Average keratometry, corneal astigmatism, and maximum keratometry were 49.4 ± 5.2 diopters (D), 3.7 ± 2.1 D, and 57.3 ± 8.2 D, respectively. Patients were divided into YOUSOFT prescription and non-prescription cases, wherein the prescription rates were calculated. YOUSOFT visual acuity was compared with spectacle-corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and RGP lens-CDVA.Results: YOUSOFT was prescribed to 28 out of 42 patients (prescription rate 67%). In the YOUSOFT prescription cases, YOUSOFT-CDVA (logMAR − 0.04; 95% confidence interval [CI]: − 0.08 to 0.00) was significantly better than spectacle-CDVA (logMAR 0.23; 95% CI: 0.08 to 0.38; P < 0.0001), whereas YOUSOFT-CDVA (logMAR − 0.03; 95% CI: − 0.08 to 0.03) did not significantly differ from the RGP lens-CDVA (logMAR − 0.02; 95% CI: − 0.08 to 0.04; P = 0.856).Conclusion: YOUSOFT was effective in correcting irregular corneal astigmatism, suggesting that it is highly effective in patients with RGP lens intolerance.Keywords: rigid gas-permeable contact lens intolerance, YOUSOFT soft contact lens, visual acuity, prescription rate

Scheimpflug-based tonometer (SBT) and AS-OCT findings were evaluated preoperatively and 3 months following CXL. Parameters related to changes in SBT parameters were examined by multiple regression analysis using the stepwise method.Results: Regarding SBT parameters, significant changes were observed in the integrated area under the curve of the inverse concave radius (pre, 12.19 ± 1.95/mm; post, 11.26 ± 1.89/mm; p < 0.0001), maximum inverse radius (pre, 0.24 ± 0.04/mm; post, 0.23 ± 0.04/mm; p = 0.0053), deformation amplitude ratio max 2 mm (pre, 5.53 ± 0.81; post, 5.29 ± 0.71; p = 0.0048), and stress–strain index (pre, 0.74 ± 0.16; post, 0.84 ± 0.20; p < 0.0001), pre and post C-CXL. Regarding AS-OCT parameters, significant changes were observed in average keratometry (pre, 47.87 ± 3.61 D; post, 47.56 ± 3.29 D, p = 0.0104), steep keratometry (pre, 49.61 ± 4.01 D; post, 49.25 ± 3.59 D; p = 0.0115), maximum keratometry (pre, 55.44 ± 6.22 D; post, 54.68 ± 5.56 D; p = 0.0061), and thinnest corneal thickness (pre, 450.43 ± 41.74 μm; post, 444.00 ± 39.35 μm; p < 0.0001), pre and post C-CXL. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that when the change in the deformation amplitude (DA) ratio max (2 mm) was the dependent variable, age, change in average keratometry, and change in the thinnest corneal thickness were selected as explanatory variables. When changes in the stiffness parameter at applanation 1 and stress–strain index were the dependent variables, change in the intraocular pressure (IOP) was selected as the explanatory variable.Conclusion: Change in the SBT parameters following C-CXL could be related to the age, change in the IOP value, change in average keratometry, and thinnest corneal thickness.Keywords: keratoconus, corneal biomechanics, corneal tomography, customized corneal cross-linking

Patients and methods: Patients who underwent SMILE (34 eyes of 23 patients) or LASIK (34 eyes of 24 patients) were enrolled and matched according to preoperative manifest refractive spherical equivalents. The mean preoperative manifest refractive spherical equivalent was −4.69±0.6 and −4.67±0.64 D in the SMILE and LASIK groups, respectively. The safety, efficacy, and predictability were compared 3 months after surgery. Changes in corneal refractive power from the center to peripheral points and their maintenance ratios were analyzed and compared between the two groups. Results: In the SMILE and LASIK groups, 82.4% and 85.3% of patients, respectively, achieved 20/13 or better uncorrected distance visual acuity (p=1.00). There were no eyes that lost two or more lines of corrected distance visual acuity in either group. Abstract

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) markedly affected the way healthcare professionals approach patients with cancer worldwide, not only in terms of therapeutic decision-making but also in terms of supportive care. With the rapid appearance of signs and symptoms and the need of close re-assessment, standard management of oral mucositis has been challenged by physical distancing and limited resources due to the global crisis. Building on the clinical experience developed during the acute phase by members of the Mucositis Study Group of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer/International Society of Oral Oncology (MASCC/ISOO), the implications of COVID-19 on the prevention, assessment, and treatment of mucositis are critically reported. Inspired by the restructuring of supportive care measures in response to the pandemic, suggestions for new models of approaching acute side effects are also discussed.

Abstract

Introduction: Sleep is crucial during the developing stage of one's life and has been associated with physical activity. However, as the number of 24-hour stores such as convenience stores and supermarkets have increased, along with increased internet usage, people have developed the habit of staying up late, resulting in sleep deprivation due to disruption in the light-dark cycle. Jet lag is widely used in animal models for inducing irregular circadian rhythms. Chronic jet lagged model animals are known to develop a variety of disorders. Objective: To investigate the influences of chronic jet lag on erectile function in rats in order to elucidate the effects of irregular circadian rhythms on future sexual function. Methods: 4-week-old rats underwent randomly assigned to remain either under the control light/dark cycle (Cont group) or under chronic light/dark shift schedule to simulate the conditions of chronic jet lag (CJL group). The shift-lag protocol consisted of 8 h light/dark phase advances repeated every 3 days for 4 weeks. Erectile function was examined at 1, 2, and 4 weeks post CJL treatment. After 4 weeks of CJL treatment, the rats were returned to control light/dark cycle for 4 and 8 weeks, as CJL(4w)+Rest(4w) group and CJL(4w)+Rest(8w) group, and erectile function was examined correspondingly. Erectile function was tested using intracavernous pharmacotherapy (ICP) measurements, and endothelial function was tested through an isometric tension study. Western blot analysis was used to assess the levels of endothelial nitric oxide (eNOS) and phosphorylated eNOS (p-eNOS). Additionally, mRNA expressions of clock genes (Bmal1 and Cry 1) and growth factors (TGF-β1 and ICAM-1) were tested using real-time PCR. Results: The ICP/MAP ratio was significantly lower in the CJL group (0.35 ± 0.05) at 4 weeks than in the control group (0.66 ± 0.05) (P < 0.05). CJL group exhibited significantly lower testosterone levels, Bmal1, Cry 1, TGF-β1, and ICAM-1 expression, and p-eNOS and cGMP levels. The ICP/MAP ratio in the CJL(4w)+Rest(4w) group (0.47 ± 0.06) was lower than that in the control group (P < 0.01) whereas the ratio in the CJL(4w)+Rest(8w) group (0.81 ± 0.03) was similar to that in the control group (P > 0.05). Conclusions: In this study, chronic jet lagged (4 weeks) rats exhibited a decreased ICP/MAP ratio, reduced testosterone level, and decreased p-eNOS expression, indicating the development of erectile dysfunction (ED). Upon 8 weeks of normal light/dark shift schedule, erectile function was recovered. This study suggests that irregular circadian rhythms induced by repeated jet lag, especially in childhood, may affect the production of sex hormones and erectile function in the future. Abstract

We have studied the electronic structure of Fe-doped ZnO nanoparticles, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature, by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental and cluster-model calculation results, we find that Fe atoms are predominantly in the Fe3+ ionic state with mixture of a small amount of Fe2+ and that Fe3+ ions are dominant in the surface region of the nanoparticles. It is shown that the room temperature ferromagnetism in the Fe-doped ZnO nanoparticles primarily originated from the antiferromagnetic coupling between unequal amounts of Fe3+ ions occupying two sets of nonequivalent positions in the region of the XMCD probing depth of ∼2–3 nm. Abstract

The electronic structure of the oxide semiconductor ZnO has been investigated using soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The obtained band dispersions within the kx-ky planes reflect the symmetry of the Brillouin zone and show no surface-state-derived flat bands. Band dispersions along the kz direction have also been observed. The obtained band dispersions qualitatively agree with band-structure calculations except for the bandwidth. The observations provide experimental evidence that soft x-ray ARPES enables us to study the bulk band structure of semiconductors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In order to correlate the molecular orientation of organic thin films with charge injection barriers at organic/metal interfaces, the electronic structure and molecular orientation of vacuum sublimed thin films of α,ω-dihexylsexithiophene (DH6T) on the substrates Ag(111), highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), and tetratetracontane (TTC) precovered Ag(111) were investigated. Results from metastable atom electron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction were used to derive growth models (including molecular orientation and conformation) of DH6T on the different substrates. On Ag(111), DH6T exhibits a transition from lying molecules in the monolayer/bilayer range to almost standing upright molecules in multilayers. This is accompanied by a shift of the molecular energy levels to a lower binding energy by 0.65 eV with respect to the vacuum level. The unit cell of standing DH6T on lying DH6T on Ag(111) is estimated to be similar to the DH6T bulk phase. On HOPG, DH6T grows in the bulk phase with lying orientation, starting already from the monolayer coverage. DH6T on TTC precovered Ag(111) grows in an almost lying orientation and a conformation that allows a strong overlap of the hexyl chains of DH6T with the alkyl chains of TTC. In all cases, the electronic structure and, particulary, the ionization energy of DH6T is dependent on the orientation of DH6T, i.e., lying DH6T has higher ionization energy than standing DH6T.
