Understanding the properties of molecular nitrogen N2 at extreme conditions is the fundamental problem for atomistic theory and the important benchmark for the capabilities of first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) methods. In this work, we focus on the connection between the dynamics of ions and electronic excitations in warm dense N2. The restricted open-shell Kohn–Sham method gives us the possibility to reach relevant time and length scales for FPMD modeling of an isolated exciton dynamics in warm dense N2. Wannier localization sheds light on the corresponding mechanisms of covalent bond network rearrangements that stand behind polymerization kinetics. FPMD results suggest a concept of energy transfer from the thermal energy of ions into the internal energy of polymeric structures that form in warm dense N2 at extreme conditions. Our findings agree with the thermobaric conditions for the onset of absorption in the optical spectroscopy study of Jiang et al. [Nat. Commun. 9, 2624 (2018)]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Up to 17 GPa, the crystalline phases of N2 are characterized by pronounced orientational disorder, whereas the higher-pressure phases of molecular N2 are ordered. This raises the question about long-term relaxation of orientational disorder within the low- to intermediate-pressure regime. Here, this question is addressed by comparing synthetic with natural, chemically pure, solid N2 that resides as inclusions in diamonds at 300 K for about 108 years at pressures up to 11 GPa. It is shown that disorder prevails at 8.7 GPa, 300 K, where both synthetic and natural N2 assume the same structure. However, at 10.8 GPa, natural solid N2 exhibits monoclinic distortion and partial orientational ordering of the molecules, both of which are not observed in synthetic material. This difference is interpreted as the result of long-term structural relaxation. The ordering mechanism is examined and placed into the context of the δ- to ε-N2 transition. The contribution of atomic nitrogen is fairly possible in plasma-assisted catalytic synthesis of ammonia since it has high adsorption probabilities on solid surfaces. On the other hand, recently, the contribution of vibrational excited molecular nitrogen to ammonia synthesis has been discussed. In this work, we compared the fluxes of atomic nitrogen and vibrational excited molecular nitrogen with the rate of plasma-assisted ammonia synthesis. We employed an atmospheric-pressure nitrogen plasma jet, and the spatial afterglow of the plasma jet and a hydrogen flow irradiated the surface of a ruthenium catalyst. The fluxes of atomic nitrogen and vibrational excited molecular nitrogen were measured by two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy and laser Raman scattering, respectively. The synthesis rate of ammonia had a positive correlation with the flux of vibrational excited molecular nitrogen, while the variation of the synthesis rate with the gas flow rate was opposite to the flux of atomic nitrogen. The experimental results indicate the contribution of vibrational excited molecular nitrogen to the synthesis of ammonia using the atmospheric-pressure plasma, where the flux of vibrational excited molecular nitrogen is more than four orders of magnitude higher than that of atomic nitrogen. Unlike naturally occurring oxide crystals such as ruby and gemstones, there are no naturally occurring nitride crystals because the triple bond of the nitrogen molecule is one of the strongest bonds in nature. Here, we report that when the transition metal scandium is subjected to molecular nitrogen, it self-catalyzes to break the nitrogen triple bond to form highly crystalline layers of ScN, a semiconductor. This reaction proceeds even at room temperature. Self-activated ScN films have a twin cubic crystal structure, atomic layering, and electronic and optical properties comparable to plasma-based methods. We extend our research to showcase Sc’s scavenging effect and demonstrate self-activated ScN growth under various growth conditions and on technologically significant substrates, such as 6H–SiC, AlN, and GaN. Ab initio calculations elucidate an energetically efficient pathway for the self-activated growth of crystalline ScN films from molecular N2. The findings open a new pathway to ultralow-energy synthesis of crystalline nitride semiconductor layers and beyond.

Wave packet interferometry with vacuum ultraviolet light has been used to probe a complex region of the electronic spectrum of molecular nitrogen, N2. Wave packets of Rydberg and valence states were excited by using double pulses of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), free-electron-laser (FEL) light. These wave packets were composed of contributions from multiple electronic states with a moderate principal quantum number (n ∼ 4–9) and a range of vibrational and rotational quantum numbers. The phase relationship of the two FEL pulses varied in time, but as demonstrated previously, a shot-by-shot analysis allows the spectra to be sorted according to the phase between the two pulses. The wave packets were probed by angle-resolved photoionization using an infrared pulse with a variable delay after the pair of excitation pulses. The photoelectron branching fractions and angular distributions display oscillations that depend on both the time delays and the relative phases of the VUV pulses. The combination of frequency, time delay, and phase selection provides significant control over the ionization process and ultimately improves the ability to analyze and assign complex molecular spectra. Generation of coherent extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses is a nonlinear process of high harmonic generation (HHG). HHG produced in molecular nitrogen (N2) medium has been obtained using ultrashort intense laser pulses. The strong laser field was focused onto a gas cell to produce short wavelengths having photon energy up to 54 eV. The highest photon energy is experimentally observed as the 35th order. The absorption of harmonics restricts the harmonic yield efficiency. The harmonic yield is affected by the interaction length and medium pressure. The harmonic yield changes with the medium parameters. The simulation for the absorption length was performed using the Mathematica program. Variation of the harmonic signal has been attributed to the absorption of harmonics, and it is compared with the absorption length.

We studied luminescence accompanied an injection of the nitrogen-helium gas mixture after passing discharge into dense cold helium gas. Initially, when the experimental beaker was filled with superfluid helium and the nitrogen-helium gas was injected into bulk superfluid helium at T ≈ 1.5 K, the dominant band in the emission spectra was the α-group of nitrogen atoms. At these conditions, the nanoclusters of molecular nitrogen with high concentrations of stabilized nitrogen atoms were formed. When superfluid helium was evaporated from the beaker and the temperature at the bottom of the beaker was increased to T ≈ 20 K, we observed a drastic change in the luminescence spectra. The β-group of oxygen atoms was dominated in the luminescence spectra, and the emission of the α-group became small. At high temperatures (T ≈ 20 K), most of the nitrogen atoms recombine on the surface of N2 nanoclusters with the formation of excited nitrogen molecules. We explained the effect of the enhancement of β-group emission by effective energy transfer from excited nitrogen molecules to the stabilized impurity oxygen atom inside N2 nanoclusters. Interactions of N2 at oxide surfaces are important for understanding electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) mechanisms. Interactions of N2 at the polycrystalline vanadium oxide/vapor interface were monitored at room temperature and total pressures up to 10−1 Torr using Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (NAP-XPS). The oxide film was predominantly V(IV), with V(III) and V(V) components. XPS spectra were acquired in environments of both pure N2 and equal pressures of N2 and H2O vapor. In pure N2, broad, partially resolved N1s features were observed at binding energies of 401.0 and 398.7 eV, with a relative intensity of ∼3:1, respectively. These features remained upon subsequent pumpdown to 10−9 Torr. The observed maximum N surface coverage was ∼1.5 × 1013 cm−2—a fraction of a monolayer. In the presence of equal pressures of H2O, the adsorbed N intensity at 10−1 Torr is ∼25% of that observed in the absence of H2O. The formation of molecularly adsorbed H2O was also observed. Density functional theory-based calculations suggest favorable absorption energies for N2 bonding to both V(IV) and V(III) cation sites but less so for V(V) sites. Hartree–Fock-based cluster calculations for N2–V end-on adsorption show that experimental XPS doublet features are consistent with the calculated shake-up and normal, final ionic configurations for N2 end-on bonding to V(III) sites but not V(IV) sites. The XPS spectra of vanadium oxide transferred in situ between electrochemical and UHV environments indicate that the oxide surfaces studied here are stable upon exposure to the electrolyte under NRR-relevant conditions. N2 is a major constituent of Earth and planetary atmospheres. First, evidenced in 1952, the dissociative photoionization of molecular nitrogen, N2, plays an important role in the species abundance, out of equilibrium evolution, and chemical reactivity of diverse media including upper atmospheres (the so-called ionospheres) and plasma. Many scenarios were proposed for rationalizing the dissociative ionization mechanisms and exit channels, which are reviewed here, mainly involving the N2+(C2∑u+, v+) vibrational levels state-to-state dynamics on which we focus. We show, however, that previous studies are not comprehensive enough for fully shedding light on the complex undergoing processes. As a complementary global work, we used state-of-the-art quantum chemistry, time dependent and independent theoretical approaches associated to advanced experimental techniques to study the unimolecular decomposition of the N2+ ions forming the N+ + N products. In addition to the already suggested spin-orbit-induced predissociation of the cationic C2∑u+ state, we documented a new mechanism based on vibronic coupling and tunneling dissociation. Besides, the quantum processes highlighted here should be also in action in the dynamics of electronically excited larger molecular systems involved in physical and chemical phenomena in plasma and in various natural environments on Earth and beyond.

We have used the FERMI free-electron laser to perform time-resolved photoelectron imaging experiments on a complex group of resonances near 15.38 eV in the absorption spectrum of molecular nitrogen, N2, under jet-cooled conditions. The new data complement and extend the earlier work of Fushitani et al. [Opt. Express 27, 19702–19711 (2019)], who recorded time-resolved photoelectron spectra for this same group of resonances. Time-dependent oscillations are observed in both the photoelectron yields and the photoelectron angular distributions, providing insight into the interactions among the resonant intermediate states. In addition, for most states, we observe an exponential decay of the photoelectron yield that depends on the ionic final state. This observation can be rationalized by the different lifetimes for the intermediate states contributing to a particular ionization channel. Although there are nine resonances within the group, we show that by detecting individual photoelectron final states and their angular dependence, we can identify and differentiate quantum pathways within this complex system. We investigated the vibrational temperature of molecular nitrogen in the downstream of helicon-wave excited helium and argon-based plasmas. It was confirmed by optical emission spectroscopy that the major part of the helium plasma was at a recombining state and it had an ultralow electron temperature of approximately 0.1Â eV. In spite of the ultralow electron temperature, the vibrational temperature of molecular nitrogen, which was added into the helium plasma, was higher than that in the argon-based plasma at an ionizing state with an electron temperature of 1.7Â eV. According to the relationship between the rate coefficient of electron impact vibrational excitation and the electron temperature, the higher vibrational temperature in the helium plasma is not attributable to the more efficient vibrational excitation. Therefore, the higher vibrational temperature is owing to the less efficient destruction of vibrational excited states in the helium plasma with the ultralow electron temperature. We report experimental data on rotating plasma disturbances in a quasi-steady direct-current magnetron discharge operating with molecular nitrogen at pressures of 27, 40, 67, and 133 Pa. Experiments with a segmented anode measuring the local current flow reveal up to 12 coherent structures ("spokes") propagating in the + E × B and − E × B azimuthal directions. The current–voltage characteristics are studied and found to follow a negative resistance profile at the lower discharge currents. The existence of coherent structures and the number of spokes observed depend on the discharge current and operating pressure. Lower pressures are more favorable to the retrograde − E × B spoke rotation, which is observed in the 27, 40, and 67 Pa discharges. The results are interpreted with a gradient-driven drift wave model, and using the dispersion relation, we show that the propagation direction depends on the orientation of the local electric field within the plasma. Using an electron fluid model, we show how experimental conditions can lead to field reversals that generate − E × B spoke rotation in the lower pressure discharges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential energy curves for molecular ions up to N 2 4 + are calculated in an ab initio manner using the multi configurational self-consistent field method. Specifically, we implement in an automatic way a previously used double loop optimisation scheme within the multi configurational self-consisted field method. We obtain the potential energy curves up to N 2 4 + ions with any combination of core, inner valence, and outer valence holes.
