We consider a two-component Bose–Bose mixture at infinitely strong repulsive interactions in a tightly confining, one-dimensional ring trap and subjected to an artificial gauge field. By employing the Bethe Ansatz exact solution for the many-body wavefunction, we obtain the ground state energy and the persistent currents up to four particles. For each value of the applied flux, we then determine the symmetry of the state under particles exchange. We find that the ground-state energy and the persistent currents display a reduced periodicity with respect to the case of non-interacting particles, corresponding to reaching states with fractional angular momentum per particle. We relate this effect to the change of symmetry of the ground state under the effect of the artificial gauge field. Our results generalize the ones previously reported for fermionic mixtures with both attractive and repulsive interactions and highlight the role of symmetry in this effect.

Variational quantum algorithms aim at harnessing the power of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computers, by using a classical optimizer to train a parameterized quantum circuit to solve tractable quantum problems. The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is one of the aforementioned algorithms designed to determine the ground-state of many-body Hamiltonians. Here, we apply the VQE to study the ground-state properties of N -component fermions. With such knowledge, we study the persistent current of interacting SU(N) fermions, which is employed to reliably map out the different quantum phases of the system. Exciton-polariton condensates under driven-dissipative conditions are predicted to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, the dynamics of the condensate phase at long distance satisfying the same equation as for classical stochastic interface growth. We show that by engineering an external confinement for one-dimensional polaritons we can access two different universality sub-classes, which are associated to the flat or curved geometry for the interface. Our results for the condensate phase distribution and correlations match with great accuracy with the exact theoretical results for KPZ: the Tracy-Widom distributions (GOE and GUE) for the one-point statistics, and covariance of Airy processes (Airy1 and Airy2) for the two-point statistics. We consider molecules made of two one-dimensional short-range-interacting bosonic atoms. We show that in the process of scattering of these molecules off a narrow barrier, odd incident waves produce no unbound atoms, even when the incident energy exceeds the dissociation threshold. We demonstrate that such a feature originates from the fact that our system shares a part of its spectrum, namely its odd eigenstates, with a Bethe Ansatz integrable model, a δ-interaction Hamiltonian with local and non-local terms, associated with a reflection group C2—a full symmetry of a square. This partial integrability induces prohibition of chemical reactions, allowing us to make predictions about scattering processes. We suggest several experimental implementations of the effect. We also propose to use the monomer production as an alternative read-out channel in an atom interferometer: unlike in the standard interferometric schemes, no spatial separation of the output channels will be required. We consider multi-component quantum mixtures (bosonic, fermionic, or mixed) with strongly repulsive contact interactions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. In the limit of infinitely strong repulsion and zero temperature, using the class-sum method, we study the symmetries of the spatial wave function of the mixture.Wefind that the ground state of the system has the most symmetric spatial wave function allowed by the type of mixture. This provides an example of the generalized Lieb–Mattis theorem. Furthermore, we show that the symmetry properties of the mixture are embedded in the large-momentum tails of the momentum distribution, which we evaluate both at infinite repulsion by an exact solution and at finite interactions using a numerical DMRG approach. This implies that an experimental measurement of the Tan’s contact would allow to unambiguously determine the symmetry of any kind of multi-component mixture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the dynamic structure factor of a one-dimensional Bose gas confined in an optical lattice and modeled by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, using a variety of numerical and analytical approaches. The dynamic structure factor, experimentally measurable by Bragg spectroscopy, is studied in three relevant cases: in the clean regime, featuring either a superfluid or a Mott phase; and in the presence of two types of (quasi-)disordered external potentials: a quasi-periodic potential obtained from a bichromatic superlattice and a random box disorder—both featuring a Bose-glass phase. In the clean case, we show the emergence of a gapped doublon mode (corresponding to a repulsively bound state) for incommensurate filling, well separated from the low-energy acoustic mode. In the disordered case, we show that the dynamic structure factor provides direct insight into the spatial structure of the excitations, unveiling their localized nature, which represents a fundamental signature of the Bose-glass phase. Furthermore, it provides a clear fingerprint of the very nature of the localization mechanism which differs for the two kinds of disorder potentials we consider. In special cases, the dynamic structure factor may provide an estimate of the position of the localization transition from superfluid to Bose glass, in a complementary manner to the information deduced from the momentum distribution. Ultra cold polar bosons in a disordered lattice potential, described by the extended Bose-Hubbard model, display a rich phase diagram. In the case of uniform random disorder one finds two insulating quantum phases—the Mott-insulator and the Haldane insulator—in addition to a superfluid and a Bose glass phase. In the case of a quasiperiodic potential, further phases are found, e.g. the incommensurate density wave, adiabatically connected to the Haldane insulator. For the case of weak random disorder we determine the phase boundaries using a perturbative bosonization approach. We then calculate the entanglement spectrum for both types of disorder, showing that it provides a good indication of the various phases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We determine the finite-temperature momentum distribution of a strongly interacting 1D Bose gas in the Tonks-Girardeau (impenetrable-boson) limit under harmonic confinement and explore its universal properties associated to the scale invariance of the model. We show that, at difference from the unitary Fermi gas in three dimensions, the weight of its large-momentum tails-given by Tan's contact - increases with temperature and calculate the high-temperature universal second contact coefficient using a virial expansion. The quantum Fisher information (QFI) is a fundamental quantity of interest in many areas from quantum metrology to quantum information theory. It can in particular be used as a witness to establish the degree of multiparticle entanglement in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we use polynomials of the density matrix to construct monotonically increasing lower bounds that converge to the QFI. Using randomized measurements we propose a protocol to accurately estimate these lower bounds in state-of-the-art quantum technological platforms. We estimate the number of measurements needed to achieve a given accuracy and confidence level in the bounds, and present two examples of applications of the method in quantum systems made of coupled qubits and collective spins. The universal Tan relations connect a variety of microscopic features of many-body quantum systems with two-body contact interactions to a single quantity, called the contact. The latter has become pivotal in the description of quantum gases. We provide a complete characterization of the Tan contact of the harmonically trapped Lieb-Liniger gas for arbitrary interactions and temperature. Combining thermal Bethe ansatz, local-density approximation, and exact quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we show that the contact is a universal function of only two scaling parameters, and determine the scaling function. We find that the temperature dependence of the contact, or equivalently the interaction dependence of the entropy, displays a maximum. The presence of this maximum provides an unequivocal signature of the crossover to the fermionized regime and it is accessible in current experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using angle-resolved Raman spectroscopy, we show that a resonantly excited ground-state exciton-polariton fluid behaves like a nonequilibrium coolant for its host solid-state semiconductor microcavity. With this optical technique, we obtain a detailed measurement of the thermal fluxes generated by the pumped polaritons. We thus find a maximum cooling power for a cryostat temperature of 50 K and below where optical cooling is usually suppressed, and we identify the participation of an ultrafast cooling mechanism. We also show that the nonequilibrium character of polaritons constitutes an unexpected resource: each scattering event can remove more heat from the solid than would be normally allowed using a thermal fluid with normal internal equilibration. We study persistent currents for interacting one-dimensional bosons on a tight ring trap, subjected to a rotating barrier potential, which induces an artificial t/(l) gauge field. We show that, at intermediate interactions, the persistent current response is maximal, due to a subtle interplay of effects due to the barrier, the interaction, and quantum fluctuations. We report on the measurement of first-order spatial correlations on a one-dimensional 97% excitonic polariton condensate, excited in cooled ZnO microwires by nonresonant optical pulses. We find that, thanks to the tiny 3% photonic fraction, a coherence length as large as 10 μm can build up, i.e., orders of magnitude larger than any reported so far for an ultracold exciton gas. Based on a driven-dissipative mean-field model we show that the decay of correlations is mainly due to a shallow disorder and driven-dissipative conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyze the effects of disorder and quasidisorder on the ground-state properties of ultracold polar bosons in optical lattices. We show that the interplay between disorder and intersite interactions leads to rich phase diagrams. A uniform disorder leads to a Haldane-insulator phase with finite parity order, whereas the density-wave phase becomes a Bose glass at very weak disorder. For quasidisorder, the Haldane insulator connects with a gapped generalized incommensurate density wave without an intermediate critical region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In transition metal dichalcogenides' layers of atomic-scale thickness, the electron-hole Coulomb interaction potential is strongly influenced by the sharp discontinuity of the dielectric function across the layer plane. This feature results in peculiar nonhydrogenic excitonic states in which exciton-mediated optical nonlinearities are predicted to be enhanced compared to their hydrogenic counterparts. To demonstrate this enhancement, we perform optical transmission spectroscopy of a MoSe2 monolayer placed in the strong coupling regime with the mode of an optical microcavity and analyze the results quantitatively with a nonlinear input-output theory. We find an enhancement of both the exciton-exciton interaction and of the excitonic fermionic saturation with respect to realistic values expected in the hydrogenic picture. Such results demonstrate that unconventional excitons in MoSe2 are highly favorable for the implementation of large exciton-mediated optical nonlinearities, potentially working up to room temperature. We study an ultracold atomic gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that its excitation spectrum displays a quantum soliton band, corresponding to N-particle bound states, and a continuum band of other, mostly extended, states. For a system of a finite size, the two branches are degenerate in energy for weak interactions, while a gap opens above a threshold value of the interaction strength. We find that the interplay between degenerate extended and bound states has important consequences for both static and dynamical properties of the system. In particular, the solitonic states turn out to be protected from spatial perturbations and random disorder. We discuss how such dynamics implies that our system effectively provides an example of a quantum many-body system that, with the variation of the bosonic lattice filling, crosses over from integrable nonergodic to nonintegrable ergodic dynamics, through nonintegrable-nonergodic regimes. Exciton polaritons constitute a unique realization of a quantum fluid interacting with its environment. Using selenide-based microcavities, we exploit this feature to warm up a polariton condensate in a controlled way and monitor its spatial coherence. We determine directly the amount of heat picked up by the condensate by measuring the phonon-polariton scattering rate and comparing it with the loss rate. We find that, upon increasing the heating rate, the spatial coherence length decreases markedly, while localized phase structures vanish, in good agreement with a stochastic mean-field theory. From the thermodynamical point of view, this regime is unique, as it involves a nonequilibrium quantum fluid with no well-defined temperature but which is nevertheless able to pick up heat with dramatic effects on the order parameter. Semiconductor microcavities in the strong-coupling regime exhibit an energy scale in the terahertz (THz) frequency range, which is fixed by the Rabi splitting between the upper and lower exciton-polariton states. While this range can be tuned by several orders of magnitude using different excitonic media, the transition between both polaritonic states is dipole forbidden. In this work, we show that, in cadmium telluride microcavities, the Rabi-oscillation-driven THz radiation is actually active without the need for any change in the microcavity design. This feature results from the unique resonance condition which is achieved between the Rabi splitting and the phonon-polariton states and leads to a giant enhancement of the second-order nonlinearity.
