A hybrid cutting using both plasma and end mill was developed for safe and efficient dismantling of nuclear facilities. In this cutting method, a moving arc plasma heats up the workpiece before milling. Thermally softened part of the workpiece is then removed quickly and deeply with an end mill. For the cutting experiments, a three-axis numerical control (NC) milling machine was combined with a commercialized arc plasma torch and used to cut 25 mm thick stainless steel plates. Experimental results revealed that pre-heating by arc plasmas can improve the cutting volume per unit time higher than 40% by reducing the cutting load and increasing the cuttable depth when using an end mill without cutting fluids. These advantages of a hybrid cutting process are expected to contribute to quick and safe segmentations of metal structures with radioactively contaminated inner surfaces.

PurposeThis study aimed to assess the reference values and factors influencing blood lead levels among Korean adolescents.MethodsThe study population consisted of 1,585 adolescents (801 males, 784 females; aged 10-19 years) who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2013. We analyzed blood lead concentrations in relation to demographic/lifestyle characteristics for all participants. "Reference values" of blood lead levels were calculated as the upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of the 95th percentile.ResultsThe average "reference value" for blood lead concentrations among Korean adolescents was 2.25 µg/dL (2.49 µg/dL for males, 2.07 µg/dL for females), and the geometric mean of the blood lead concentrations was 1.34 µg/dL. PurposeMany patients presenting with headache also complain of constipation; the relationship between these two symptoms has not been explored in detail. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between primary headache and constipation.MethodsThis retrospective study included all children who attended the Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital complaining of headache, and who had been followed up for at least 100 days. Patients were divided into 2 groups: group A, in whom the headache improved after treatment for constipation, and group B, in whom headache was not associated with constipation.ResultsOf the 96 patients with primary headache, 24 (25.0%) also had constipation (group A). All 24 received treatment for constipation. Follow-up revealed an improvement in both headache and constipation in all patients. Group B contained the remaining 72 children. Comparison of groups A and B indicated a significant difference in sex ratio (P=0.009, chi-square test). Patients with probable tension-type headache were more likely to be in Group A (P=0.006, chi-square test).ConclusionResolution of constipation improves headache in many patients diagnosed with primary headache, especially those with probable tension-type headache. We suggest that either constipation plays a key role in triggering headache, or that both constipation and headache share a common pathophysiology.

Liver enzyme elevations, as an indicator of liver function, are widely associated with metabolic diseases. Genome-wide population-based association studies have identified a genetic susceptibility to liver enzyme elevations and their related traits; however, the genetic architecture in childhood remains largely unknown. We performed a genome-wide association study to identify new genetic loci for liver enzyme levels in a Korean childhood cohort (n = 484). We observed three novel loci (rs4949718, rs80311637, and rs596406) that were multiply associated with elevated levels of alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase. Although there are some limitations, including genetic power, additional replication and functional characterization will support the clarity on the genetic contribution that the ST6GALNAC3, ADAMTS9, and CELF2 genes have in childhood liver function.

In recent years, electric vehicles (EVs) have significantly progressed due to their environmental protection and energy-saving advantages. However, maintaining indoor thermal comfort and effective battery thermal management are critical considerations for EVs. Unlike conventional vehicles, EVs cannot use waste heat and depend on heat pump systems for winter heating and summer cooling. This research proposes a novel system to reduce the energy consumption of heat pump systems by using recirculated air while addressing the challenges of battery temperature management and maintaining safe CO2 concentrations in the cabin. The primary objectives of this research are threefold: first, to ensure passenger comfort through an integrated approach that includes cabin CO2 concentration safety; second, to recover heat from recirculated cabin air to save energy and control battery temperature; and third, to comprehensively analyze the performance of the Electric Vehicle Thermal Management System (EVTMS) using precise Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis and mathematical modeling. This study will significantly enhance the understanding of energy consumption related to CO2 concentration control; an aspect previously overlooked in the literature. It will develop a battery temperature management strategy that leverages bus exhaust heat. These contributions will aid in achieving both passenger comfort and battery stability in electric buses, providing practical insights for the design and optimization of thermal management systems for future electric buses.

In this paper, we address the comment provided by Zheng and Palffy-Muhoray regarding our previous work on computing the closest approach distance of two ellipsoids. Additionally, we present experimental results that assess the numerical error bounds in the authors’ own implementation of the analytic solution for the closest approach distance of two ellipses. We report very rare cases where the closest approach distances of two ellipses are erroneously calculated as zero, which is impossible given that the radii of the ellipses are not zero.

This paper presents a novel method for computing an orthonormal tangent space at every vertex of a triangular mesh provided with texture coordinates, which is essential in normal mapping. Our method employs least-squares estimation of rotation between two sets of corresponding points: one set from the positions of the 1-ring neighbors of a vertex in texture space and the other set from their corresponding positions in world space. This optimal rotation represents a local space transformation that defines the tangent space at the vertex. Consequently, our method ensures that the resulting tangent space is inherently orthonormal, eliminating the need for intricate operations such as averaging and orthonormalization, which are required in the previous methods. In addition, we introduce texture space alignment of triangles to address vertices on seams, which are inevitable in texture mapping to a closed surface mesh. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods in various experiments.

This paper presents two practical methods for computing the closest approach distance of two ellipsoids in their inter-center direction. The closest approach distance is crucial for collision handling in the dynamic simulation of rigid and deformable bodies approximated with ellipsoids. To find the closest approach distance, we formulate a set of equations for two ellipsoids contacting each other externally in terms of the inter-center distance, contact point, and normal vector. The equations are solved robustly and efficiently using a hybrid of the fixed-point iteration method and bisection method with root bracketing, and a hybrid of Newton’s method and the bisection method. In addition to a stopping criterion expressed with the progress of the solution, we introduce a novel criterion expressed in terms of the error in distance. This criterion can be effectively employed in real-time applications such as computer games by allowing an unnoticeable error. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed methods in various experiments.

Post-burn pruritus is a common distressing consequence of burn wounds. Empirical treatment often fails to have a satisfactory outcome on post-burn pruritus, as the mechanism of post-burn pruritus has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the manifestation of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in post-burn pruritus. Fifty-one burn patients with (n = 33) or without (n = 18) pruritus were investigated, including skin biopsies. Not unexpectedly, the scarred body area was larger in the former group. In immunohistochemistry, TPRV3 was significantly elevated in the epidermis of burn scars with pruritus. Furthermore, real time- PCR showed that mRNA of TRPA1 and TRPV4 was increased in itching burn scars. Staining for substance P and CGRP did not differ between the 2 grouped, but the former neuropeptide was increased in burn scars. Purpose: Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) is considered an important prognostic factor in meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS). The aim of this study was to determine the comorbid risk factors for PPHN in infants with MAS. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 60 infants diagnosed with MAS and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the Sanggye Paik Hospital from January 2007 to April 2013. There were 28 infants (47%) with PPHN and 32 infants (53%) without PPHN. Clinical characteristics, laboratory findings within 24 hours after birth, and initial capillary blood gas analysis results were compared between infants with and without PPHN. Results: Incidence of PPHN was associated with the severity of MAS (P <0.001). The PPHN group had a greater incidence of hypotension and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy within 24 hours of birth compared to the non-PPHN group. The PPHN group also had a lower initial pH. However, there was no significant difference for laboratory findings within 24 hours of birth and initial capillary blood gas analysis. In the multivariate analysis, hypotension within 24 hours of birth (P =0.046, odds ratio 11.494, 95% confidence interval 1.048-125.00) was found to be a significant comorbid factor for PPHN in infants with MAS. Conclusion: Infants with MAS who develop hypotension within 24 hours of birth should be closely monitored for development of PPHN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a physically based controller that simulates the flapping behavior of a bird in flight. We recorded the motion of a dove using marker-based optical motion capture and high-speed video cameras. The bird flight data thus acquired allow us to parameterize natural wingbeat cycles and provide the simulated bird with reference trajectories to track in physics simulation. Our controller simulates articulated rigid bodies of a bird's skeleton and deformable feathers to reproduce the aerodynamics of bird flight. Motion capture from live birds is not as easy as human motion capture because of the lack of cooperation from subjects. Therefore, the flight data we could acquire were limited. We developed a new method to learn wingbeat controllers even from sparse, biased observations of real bird flight. Our simulated bird imitates life-like flapping of a flying bird while actively maintaining its balance. The bird flight is interactively controllable and resilient to external disturbances. This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin rods undergoing large rotational deformation. Rods are thin objects such as ropes and hairs that can be abstracted as one-dimensional structures. Development of a real-time physical model that can produce visually convincing animation of thin rods has been a challenging problem in computer graphics. We adopt continuum mechanics to formulate the governing equation, and develop a modal warping technique for rods to integrate the governing equation in real-time; This is a novel extension of the previous modal warping techniques developed for solids and shells. This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for thin shells undergoing large deformation. Shells are thin objects such as leaves and papers that can be abstracted as 2D structures. Development of a satisfactory physical model that runs in real-time but produces visually convincing animation of thin shells has been remaining a challenge in computer graphics. Rather than resorting to shell theory which involves the most complex formulations in continuum mechanics, we adopt the energy functions from the discrete shells proposed by Grinspun et al. [ GHDS03 ]. For real-time integration of the governing equation, we develop a modal warping technique for shells. This new simulation framework results from making extensions to the original modal warping technique [ CK05 ] which was developed for the simulation of 3D solids. We report experimental results, which show that the proposed method runs in real-time even for large meshes, and that it can simulate large bending and/or twisting deformations with acceptable realism. Color quantization replaces the color of each pixel with the closest representative color, and thus it makes the resulting image partitioned into uniformly-colored regions. As a consequence, continuous, detailed variations of color over the corresponding regions in the original image are lost through color quantization. In this paper, we present a novel blind scheme for restoring such variations from a color-quantized input image without a priori knowledge of the quantization method. Our scheme identifies which pairs of uniformly-colored regions in the input image should have continuous variations of color in the resulting image. Then, such regions are seamlessly stitched through optimization while preserving the closest representative colors. The user can optionally indicate which regions should be separated or stitched by scribbling constraint brushes across the regions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through diverse examples, such as photographs, cartoons, and artistic illustrations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Video taken from a single monocular camera is the most common means of recording human motion. In this article, we present a practical, semiautomatic method for synthesizing a human motion that is guided by such video. After preprocessing an input video, we select a precaptured motion clip called a reference motion from a motion library. We then compute the sequence of body configurations of a virtual character by deforming this motion, according to spacetime constraints derived from a sequence of 2D features in the input video, Experimental results show that our method can synthesize highly dynamic motions, such as kicking and header motions of soccer players. We also showed the potential of our scheme as a new paradigm for motion capture, that is, capturing motions from videos taken with a monocular camera, even outside a motion capture studio. This paper proposes a real-time simulation technique for large deformations. Green's nonlinear strain tensor accurately models large deformations; however, time stepping of the resulting nonlinear system can be computationally expensive. Modal analysis based on a linear strain tensor has been shown to be suitable for real-time simulation, but is accurate only for moderately small deformations. In the present work, we identify the rotational component of an infinitesimal deformation and extend traditional linear modal analysis to track that component. We then develop a procedure to integrate the small rotations occurring at the nodal points. An interesting feature of our formulation is that it can implement both position and orientation constraints in a straightforward manner. These constraints can be used to interactively manipulate the shape of a deformable solid by dragging/twisting a set of nodes. Experiments show that the proposed technique runs in real-time, even for a complex model, and that it can simulate large bending and/ or twisting deformations with acceptable realism.
