors that influence hydrophobicity in soils lead to a spatial and temporal variability of the phenomenon, with negative consequences in the processes of infiltration and water percolation, affecting the three-dimensional distribution and dynamics of soil moisture. Thus, the occurrence of a hydrophobic character requires special attention, especially regarding soil use and management.

No setor florestal, a técnica do cultivo mínimo tem se destacado como forma de aumentar a produtividade, garantindo a manutenção da biodiversidade e a conservação do solo. O presente estudo foi realizado na área experimental da Fundação Estadual de Pesquisa Agropecuária – Centro de Pesquisa em Florestas em Santa Maria – RS, com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito dos métodos de preparo do solo na densidade, na resistência do solo à penetração e no desenvolvimento inicial das raízes e parte aérea do Eucalyptus grandis, em um Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo Distrófico arênico com textura franco-arenosa. Foram comparados quatro manejos do solo: plantio direto, escarificado, escarificado mais grade niveladora e enxada rotativa, instalados em blocos ao acaso com três repetições. O solo sob plantio direto condicionou menor crescimento radicular e aéreo do eucalipto devido à maior resistência à penetração e densidade do solo, quando comparado aos preparos com mobilização. A análise da distribuição radicular no perfil, apesar de ser um método qualitativo, foi eficiente em demonstrar o efeito do preparo do solo para a implantação do Eucalyptus grandis. O preparo e a mobilização do solo resultaram em maior crescimento inicial de Eucalyptus grandis. Os efeitos da escarificação sobre as propriedades físicas do solo persistiram após um ano da mobilização do solo.

A agregação pode sofrer alterações permanentes ou temporárias com variações cíclicas provocadas por práticas de manejo do solo e pelo crescimento das plantas. O estudo avaliou a variação temporal e espacial da estabilidade de agregados estáveis em água e a sua relação com o conteúdo de matéria orgânica em um Argissolo em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil. Os tratamentos avaliados foram quatro sistemas de preparo do solo para implantação de povoamento de Eucalyptus grandis: plantio direto; escarificação; escarificação seguida de gradagem e enxada rotativa. Amostras de solo foram coletadas na camada de 0,00-0,05 m para a determinação da densidade, da estabilidade dos agregados estáveis em água e do teor de matéria orgânica do solo. A escarificação, escarificação seguida de gradagem e enxada rotativa resultaram em menor estabilidade estrutural de agregados estáveis em água. Os efeitos negativos do preparo do solo sobre o Argissolo de textura franco arenosa são reduzidos após 12 meses, demonstrando sua capacidade em reestabelecer a estrutura e a agregação. Os diferentes preparos do solo avaliados não foram capazes de aumentar o teor de carbono orgânico, não influenciado no estado de agregação. O crescimento inicial do eucalipto foi favorecido com a intensificação do preparo do solo.
