Abstract

Many countries in the world are contaminated with landmines. Several thousand casualties occur every year. Although there are certain types of mines that can be detected from a safe stand-off position with tools, humanitarian demining is still mostly done by hand. As a new approach, an unmanned aerial system (UAS) equipped with a ground penetrating synthetic aperture radar (GPSAR) was developed, which is used to detect landmines, cluster munition, grenades, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The measurement system consists of a multicopter, a total station, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar operating from 1 GHz to 4 GHz. The highly accurate localization of the measurement system and the full flexibility of the UAS are used to generate 3D-repeat-pass circular SAR images of buried antipersonnel landmines. In order to demonstrate the functionality of the system, 15 different dummy landmines were buried in a sandbox. The measurement results show the high potential of circular SAR for the detection of minimum metal mines. 11 out of 15 different test objects could be detected unambiguously with cm-level accuracy by examining depth profiles showing the amplitude of the targets response over the processing depth., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

The packaging technology for transitions to dielectric waveguides in the frequency range above 100 GHz is complex and must be highly precise, and the waveguides are usually permanently connected. This letter presents a transition from a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) to a ���exible dielectric waveguide at G-Band (140���220 GHz), which is self-aligning and, thus, reduces the requirements for packaging accuracy. Furthermore, the transition is mechanically decoupled to avoid mechanical stress to the MMIC and to reconnect it arbitrarily often. A patch radiator on a quartz-glass carrier is excited by a coupler on the MMIC. It feeds the HE11 mode into a rigid, high-permittivity dielectric dome, which increases the coupling ef���ciency. The ���exible dielectric waveguide is placed above the dome and ���xed with Rohacell half shells. Abstract

This paper presents a new frequency-modulated continuous-wave front-end module intended to serve next-generation automotive radar sensors. Providing one transmit and eight receive channels, the module is designed to operate between a multibeam antenna and an advanced signal-processing unit. All receive channels are equipped with low-noise amplifiers, mixers for downconversion, and IF amplifiers. Cascaded buffer amplifiers for the local-oscillator signal enable parallel operation of all receive channels. A high-performance synthesizer provides generation and transmission of arbitrarily programmable frequency ramped waveforms with high stability and linearity. Slope and frequency deviation of the waveforms can be adjusted for the respective radar application. Short settling times of the synthesizer allow very fast slopes and, thus, short distance measurements. An overview of the overall front-end module design and realization approach is given, including a more detailed description of the synthesizer concept. All active millimeter-wave functions are realized with GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits assembled in a hermetically sealed multichip module (MCM). The MCM itself is incorporated into a three-layer printed-circuit-board stack onto which IF amplification, frequency control, waveform generation as well as dc and bias control is realized. A summary of the measured performance data obtained from correspondingly built-up prototypes is given. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is one of the tools supporting mine detection. In this contribution a wide-band frequency-modulated-continuous wave (FMCW) GPR operating in the frequency band from 0.6 GHz to 4.6GHz in a bistatic configuration is presented. The frequency synthesis is realized using a broadband voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) in a higher frequency band and mixed down to the desired frequency band. Abstract

Heute werden für Satelliten und militärische Anwendungen zunehmend hochauflösende Radarsysteme eingesetzt, die eine trägheitslose, adaptive und programmierbare elektronische Winkelabbildung erlauben. Die Technologien zur Realisierung solcher Systeme sind jedoch aufgrund der Vielzahl der benötigten Hochfrequenzbaugruppen sehr teuer. Demgegenüber gibt es kostengünstige Radarsysteme für automobile Anwendungen, deren Winkelabbildung jedoch deutlich weniger als die der teuren „highend“ Systeme leisten kann. Damit Autofahrer von zukünftigen Fahrerassistenzsystemen in komplexen und gefährlichen Verkehrssituationen noch besser unterstützt werden, sind Sensoren mit hoher Winkelauflösung und großem Sichtbereich notwendig. In dieser Arbeit wird versucht, mit Hilfe eines neuartigen Sensorkonzeptes die Vorteile hochauflösender Radarsysteme für den automobilen Einsatz nutzbar zu machen. In dem entworfenen Sensorkonzept wird eine einfache Hardwarearchitektur mit Methoden der digitalen Strahlformung verbunden. Dadurch wird eine low-cost- Lösung in kompakter Bauweise erreicht, die gegenüber den heute im Einsatz befindlichen automobilen Radarsensoren hinsichtlich Winkelauflösung, Sichtbereich und Flexibilität deutliche Vorteile bietet [9]. Zur Verifikation des Konzepts wurde an der Universität Ulm ein Demonstrationssystem bei einer Frequenz von 24GHz realisiert. Es besteht aus einem FMCW-Radarfrontend und einer abgesetzten Radarelektronik. In dem Frontend sind 25 schaltbare Sendeantennen und zwei parallel betriebene Empfänger realisiert. In einem Messzyklus werden die nacheinander für alle Sende-Empfangs-Kombinationen aufgenommenen FMCW-Messungen unter Verwendung von Methoden der digitalen Strahlformung zu einem Radarbild synthetisiert. Das Demonstrationssystem kann zusammen mit einem Notebook-PC betrieben werden und eignet sich wegen des kompakten Aufbaus vorzüglich zur Durchführung von Feldversuchen; eine schnelle und synchrone Datenaufnahme ermöglicht auch Versuche mit bewegten Objekten. Das Sensorkonzept wurde primär auf die Anforderungen für automobile Radarsensoren kurzer und mittlerer Reichweiten ausgelegt. Die in der Hardwarearchitektur realisierte Flexibilität hinsichtlich Signalerzeugung, Datenerfassung und Signalverarbeitung sowie das synthetische Abbildungsverfahren machen es jedoch für weitere Applikationen sehr interessant. So wurden beispielsweise erfolgreich Feldversuche zu Automatisierungsanwendungen im Tagebau durchgeführt.
