The van der Waals interaction enables atomically thin layers of exfoliated 2D materials to be interfaced in heterostructures with relaxed epitaxy conditions, however, the ability to exfoliate and freely stack layers without any strain or structural modification is by no means ubiquitous. In this work, the piezoelectricity of the exfoliated van der Waals piezoelectric α‐In2Se3 is utilized to modify the magnetic properties of exfoliated Fe3GeTe2, a van der Waals ferromagnet, resulting in increased domain wall density, reductions in the transition temperature ranging from 5 to 20 K, and an increase in the magnetic coercivity. Structural modifications at the atomic level are corroborated by a comparison to a graphite/α‐In2Se3 heterostructure, for which a decrease in the Tuinstra‐Koenig ratio is found. Magnetostrictive ferromagnetic domains are also observed, which may contribute to the enhanced magnetic coercivity. Density functional theory calculations and atomistic spin dynamic simulations show that the Fe3GeTe2 layer is compressively strained by 0.4%, reducing the exchange stiffness and magnetic anisotropy. The incorporation of α‐In2Se3 may be a general strategy to electrostatically strain interfaces within the paradigm of hexagonal boron nitride‐encapsulated heterostructures, for which the atomic flatness is both an intrinsic property and paramount requirement for 2D van der Waals heterojunctions. A novel method of measuring the core level binding energies of multiple sized nanoparticles on the same substrate is demonstrated using the early stage of Au nanoparticle growth on reduced r-TiO2(110). This method employed in situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and microfocused X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. An STM tip-shadowing method was used to synthesize patterned areas of Au nanoparticles on the substrate with different coverages and sizes. Patterns were identified and imaged using a UV photoelectron emission microscope. The Au 4f core level binding energies of the nanoparticles were investigated as a function of Au nanoparticle coverage and size. A combination of initial and final state effects modifies the binding energies of the Au 4f core levels as the nanoparticle size changes. When single Au atoms and Au3 clusters are present, the Au 4f7/2 binding energy, 84.42 eV, is similar to that observed at a high coverage (1.8 monolayer equivalent), resulting from a cancellation of initial and final state effects. As the coverage is increased, there is a decrease in binding energy, which then increases at a higher coverage to 84.39 eV. These results are consistent with a Volmer-Weber nucleation-growth model of Au nanoparticles at oxygen vacancies, resulting in electron transfer to the nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors describe and compare two complementary techniques that are habitually used to image ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials with sub‐micron spatial resolutions (typically 50 nm, at best 10 nm). The first technique is variable‐temperature photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic/antiferromagnetic/polar contrast from circularly/linearly polarized incident X‐rays (XPEEM). The second technique is magnetic force microscopy (MFM). Focusing mainly on the authors' own work, but not exclusively, published/unpublished XPEEM and MFM images of ferroic domains and complex magnetic textures (involving vortices and phase separation) are presented. Highlights include the use of two XPEEM images to create 2D vector maps of in‐plane (IP) magnetization, and the use of imaging to detect electrically driven local reversals of magnetization. The brief and simple descriptions of XPEEM and MFM should be useful for beginners seeking to employ these techniques in order to understand and harness ferroic materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emergent behaviors occur when simple interactions between a system's constituent elements produce properties that the individual elements do not exhibit in isolation. This article reports tunable emergent behaviors observed in domain wall (DW) populations of arrays of interconnected magnetic ring‐shaped nanowires under an applied rotating magnetic field. DWs interact stochastically at ring junctions to create mechanisms of DW population loss and gain. These combine to give a dynamic, field‐dependent equilibrium DW population that is a robust and emergent property of the array, despite highly varied local magnetic configurations. The magnetic ring arrays' properties (e.g., non‐linear behavior, "fading memory" to changes in field, fabrication repeatability, and scalability) suggest they are an interesting candidate system for realizing reservoir computing (RC), a form of neuromorphic computing, in hardware. We report room-temperature long-distance spin transport of magnons in antiferromagnetic thin-film hematite doped with Zn. The additional dopants significantly alter the magnetic anisotropies, resulting in a complex equilibrium spin structure that is capable of efficiently transporting spin angular momentum at room temperature without the need for a well-defined, pure easy-axis or easy-plane anisotropy. We find intrinsic magnon spin-diffusion lengths of up to 1.5 μm, and magnetic domain governed decay lengths of 175 nm for the low-frequency magnons, through electrical transport measurements demonstrating that the introduction of nonmagnetic dopants does not strongly reduce the transport length scale, showing that the magnetic damping of hematite is not significantly increased. We observe a complex field dependence of the nonlocal signal independent of the magnetic state visible, in the local magnetoresistance and direct magnetic imaging of the antiferromagnetic domain structure. We explain our results in terms of a varying and applied field-dependent ellipticity of the magnon modes reaching the detector electrode allowing us to tune the spin transport. Insertion devices are utilized at synchrotron radiation facilities around the world for their capability to provide a high‐brilliance X‐ray beam. APPLE‐II type undulators are especially important for their capacity to switch between a variety of photon beam polarization states. A high‐precision soft X‐ray polarimeter has been used to investigate the polarization calibration of an APPLE‐II undulator (period length λu = 64 mm) installed on beamline I06 at Diamond Light Source. Systematic measurement of the beam polarization state at a range of linear arbitrary angles has been compared with the expected result for a given set of undulator gap and row phase parameters calculated from theory. Determination of the corresponding Stokes–Poincaré parameters from the measured data reveals a discrepancy between the two. The limited number of energy/polarization combinations included in the undulator calibration tables necessitates the use of interpolated values for the missing points which is expected to contribute to the discrepancy. However, by modifying the orbit of the electron beam through the undulator by at least 160 µm it has been found that for certain linear polarizations the discrepancies can be corrected. Overall, it is suggested that complete correction of the Stokes–Poincaré parameters for all linear angles would require alteration of both these aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Supported metal nanoparticles form the basis of heterogeneous catalysts. Above a certain nanoparticle size, it is generally assumed that adsorbates bond in an identical fashion as on a semiinfinite crystal. This assumption has allowed the database on metal single crystals accumulated over the past 40 years to be used to model heterogeneous catalysts. Using a surface science approach to CO adsorption on supported Pd nanoparticles, we show that this assumption may be flawed. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, isolated to one nanoparticle, show that CO bonds upright on the nanoparticle top facets as expected from single-crystal data. However, the CO lateral registry differs from the single crystal. Our calculations indicate that this is caused by the strain on the nanoparticle, induced by carpet growth across the substrate step edges. This strain also weakens the CO-metal bond, which will reduce the energy barrier for catalytic reactions, including CO oxidation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synchrotron light source facilities worldwide generate terabytes of data in numerous incompatible data formats from a wide range of experiment types. The Data Analysis WorkbeNch ( DAWN) was developed to address the challenge of providing a single visualization and analysis platform for data from any synchrotron experiment (including single-crystal and powder diffraction, tomography and spectroscopy), whilst also being sufficiently extensible for new specific use case analysis environments to be incorporated ( e.g. ARPES, PEEM). In this work, the history and current state of DAWN are presented, with two case studies to demonstrate specific functionality. The first is an example of a data processing and reduction problem using the generic tools, whilst the second shows how these tools can be targeted to a specific scientific area. Using polarization-dependent x-ray photoemission electron microscopy, we have investigated the surface effects on antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain formation. Depth-resolved information obtained from our study indicates the presence of strain-induced surface AFM domains on some of the cleaved NiO(100) crystals, which are unusually thinner than bulk AFM domain wall widths (~150 nm). Existence of such magnetic skin layer is substantiated by exchange-coupled ferromagnetic Fe domains in Fe/NiO(100), thereby evidencing the influence of this surface AFM domains on interfacial magnetic coupling. Our observations demonstrate a depth evolution of AFM structure in presence of induced surface strain, while the surface symmetry-breaking in absence of induced strain does not modify the bulk AFM domain structure. Realization of such thin surface AFM layer will provide better microscopic understanding of the exchange bias phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Defects are inherent in transition metal dichalcogenides and significantly affect their chemical and physical properties. In this study, surface defect electrochemical nanopatterning is proposed as a promising method to tune in a controlled manner the electronic and functional properties of defective MoS₂ thin films. Using parallel electrochemical nanolithography, MoS₂ thin films are patterned, creating sulphur vacancy‐rich active zones alternated with defect‐free regions over a centimetre scale area, with sub‐micrometre spatial resolution. The patterned films display tailored optical and electronic properties due to the formation of sulphur vacancy‐rich areas. Moreover, the effectiveness of defect nanopatterning in tuning functional properties is demonstrated by studying the electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Abstract The redox behaviour modification following the addition of zirconia to ceria nanostructures supported on Rh(111) has been investigated using a combination of Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) and X-ray Photoemission Electron Microscopy (XPEEM). Soft X-ray irradiation was employed to reduce ZrO 2-x (111) supported on Rh(111) and, by introducing oxygen, the reoxidation process of the thin film was monitored. Ceria was then depositied with zirconia. Using XPEEM, we determined that the mixed metal oxide formed a phase-separated structure with CeO 2 (111) nanoparticles on top of the zirconia. Upon exposure of CeO 2-x /ZrO 2-x /Rh(111) to X-ray illumination, the zirconia no longer undergoes any observable reduction while at the same time the ceria is reduced. Our results indicate a synergy between the zirconia and ceria in the phase-separated system expected in the working catalyst, with oxygen transfer between the metal oxides. This sheds light on the mechanism of the enhancement of catalytic properties seen with the addition of zirconia to ceria and highlights the oxygen storage and release ability of ceria. We report on the effect of the lateral confinement and a perpendicular magnetic field on isolated room-temperature magnetic skyrmions in sputtered Pt/Co/MgO nanotracks and nanodots. We show that the skyrmions size can be easily tuned by playing on the lateral dimensions of the nanostructures and by using external magnetic field amplitudes of a few mT, which allow to reach sub-100 nm diameters. Our XMCD-PEEM observations also highlight the important role of the pinning on the skyrmions size and stability under an out-of-plane magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations reveal that the effect of local pinning can be well accounted for by considering the thin film grain structure with local anisotropy variations and reproduce well the dependence of the skyrmion diameter on the magnetic field and the geometry.
