Introduction: The human plasma glycoproteome holds enormous potential to identify personalized biomarkers for diagnostics. Glycoproteomics has matured into a technology for plasma N-glycoproteome analysis but further evolution towards clinical applications depends on the clinical validity and understanding of protein- and site-specific glycosylation changes in disease. Objectives: Here, we exploited the uniqueness of a patient cohort of genetic defects in well-defined glycosylation pathways to assess the clinical applicability of plasma N-glycoproteomics. Methods: Comparative glycoproteomics was performed of blood plasma from 40 controls and 74 patients with 13 different genetic diseases that impact the protein N-glycosylation pathway. Baseline glycosylation in healthy individuals was compared to reference glycome and intact transferrin protein mass spectrometry data. Use of glycoproteomics data for biomarker discovery and sample stratification was evaluated by multivariate chemometrics and supervised machine learning. Clinical relevance of site-specific glycosylation changes were evaluated in the context of genetic defects that lead to distinct accumulation or loss of specific glycans. Integrated analysis of site-specific glycoproteome changes in disease was performed using chord diagrams and correlated with intact transferrin protein mass spectrometry data. Results: Glycoproteomics identified 191 unique glycoforms from 58 unique peptide sequences of 34 plasma glycoproteins that span over 3 magnitudes of abundance in plasma. Chemometrics identified high-specificity biomarker signatures for each of the individual genetic defects with better stratification performance than the current diagnostic standard method. Bioinformatic analyses revealed site-specific glycosylation differences that could be explained by underlying glycobiology and protein-intrinsic factors. Conclusion: Our work illustrates the strong potential of plasma glycoproteomics to significantly increase specificity of glycoprotein biomarkers with direct insights in site-specific glycosylation changes to better understand the glycobiological mechanisms underlying human disease.

We present a simulation tool that utilizes advanced modeling techniques to quantify the customer-relevant features of different battery electric vehicles (BEV) concepts. By incorporating comprehensive longitudinal and lateral dynamics analyses, the tool provides an in-depth understanding of passenger vehicle concepts in various driving conditions. Furthermore, the tool emphasizes evaluating comfort, presenting a holistic view concluding into the overall driving experience. Metrics considering the vehicle’s packaging are employed to assess the comfort aspects of the concepts. Implementing this simulation tool achieves a more systematic and reliable approach to evaluating BEV concepts. The application based on the parameters of 18 state-of-the-art BEV proved its compliance in the presented categories with the results of physical tests performed by reputable magazines with great experience and comprehensice test protocols. Its academic foundation ensures the utilization of state-of-the-art methodologies and the integration of the latest research findings in vehicle dynamics and comfort. This simulation tool offers automotive engineers, researchers, and industry stakeholders a valuable resource for objectively assessing and benchmarking the performance and comfort aspects of BEV concepts. With its ability to provide accurate evaluations and reasoning for weaknesses, this tool has the potential to significantly contribute to the advancement and optimization of future electric vehicle designs by assessing concepts in early development stages before physical prototypes are available, allowing for cost-efficient modifications.

Objective Frequency voiding charts are commonly used to gain better insight into the voiding and drinking behaviours of patients with voiding symptoms. Non-compliance when filling out a chart is known to be high. The use of a digital application might increase adherence, but little research has been conducted on this topic. The aim of this study is to compare the quality (number of correctly filled out charts) and quantity (number of complete charts) of digital versus paper frequency voiding charts among children and their parents. Methods A multi-centre parallel randomised controlled trial was conducted. Participants were assigned either a 48-h digital frequency voiding chart or a 48-h paper frequency voiding chart. Completion rates were scored based on a predefined scoring method and transcribed into a percentage. Secondary objectives included user friendliness, feasibility, degree of the child's participation, and attractiveness. Trail registry data: NTR NL9383. Results Ninety-seven patients were randomised to either a digital ( N = 53) or paper ( N = 44) frequency voiding chart. No significant difference in complete and accurately filled out frequency voiding charts was seen between the groups, with 35% ( N = 18) for digital and 50% ( N = 22) for paper, p = 0.12. Abstract Windows serve the purpose of connecting room inhabitants with the outside environment, playing an important role in sustaining human health and well‐being. Windows also have a large impact on the lighting, heating, and cooling costs of indoor spaces. In this review, we discuss research over the past 5 years on “smart” windows based on organic materials designed to absorb, reflect, or otherwise utilize excess infrared radiation. In doing so, comfortable indoor temperatures can be managed throughout the year while maintaining as much as possible transparency to visible light, so additional energy is not required for artificial illumination. We discuss both static and dynamic infrared control windows, comparing some of their features and close with a discussion of where the field may be moving to allow these windows to make a commercial impact and reduce the need of heating and/or cooling systems for our indoor spaces.

The COVID-19 pandemic provides a salient backdrop to consider what many experts across public health, conservation, and biology have long highlighted: that land use change, environmental degradation, habitat loss, and climate change contribute to outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases. Drawing on literature from across a range of disciplines, we present a conceptual model that shows how human-environment interactions and decisions by citizens, industry, and governments can drive disease emergence and spread. We suggest that local consumer and producer decisions at one location can have ramifications that extend around the world and lead to land use changes in other jurisdictions which could amplify or reduce the likelihood of novel disease outbreaks. Moving beyond the immediate health impacts and changes to healthcare systems, we propose that the long-term legacy of COVID-19 could be one that turns global society toward more socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable ways of production, consumption and landscape management through five “Key Policy Interventions.”

Photochromic smart windows have drawn increasing attention as an approach to improve building energy efficiency and enhance indoor daylight comfort. However, existing photochromic smart windows still block sunlight from entering the room on sunny winter days, causing additional energy consumption for heating. Herein, a dual‐mode smart window is designed with decoupled photo and thermal functions by combining colorless Fe‐doped WO3 photochromic film with window rotation. Based on this, selective heating and cooling of the room between winter and summer is achieved while maintaining the daylight comfort benefits during all seasons. As a proof of concept, the smart window reduces the temperature of a model house by up to 7.9 °C in summer mode, while in winter mode the temperature is only reduced by 0.7 °C. The proposed seasonally adaptive dual‐mode smart window obtains by window rotation overcomes the limitations of conventional photochromic smart windows, which not only achieves better energy efficiency but also retains improved daylight comfort. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the heat absorbed by the smart window can be harnessed to produce electricity through the integration of thermoelectric modules within the glazing, which enhances its impact on reducing energy consumption. The type of glazing implemented in a building plays an important role in the heat management of a building. Solar heat entering through glazing causes overheating of interior spaces and increases building’s cooling load. In this work, the energy saving potential of window films based on Cholesteric Liquid Crystals (CLC) is explored. This emerging technology allows for the fabrication of static and thermochromic solar heat rejecting window films and can provide a simple renovation solution towards energy efficient buildings. Simulations on a model office showed that static CLC-based window films can save up to 29% on a building’s annual energy use in warm climates. In climates with distinct summer and winter seasons, static solar heat rejecting windows films cause an additional heating demand during winters, which reduces the annual energy savings. In these climates, the benefit of thermochromic CLC-based window films becomes evident and an annual energy saving up to 22% can be achieved.

Greenhouse gas emissions from Western Australia’s sheep flock account for 26% of the state’s agricultural emissions, principally as a result of enteric methane emissions. A decrease in emissions between 2005 and 2019 can be partly explained by a 44% drop in sheep numbers over that period, but less is known about potential changes in the methane intensity of sheepmeat and wool kg CO2 equivalents/kg product. Using the livestock systems modelling software GrassGro™, we assessed the changes in methane intensity of sheepmeat and wool produced in two major sheep-producing regions in Western Australia. We also evaluated a series of future scenarios. Our results demonstrate that the observed emissions reductions are largely a result of a decrease in flock size, although methane intensity has also decreased somewhat by 11.1%. Simulation of future trajectories indicates that methane intensity could be as much as 18.8% lower by 2030, compared to 2005, with further reductions of up to 42% considered possible. The primary driver of the decreased methane intensity to date is increased flock reproductive performance through increased marking rates, higher rates of ewe lamb mating, and lower ewe death rates. However, despite reductions in methane intensity per kg of product, net emissions per ewe have risen 11.6% since 2005 and are forecast to rise by up to 21.8% by 2030, with potential further increases of up to 61% considered possible. This is driven by increased feed intake due to an increased number of lambs produced per ewe, higher ewe standard reference weights, and lower ewe death rates. Therefore, achieving absolute net reductions in the methane emissions through productivity improvements is unlikely to be prospective. Reducing net emissions is instead likely to be contingent on a reduction in flock numbers, breakthroughs in anti-methanogenic research, or via emissions offsetting. Our approach can be applied in other major livestock producing regions to evaluate emissions performance, with potential implications for agricultural and trade policy as markets increasingly seek lower emissions product.

This article explores the level of preparedness of front office (FO) employees to recognise and react to human trafficking (HT). The information used for this research was based on relevant literature related to the subject. Also, data for this study were collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with eight respondents working for hotels (international hotel groups) in the area of Amsterdam in the FO department. The interviews were transcribed and coded for further analysis. Considering the results, the respondents suggested that a supportive company culture and open communication seemed to be related to their “freedom to act”. The HT prevention policy seems to be adequately implemented, and training is provided. Nevertheless, respondents have identified additional needs related to refresher training and its contents. Lastly, respondents stated they were unaware of the availability of a HT checklist. They have obtained knowledge of HT signs through training and feel they are, up to a certain level point, able to recognise a victim.

Child dental caries (i.e., cavities) are a major preventable health problem in most high-income countries. The aim of this study was to compare the extent of inequalities in child dental caries across four high-income countries alongside their child oral health policies. Coordinated analyses of data were conducted across four prospective population-based birth cohorts (Australia, n = 4085, born 2004; Québec, Canada, n = 1253, born 1997; Rotterdam, the Netherlands, n = 6690, born 2002; Southeast Sweden, n = 7445, born 1997), which enabled a high degree of harmonization. Risk ratios (adjusted) and slope indexes of inequality were estimated to quantify social gradients in child dental caries according to maternal education and household income. Children in the least advantaged quintile for income were at greater risk of caries, compared to the most advantaged quintile: Australia: AdjRR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.04-1.34; Québec: AdjRR = 1.69, 95%CI = 1.36-2.10; Rotterdam: AdjRR = 1.67, 95%CI = 1.36-2.04; Southeast Sweden: AdjRR = 1.37, 95%CI = 1.10-1.71). There was a higher risk of caries for children of mothers with the lowest level of education, compared to the highest: Australia: AdjRR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.01-1.38; Southeast Sweden: AdjRR = 2.31, 95%CI = 1.81-2.96; Rotterdam: AdjRR = 1.98, 95%CI = 1.71-2.30; Québec: AdjRR = 1.16, 95%CI = 0.98-1.37. The extent of inequalities varied in line with jurisdictional policies for provision of child oral health services and preventive public health measures. Clear gradients of social inequalities in child dental caries are evident in high-income countries. Policy related mechanisms may contribute to the differences in the extent of these inequalities. Lesser gradients in settings with combinations of universal dental coverage and/or fluoridation suggest these provisions may ameliorate inequalities through additional benefits for socio-economically disadvantaged groups of children.

Objective Australian research on volunteering is rich and diverse, but also increasingly fragmented. In an attempt to promote a more integrated study of volunteering, we review volunteering research conducted in Australia, using volunteering journey as a framework. Specifically, we summarise literature on volunteer characteristics, motivations, benefits, psychological contract, commitment, and withdrawal. Method A comprehensive review yielded 152 studies on volunteering conducted in Australia. Results We find that volunteers have distinct characteristics, such as being older, better connected, employed, and residing in rural areas. There are a variety of reasons that prompt individuals to volunteer, and this motivation does change over time. Volunteering leads to better psychological well‐being, as well as increases in social and human capital. Volunteer expectations and commitment are key drivers of ongoing volunteering. Finally, stress, work–family conflict, and negative interactions with others lead to volunteer withdrawal. Conclusion A lot is known about volunteering, however, future advancement of the field will depend on better integration across disciplines and domains. Currently, volunteering is viewed as a set of distinct stages, and a more integrated approach is required. We also note a lack of theoretical and methodological rigour in many Australian studies on volunteering.

Abstract Introduction We aimed to describe clinician‐patient communication in the diagnostic process of memory clinics, specifically clinician behavior known to facilitate knowledgeable participation of patients during consultations. Methods In this multicenter, observational study, we audio‐recorded routine diagnostic consultations of 41 clinicians and 136 patients/caregivers at eight memory clinics. Patients/caregivers completed surveys after each audiotaped consultation. We used a study‐specific coding scheme to categorize communication behavior. Results Clinicians often provided information on (results of) diagnostic testing. They infrequently invited questions and/or checked understanding. Clinician behavior to involve patients in decision‐making about diagnostic testing was limited. Of note, patients/caregivers rarely expressed their information or involvement preferences. Yet, approximately, one quarter of them would have liked to receive more information. Discussion Involving patients more explicitly by means of shared decision‐making could benefit the quality of care provided in memory clinics because it enables clinicians to attune the diagnostic workup to the individual patient's needs.

The development of acceptable and achievable completion criteria is fundamental to the successful relinquishment of mined land to a post-mining use. Despite the central role of completion criteria, there is still a need to build capacity and understanding of how to set targets and develop measurable completion criteria that are accepted by all stakeholders involved. The work described in this paper aimed to elicit industry practice, barriers, and opportunities for the development of feasible and acceptable completion criteria. We developed a quantitative survey that was administered online. The target respondents consisted of mining companies, consulting businesses, and relevant regulators in Western Australia. The survey questionnaire, raw survey data, and summary statistics are provided in this paper to increase research transparency and facilitate reproducibility of the methods by researchers in other jurisdictions.

Cholesteric liquid crystal oligomers are an interesting class of temperature responsive structurally colored materials. However, the role of endcap molecules in these oligomers is rather unexplored. In this work, we demonstrate the role of endcap molecules on structural color stability and hypsochromic shift in temperature‐responsive cholesteric liquid crystal oligomers. First, new liquid crystal monoacrylate endcap molecules are synthesized, which are then used to synthesize various cholesteric liquid crystal oligomers. In addition, cholesteric oligomers using commercial monoacrylate endcap molecules are also prepared. It is found that the molecular weight and the polydispersity of the oligomers can be tuned by the endcapping molecules. The oligomers are used to produce reflective, structurally colored coatings. It was found that the coatings using the commercial monoacrylate lose their color and crystallize over time, most likely due to the presence of crystalline dimers. The coatings containing the newly synthesized monoacrylate endcap molecules did not exhibit this crystallization, resulting in structurally colored coatings that remained stable over time. These latter coatings possessed temperature responsive hypochromic behavior, which makes them interesting for advanced optical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Volunteers represent a global workforce equivalent to 61 million full‐time workers. A significant decline in volunteering has highlighted the urgency to better understand and address turnover amongst volunteers. To address this, we conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis of turnover amongst volunteers. We also examined whether staying or leaving has different predictors. The meta‐analysis integrated and synthesized 117 studies, encompassing 1104 effect sizes across 55 335 volunteer workers, to identify and quantify relationships between turnover and the broad range of variables that have been examined in the volunteer work domain. Amongst the strongest predictors of volunteer turnover were attitudinal variables, in particular, job satisfaction (ρ = −.58), affective commitment (ρ = −.58), engagement (ρ = −.54) and organizational commitment (ρ = −.54). Contextual variables that showed the largest effects included communication (ρ =.62), organizational support (ρ = −.61) and the quality of the relationship between volunteers and their leader (leader‐member exchange, ρ = −.55). We synthesize our findings into an integrative framework delineating the predictors of volunteer turnover. In doing so, we extend turnover research to consider non‐remunerated work contexts and provide a basis for developing turnover theory that is responsive to the unique experience of volunteers. Abstract Background Chronic homelessness is a problem characterised by longstanding inability to attain or maintain secure accommodation. Longitudinal research with homeless populations is challenging, and randomised controlled trials that evaluate the effectiveness of intensive, case management interventions aimed at improving housing and health-related outcomes for chronically homelessness people are scant. More research is needed to inform programmatic design and policy frameworks in this area. This study protocol details an evaluation of the Journey to Social Inclusion – Phase 2 program, an intervention designed to reduce homelessness and improve outcomes in chronically homeless adults. Methods/design J2SI Phase 2 is a three-year, mixed methods, multi-site, RCT that enrolled 186 participants aged 25 to 50 years between 07 January 2016 and 30 September 2016 in Melbourne. The intervention group (n = 90 recruited) receives the J2SI Phase 2 program, a trauma-informed intervention that integrates intensive case management and service coordination; transition to housing and support to sustain tenancy; and support to build social connections, obtain employment and foster independence. The comparison group (n = 96 recruited) receives standard service provision. Prior to randomisation, participants completed a baseline survey. Follow-up surveys will be completed every six months for three years (six in total). In addition to self-report data on history of homelessness and housing, physical and mental health, substance use, quality of life, social connectedness and public service utilisation, linked administrative data on participants’ public services utilisation (e.g., hospitalisation, justice system) will be obtained for the three-year period pre- and post-randomisation. Semi-structured, qualitative interviews will be conducted with a randomly selected subset of participants and service providers at three time-points to explore changes in key outcome variables and to examine individual experiences with the intervention and standard service provision. An economic evaluation of the intervention and associated costs will also be undertaken. Discussion Results of this trial will provide robust evidence on the effectiveness of J2SI Phase 2 compared to standard service provision. If the intervention demonstrates effectiveness in improving housing, health, quality-of-life, and other social outcomes, it may be considered for broader national and international dissemination to improve outcomes among chronically homeless adults. We propose that distinct leadership competencies differ in their development over time. Extending the integrative model of leader development (Day et al., 2009), we further propose that leader identity will form complex relationships with leadership competencies over time. To test these propositions, we use longitudinal data (i.e., 5 months, four measurement points) of the 80 in total high-potential executives in a corporate leadership development program. We find a significant difference in the initial levels and the changes of eight distinct leadership competencies. We also find that leader identity relates to the development of certain – but not all – leadership competencies. Finally, we demonstrate the importance of developing leadership competencies by linking them to career advancement (i.e., job promotion). These findings are discussed in light of their theoretical and practical implications.
