Serum and biliary lipid metabolism were examined in 13 patients with different types of hyperlipoproteinemia before and after 4 weeks of treatment with either bezafibrate or fenofibrate. In patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), bezafibrate (n = 5) and fenofibrate (n = 7) produced a similar significant reduction of total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides by 21, 23, and 32%, respectively. In patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia (CHL), only triglycerides decreased markedly. Biliary lipid secretion rates in patients with heterozygous FH were not different from those of young male volunteers, indicating that a reduction of hepatic LDL receptors did not affect hepatic elimination of cholesterol or bile acids. Biliary cholesterol secretion increased significantly from 57 to 75 mg/hr during bezafibrate therapy (n = 8) and from 62 to 71 mg/hr during fenofibrate therapy (n = 9). No consistent change in bile acid or phospholipid secretion was observed. The elevated output of biliary cholesterol increased cholesterol saturation significantly from 147 to 185% and from 152 to 173% during administration of bezafibrate and fenofibrate, respectively. The present study indicates that treatment with bezafibrate or fenofibrate is effective in lowering LDL cholesterol in patients with heterozygous FH, but both drugs increase cholesterol saturation of bile, which might enhance the risk of cholesterol gallstone formation.

In den letzten Jahren sind verschiedene Arbeiten veröffentlicht worden, die auf die regionale Verteilung von Produkt- und Prozeßinnovationen, auf die besondere Rolle von kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen in diesem Bereich und auf die regionalen innovationsfördernden und -hemmenden Faktoren eingehen. Diese Arbeiten deuten darauf hin, daß es regionale Unterschiede im Innovationspotential gibt. Allerdings bestand noch keine Klarheit über das Ausmaß dieser Unterschiede. Es fehlte vor allem an flächendeckenden Daten. Auch finden sich praktisch keine empirischen Ergebnisse über den Zusammenhang zwischen Innovation, Wachstum und Beschäftigung im regionalen Maßstab. Es ist Absicht dieses Beitrags, entsprechende Grundlagen zusammenzustellen. Die folgenden Auswertungen wurden durchgeführt:

This contribution analyses main changes in the strategic management of technology of the world's most technology-intensive companies from western Europe, North America and Japan. The results presented here are based on a literature review and a survey which show the following main results: first, R&D and technology have become key cornerstones of corporate and business strategy. Second, there is a growing tendency to acquire technology from external sources throughout the sample. Third, internationalization of R&D plays a very important role in the strategies of the large companies investigated and the data shows that it will certainly gain further momentum. However, internationalization of R&D is confined to the Triad regions and is not 'global'. Based on our analysis, cornerstones of a future generation of R&D/technology management are developed. This paper has been written in order to present empirical results about some hypotheses not yet very well clarified in innovation-oriented regional research. The first part relates to one of the assumptions underlying innovation-oriented regional policy, which is that innovating and non-innovating firms have different characteristics with respect to employment, product-lines and markets; in particular, the contribution to regional growth made by innovating firms is said to be larger. In the second part of the paper, the results of a study are presented in which it was attempted to find out empirically the extent of regional differences in indigenous innovation potential in the Federal Republic of Germany. Reference is made to the innovating firms, their performance and behaviour, and bottlenecks in innovation. As in other recent studies, it is confirmed that there exists also in rural regions a sizeable potential for innovation. Furthermore, measures of regional policy should not only be concentrated on the removal of locational bottlenecks, but should also focus on the direct motivation and support of innovation activities of firms. This paper is a contribution to the analysis of the relationship between technical change, economic development and employment. It forms part of a larger study of technical change and employment in Germany, encompassing a macroeconomic model of income circulation, a disaggregated econometric model of the sectoral differences of the effects of new technologies, and an input-output analysis of the direct and indirect effects of technological change. The present paper concentrates on examining the relationships between users and producers, the intersectoral technology flow matrix, and its links with the disaggregated demand model for analysing the influence of different technology variables on labour demand.
