Abstract The garfish Belone belone represents the only valid endemic Belone species for the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It shows a wide global distribution range, with a high commercial value and ecological relevance in the pelagic domain. Despite this, there needs to be more knowledge regarding the otoliths of this species, with the total absence of descriptions regarding asterisci and lapilli from Mediterranean populations and a lack of studies on the reliability of shape analysis on its sagittae. The present paper aims to provide the first main contours description of the three otoliths pairs from a Mediterranean population, providing an accurate investigation of morphology, morphometry, and intra-specific variability of sagittae, lapilli, and asterisci. Results showed (i) the absence of directional bilateral asymmetry and sexual asymmetry for the three otoliths pairs, (ii) a different morphology and morphometry of sagittae, lapilli and asterisci than those described in the literature, and (iii) an enhanced variability between sagittae morphometry and shape between the three investigated size classes. All these data confirmed the reliability of the studied species of shape analysis, showing a geographical and size-related variability of otoliths features probably related to genetics, environmental conditions, and life habits variations.

We present initial rock magnetic results for both lava flows and lapilli produced by the 2021 eruption of the Cumbre Vieja, La Palma (Canary Islands). Samples were taken during the eruption to minimize early alteration and weathering of the rocks and tephra. Standard procedures included progressive alternating field and thermal demagnetization, hysteresis curves, thermomagnetic experiments, progressive acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), and First-Order Reversal Curves (FORCs). Overall, our observations, including low to medium unblocking temperatures, isothermal remanent magnetization to 1 Tesla, and the abundance of wasp-waist hysteresis loops, strongly suggest the presence of Ti-rich titanomagnetites as the main remanence carriers in both lava flows and lapilli, in addition to some hematite as well. Whereas the former has been directly seen (SEM), hematite is elusive with nonmagnetic-based methods. In this study, laboratory reared Cirrhinus molitorella from hatching through to the juvenile stage were used to validate daily increment deposition. Lapilli were suitable for ageing C. molitorella. The slope of the linear relationships between increment counts and age was not significantly different from 1 ( n = 258, P > 0·05), indicating that growth increments are deposited daily. The first increment following the first-feeding check formed 3 days post hatch (dph). One hundred and twenty-three juveniles, ranging from 36·4 to 84·7 mm in body length ( LB), were collected in the Pear River estuary from July to January in both 2014 and 2015 and used to estimate growth rate. The core in the lapillus, consisting of a single primordium, a diffuse area and the first-feeding band, was followed by 20 narrow and poorly contrasted daily increments. Thereafter, increments were wide and well-defined, and, finally became less distinct, but still homogenous after c. 53 dph. The mean increment width increased to the 29th increment and stayed relatively constant up to the 35th increment and then, gradually declined to the edge of the otolith. Wild juveniles were aged from 69 to 178 dph and hatched from the 15 February to 2 September. Growth rate was estimated from the adjusted linear regression of LB on age: LB = 4·37 + 0·44 A ( r2 = 0·60), where A = age. The radius of the core and the regularity and resolution of the increments showed some differences between reared and wild fish. Livestock effluents are a beneficial nutrient supply for crops, whereby their use is critical to ensure the sustainability of the farms global management. However, they can cause serious ecological problems if misused, polluting soils and groundwater. Combining "soft technology" and local materials is a low cost solution in terms of finance and energy. The REAGUA project (REuso AGUA, Water reuse in Spanish) analyzes the possibility of using "picon" (lapilli) as a material for the treatment of liquid manure from ruminants, for later use in subsurface drip irrigation system to produce forage and biofuels, in which the soil acts as a subsequent advanced treatment. A three-phase system, in which the effluent was poured with a vertical subsurface flow in an unsaturated medium, is designed. In order to determine the management conditions that optimize the filter, it was necessary to characterize the hydraulic behavior of lapilli and its ability to remove substances. Using three lapilli-filled columns, unsaturated flux, and a ruminant effluent, the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand after 5 days (BOD5) and ammonia, phosphorus and suspension solids (SS) obtained was over 80%, 90%, and 95% respectively, assumable values for irrigation. This study compares sectioned and whole lapillus and asterisci otoliths as suitable structures for ageing tigerfish, Hydrocynus vittatus. Fifty tigerfish were collected from the Pongolapoort Dam, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Growth zone counts on sectioned lapilli showed the greatest percentage agreement (52%) and highest precision (APE = 4.77%, CV = 6.20%). Growth zone counts were symmetrically distributed between structures (Bowker's tests P > 0.125). Between-reader analysis also showed sectioned lapilli to have the highest percentage agreement (68%) and best precision (APE = 5.55%, CV = 7.85%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The performance of two substrates commonly available in the zone, gravel and lapilli, was tested for their use in hybrid constructed wetland pilot plants for the treatment and reuse of urban wastewater in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. The first stage of the systems was a vertical subsurface-flow constructed wetland and the second stage was a horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetland. Parallel experiments were carried out with one system containing only crushed stone basaltic gravel as substrate and the other with only lapilli, a very porous volcanic sediment. The comparative effect of substrate type, hydraulic loading rate and planting was studied. Tracer studies indicated that the experimental TRHs were significantly lower than the theoretical ones, particularly for the vertical flow with gravel. Though the vertical flow with lapilli performed better than the one with gravel, the hybrids showed quite similar removals. Planting or varying the hydraulic loading rate introduced little differences between the vertical flows or the hybrids. Average removals for the gravel-based hybrid constructed wetland were 86% for BOD, 80% for COD, 88% for ammonia-N, 96% for SS and turbidity, 24% for phosphate-P, and 99.5% for faecal coliforms and 99.7% for faecal enterococci. Thus, it can be concluded that hybrid constructed wetlands proved to be robust configurations for wastewater treatment in the Canary Islands. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The early life history of the black anglerfish, Lophius budegassa was investigated by otolith (lapilli) increment analysis. Samples of demersal juvenile L. budegassa ranging from 54 to 196mm total length were collected during bottom trawl surveys in the central Adriatic Sea. By counting increments presumed to be deposited daily in the lapillar otoliths, 88 specimens of L. budegassa were successfully aged. Age estimates of juveniles ranged between 79 and 204 days, indicating that probably the pelagic phase of this species is relatively short and settlement occurs at less than 3 months of life. The analysis of check marks in the core area of lapilli enabled us to determine the period of endogenous feeding, which would last between 15 and 24 days after hatching. Back-calculated hatching dates and, consequently, the spawning season of L. budegassa in the Adriatic Sea was spread over a long period, lasting at least from February to June. The length at age relationship gave an estimate of mean growth rate of approximately 0.8–1.02mm/day, indicating a faster growth rate of 0+ juveniles L. budegassa than previously thought. The implications of these findings on age estimates discrepancies between previous ageing studies on L. budegassa carried out using different calcified structure (sagittae or illicia) are discussed. Abstract: A traditional mulching technique used in Lanzarote, Canary Islands, allows dry farming as well as pronounced water savings in irrigation. It is known to reduce evaporational losses, but is also supposed to enhance the nocturnal condensation of water vapour from the atmosphere. The mulch layer consists of porous volcanic rock fragments abundantly available on the island. The mulched surface is believed to cool rapidly and to be more hygroscopic than a bare soil surface. This was investigated during a field experiment conducted over 68 nights during different seasons in 2001 and 2002, as well as some simple laboratory measurements. It was found that nocturnal condensation on the mulch surface (max 0.33 mm) was lower than on the bare soil surface (max 0.57 mm) or any one of three alternative mulch substrates. However, a slightly stronger nocturnal cooling of the mulched as compared to the bare surface was present. It is shown that these contrary findings can be explained by the higher hygroscopicity of the dry loam soil, resulting in condensation gains beyond the strict definition of dew. Differences in plant-availability of non-hygroscopic dew water and hygroscopic water uptakes are discussed, and conditions under which mulching would show positive condensation effects are defined. This includes a theoretical section demonstrating that non-hygroscopic mulch layers of a proper thickness can provide small amounts of dew to plant roots at the mulch–soil interface. Abstract: Explosive volcanic eruptions, potentially involving large amounts of magmatic and entrained water, are thought to have been very important in the Noachian and Hesperian periods earlier in Mars history, and basaltic plinian eruptions are likely to have occurred throughout martian history. Previous treatments of explosive volcanic plumes on Mars have simply extrapolated plume models for the Earth''s atmosphere to Mars. Taking account of known limitations to the applicability of this approach, which suggest that convective plumes may be capable of reaching only ∼20 km height on Mars, we introduce the concept of inertial plumes, capable of carrying clasts to much greater heights and dropping them into the lower atmosphere over a wide area. Atmospheric circulation patterns guarantee wide dispersal and thick deposits of tephra resulting from both types of eruption. The presence of large amounts of water in convecting explosive eruption plumes can also lead to condensation of water on small particles and the consequent accretion of other particles as the smaller particles fall through the plume, producing accretionary lapilli. Formation of accretionary lapilli significantly alters the spatial distribution and grain sizes of pyroclastic fall deposits from those involving discrete juvenile clasts with negligible clast interactions. We model the eruption and dispersal of tephra, and the formation of accretionary lapilli on Mars under current atmospheric conditions and explore the consequences of this for the geometry and grain size of deposits formed from explosive eruption plumes. We show that explosive eruptions can produce thick widespread deposits of ash and lapilli similar to those thought to have produced mantling deposits in several regions of Mars. We develop a detailed example that shows that local hydrovolcanic explosive eruptions and solely magmatic eruptions originating from the nearby Apollinaris Patera could have emplaced tephra and accretionary lapilli in the Columbia Hills region of the Mars Exploration Rover Gusev site. If the atmospheric pressure was higher early in Mars'' history than now, eruptions would have led to somewhat more extensive pyroclast dispersal than under current conditions. Abstract: Kamafugitic rocks intruded the Precambrian basement and Phanerozoic sediments at the northeast border of the Paraná basin as part of the Late Cretaceous Goiás alkaline province (GAP). Plutonic complexes dominate the north of the province, whereas lavas and pyroclastic rocks prevail in the south. The central GAP is characterized by kamafugitic diatremes, which may crop out continuously for up to 850m and consist of a central breccia body, surrounded and overlain by lava flows and crosscut by dykes. The breccias contain some special spheroidal juvenile fragments—namely, accretionary and armored lapilli, frozen droplets, spinning droplets, and wrapped fragments—whose textural and mineralogical aspects are described in detail. Irregularly shaped tuff pockets that occur within the breccias contain textures and structures similar to those of subaerial surge deposits and formed in confined, high gas to solid+liquid ratio domains in the conduit. Diatreme emplacement affected the country rock through thermal metamorphism, development of columnar jointing, and formation of peperite-like mixtures. There is no evidence of phreatomagmatic activity in the diatremes, and CO2, rather than H2O, seems to have been the major volatile component of the kamafugitic magmas. This finding implies that features such as accretionary lapilli and peperites are not exclusively associated with H2O-dominated processes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The use of otolith elemental composition as a natural tag has emerged as a powerful tool for managing and understanding the ecology of marine fish populations. The approach remains relatively untested in fresh waters, so we examined its utility for reconstructing habitat use and wetland nursery origin in Lake Superior. We analyzed the otolith margin of adult yellow perch, Perca flavescens, as an indicator of recently occupied habitat, and the juvenile region of the otolith core as an indicator of nursery area. To characterize elemental fingerprints, all otolith samples were analyzed for Ca and 13 minor and trace elements using mass spectrometry. We found differences in the otolith concentrations of several elements between yellow perch inhabiting coastal wetlands and those inhabiting the adjacent nearshore waters of Chequamegon Bay. The most striking difference was the high concentration of Sr in the sagittal margins of wetland-caught fish relative to those captured in the bay. Based on differences in otolith Sr concentrations alone, fish from bay and wetland habitats could be distinguished with 100% accuracy. We also found that elemental fingerprints derived from otolith cores of adult yellow perch were similar among fish captured from wetlands adjacent to Chequamegon Bay but quite distinct for one site outside of the bay, suggesting these fish came from a separate population from those in Chequamegon Bay. Overall, these results encourage us that elemental fingerprinting techniques will be useful for estimating the relative importance of different coastal wetland habitats to wetland-dependent species in the Great Lakes. A brown paleosol developed on mafic lava and overlain by lapilli (Campanas profile, northern part of the Fogo Island, Cape Verde archipelago) was studied. The detailed iron speciation obtained by Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization confirmed that oxidation is a major chemical paleoweathering mechanism, as it still is in present day soils of these semi-arid islands. The thermal effects on the paleo-surficial due to the overlying lapilli deposit do not appear to have been significant since only an increase of the Fe3+ oxide particles size is observed. Nevertheless no biological remains could be found in this brown paleosol, which may be mainly attributed to the paleoenvironmental conditions and/or to low atmospheric inputs/eolian transport from continental Africa. Maghemite is the predominant Fe oxide in the profile. Magnetite slightly oxidized is still present in all samples of the profile. No positive correlation was found between Cr and As distribution and nano-sized oxides: Cr is gradually depleted upwards following the gradual weathering increase of the silicates, and there is no trend in the As content variation along the profile. This may be related to the fact that nano-sized maghemite and magnetite do not adsorb Cr and As as readily as nano-sized hematite, which could only be detected in trace amounts. In these oxidative weathering conditions, Cr may be significantly lost from mafic lavas, mobilized and transported as dissolved and/or particulate matter in rivers and groundwater. In the first weathering stages a significant increase of the mafic index of alteration for oxidizing environments (MIA (O)) and an increase of the Fe3+ in oxide contents occur; in the upper levels of the profile, MIA (O) does not vary significantly, but Fe oxidation within the silicates structure increases. The combination of MIA (O) and the Fe oxidation degree, particularly the Fe3+/(total Fe) fraction in silicates, appears to be a good approach for an accurate evaluation of the alteration/weathering degree of paleoweathered mafic lava in semi-arid and oxidizing environment. Abstract To complement the series of manuscripts published as "Atlas of Teleostei Otoliths of the Southeastern-Southern Brazil", in this volume we present results for species of Siluriformes (two species) and Pleuronectiformes (thirteen species) orders. Considering that the sagittae of Siluriformes are very small we analyzed the left lapillus. Due to the asymmetry of the Pleuronectiformes otoliths, were analysed both left and right structures, being the circumsulcal depression the most important feature to diagnose these species.
