In the contemporary context, pest detection is progressively moving toward automation and intelligence. However, current pest detection algorithms still face challenges, such as lower accuracy and slower operation speed in detecting small objects. To address this issue, this study presents a crop pest target detection algorithm, GLU-YOLOv8, designed for complex scenes based on an enhanced version of You Only Look Once version 8 (YOLOv8). The algorithm introduces the SCYLLA-IOU (SIOU) loss function, which enhances the model generalization to various pest sizes and shapes by ensuring smoothness and reducing oscillations during training. Additionally, the algorithm incorporates the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) and Locality Sensitive Kernel (LSK) attention mechanisms to boost the pest target features. A novel Gated Linear Unit CONV (GLU-CONV) is also introduced to enhance the model’s perceptual and generalization capabilities while maintaining performance. Furthermore, GLU-YOLOv8 includes a small-object detection layer with a feature map size of 160 × 160 to extract more features of small-target pests, thereby improving detection accuracy and enabling more precise localization and identification of small-target pests. The study conducted a comparative analysis between the GLU-YOLOv8 model and other models, such as YOLOv8, Faster RCNN, and RetinaNet, to evaluate detection accuracy and precision. In the Scolytidae forestry pest dataset, GLU-YOLOv8 demonstrated an improvement of 8.2% in mAP@0.50 for small-target detection compared to the YOLOv8 model, with a resulting mAP@0.50 score of 97.4%. Specifically, on the IP102 dataset, GLU-YOLOv8 outperforms the YOLOv8 model with a 7.1% increase in mAP@0.50 and a 5% increase in mAP@0.50:0.95, reaching 58.7% for mAP@0.50. These findings highlight the significant enhancement in the accuracy and recognition rate of small-target detection achieved by GLU-YOLOv8, along with its efficient operational performance. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing small-target detection models for various pests and diseases.

Summary: Background/objective: Neoadjuvant radiotherapy plays a vital role in rectal cancer treatment, but impairs postoperative bowel function, leading to low anterior resection syndrome (LARS). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy alone might avoid the negative effect of radiotherapy on bowel function. This study aims to assess the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on LARS and the development of LARS over the first 6 months after surgery. Methods: Rectal cancer patients were prospectively recruited during June 30, 2018 and December 24, 2019. Bowel function was assessed by the LARS score, which was taken at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery via phone call interview. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether they received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (group A) or not (group B). Results: A total of 97 patients were included in the analysis. There was no significant difference between the LARS scores at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months of both groups. Previous studies have suggested that bullying may be contagious in adolescents. The present study examined whether ego depletion mediated the association between peer bullying and participant bullying and whether the mediating process was moderated by participant trait self-control. A sample of 2217 Chinese high school students (16.92 ± 0.94 years; 1068 boys and 1084 girls) were invited to fill in the questionnaires. The results reveal that after controlling for gender, grade and neuroticism, ego depletion partially mediates the positive relationship between peer bullying and participant bullying. Further, participant trait self-control moderates the relationship between peer bullying and participant bullying and that between peer bullying and participant ego depletion. That is, the strength of the contagion effect is lower in adolescents with high trait self-control compared to those with low trait self-control. In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence of the contagion of bullying in adolescents. Limitations and implications for research and practice are discussed.

Research on gender issues and mathematics education is often conducted in classroom settings and/or with teachers, students, and parents. However, perspectives about mathematics from adults beyond teachers and parents can have an impact on students. Thus, we conducted research in Australia and Canada about the general public's views of gender and mathematics. Participants (n = 405) were surveyed using a questionnaire in which all questions were worded in a non-binary manner. In this article, we focus on participants' views about gender and mathematics ability, and the importance of studying mathematics by gender. We report both overall trends and trends by demographic group (country, gender, age, and education level). The majority of participants indicated that there was no relationship between gender and mathematics ability or between gender and the importance of studying mathematics. Participants with gendered views typically felt that boys/men/males are better at mathematics and that it was more important for girls/women/females to study mathematics. Although the findings were generally encouraging, the existence of sexist, stereotyped views highlights the need for additional work to probe people's views of gender and mathematics. Our study is an example of mathematics education research conducted in a gender-inclusive way.
