Purpose: This paper aims to investigate potential impact of internal carbon pricing in emission reduction in Higher education institutions (HEIs). Over the past century, human activities have increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the atmosphere. If GHG emissions continue their upward trend, this will disturb the natural balance and trigger abrupt changes in all components of the climate system. Limiting climate change would require a substantial and sustained reduction in GHG emissions from all sectors. HEIs, as major emitters, indeed need to respond to the demand to become more sustainable by making practical changes to the way their institution is run. Design/methodology/approach: Using emission data associated with campus waste, this study describes how HEIs can take the lead on emission reduction through the implementation of carbon pricing. Findings: Specifically, this study estimates the cost of emissions from campus waste to illustrate the primary benefits of internal carbon pricing for scaling up campus carbon neutrality initiatives and describes practical implications for enhancing sustainable waste management in a university setting. This study will contribute to identifying the potential for emissions reduction through waste management using a carbon pricing mechanism in university settings. Originality/value: While carbon pricing has long been regarded as an alternative approach to tackling carbon pollution, it has not been thoroughly explored with regard to waste management.

Li‐ and Mn‐rich layered oxides (LMROs) are recognized as promising cathode materials for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high specific capacity and cost efficiency. However, LMROs encounter challenges such as manganese dissolution in electrolytes and the release of oxygen gas from irreversible oxygen redox reactions, leading to structural degradation and voltage decay that reduce energy density. Consequently, recent research has shifted toward employing LMROs in all‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs), where Mn dissolution is negligible. Herein, nanostructured LMROs demonstrate superior electrochemical compatibility with sulfide‐based solid electrolytes in ASSBs compared to conventional LIBs. Nanostructured LMRO exhibits outstanding capacity retention (97.1% after 1300 cycles at 30 °C) with significantly suppressed voltage decay. Furthermore, the initial electrochemical activation of Li2MnO3 domains within LMRO is explored in terms of the mechano‐electrochemical interactions in the composite cathode. At elevated temperatures, interfacial degradation accelerates due to the chemical oxidation of Li6PS5Cl solid electrolytes, driven by oxygen released from LMRO. To address this, LMRO surfaces are modified with thioglycolic acid through esterification, suppressing interfacial degradation of Li6PS5Cl and ensuring stable capacity retention over 500 cycles at 60 °C. Motivation: Food security is a multidimensional issue, crucially underpinned by cultural acceptability, which significantly affects emotional well‐being and social integration. This study was motivated by the persistent challenge faced by refugee and immigrant communities in accessing culturally appropriate food, a critical aspect often overlooked by food assistance programmes. This gap both hinders nutritional intake and impedes the emotional and social well‐being of these vulnerable populations. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the alignment between the cultural dietary preferences of refugee and immigrant communities in Syracuse, New York, and the offerings of local food aid programmes, specifically focusing on culturally appropriate fresh produce. It sought to understand the extent to which food assistance meets the cultural needs of these communities, thereby informing potential improvements in food security practices and policy. Approach and Methods: Using a mixed‐methods approach, the study collected quantitative and qualitative data. Surveys were conducted with 35 refugee and immigrant women to quantitatively assess the availability and suitability of culturally specific food items within local food bank programmes. In addition, qualitative insights were derived through focus group discussions with eight of these participants. This dual‐method approach allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of both perceived and actual gaps in service provision. Findings: The findings highlighted a significant gap between the fresh produce provided by the food assistance programmes and the cultural dietary needs of the participants. Although these programmes provide essential nutrition, they often neglect to accommodate the cultural preferences of diverse communities. This emphasizes the urgent need for food aid initiatives to integrate cultural preferences, enhancing the acceptability of food aid and supporting the psychological adjustment of refugees and immigrants to new environments. Policy Implications: This study underscored the need for policy‐makers and food assistance programmes to prioritize cultural appropriateness alongside nutritional adequacy. It recommended the adoption of more inclusive food distribution practices that recognize and respect the cultural diversity of beneficiaries. Such practices are crucial, not only for improving the nutritional and psychological outcomes of refugees and immigrants but also for fostering their integration and participation in the community. Only a few studies have investigated how college students who have limited exposure to other cultures (i.e., no traveling experiences, little cross-cultural social interaction) understand and define culture. The current study was intended to capture college students' voices about culture. Three focus groups were conducted with undergraduate college students on issues related to culture. The findings were organized based on the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity. These findings suggest that college students generally lack a deep understanding of their own cultures, as well as other cultures. The findings of this study provide guidance for the development of more effective strategies to increase cultural competency in college students.

Listening skills are essential to interpersonal relationships and successful work in teams. Despite its necessity, most communication curriculum in higher education does not target students' listening skills. This study examines the impact of infusing an Active Empathetic Listening (AEL) module into a large, introductory university communication course. One hundred and seventy-two students (n = 172) from four courses (fall 2018-spring 2020) completed a self-reported questionnaire measuring AEL at three time points across the semester. Results showed that the module made statistically significant differences within all three AEL subscales of sensing, processing, and responding. Results suggest that long-term exposure to the active listening curriculum are required to make behavioral pattern changes to their listening habits. Researchers conclude with recommendations for communication educators, shedding light on how AEL skills can be developed among college students.

Although all‐solid‐state batteries are suggested as a means to tackle the safety concerns associated with current Li‐ion batteries, there is presently a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding their thermal safety. In this context, critical factors contributing to the thermal runaway of thiophosphate solid electrolytes with charged Li1‐xNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM) under thermal and mechanical abuse conditions are demonstrated, considering parameters such as heating rate under thermal abuse conditions and the hybridization of S atom in structure. In particular, the thermal behavior of various solid electrolytes, including thiophosphates, thioantimonates, and halides, is investigated to clarify critical elements in Li6PS5Cl (LPSCl) contributing to its thermal instability when combined with charged NCM. Various ex situ analyses, along with density functional theory calculations, reveal a correlation between the hybridization of S atoms and the thermal instability of solid electrolytes, suggesting that sulfur acts as a key element triggering the thermal runaway of sulfide‐based solid electrolytes. Spectral discrimination by animal visions such as human, bird, and butterfly is numerically compared by angular analysis of photo‐response (PR) which will be recorded at photo‐receptors. Hyperspectral imaging system is utilized to simulate various animal vision. Bird vision is acute to discriminate colors among different vegetables due to its evenly spaced and narrow spectral responsivity of photo‐receptors compared to that of human. Butterfly vision is excellent in discriminating red tomato ripening due to the exclusive photo‐receptors detecting only over 600 nm. Even real and fake fruits in the same perceived color for human is discriminated by bird vision. Artificial vision with finely resolved polychromatic artificial cone cells are demonstrated surpassing human vision using visible multispectral camera. We propose a homogenization scheme for metamaterials that utilizes causality to determine their effective parameters. By requiring the Kramers-Kronig causality condition in the homogenization of metamaterials, we show that the effective parameters can be chosen uniquely, in contrast to the conventional parameter retrieval method which has unavoidable phase ambiguity arising from the multivalued logarithm function. We demonstrate that the effective thickness of metamaterials can also be determined to a specific value by saturating the minimum-error condition for the causality restriction. Our causal homogenization provides a robust and accurate characterization method for metamaterials.

In 2018, the OECD Development Assistance Committee (DAC) created a new policy marker for disaster risk reduction (DRR) to help member states to monitor and report the progress made on the mainstreaming of DRR into their development activities. Drawing on this DRR marker, this study found that DAC members' DRR mainstreaming remains in the incipient stage, with a significant gap between rhetoric and action. Important areas for improvement include a more comprehensive understanding of disaster risk; increased funding for activities principally targeting DRR, larger scale projects; enhanced financial stability without compromising other development objectives; and further integration of DRR and climate change adaption into development projects. Dietary fiber intake and physical fitness are independently associated with high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels. Nevertheless, the association between dietary fiber intake, measures of physical fitness, and hs-CRP levels has not yet been fully evaluated. We investigated the influence of a combination of dietary fiber intake and measures of physical fitness, including hand grip strength, resistance training, and metabolic equivalents of tasks, on hs-CRP levels. Data collected from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) spanning 2015 to 2018 were used in this study. A total of 16,934 participants (7434 men and 9500 women aged ≥19 years) were included in this study. After adjusting for confounding factors (age, education, income, marital status, smoking status, drinking habits, total energy intake, and aerobic physical activity), we employed a multivariable logistic model to examine the association of dietary fiber intake and measures of physical fitness with hs-CRP levels. Among women, the odds of high hs-CRP levels were lower in those with the highest dietary fiber intake and superior grip strength compared to in women with the lowest dietary fiber intake and weaker grip strength (odds ratio [OR] = 0.40, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.24–0.68). The highest dietary fiber intake who participated in resistance exercise at least three times per week had a reduced odds of high hs-CRP levels compared with those with the lowest dietary fiber intake who did not engage in resistance exercise in both men and women (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.32–0.89; OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.19–0.84, respectively). Our findings indicate that dietary fiber intake and high levels of physical fitness were associated with reduced odds of elevated hs-CRP levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
