Abstract The Green Revolution (GR) enhances crop yields significantly that contributes greatly to the social and economic development of many less developed countries. However, the increasing crop yields might rise crop residue biomass burning, leading to adverse environmental and health consequences. We assess the impact of crop residue burning associated with the GR-induced growing crop yields on benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) pollution, a congener of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with strong carcinogenicity. We find a significant increasing trend of BaP emission and contamination from crop residue biomass burning from the mid-1960s to 2010s in India, coinciding with the growing crop yields occurring during the GR. Our results reveal that agricultural BaP emission driven lifetime lung cancer risk (ILCR) in India increased 2.6 times from the onset of GR in the mid-1960s to 2014 and the 57% population in India was exposed to the BaP level higher than the India national standard (1 ng m−3). We show that the reduction of open crop residue burning during the rice and wheat residue burning period would be a very effective measure to reduce BaP environmental contamination and health risk.

Seepage wells that can convert surface water into groundwater are often constructed near river valleys to obtain more water and lead to smaller drawdown compared with traditional wells. Seepage wells have been widely used, whilst the groundwater and river-level variations caused by seepage wells are still unclear, and numerical models are rarely verified due to the lack of in-situ observational data, which may lead to results that are quite different from the actual conditions. To address those limitations, a large-scale pumping test was carried out near the Yellow River valley in China and a coupled seepage–pipe flow model was established using the exchange yield between the aquifer and pipe as the coupling key in this research. The coupled model was evaluated with in-situ measurement. The field observation showed that both the river and groundwater had a positive response to the pumping of the seepage wells. The simulation results indicated that our model can well estimate the pumping rate and drawdown with root-mean-square deviations of 158.235 m3/d and 0.766 m, respectively. Further, it is also found that the groundwater showed the obvious characteristics of three-dimensional flow under the influence of seepage wells and the maximum drawdown should be less than 15 m to ensure exploitation efficiency. These findings provide important information that can guide the design and construction of seepage wells to improve the rational exploitation of groundwater. Abstract Background Coronary heart disease (CHD), the leading cause of death globally, might be developed or exacerbated by air pollution, resulting high burden to patients. To date, limited studies have estimated the relations between short-term exposure to air pollution and CHD disease burden in China, with inconsistent results. Hence, we aimed to estimate the short-term impact and burden of ambient PM pollutants on hospitalizations of CHD and specific CHD. Methods PM10 and PM2.5 were measured at 82 monitoring stations in 9 cities in Sichuan Province, China during 2017-2018. Based on the time-stratified case-crossover design, the effects of short-term exposure to particle matter (PM) pollution on coronary heart disease (CHD) hospital admissions were estimated. Meanwhile, the linked burden of CHD owing to ambient PM pollution were estimated. Results A total of 104,779 CHD records were derived from 153 hospitals from these 9 cities. There were significant effects of PM pollution on hospital admissions (HAs) for CHD and specific CHD in Sichuan Province. A 10 μg/m3 increase of PM10 and PM2.5 was linked with a 0.46% (95% CI: 0.08, 0.84%), and 0.57% (95% CI: 0.05, 1.09%) increments in HAs for CHD at lag7, respectively. The health effects of air pollutants were comparable modified by age, season and gender, showing old (≥ 65 years) and in cold season being more vulnerable to the effects of ambient air pollution, while gender-specific effects is positive but not conclusive. Involving the WHO’s air quality guidelines as the reference, 1784 and 2847 total cases of HAs for CHD could be attributable to PM10 and PM2.5, separately. The total medical cost that could be attributable to exceeding PM10 and PM2.5 were 42.04 and 67.25 million CNY from 2017 to 2018, respectively. Conclusions This study suggested that the short-term exposure to air pollutants were associated with increased HAs for CHD in Sichuan Province, which could be implications for local environment improvement and policy reference.

Summary: Atmospheric emission sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in China’s eastern seaboard regions cause heavy POP contamination in the Bohai Sea (BS), China. Because many rivers are emptying into the BS, terrestrial runoff has been considered a dominant pathway of POPs onto the BS. Here, we explored the contribution of atmospheric transport and terrestrial runoff to organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) to the BS by using an atmospheric transport model and a terrestrial runoff model. We examined the sensitivity and response of OPFR in the BS seawater to its atmospheric transport, deposition, and riverine discharge via terrestrial runoff. Both terrestrial runoff and atmospheric transport model simulations reveal that the atmospheric transport and deposition, including dry, wet, and diffusive gaseous deposition, dominate OPFR input into the BS. The total OPFR fluxes entering the BS via the atmospheric pathway and riverine input were 70.4 and 2.8 t/yr in 2013, respectively.

Abstract Early intervention is essential for favorable long-term outcomes in schizophrenia. However, there is limited guidance in the scientific literature on how best to choose between dopamine D2 receptor (D2R) partial agonists and D2R antagonists in early stages of schizophrenia. The aim of this meta-analysis was to directly compare D2R partial agonists with D2R antagonists for efficacy and tolerability, using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that involved participants diagnosed with first-episode psychosis, schizophrenia, or related psychotic disorders with a duration of illness ≤5 years. Fourteen RCTs, involving 2494 patients, were included in the meta-analysis. Aripiprazole was the only identified D2R partial agonist, and was not significantly different from pooled D2R antagonists for overall symptom reduction or all-cause discontinuation. However, aripiprazole was more favorable than pooled D2R antagonists for depressive symptoms, prolactin levels, and triglyceride levels. Specifically, aripiprazole was more favorable than paliperidone for triglyceride levels and more favorable than risperidone and olanzapine, but less favorable than ziprasidone, for weight gain. In addition, aripiprazole was less favorable for akathisia compared with second-generation D2R antagonists, in particular olanzapine and quetiapine, and less favorable for discontinuation due to inefficacy than risperidone. Lastly, aripiprazole was more favorable than haloperidol for various efficacy and tolerability outcomes. In conclusion, aripiprazole’s efficacy did not differ substantially from D2R antagonists in the early course of schizophrenia, whereas differential tolerability profiles were noted. More double-blind RCTs are required comparing the efficacy and tolerability of aripiprazole as well as other D2R partial agonists with D2R antagonists in early stages of schizophrenia.

The vegetation burning caused by wildfires can release significant quantities of aerosols and toxic chemicals into the atmosphere and result in health risk. Among these emitted pollutants, Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), the most toxic congener of 16 parent PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), has received widespread concerns because of its carcinogenicity to human health. Efforts have been made to investigate the environmental and health consequences of wildfire-induced BaP emissions in Africa. Still, uncertainties remain due to knowledge and data gaps in wildfire incidences and biomass burning emissions. Based on a newly-developed BaP emission inventory, the present study assesses quantitatively the BaP environment cycling in Africa and its effects on other continents from 2001 to 2014. The new inventory reveals the increasing contribution of BaP emission from African wildfires to the global total primarily from anthropogenic sources, accounting for 48% since the 2000 s. We identify significantly higher BaP emissions and concentrations across sub-Saharan Africa, where the annual averaged BaP concentrations were as high as 5–8 ng/m3. The modeled BaP concentrations were implemented to estimate the lifetime cancer risk (LCR) from the inhalation exposure to BaP concentrations. The results reveal that the LCR values in many African countries exceeded the acceptable risk level at 1 × 10−6, some of which suffer from very high exposure risk with the LCR>1 × 10−4. We show that the African BaP emission from wildfires contributed, to some extent, BaP contamination to Europe as well as other regions, depending on source proximity and atmospheric pathways under favorable atmospheric circulation patterns.

AimLong acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics are an alternative to oral antipsychotic (OAP) treatment and may be beneficial for patients in the early stages of schizophrenia. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review on the efficacy of first-generation and second-generation LAI antipsychotics in recent-onset, first-episode, and early psychosis patients.MethodsMEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science Core databases were used to search for studies that used LAIs in early psychosis patients. Studies published up to 06 Jun 2019 were included with no language restrictions applied. Inclusion criteria were a diagnosis of schizophrenia or related disorder, where patients were in their first episode or had a duration of illness ≤5 years.Results33 studies were included: 8 RCTs, 4 post-hoc analyses, 2 case reports, and 19 naturalistic studies. The majority of studies evaluated risperidone LAIs (N = 14) and paliperidone palmitate (N = 10), while the remainder investigated fluphenazine decanoate (N = 3), flupentixol decanoate (N = 2), and aripiprazole (N = 1). Two studies did not specify the LAI formulation used, and one cohort study compared the efficacy of multiple different LAI formulations.ConclusionsWhile the majority of data is based on naturalistic studies investigating risperidone LAIs or paliperidone palmitate, LAIs may be an effective treatment for early psychosis patients in terms of adherence, relapse reduction, and symptom improvements. There is still a need to conduct more high quality RCTs that investigate the efficacy of different LAI formulations in early psychosis patients.

Anthropogenic dust (AD), as a crucial component of particulate matter, is defined as dust emitted through modifying or disturbing soil particles directly or indirectly associated with human activities in urban areas, croplands, pasturelands and dry lakes. The sources, characteristics, and impacts of AD remain poorly studied, in contrast to the large body of research on natural dust (ND). This review summarizes scientific findings published since the 1990s regarding the emissions, physical-chemical characteristics, and spatio-temporal distributions of AD from the micro to the global scale. AD accounts for 5%–60% of the global dust loading, with notable spread in existing estimates. Compared with ND, AD has more complex and variable compositions and physical-chemical properties. Influenced by human disturbances, AD exhibits small particle sizes, easily accessible critical friction velocity, and large emissions. Further research should improve the observations and simulations to investigate the complex interactions among AD, climate change, and human health.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious public health problem in China, and within China, Inner Mongolia has a high prevalence area of TB. Though studies on the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) have been reported in many provinces, there are no such studies to date in Inner Mongolia. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity of MTB in Inner Mongolia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, we analyzed 372 clinical MTB isolates with 22-loci mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit and variable-number tandem repeats (MIRU-VNTR), spoligotyping, large sequence polymorphism (LSP), and NTF region analysis to understand the TB genotypes prevalent in Inner Mongolia. We found that the Beijing family was the most prevalent genotype (85.48%, 318/372), and the "modern" sublineage accounted for 76.73% (244/318) of the isolates. Our data also showed that there was no statistically significant association between the two major nationalities and the Beijing genotype (χ(2) = 3.612, P = 0.057; P>0.05). CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: The Beijing genotype is the most prevalent family of M. tuberculosis in Inner Mongolia, and we do not find any correlation between the Beijing genotype and the major nationalities.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) is still a big threat to human health, especially in children. However, an isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis culture from pediatric cases remains a challenge. In order to provide some scientific basis for children TB control, we investigated the genotyping and drug resistance characteristics of M. tuberculosis isolates from pediatric cases in China. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this study, a total of 440 strains including 90 from children (18 years) isolated in 25 provinces across China were subjected to spoligotyping and drug susceptibility testing. As a result, Beijing family strains were shown to remain predominant in China (85.6%, 81.1% and 75.4% in three above groups, respectively), especially among new children cases (91.0% vs. 69.6% in previously treated cases, P=0.03). Dust emission refers to the spatial displacement process of soil particles with the influence of wind. The quantitative and accurate description of dust emission is the basis of dust simulation in the modeling. The previous studies always employed static land cover in the numerical models, ignoring dynamic variations in the surface bareness and leading to large uncertainties in the dust simulation. We build six sets of dynamic dust sources functions, which shows a pronounced monthly and annual variability with the influence of seasonal change. Compared that in July, the dynamic dust source in March shows an expanding pattern to the edge of the deserts. Moreover, the dust source function in the Taklimakan Desert and Gobi Desert decrease at an annual rate of 2.42 × 10-4 and 3.06 × 10-4. The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled to Chemistry (WRF-Chem) coupled with dynamic dust sources can effectively reproduce the spatiotemporal distribution of aerosol within satellite and ground-based observations. Our results show that the surface bareness and topographic characteristics jointly control the spatial distribution and value of dynamic dust sources. Further, the dynamic change of dust source further affects the dust emission and dust cycle. This study highlights the importance of surface bareness and the topographic characteristics on the dynamic dust source, and effectively improves dust cycle simulation over East Asia. Abstract Deploying static wireless sensor nodes is prone to network coverage gaps, resulting in poor network coverage. In this paper, an attempt is made to improve the network coverage by moving the locations of the nodes. A surrogate-assisted sine Phasmatodea population evolution algorithm (SASPPE) is used to evaluate the network coverage. A $$50 \times 50$$ 50 × 50 hill simulation environment was tested for the number of nodes of 30 and 40 and radii of 3, 5 and 7, respectively. The results show that the SASPPE algorithm has the highest coverage, which can be up to 23.624% higher than the PPE algorithm, and up to 5.196% higher than the PPE algorithm, ceteris paribus. The SASPPE algorithm mixes the GSAM with LSAMs, which balances the computational cost of the algorithm and the algorithm’s ability to find optimal results. The use of hierarchical clustering enhances the stable type of the LSAMs. In addition, LSAMs are easy to fall into local optimality when they are modeled with local data, and the use of sine Phasmatodea population evolution algorithm (Sine-PPE) for searching in LSAMs alleviates the time for the algorithm to fall into local optimality. On 30D, 50D, and 100D, the proposed algorithm was tested by 7 test functions. The results show that the algorithm has significant advantages on most functions.

Abstract Inspired by the dynamic wet adhesive systems in nature, various artificial adhesive surfaces have been developed but still face different challenges. Crucially, the theoretical mechanics of wet adhesives has never been sufficiently revealed. Here, we develop a novel adhesive mechanism for governing wet adhesion and investigate the biological models of honeybee arolium for reproducing the natural wet adhesive systems. Micro-nano structures of honeybee arolium and arolium-prints were observed by Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM), and the air pockets were found in the contact interface notably. Subsequently, the adhesive models with a three-phase composite interface (including air pockets, liquid secretion, and hexagonal frames of arolium), were formed to analyze the wet adhesion of honeybee arolium. The results of theoretical calculations and experiments indicated an enhanced adhesive mechanism of the honeybee by liquid self-sucking effects and air-embolism effects. Under these effects, normal and shear adhesion can be adjusted by controlling the proportion of liquid secretion and air pockets in the contact zone. Notably, the air-embolism effects contribute to the optimal coupling of smaller normal adhesion with greater shear adhesion, which is beneficial for the high stride frequency of honeybees. These works can provide a fresh perspective on the development of bio-inspired wet adhesive surfaces.

Efficient and stable heat dissipation structure is crucial for improving the convective heat transfer performance of thermal protection systems (TPSs) for hypersonic aircraft. However, the heat dissipation wall of the current TPS is limited by a single material and structure, inefficiently dissipating the large amount of accumulated heat generated during the high-speed maneuvering flight of hypersonic aircraft. Here, a convection cooling channel structure of TPS is proposed, which is an innovative multi-level structure inspired by the natural honeycomb. An active cooling channel (PCM-HC) is designed by using a variable-density topology optimization method and filled with phase change material (PCM). Numerical simulations are used to investigate the thermal performance of the PCM-HC wall, focusing on the influence of PCM properties, structural geometric parameters, and PCM types on heat transfer characteristics. The results demonstrate that the honeycomb-like convection cooling channel wall, combined with PCM latent heat of phase change, exhibits superior heat dissipation capability. With a heat flux input of 50 kW/m2, the maximum temperature on the inner wall of PCM-HC is reduced by 12 K to 20 K. Different PCMs have opposing effects on heat transfer performance due to their distinct thermophysical properties. This work can provide a theoretical basis for the design of high-efficiency cooling channel, improving the heat dissipation performance in the TPS of hypersonic aircraft.

Wind farms have been found to alter local and regional meteorology and climate. Here, we show that multiple large-scale wind farms might disturb air quality forecasts and affect PM2.5 air pollution. We explore the impact of large-scale wind farms on PM2.5 concentrations and forecasts in the Northern China Plain in winter and summer using a coupled weather forecast - atmospheric chemistry model (WRF-Chem). Modelling results reveal that the large-scale wind farms decrease PM2.5 levels within the wind farms and increase PM2.5 concentrations by 49 % and 16 % of the modelled monthly mean PM2.5 concentrations in proximate areas and regions hundreds of kilometres downstream. The wind farm-forced changes in PM2.5 are more evident in the simulated hourly PM2.5 concentrations. The model sensitivity studies reveal that hourly concentration fractions in winter induced by wind farms vary from -40 % to 250 % in nearby and distant downstream regions and metropolises, comparing with the cases without the wind farms. The impact of wind farms on modeled PM2.5 during the nighttime is stronger than that in the daytime. Our results suggested that the wind farm perturbed changes in PM2.5 should not be overlooked because such changes might affect air quality forecast on an hourly basis, particularly in heavily contaminated Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region by PM2.5 [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic adhesive systems in nature have served as inspirations for the development of intelligent adhesive surfaces. However, the mechanisms underlying the rapid controllable contact adhesion observed in biological systems have never been adequately explained. Here, the control principle for the unfolding adhesive footpads (alterable contact area) of honeybees is investigated. The footpads can passively unfold, even without neuro-muscular reflexes, in response to specific dragging activity (generating shear force) toward their bodies. This passive unfolding is attributed to the structural features of the soft footpads, which cooperate closely with shear force. Then, the hierarchical structures supported by numerous branching fibers were observed and analyzed. Experimental and theoretical findings demonstrated that shear force can decrease fibril angles with respect to the shear direction, which consequently induces the rotation of the interim contact area of the footpads and achieves their passive unfolding. Furthermore, the decrease in fibril angles can lead to an increase in the liquid pressure within the footpads, and subsequently enhance their unfolding. This study presents a novel approach for passively controlling the contact areas in adhesive systems, which can be applied to develop various bioinspired switchable adhesive surfaces.

This study extends research on the relationship between physical activity and adolescent resilience by using cross-lagged analysis. Therefore, it used the Adolescent Resilience Rating Scale and the Physical Activity Scale to conduct a one-year longitudinal follow-up survey on 818 adolescents (50.6% boys), aged 12–17. They completed the questionnaires, providing data on physical activity and adolescent resilience. The results indicated there were significant gender differences in physical activity, but there was no significant gender difference in adolescent resilience; there was a significant positive correlation between physical activity and adolescent resilience; physical activity had a significant predictive effect on adolescent resilience. This study supports the assertion that physical activity has an important impact on adolescent resilience. It further analyzes the possible reasons for this result and contemplates the theoretical and practical significance of the findings, which provides evidence for the study of adolescents’ physical and mental health and enriches the theory of resilience.

Biomachine hybrid robots have been proposed for important scenarios, such as wilderness rescue, ecological monitoring, and hazardous area surveying. The energy supply unit used to power the control backpack carried by these robots determines their future development and practical application. Current energy supply devices for control backpacks are mainly chemical batteries. To achieve self-powered devices, researchers have developed solar energy, bioenergy, biothermal energy, and biovibration energy harvesters. This review provides an overview of research in the development of chemical batteries and self-powered devices for biomachine hybrid robots. Various batteries for different biocarriers and the entry points for the design of self-powered devices are outlined in detail. Finally, an overview of the future challenges and possible directions for the development of energy supply devices used to biomachine hybrid robots is provided.

Backgroud: Ferroptosis is a form of regulated cell death in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury models. Acute kidney injury (AKI) induced by I/R injury can result in cell death, and subcellular structural changes, including expansion of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), mitochondrial shrinkage, and other morphological changes. Inositol requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1) a proximal ER stress sensor, activates c-Jun NH2-terminal kinases (JNK) in response to ER stress, which is inextricably linked to ER.Method: To determine the resulting damage and relationship between ferroptosis and the IRE1/JNK pathway in AKI, we modeled AKI in I/R renal injury mice and hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) HK-2 cells, as in vivo and in vitro experiments, respectively.Results: In I/R renal injury mice, we found that abnormal renal function; damage of renal tubular epithelial cells; activation of the IRE1/JNK pathway and ferroptosis. Our in vitro study showed a large number of reactive oxygen species and more ferroptotic mitochondria in H/R HK-2 cells. By inhibiting IRE1/JNK in I/R renal injury mice, we observed decreased blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and tissue injury, compared with the I/R group, we also found the markers of ferroptosis changed, including decreased 4-hydroxynonenal and increased glutathione peroxidase 4, as well as in H/R induced IRE1/JNK knock-down HK-2 cell lines (stable depletion). Furthermore, inhibition of ferroptosis could also attenuate the IRE1/JNK pathway in mice following I/R and HK-2 cells following H/R.Conclusion: We observed cross-talk between the IRE1/JNK pathway and ferroptosis in I/R or H/R induced AKI. Our findings suggest that ferroptosis plays an important role in I/R induced AKI, and that inhibition of the IRE1/JNK pathway can protect against I/R induced renal injury by inhibiting ferroptosis. The inhibition of the IRE1/JNK pathway could therefore be a feasible therapeutic target for treatment of AKI.

IntroductionPrenatal diagnosis of pulmonary atresia is difficult in relative, especially when the pulmonary artery is slim and hypoplastic in development. It is of great importance to search for the blood supply to the pulmonary artery in those fetuses while it challenges most screening sonographers, even fetal echocardiography specialists. We herein report a rare case of pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect, complicated with an aberrant ductus arteriosus which provides the blood supply to the pulmonary artery. Besides, the case was also accompanied by cardiac malposition, dextrocardia with situs solitus. The echocardiographic characteristics and autopsy findings are also presented to approach the skill of fetal diagnosis.Case presentationA 30-year-old primigravida woman was referred to our center at gestational age of (24 ± 3) weeks for further fetal cardiac examination for suspected fetal cardiac anomalies. Fetal echocardiography revealed dextrocardia, situs solitus of the atria, an L-ventricular loop, a ventricular septal defect, an enlarged coronary sinus, and pulmonary atresia by transverse scanning. The ductus arteriosus was not present at the three-vessel trachea view with the retrograde flow showing in the pulmonary artery trunk, which suggested the possibility of an aberrant ductus arteriosus. Sagittal and coronal scanning was attempted to find that the pulmonary artery connected with the innominate artery via the aberrant ductus arteriosus. Three-dimensional echocardiography with spatio-temporal image correlation and high-definition flow imaging technique was performed to obtain the three-dimensional rendered image, which clearly showed the malformation in space. The pregnancy was terminated and the gross findings confirmed the prenatal diagnosis.ConclusionA detailed evaluation of fetal cardiac anatomy and hemodynamics is crucial for the detection of an aberrant ductus arteriosus, which plays an important role in the diagnosis of pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect. Sagittal and coronal scanning is useful to find the course of this aberrant ductus arteriosus. The three-dimensional echocardiography with spatio-temporal image correlation technique could provide additional spatial information to show great arteries in detail, which can serve as a supplement to traditional two-dimensional modality and benefit examiners to make an accurate diagnosis.

Purpose: To report a case of a branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination. Observations: A 34-year-old healthy male presented with blurriness in the inferior visual field, intermittent photopsia, multiple retinal hemorrhages, dilated and tortuous retinal vessels, and cotton wools spots in the right eye. The clinical examination and ancillary tests confirmed the diagnosis of a right eye BRVO. The visual symptoms started 2 days following first dose COVID-19 vaccination with the BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) mRNA vaccine. Conclusions and importance: This is a rare case of BRVO in an otherwise healthy young man, presenting after vaccination for COVID-19 in the absence of other coagulable risk factors. As the literature on venous thrombosis after COVID-19 vaccinations remains sparse, it is critical to raise awareness that BRVO could be a vaccine-related thrombotic adverse event. We highlight that as more of the population is vaccinated, an increased incidence of BRVO may confirm the link to COVID-19 vaccination.

The rapid growth of economy makes China the largest energy consumer and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emitter in the world. In this study, we estimated the trends and step changes in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) vertical column density (VCD) of SO2 from 2005 to 2015 over China measured by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). We show that these trends and step change years coincide with the effective date and period of the national strategy for energy development and relocation in northwestern China and the regulations in the reduction of SO2 emissions. Under the national regulations for the reduction of SO2 emissions in eastern and southern China, SO2 VCD in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of southern China exhibited the largest decline during 2005-2015 at a rate of -7%yr-1, followed by the North China Plain (NCP) (-6.7%yr-1/, Sichuan Basin (-6.3%yr-1), and Yangtze River Delta (YRD) (-6%yr-1). The Mann-Kendall (MK) test reveals the step change points of declining SO2 VCD in 2009 for the PRD and 2012-2013 for eastern China responding to the implementation of SO2 control regulation in these regions. In contrast, theMKtest and regression analysis also revealed increasing trends of SO2 VCD in northwestern China, particularly for several "hot spots" featured by growing SO2 VCD in those large-scale energy industry bases in northwestern China. The enhanced SO2 VCD is potentially attributable to increasing SO2 emissions due to the development of large-scale energy industry bases in energy-abundant northwestern China under the national strategy for the energy safety of China in the 21st century. We show that these largescale energy industry bases could overwhelm the trends and changes in provincial total SO2 emissions in northwestern China and contribute increasingly to the national total SO2 emissions in China. Given that northwestern China is more ecologically fragile and uniquely susceptible to atmospheric pollution than the rest of China, increasing SO2 emissions in this part of China should not be overlooked and merit scientific research. The optimum condition for the sedimentation process of concentrate pulp and tailing pulp in bauxite flotation was determined based on the supernatant turbidity study. The flotation tests were conducted to study the effect of recycled water turbidity and recycling time on the concentrate grade and recovery. The results demonstrate that recycled water with turbidity over 95 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU) cannot achieve the ideal concentrate compared to fresh water. In addition, recycled water that was reused twice in bauxite flotation demonstrated reduced selectivity. This is mainly caused by the accumulation of chlorine ions, which may enhance the entrainment of clays in the concentrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We conducted a cross-sectional survey including 23869 participants and aimed to measure the prevalences of and risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in a Chinese rural population. CKD and DKD status was defined according to the combination of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and presence of albuminuria Participant completed a questionnaire involving life-style and relevant medical history, and the blood and urinary specimen were taken. The age- and gender- adjusted prevalences of CKD and DKD were calculated and risk factors associated with the presence of CKD and DKD were analyzed by logistic regression. The overall prevalence of CKD was 16.4% (15.9–16.8%) and of DKD was 2.9% (2.7–3.1%). In participants with diabetes, the overall prevalence of CKD was 35.5% (95% CI = 33.7–37.3%). Factors independently associated with renal damage were age, gender, education, personal income, alcohol consumption, overweight, obesity, diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia. Our study shows current prevalences of CKD and DKD in Chinese rural residents. Further researches could identify potential factors explaining the observed differences and implement the interventions to relieve the high burden of CKD and DKD in rural population.

Methods Autophagic activities of renal tissues of patients with LN were evaluated under transmission electronic microscope (TEM). Immunoglobulin G (IgG) from patients with LN was purified to induce human podocyte injury, and the role of vitamin D in injury was observed. The high-efficiency development and utilization of bamboo resources can greatly alleviate the current shortage of wood and promote the neutralization of CO2. However, the wide application of bamboo-derived products is largely limited by their unideal surface properties with adhesive as well as poor gluability. Herein, a facile strategy using the surfactant-induced reconfiguration of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins was proposed to enhance the interface with bamboo and significantly improve its gluability. Specifically, through the coupling of a variety of surfactants, the viscosity and surface tension of the UF resins were properly regulated. Therefore, the resultant surfactant reconfigured UF resin showed much-improved wettability and spreading performance to the surface of both bamboo green and bamboo yellow. Specifically, the contact angle (CA) values of the bamboo green and bamboo yellow decreased from 79.6° to 30.5° and from 57.5° to 28.2°, respectively, with the corresponding resin spreading area increasing from 0.2 mm2 to 7.6 mm2 and from 0.1 mm2 to 5.6 mm2. Moreover, our reconfigured UF resin can reduce the amount of glue spread applied to bond the laminated commercial bamboo veneer products to 60 g m−2, while the products prepared by the initial UF resin are unable to meet the requirements of the test standard, suggesting that this facile method is an effective way to decrease the application of petroleum-based resins and production costs. More broadly, this surfactant reconfigured strategy can also be performed to regulate the wettability between UF resin and other materials (such as polypropylene board and tinplate), expanding the application fields of UF resin.
