Abstract

Groundwater flow beneath the oceans plays an important role for cooling the earth’s crust and geochemical cycles, yet it remains an understudied subject in hydrogeology. This contribution focuses on the circulation of seawater through basalt covered by deep-sea sediments in the equatorial northeast Pacific Ocean. Numerical model simulations are used to infer the factors controlling the flow patterns that develop between basalt outcrops. The energy to drive the flow is derived from the crustal heat flux. It is found that the sediment thickness plays a key role in determining the development of hydrothermal siphons, i.e. the flow between two adjacent seamounts where one acts as a recharge point and the other as a discharge point for seawater. Amongst the various factors tested, the outcrop width was an important factor as well.

Abstract

We discuss, from a theoretical point of view, the four wave mixing spectroscopy on an ensemble of p-doped quantum dots in a magnetic field slightly tilted from the in-plane configuration. We describe the system evolution in the density matrix formalism. In the limit of coherent ultrafast optical driving, we obtain analytical formulas for the single system dynamics and for the response of an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble. The results are compared to the previously studied time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy on the same system. We show that the Kerr rotation and four wave mixing spectra yield complementary information on the spin dynamics (precession and damping)., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, conference NOEKS10

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to survey properties of Gaussian approximation numbers. We state the basic relations between these numbers and other s-numbers as, e.g., entropy, approximation, or Kolmogorov numbers. Furthermore, we fill a gap and prove new two-sided estimates in the case of operators with values in a K-convex Banach space. In the final section, we apply relations between Gaussian and other s-numbers to the d-dimensional integration operator defined on [L.sub.2][[0,1].sup.d]. 17. Transcranial focused ultrasound for the treatment of tremor: A preliminary case series.

Abstract

Essential tremor (ET) can be debilitating. Treatments for ET include beta-blockers and surgical interventions. Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) may offer an office-based non-invasive alternative. This pilot open label clinical trial explores safety, feasibility, and potential efficacy of LIFU in treatment of ET. We report outcomes from the first 10 participants in this IRB-approved trial of LIFU for treatment of ET. The ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (Vim) was targeted using structural and functional MRI. Participants underwent eight 10-min sessions of LIFU targeting the contralateral (Vim) to the most affected hand. Safety was closely monitored; Global Rating of Change (GRC) and The Essential Tremor Rating Scale (TETRAS) scores were collected. No adverse effects were reported. Eight participants reported a GRC ≥2. TETRAS performance subscale demonstrated clinically significant improvement in all participants. Preliminary findings support LIFU's safety and feasibility. The potential efficacy encourages additional sham-controlled studies. • Patients with Essential Tremor received eight, 10-minute LIFU treatments to the ventral intermediate thalamus. • 8/10 patients reported significant improvement in tremor symptoms, with GRC score > 2 immediately post-treatment. • Analysis of TETRAS scores demonstrated significantly decreased tremor severity for all patients following eight treatments. • LIFU may represent an intermediate treatment for Essential Tremor prior to more invasive treatments. Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to quantify body weight changes in German adult populations during the past decades. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Longitudinal analysis of seven cohort studies covering different age ranges between 18 and 83 years. Baseline examinations were between 1994 and 2007 and follow-up durations between 4.0 and 11.9 years. For each study, mean change in body weight per year and 10-year change in body mass index (BMI) classification were analyzed. For the middle age group of 45-64 years, meta-analysis was conducted to obtain an overall estimate for Germany. RESULTS: Among men weight gain was highest in the youngest participants and decreased with advancing age. Among women weight gain was on a stable high level among those younger than 45 years and decreased at older age. Within 10 years, 30-40% of middle-aged participants with normal baseline weight became pre-obese or obese and 20-25% of those with pre-obesity at baseline became obese, whereas >80% of persons who were obese at baseline remained obese over time. The estimated average weight change in adults aged 45-64 years was 0.25 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18-0.33) kg/year among men and 0.24 (0.17-0.30) kg/year among women. CONCLUSIONS: We could observe a moderate weight gain over the past years in German middle-aged populations of 0.25 kg/year. Obesity prevention needs to be targeted to specific subgroups in the population, especially to younger adults, who seem to be most vulnerable for gaining weight. Obesity intervention needs to be improved, as the majority of obese adults remained obese over time.
