In the pursuit of mitigating CO2 emissions, this study investigates the optimization of CO2 purification within a negative CO2 emission power plant using a spray ejector condenser (SEC) coupled with a separator. The approach involves direct‐contact condensation of vapor, primarily composed of an inert gas (CO2), facilitated by a subcooled liquid spray. A comprehensive analysis is presented, employing a numerical model to simulate a cyclone separator under various SEC outlet conditions. Methodologically, the simulation, conducted in Fluent, encompasses three‐dimensional, transient, and turbulent characteristics using the Reynolds stress model turbulent model and mixture model to replicate the turbulent two‐phase flow within a gas–liquid separator. Structural considerations are delved into, evaluating the efficacy of single‐ and dual‐inlet separators to enhance CO2 purification efficiency. The study reveals significant insights into the optimization process, highlighting a notable enhancement in separation efficiency within the dual‐inlet cyclone, compared to its single inlet counterpart. Specifically, a 90.7 % separation efficiency is observed in the former, characterized by symmetrical flow patterns devoid of wavering CO2 cores, whereas the latter exhibits less desirable velocity vectors. Furthermore, the investigation explores the influence of key parameters, such as liquid volume fraction (LVF) and water droplet diameter, on separation efficiency. It is ascertained that a 10 % LVF with a water droplet diameter of 10 µm yields the highest separation efficiency at 90.7 %, whereas a 20 % LVF with a water droplet diameter of 1 µm results in a reduced efficiency of 50.79 %. Moreover, the impact of structural modifications, such as the addition of vanes, on separation efficiency and pressure drop is explored. Remarkably, the incorporation of vanes leads to a 9.2 % improvement in separation efficiency and a 16.8 % reduction in pressure drop at a 10 % LVF. The findings underscore the significance of structural considerations and parameter optimization in advancing CO2 capture technologies, with implications for sustainable energy production and environmental conservation. The paper presents a modified in-house model for calculating heat transfer coefficients during flow condensation, which can be applied to a variety of working fluids, but natural refrigerants in particular, at full range thermodynamic parameters with a particular focus on increased saturation pressure. The modified model is based on a strong physical basis, namely the hypothesis of analogy between the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in two-phase flow. The model verification is based on a consolidated database that consists of 1286 data points for 7 natural refrigerants and covers the reduced pressure range (the ratio of critical pressure and saturation pressure) from 0.1 to 0.8 for different mass velocities and diameters. The new version of the in-house model, developed earlier by Mikielewicz, was compared with 4 other mathematical models widely recommended for engineering calculations and obtained the best consistency results. Achieving a quick temperature increase is a burning issue for biophysical applications, like germ inactivation and tumor ablation, and for energy performances, like solar collectors and steam generators. Based on the plasmon resonance phenomenon, noble metallic nanoparticles have emerged as promising weapons due to their very high biocompatibility, optical properties, and high surface-to-volume ratio, increasing energy conversion and allowing the maximum temperature to be reached faster. This work examines the energy conversion in sandwiched glassy platforms with gold nanorods. The platforms are kept vertically in the air and illuminated by a 0.5 W near-infrared laser (808 nm). To describe this aspect theoretically, the size and conversion efficiency of the electromagnetic properties are compromised between the proposed model and the stability of the nanorods. As a research approach, our model of cross-sections and polarizability for the surface effect is proposed, coupled with classical CFD numerical calculations. The results of the proposed model, validated by a thermal camera and spectroscopy measurements, indicate that as long as the energy conversion is visible with relatively low-power lasers (ΔT = 18.5 °C), the platforms do not offer fast heat dissipation. The results indicate that, despite the flow forcing by the air inflow, the entropy generation due to heat conduction is more than three orders higher than the dynamic entropy production. Flow forcing corresponds to the value of the velocity for classical convective motions. Therefore, the delivered heat flux must be distributed via convective transport or the associated high-conductive materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding thermodynamics can be challenging due to its dealing with abstract concepts such as entropy and energy transfer. This paper outlines six principles of thermodynamics, whose application necessitates a coherent overarching philosophy. The problems studied often entail complex mathematical equations, relying on a strong foundation in physics and mathematics. Moreover, comprehending thermodynamics requires a shift in thinking, focusing on macroscopic properties of matter rather than microscopic interactions, as in other branches of physics. Thermodynamics also introduces a new philosophy in science - the concept of irreversible phenomena, rooted in the heat flow theory, which is currently being extrapolated to other scientific domains. The paper presents the results of calculations performed using the authors′ model to predict the heat transfer coefficient during flow boiling for two refrigerants R134a and R1234yf. The experimental data from various past studies have been collected and the calculations have been conducted for the full range of quality variation and a wide range of mass velocity. The aim of the study was to test the sensitivity of the in-house flow boiling and flow condensation model. The importance of taking into account the surface tension as the parameter exhibiting its importance in case of the flow in minichannels, as well as the influence of the reduced pressure were analysed. The obtained numerical results show good consistency with those recorded in the experiments.

In the paper, new trends in the development of microchannel heat exchangers are presented. The exchangers developed in this way can be applied in marine industry. Main attention is focused on heat exchanger design with reduced size of passages, namely based on microchannels. In authors′ opinion, future development of high power heat exchangers will be based on networks of micro heat exchangers.

The combat potential of future warships will be directly related to the use of modern electronic devices being parts of advanced systems, such as, for instance, radar systems, fire aiming systems, fire detection systems, electric drive systems, and even electronic and radio-electronic weaponry, railguns and lasers, installed on these warships. The capacity and functionality of these devices is continually increasing, at decreasing mass and dimensions, which results in higher power consumption. Heat collection becomes a growing problem in operation of these devices.

The fuel efficiency of cooling air at the inlet of marine low speed diesel engine with water-fuel emulsion combustion by ejector chiller utilizing the heat of exhaust gas along the route line Mariupol– Amsterdam–Mariupol was estimated. The values of available refrigeration capacity of ejector chiller, engine intake air temperature drop and corresponding decrease in specific fuel consumption of the main diesel engine at varying climatic conditions along the route line were evaluated. Their values for water-fuel emulsion were compared with conventional fuel oil combustion.

The majority of integrated energy systems (IES) for combined electricity, heat and refrigeration generation, or trigeneration, are based on gas engines. The fuel efficiency of gas engines are strictly influenced by intake air temperatures. Practically in all IES the absorption lithium-bromide chillers (ACh) are applied for conversing the heat removed from the engine into refrigeration in the form of chilled water. The peculiarity of trigeneration in food industries is the use of chilled water of about 12°C for technological needs instead of 7°C as typical for ACh. This leads to a considerable great potential of engine intake air deeper cooling not realized by ACh, that can be used by ejector chiller (ECh) as the low temperature stage of two-stage absorption-ejector chiller (AECh) to provide engine cyclic air deep cooling and enhancing engine fuel efficiency. To evaluate the effect of gas engine cyclic air cooling the data on fuel consumption and power output of gas engine JMS 420 GS-N.L were analyzed.

The general trend to improve the fuel efficiency of gas turbines (GT) at increased ambient temperatures is turbine intake air cooling (TIAC) by exhaust heat recovery chillers The high efficiency absorption lithium-bromide chillers (ACh) of a simple cycle are the most widely used, but they are not able to cool intake air lower than 15°C because of a chilled water temperature of about 7°C. A two-stage hybrid absorption-ejector chillers (AECh) were developed with ejector chiller as a low temperature stage to provide deep air cooling to 10°C and lower. A novel trend in TIAC by two-stage air cooling in chillers of hybrid type has been proposed to provide about 50% higher annual fuel saving in temperate climatic conditions as compared with ACh cooling. The advanced methodology to design and rational distribute the cooling capacity of TIAC systems that provides a closed to maximum annual fuel reduction without oversizing was developed.

The outspread of bacterial pathogens causing severe infections and spreading rapidly, especially among hospitalized patients, is worrying and represents a global public health issue. Current disinfection techniques are becoming insufficient to counteract the spread of these pathogens because they carry multiple antibiotic-resistance genes. For this reason, a constant need exists for new technological solutions that rely on physical methods rather than chemicals. Nanotechnology support provides novel and unexplored opportunities to boost groundbreaking, next-gen solutions. With the help of plasmonic-assisted nanomaterials, we present and discuss our findings in innovative bacterial disinfection techniques. Gold nanorods (AuNRs) immobilized on rigid substrates are utilized as efficient white light-to-heat transducers (thermoplasmonic effect) for photo-thermal (PT) disinfection. The resulting AuNRs array shows a high sensitivity change in refractive index and an extraordinary capability in converting white light to heat, producing a temperature change greater than 50 °C in a few minute interval illumination time. Results were validated using a theoretical approach based on a diffusive heat transfer model. Experiments performed with a strain of Escherichia coli as a model microorganism confirm the excellent capability of the AuNRs array to reduce the bacteria viability upon white light illumination. Conversely, the E. coli cells remain viable without white light illumination, which also confirms the lack of intrinsic toxicity of the AuNRs array. The PT transduction capability of the AuNRs array is utilized to produce white light heating of medical tools used during surgical treatments, generating a temperature increase that can be controlled and is suitable for disinfection. Our findings are pioneering a new opportunity for healthcare facilities since the reported methodology allows non-hazardous disinfection of medical devices by simply employing a conventional white light lamp. Energy efficiency enhancement methods have received considerable attention within the industry and scientific community, owing to the rising concern of global energy sustainability. The present article attempts to scrutinize the effects of electrohydrodynamics and nanofluids on the rate of heat transfer and fluid flow in the 3-D chain microchannels. Improved heat exchangers (e.g., chain microchannel) would have a key role in increasing of the performance of such systems since they provide efficient thermal management needed for more robust computational power. To date, analysis of electrohydrodynamics and nanofluids in the chain microchannel was not comprehensively discussed. Here, steady-state, laminar, and three-dimensional chain microchannel are numerically modeled based on a control volume method in Fluent. Results show that by increasing the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the viscosity of the nanofluid increases leading to an increase in pressure drops. Moreover, Nusselt at Re = 125, 250, 500 and 1000 for hybrid nanofluid ( ∅ A L 2 O 3 = ∅ CuO = 4 %) is 1.206, 1.541, 2.075 and 2.707, respectively which, in turn, depicts surging by 22.94%, 24.17%, 24.70% and 24.707% in comparison to water, respectively. In addition, at low Reynolds number (0.416 ≤ R e ≤ 4.166) , the lower Reynolds results in decreasing of percentage of pressure drop. Meanwhile, imposing electrohydrodynamic (V = 30 KV) at Re= 125, 250, 500 and 1000 leads to increasing by 23%, 22%, 20% and 18% of Nusselt number in comparison to absence of electric field, respectively. It means that the considered effect of the increasing the Nusselt number at lower Reynolds number is more effective. Moreover, heat transfer rises with augmentation of supplied voltage and Reynolds number. Cooling degree-hours (CDH) received the broadest application in evaluation of the ambient air cooling efficiency in power engineering (engine intake air cooling systems) and air conditioning. The current CDH numbers are defined as a drop in air temperature multiplied by associated time duration of performance and their summarized annual number is used to estimate the annual effect achieved due to sucked air cooling in power plants based on combustion engines (fuel saving, power output increment) and in air conditioning (refrigeration energy generation according to needs). A majority of approaches to designing ambient air cooling systems is proceeding from the cooling capacity of the chillers selected to provide a maximum current or annual CDH number with corresponding maximum current or annual effect (additional energy produced or fuel consumption reduction) in site climate location. But such approaches lead to inevitable oversizing the chillers and cooling systems in the whole. The analysis of intake air cooling efficiency in site varying climatic conditions, accompanied by quite a simple numerical simulation, enabled to reveal the potential of its enhancement and evaluate numerically the results of each step of designing in logical sequence. The new approaches to cooling system rational designing were introduced, that enables to synthesize and substantiate innovative principal decisions to exclude unproductive waste of installed (design) cooling capacity in actual operation. The innovative findings of methodological approaches include the use of the rate of annual CDH number increment as an indicator for selecting the optimum and rational values of design cooling capacity. The optimum cooling capacity corresponds to maximum rate of summarized annual CDH increment and maximum level of thermal loading accordingly, which provides minimum sizes of the chiller. In reality, it is a minimum permissible value of cooling capacity of the chiller installed and the overall ambient air cooling system. The rational cooling capacity, that enables to achieve practically maximum value of annual CDH and avoid chiller oversizing, is determined as the second, local, maximum of the rate in the summarized annual CDH over the range above the first one, global, maximum. A rational design cooling capacity determined by applying the novel methodology allows to decrease the ambient air cooling system sizes by 15 to 20% compared with traditional designing issuing from the peaked thermal load during a year. The work presents initial studies of a reversed thermosiphon with a steam liquid lifter and a minigap evaporator. The main interest of the authors is the evaporator, especially the heat exchange efficiency and flow issues, such as maldistribution and pressure drop. However, because the thermosiphon circuit of such a construction is characterized by cyclic working conditions, which are quite difficult in analysis the authors focused on this specificity first. The article presents the concept of a test circuit and preliminary results for distilled water and for a minigap evaporator with a smooth heat exchange surface 100 x 200 mm and minigap thickness of 1 mm. Visualizations of the separator's work and the minigap boiling structures are presented.

In the paper are presented the results of follow on studies from [1]–[3] using authors own model to predict heat transfer coefficient during flow boiling. The model has been tested against a large selection of experimental data collected from various researchers to investigate the sensitivity of the in-house developed model. The collected experimental data came from various studies from literature and were conducted for the full range of quality variation and a wide range of mass velocity and saturation temperatures. In the work are presented the results of calculations obtained using the in-house developed semi empirical model on selected experimental flow boiling data of the refrigerants: R134a, R1234yf, R600a, R290, NH3, CO2, R236fa, R245fa, R152a and HFE7000. In the present study the particular attention was focused on the influence of reduced pressure on the predictions of the theoretical model. The results of calculations were to test the sensitivity of the flow boiling model with respect to selection of the appropriate two-phase flow multiplier, which is one of the distinctive elements of the in-house model. The main purpose of this paper however is to show the effect of the reduced pressure on the predictions of heat transfer during flow boiling.

In the paper presented are the results of the study on the effect of reduced pressure on flow boiling heat transfer data in minichannels as well as conventional ones. That effect renders that most of heat transfer correlations fail to return appropriate results of predictions. Mostly they have been developed for the reduced pressures from the range 0.1-0.3. The special correction has been postulated to the in-house model of flow boiling and condensation which modifies the two-phase flow multiplier as well as the temperature gradient in pool boiling. Four two-phase flow multiplier models were tested for this purpose, i.e. due to Friedel, Tran, Müller-Steinhagen and Heck and finally its in-house modification for applicability to minichannels. The model has been tested against a large selection of experimental data collected from various researchers to investigate the sensitivity of the in-house developed model. The collected experimental data came from various studies from literature and were conducted for the full range of quality variation and a wide range of mass velocity and saturation temperatures. In the work are presented the results of calculations obtained using the in-house developed semi empirical model on selected experimental flow boiling data related to carbon dioxide.

Condensing technology applied to boilers is to make full use of thermal energy contained in the fuel. That means that additionaly the heat from condensation of exhaust gases can be used for the purposes of heating the domestic hot water and to cover the demand for central heating. The study analyzed the operation of the “traditional” boiler equipped with the ORC module as the similar arrangement but with the condensing boiler. In the case of a conventional boiler there is noted a greater fuel consumption and the greater power generated than in the case of the unit with the condensing boiler. Postulated is the indicator in the form of a ratio of turbine power to the mass flow rate of fuel, which in turn gives a higher value for the condensing boiler, thus demonstrating that the operation of condensing boiler ORC module will be more economical. Perspective domestic micro CHP with ORC should be installed in boilers with recovery of heat from condensation from the exhaust gases.

Thermal control systems have been introduced as an important part of electronic devices, enabling thermal management of their electronic components. Loop heat pipe (LHP) is a passive two-phase heat transfer device with significant potential for numerous applications, such as aerospace applications, high-power LEDs, and solar central receivers. Its advantages are high heat transfer capability, low thermal resistance, long-distance heat transfer, and compact structure. The essential role of wick structures on the performance of LHPs has already been highlighted, but no comprehensive review is available that deals with different parameters such as LHP design and wick size, which are largely decisive and effective in achieving a practical level of thermal transmission governed by wick structures. To rely on this necessity, this article summarizes, analyzes, and classifies advancements in the design and fabrication of wick structures. The main conclusion to be drawn after careful monitoring and weighing of the related literature is that LHPs with composites and additively manufactured wicks show a higher heat transfer coefficient than other conventional structures. Indeed, future works should be focused on the design of more structurally efficient wicks, which may allow us to optimize materials and geometrical parameters of wick structure for higher heat transfer through LHPs.
