Context: New animal welfare legislation and ethical guidelines encourage alternative approaches for canine contraception, instead of surgical gonadectomy which is considered invasive and unjustified in healthy dogs. Aims: Reversible contraception might be achieved by inhibition of aromatase (CYP19), an enzyme catalysing the conversion of androgens to oestrogens. This study provides insights into the spatio-temporal expression and distribution of aromatase in canine ovarian tissue. Methods: Ovarian tissue was collected from 39 healthy and sexually mature bitches during different stages of the oestrous cycle: pro-oestrus (n = 8), oestrus (n = 12), dioestrus (n = 9) (luteal phase) and anoestrus (n = 10). Localisation of cytochrome P450 aromatase was determined by immunohistochemistry. Key results: Aromatase activity in the dog is high during pro-oestrus, ovulation and early dioestrus. Comparing types of follicles and corpora lutea, the highest aromatase abundance was found in antral follicles and luteinising follicles, whereas corpora lutea and early antral follicles showed an intermediate presence of the enzyme. Interesting was the high abundance of aromatase in luteinising theca interna cells, prevailing over granulosa cells. Conclusions and implications: Understanding of cells involved in oestradiol production is important for targeted inhibition of oestradiol synthesis, possibly offering an approach for contraception and suppression of oestrus. In clinical practice, contraception in female dogs is traditionally achieved by surgical gonadectomy. As this method is discouraged by new animal welfare legislation in some parts of the world and is also related to several side effects, alternative possibilities for contraception are needed. Here, we report the distribution of aromatase in the canine ovary during different stages of the oestrous cycle. The aim of the study, the first of its kind in Poland, was to identify the most important needs of patients with MS and their significant others (SO). Methods: A questionnaire developed from focus groups consisting of 20 needs-related statements was administered in seven MS centers to 573 MS patients and 220 SO. The mean age of the patients was 42.61 years old; the mean MS duration was 9.43 years. The respondents were asked to rate the needs statements according to their importance on an 11-point scale. The questionnaire was similar for the MS patients and their SO. Results: The most important needs in the patient group were: to feel needed and efficient in life; to have easy access to professional rehabilitation; and to be sure that doctors are interested in my condition. The three most important needs in the SO group were: to know that relatives/friends feel needed and efficient in life; to have good living conditions; and to be sure that doctors are interested in my relative’s/friend’s condition. The vibrational dynamics of single molecular ions confined in a coulomb crystal are followed by 4 fs ultraviolet pulses. Theoretical calculations predicted the optimal laser parameters for a successful experiment under background free conditions. The ions are subject to internal heating, which has to be treated in the theory and handled in the experiment. Beyond the experiment the pump-probe scheme is extended by a coherent control scheme designed to suppress unwanted vibrational heating.

We present a new dynamic continuum ansatz to describe the frictional force exerted on moving wave packets in a solvent cage. The solvent interferes on the femtosecond time scale, but decides the reaction outcome.

It has been possible to demonstrate that the average moment of permalloy (Ni0.8Fe0.2) is rapidly quenched by Ta substitutional additions. The energy separation between the Ni and Ta levels in the spin down channel is smaller than for the spin up channel, giving a stronger interaction between Ni and Ta in the spin down channel than in the spin up channel.

The effect of Ta and Ta/Cu seed layers, and Ta and Cu cap layers on the effective magnetic thickness of ultrathin permalloy (Ni(sub 81)Fe(sub 19)) was investigated for magnetic random access memory (MRAM) applications. Experimentally, it was shown that the tantalum rather than the copper interfaces are primarily responsible for the magnetically dead layers.

Multiple species of Phlebotominae are vectors of Leishmania (Protozoa: Trypanosomatidae), which causes visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). To describe the Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) related to the environments of black and gold howler monkeys Alouatta caraya (Humbodlt, 1812) (Primates: Atelidae), potential vectors were sampled in different landscapes and vertical strata of sleeping trees. Phlebotomine captured between December 2011 and March 2012 (2365 individuals) belonged to eight species, of which Nyssomyia neivai (Pinto, 1926) (61.4%) and Migonemyia migonei (França, 1920) (18.73%) were the most abundant, and Ny. withmani was recorded for the first time in the Chaco province. In the 'peri‐domestic' landscape, the phlebotomine were mainly captured in henhouses (78.7%), whereas the tree canopy in 'rural' and 'wild' landscapes yielded 31.2% and 29.1% of the phlebotomine, respectively. A significant association between the type of landscape and the species of phlebotomine was observed by multivariate analysis. Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) and Mg. migonei were associated with 'peri‐domestic' landscape, and Ny. neivai was associated with the 'wild' landscape. The results of this prospective study suggest that the interaction between phlebotomine and A. caraya could be a key factor with respect to understanding the epidemiology of leishmaniasis. Follicle maturation and acquisition of developmental competence by the oocyte require an interplay between granulosa cells and the oocyte, involving Growth Differentiation Factor 9 (GDF9) and Bone Morphogenetic Protein 15 (BMP15) mediated modulation of follicular steroidogenesis. In the horse, dynamic intrafollicular concentrations of cortisol were associated with follicle growth and oocyte maturation, suggesting a functional relationship between cortisol and oocyte-derived factors. The aim of this study was to analyze effects of cortisol on steroidogenic activity, apoptosis and proliferative capacity of equine granulosa cells, as well as the relationship with the oocyte-derived factor GDF9. For this purpose, granulosa cells were collected three times in four mares each during the breeding season by transvaginal aspiration in the absence of a dominant follicle. Cells collected on the same day were pooled and then seeded on 12-well plates to grow to 70-80% confluence before being stimulated with 100 ng/ml IGF1 for 24h, in the presence or absence of cortisol in increasing concentrations: 50, 100 and 150 ng/ml. These concentrations were previously observed in antral follicles before deviation (50 ng/ml) and after deviation (120 ng/ml). In blocking experiments, cells were preincubated with 20 uM H89 (protein kinase A inhibitor). All experiments were repeated three times. GraphPad software was used for statistical analysis with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by non-parametric multiple comparison post-hoc test.Expression of Star was similar in all groups (P>0.05), independent of cortisol concentration and was decreased (P<0.05) after preincubation with H89. Transcriptional levels of HSD3B2 were higher (P<0.001) after adding IGF1 and cortisol simultaneously, but not separately. The rise in HSD3B2 levels was independent of cortisol dose used (P>0.05). Blocking of Star with H89 increased GDF9 expression (P<0.01), both in the presence and absence of cortisol. Interestingly, addition of cortisol alone in all analyzed dosages raised BCL2 levels (P<0.05) and this effect was inhibited by H89 (P<0.05). However, there was no effect on CASP3 levels (P>0.05), regardless of treatment used. A higher proliferating capability of equine granulosa cells, as assessed by PCNA levels, was observed in response to IGF1 treatment (P<0.05), but only in the presence of 150 ng/ml cortisol. Despite apparently elevated, the expression of Ki67 marker in response to IGF1 in the presence of cortisol proved to be not significant (P>0.05). Taken together, our results demonstrate enhanced steroidogenesis as well as reduced apoptosis in equine granulosa cells in response to cortisol. Moreover, reduced steroidogenic activity (i.e. decreased expression of genes involved in progesterone synthesis) of granulosa cells increased GDF9 expression, which has previously been shown to be detrimental for the acquisition of developmental competence by the oocyte. The Airborne Compact Atmospheric Mapper (ACAM), an ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared spectrometer, has been flown on board the NASA UC-12 aircraft during the Deriving Information on Surface Conditions from Column and Vertically Resolved Observations Relevant to Air Quality (DISCOVER-AQ) campaigns to provide remote sensing observations of tropospheric and boundary-layer pollutants from its radiance measurements. To assure the tracegas retrieval from ACAM measurements we perform detailed characterization and verification of ACAM slit functions. The wavelengths and slit functions of ACAM measurements are characterized for the air-quality channel (~304–500 nm) through cross-correlation with a high-resolution solar irradiance reference spectrum after necessarily accounting for atmospheric gas absorption and the ring effect in the calibration process. The derived slit functions, assuming a hybrid combination of asymmetric Gaussian and top-hat slit functions, agree very well with the laboratory-measured slit functions. Comparisons of trace-gas retrievals between using derived and measured slit functions demonstrate that the crosscorrelation technique can be reliably used to characterize slit functions for trace-gas retrievals. Oxytocin (OT) plays an important role as an inducer of uterine contractility, acting together with its receptor (OTR) to increase synthesis of prostaglandins. Although OT is commonly used in the treatment for dystocia and uterine inertia in the bitch, little attention has been paid to the role of OT in mechanisms regulating parturition in the dog, so that knowledge about the expression of OTR in the canine uterus and placenta is sparse. Consequently, the expression and cellular localization of OTR were investigated in canine utero/placental compartments and interplacental sites throughout pregnancy and at normal and antigestagen-induced parturition, by real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, western blot and in situ hybridization. The utero/placental and interplacental expression of OTR was constant from pre-implantation until mid-gestation, with a significant increase observed at prepartum luteolysis. In antigestagen- treated mid-pregnant dogs, OTR was upregulated in both interplacental and utero/placental samples. Besides clear myometrial signals, cellular localization of OTR was evident in the endometrial surface epithelial, stromal and vascular endothelial cells. Weaker signals were observed in superficial and deep uterine glandular epithelial cells. Placental OTR was localized in maternal decidual cells and capillary pericytes. Finally, OTR was colocalized with the progesterone receptor (PGR) in maternal decidual cells, coinciding with previously reported increased availability of prostaglandins in the foetal part of the placenta during normal and induced parturition. The identification and confirmation of bona fide Archean-Paleoproterozoic microfossils can prove to be a challenging task, further compounded by diagenetic and metamorphic histories. While structures of likely biological origin are not uncommon in Precambrian rocks, the search for early fossil life has been disproportionately focused on lesser thermally altered rocks, typically greenschist or lower-grade metamorphism. Recently, however, an increasing number of inferred micro- and macrofossils have been reported from higher-grade metasediments, prompting us to experimentally test and quantify the preservability of organic-walled microfossils over varying durations of controlled heating and under two differing redox conditions. Because of their relatively low-intensity natural thermal alteration, acritarchs from the Mesoproterozoic Ruyang Group were chosen as subjects for experimental heating at approximately 500°C, with durations ranging from 1 to 250 days and in both oxic (normal present day conditions) and anoxic conditions. Upon extraction, the opacity, reflectivity, color, microchemistry, and microstructures of the heated acritarchs were characterized using optic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results differ for acritarchs prepared under oxic vs. anoxic conditions, with the anoxic replicates surviving experimental heating longer and retaining biological morphologies better, despite an increasing degree of carbonization with continuous heating. Conversely, the oxic replicates show aggressive degradation. In conjunction with fossils from high-grade metasediments, our data illustrate the preservational potential of organic-walled microfossils subjected to metamorphism in reducing conditions, offer insights into the search for microfossils in metasediments, and help to elucidate the influence of time on the carbonization/graphitization processes during thermal alteration. In this paper, a numerical dynamic-thermodynamic sea-ice model for the Baltic Sea is used to analyze the variability of ice conditions in three winter seasons. The modelling results are validated with station (water temperature) and satellite data (ice concentration) as well as by qualitative comparisons with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute ice charts. Analysis of the results addresses two major questions. One concerns effects of meteorological forcing on the spatio-temporal distribution of ice concentration in the Baltic. Patterns of correlations between air temperature, wind speed, and ice-covered area are demonstrated to be different in larger, more open sub-basins (e.g., the Bothnian Sea) than in the smaller ones (e.g., the Bothnian Bay). Whereas the correlations with the air temperature are positive in both cases, the influence of wind is pronounced only in large basins, leading to increase/decrease of areas with small/large ice concentrations, respectively. The other question concerns the role of ice dynamics in the evolution of the ice cover. By means of simulations with the dynamic model turned on and off, the ice dynamics is shown to play a crucial role in interactions between the ice and the upper layers of the water column, especially during periods with highly varying wind speeds and directions. In particular, due to the fragmentation of the ice cover and the modified surface fluxes, the ice dynamics influences the rate of change of the total ice volume, in some cases by as much as 1 km³ per day. As opposed to most other numerical studies on the sea-ice in the Baltic Sea, this work concentrates on the short-term variability of the ice cover and its response to the synoptic-scale forcing. Dead-live faunal comparisons can offer powerful data to detect natural or human-induced population changes in the late Holocene. Here, we document dead-live comparisons for death assemblages of the brachiopod Bouchardia rosea in nearshore (0-45 m) environments along the northern coast of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The sampling programme included 30 stations (14 at Ubatuba, 16 at Picinguaba bay). The bottom was sampled via Van Veen grab sampler, and also dredged. Out of 30 stations, 22 yielded brachiopods. The fidelity estimates were obtained by direct comparisons of live biota with dead shells. A total of 6627 brachiopods were recovered, 5339 (80.6%) from Ubatuba and 1288 (19.4%) from Picinguaba. Out of these, 6621 (99.9%) were empty, dead shells, while only six individuals (0.1%) were found alive, all in the Picinguaba Bay. These results suggest extremely poor dead-live compositional fidelity for B. rosea assemblages. The spatial data suggest that the distribution of B. rosea accumulations has been highly patchy in the region, whereas the great scarcity of live brachiopods may point to a recent decline in local populations. Several lines of evidences indicate that changes in water temperature, nutrient availability, population history and even pollution, may have all affected spatio-temporal dynamics of B. rosea populations. Contents Oestrogens are essential for male fertility targeting the testicular-epididymal compartment. However, the underlying mechanisms are only vaguely known and species specificities must be considered. The boar has a remarkably high testicular-oestrogen output, with the biologically inactive oestrone-sulphate being the major oestrogen occurring in the testicular vein. In the boar testis and epididymis, activity of steroid sulphatase (StS) and oestrogen sulphotransferase has been demonstrated. Thus apart from their synthesis in Leydig cells, provision of biologically active free oestrone seems also to depend on the activity and localization of these enzymes. Our aim was to establish expression patterns and activity of StS in boar testis. Testes were randomly collected from healthy boars and allotted to five age groups, five animals in each, aged 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 days. Three extra boars aged over 250 days were castrated to obtain fresh tissue for enzyme activity tests. Immunohistochemistry detected StS only in the cytoplasm of Leydig cells and – except for day-50 group in which 65.1 ± 4.9% (X ± SD) of the cells were positive – expression was constant with virtually all the cells staining positive. RT-PCR and in situ hybridization confirmed expression and localization of StS mRNA. The Vmax and Km value (X ± SD) for StS was 24.05 ± 0.3 fmol/s/μg protein and 2.15 ± 0.12 μm. These data suggest that StS within the Leydig cells of the boar is involved in modulation of testicular oestrogen bioavailability and that the site of sulpho-conjugation is not the testis but a different compartment of the testes–epididymidis complex. Cloud-point and spinodal curves of the system methylcyclohexane (MCH)/polystyrene (PS) are calculated with the aid of the Sako–Wu–Prausnitz equation of state (SWP-EOS). To describe the molecular-weight polydispersity of the polymer influencing the phase equilibrium and the stability, continuous thermodynamics is applied. The system MCH/PS is particularly interesting. In a certain temperature region its pressure–concentration diagram shows both a curve with a lower critical point (LCP) and a curve with an upper critical point (UCP). Lowering the temperature both curves become closer and merge, finally, forming a hour-glass shaped two-phase region. For several years this behaviour has been well known from experimental data concerning a nearly monodisperse PS sample. Firstly, we prove the SWP-EOS to be able to describe these data. Secondly, by computer simulations we investigate the transition of the UCP/LCP curves into the hour-glass shaped curves for the polydisperse case never studied before. This transition is demonstrated to be quite different from that of solutions of monodisperse PS samples in MCH. Thirdly, we apply the SWP-EOS to a real system consisting of MCH and a PS sample with a broad molecular weight distribution and, compare the results with the experimental findings. The role of mesocarnivores in wildlife communities tends to be overlooked, which has led to a large gap in natural history knowledge. In northeastern Argentina, two mesocarnivore foxes, Cerdocyon thous and Lycalopex gymnocercus, live in sympatry in noncompetitive coexistence. Their feeding habits have been studied in many occasions; however, the studies related to trophic variability in a wider spatial scale remain scarce. In this study, we aimed to analyze how the diet of these foxes varies in three protected areas in Argentina: the Mburucuyá National Park (MNP), the “San Nicolás Portal” (SN), and the Natural Reserve Rincón de Santa María (RSM). We collected fecal samples in each area, identified them using thin layer chromatography at species level, and classified the found feeding items to obtained two parameters: occurrence and relative frequency. Furthermore, we compared the diet of the two species in each site and between sites using chi‐square and estimated trophic niche breadth and overlap between the species. We found that both species consumed different food categories, with variable frequencies across study sites. We observed that in each area, the foxes differed in diet composition. However, we found no differences between the diet compositions of C. thous and L. gymnocercus, showing high niche overlap in each site. Here, we show the plasticity of both fox species in changing their diets even with small geographical variation. Both species can coexist even with a high diet overlap, possibly explained by their noncompetitive coexistence which may occur due to the current changes in the ecosystem interactions, or partitioning may exist but on a smaller niche level. Using the AIDS risk reduction model as a conceptual framework, we conducted a multivariate prospective test of psychosocial antecedents of unprotected sex by 155 female and 134 male heterosexual injection drug users. For both women and men, stronger intentions to use condoms predicted subsequent reductions in unprotected sex. For women, but not men, higher perceived self-efficacy also led to reductions in unprotected sex. These results suggest that explicit formation of risk-reduction intentions is an important antecedent to sexual behavior change by drug users of either gender and that change by drug-using women is also influenced by their perceived control over sexual risk-taking. This paper describes the monitoring and managing of tire pressure. The cheap micro controller working in conjunction with existing wireless transmitters and tire pressure monitoring devices for motor vehicle applications is designed. The main goal is to develop a working unit capable of detecting pressure in multiple tires and adjustment of pressure in the tires to the appropriate predefined values. The controller that interfaces with the tire receiver to correctly capture and manipulate the data and the pressure management capability is also discussed. The "transportation recall enhancement, accountability and documentation" (TREAD) act requires automakers to gradually provide tire pressure monitoring solutions for all motor vehicles.
