Stimuli-responsive macromolecules display large conformational changes during their dynamics, sometimes switching between states. Such a multi-stability is useful for the development of soft functional materials. Here, we introduce a mean-field dynamical density functional theory for a model of responsive colloids to study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a colloidal dispersion in time-dependent external fields, with a focus on the coupling of translational and conformational dynamics during their relaxation. Specifically, we consider soft Gaussian particles with a bimodal size distribution between two confining walls with time-dependent (switching-on and off) external gravitational and osmotic fields. We find a rich relaxation behavior of the systems in excellent agreement with particle-based Brownian dynamics computer simulations. In particular, we find time-asymmetric relaxations of integrated observables (wall pressures, mean size, and liquid center-of-mass) for activation/deactivation of external potentials, respectively, which are tunable by the ratio of translational and conformational diffusion time scales. Our work thus paves the way for studying the nonequilibrium relaxation dynamics of complex soft matter with multiple degrees of freedom and hierarchical relaxations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We explore theoretically the effects of external potentials on the spatial distribution of particle properties in a liquid of explicitly responsive macromolecules. In particular, we focus on the bistable particle size as a coarse-grained internal degree of freedom (DoF, or "property"), σ, that moves in a bimodal energy landscape, in order to model the response of a state-switching (big-to-small) macromolecular liquid to external stimuli. We employ a mean-field density functional theory (DFT) that provides the full inhomogeneous equilibrium distributions of a one-component model system of responsive colloids (RCs) interacting with a Gaussian pair potential. For systems confined between two parallel hard walls, we observe and rationalize a significant localization of the big particle state close to the walls, with pressures described by an exact RC wall theorem. Application of more complex external potentials, such as linear (gravitational), osmotic, and Hamaker potentials, promotes even stronger particle size segregation, in which macromolecules of different size are localized in different spatial regions. Importantly, we demonstrate how the degree of responsiveness of the particle size and its coupling to the external potential tune the position-dependent size distribution. The DFT predictions are corroborated by Brownian dynamics simulations. Our study highlights the fact that particle responsiveness can be used to localize liquid properties and therefore helps to control the property- and position-dependent function of macromolecules, e.g., in biomedical applications. In this work, isotactic Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide)--PNIPAM--in neat water and in electrolyte solutions is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations. This is done for an infinitely diluted oligomer and for an assembly of several PNIPAM chains arranged into a planar membrane configuration with a core-shell morphology. We employed two different force fields, AMBER (assisted model building with energy refinement) and OPLS-AA (all atom - optimized potentials for liquid simulations) in combination with extended simple point charge water. Despite the more water insoluble character of isotactic oligomers, our results support the existence of a coil to globule transition for the isolated 30-mer. This may imply the existence of an oligomer rich phase of coil-like structures in equilibrium with a water rich phase for temperatures close but below the coil to globule transition temperature, TΘ. However, the obtained coil structure is much more compact than that corresponding to the syndiotactic chain. Our estimations of TΘ are (308 ± 5) K and (303 ± 5) K for AMBER and OPLS-AA, respectively. The membrane configuration allows one to include chain-chain interactions, to follow density profiles of water, polymer, and solutes, and accessing the membrane-water interface tension. Results show gradual shrinking and swelling of the membrane by switching temperature above and below TΘ, as well as the increase and decrease of the membrane-water interface tension. Finally, concentration profiles for 1M NaCl and 1M NaI electrolytes are shown, depicting a strong salting-out effect for NaCl and a much lighter effect for NaI, in good qualitative agreement with experiments. In recent work we revisited the phase diagram of hard ellipsoids of revolution (spheroids) by means of replica exchange Monte Carlo simulations. This was done by setting random initial configurations, and allows to confirm the formation of sm2 crystal structures at high densities [P. Pfleiderer and T. Schilling, Phys. Rev. E 75, 020402 (2007)] for large anisotropies and stretched-fcc for small anisotropies. In this work we employed the same technique but setting the starting cells as sm2 crystal structures having the maximum known packing density [A. Donev, F. H. Stillinger, P. M. Chaikin, and S. Torquato, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 255506 (2004)]. This procedure yields a very rich behavior for quasi-spherical oblates and prolates. These systems, from low to high pressures, show the following phases: isotropic fluid, plastic solid, stretched-fcc solid, and sm2 solid. The first three transitions are first order, whereas the last one is a subtle, probably high order transition. This picture is consistent with the fact of having the sm2 structure capable of producing the maximally achievable density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work the equilibrium absorption of nanometric cosolutes (which could represent drugs, reactants, small globular proteins and other kind of biomacromolecules) inside neutral hydrogels is studied. We specially focus on exploring, for different swelling states, the competition between the steric exclusion induced by the cross-linked polymer network constituting the hydrogel, and the solvent-induced short-range hydrophobic attraction between the polymer chains and the cosolute particle. For this purpose, the cosolute partition coefficient is calculated by means of coarse-grained grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, and the results are compared to theoretical predictions based on the calculation of the excluded and binding volume around the polymer chains. For small hydrophobic attractions or large cosolute sizes, the steric repulsion dominates, and the partition coefficient decreases monotonically with the polymer volume fraction, Φm. However, for large enough hydrophobic attraction strength, the interplay between hydrophobic adhesion and the steric exclusion leads to a maximum in the partition coefficient at certain intermediate polymer density. Good qualitative and quantitative agreement is achieved between simulation results and theoretical predictions in the limit of small Φm, pointing out the importance of geometrical aspects of the cross-linked polymer network, even for hydrogels in the swollen state. In addition, the theory is able to predict analytically the onset of the maximum formation in terms of the details of the cosolute–monomer pair interaction, in good agreement with simulations too. Finally, the effect of the many-body attractions between the cosolute and multiple polymer chains is quantified. The results clearly show that these many-body attractions play a very relevant role determining the cosolute binding, enhancing its absorption in more than one order of magnitude. In this work the equilibrium distribution of ions around a thermo-responsive charged nanogel particle in an electrolyte aqueous suspension is explored using coarse-grained Monte Carlo computer simulations and the Ornstein–Zernike integral equation theory. We explicitly consider the ionic size in both methods and study the interplay between electrostatic and excluded-volume effects for swollen and shrunken nanogels, monovalent and trivalent counterions, and for two different nanogel charges. We find good quantitative agreement between the ionic density profiles obtained using both methods when the excluded repulsive force exerted by the cross-linked polymer network is taken into account. For the shrunken conformation, the electrostatic repulsion between the charged groups provokes a heterogeneous polymer density profile, leading to a nanogel structure with an internal low density hole surrounded by a dense corona. The results show that the excluded-volume repulsion strongly hinders the ion permeation for shrunken nanogels, where volume exclusion is able to significantly reduce the concentration of counterions in the more dense regions of the nanogel. In general, we demonstrate that the thermosensitive behaviour of nanogels, as well as their internal structure, is strongly influenced by the valence of the counterions and also by the charge of the particles. On the one hand, an increase of the counterion valence moves the swelling transition to lower temperatures, and induces a major structuring of the charged monomers into internal and external layers around the crown for shrunken nanogels. ABSTRACT In this work, the influence of counterion valence and salt concentration on the effective charge of two types of thermoresponsive ionic microgel particles has been studied. The effective charge of the microgel at different swelling states has been experimentally determined from electrophoretic mobility measurements by solving the electrokinetic equations of the solvent for a single polyelectrolyte brush in the presence of an electric field, taking into account the friction of the solvent inside the polymer network. The experimental results have been compared to those obtained by means of the Ornstein-Zernike integral formalism within the HNC relation. Results show that microgel bare charge is screened by the combined effect of counterion condensation and permeation inside the microgel particle. In addition to the electrostatic interaction, the steric exclusion exerted by the polymer plays an important role on the local ionic concentrations, especially for shrunken configurations. This steric term is responsible for the strong increase of the microgel effective charge experimentally observed when particles shrink for temperatures above the lower critical solution temperature. We also observe that, in the internal region of the microgel, charge electroneutrality is fulfilled, so the effective charge mainly arises from the region close to the microgel surface. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this work a new density functional theory framework is developed to predict the salt-concentration dependent swelling state of charged microgels and the local concentration of monovalent ions inside and outside the microgel. For this purpose, elastic, solvent-induced and electrostatic contributions to the microgel free energy are considered together with the free energy of the ions. In addition to the electrostatic interaction, the model explicitly considers both the microgel–ion excluded-volume (steric) repulsion and the ionic correlations, in such a way that the formalism is consistent with the Hypernetted-Chain Closure approximation (HNC). We explore the role that the solvent quality, chain elasticity, salt concentration and microgel bare charge play on the swelling state, the effective charge and on the ionic density profiles. Our results show that the microgel–ion steric exclusion foments the increase of the particle size up to 10%. The role that the steric effect plays on the counterion distribution becomes more important when the microgel approaches the shrunken configuration, developing an accumulation peak at the microgel interface and a reduction in the inner core of the microgel that induce a significant increase of the microgel effective charge. We further find that deep inside the particle charge electroneutrality is achieved and a Donnan potential corrected by the steric exclusion is established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Irreversible adsorption of particles onto a flat surface as a consequence of sedimentation colloidal suspension has been studied by two simulation techniques: Brownian dynamics (BD) and stochastic rotation dynamics (SRD). The purpose of using both methods is to investigate the effect of hydrodynamic interactions on adsorption kinetics and structure of the first monolayer of sediment obtained from the sedimentation of a concentrated and monodisperse colloidal suspension. Three systems were studied, characterised by the Péclet numbers: 0.1, 1.0 and 10. To physically understand the kinetic behaviour, simulation results were analysed using a kinetic model based on chemical reactions. High values of jamming limit (θ∞> 0.61) were obtained for both simulation techniques, with the SRD showing the highest figures (0.631) due to the hydrodynamics effect that takes into account the fluid backflow produced on particle sedimentation. We explore the microstructure and phase behavior of confined soft colloids which can actively switch their interactions at a predefined kinetic rate. For this, we employ a reactive dynamical density-functional theory and study the effect of a two-state switching of the size of colloids interacting with a Gaussian pair potential in the nonequilibrium steady state. The switching rate interpolates between a near-equilibrium binary mixture at low rates and a nonequilibrium monodisperse liquid for large rates, strongly affecting the one-body density profiles, adsorption, and pressure at confining walls. Importantly, we show that sufficiently fast switching impedes the phase separation of an (in equilibrium) unstable liquid, allowing the control of the degree of mixing and condensation and local microstructuring in a cellular confinement by tuning the switching rate. Extensive numerical simulations of diffusion-limited (DLCA) and reaction-limited (RLCA) colloidal aggregation in two dimensions were performed to elucidate the concentration dependence of the cluster fractal dimension and of the different average cluster sizes. Both on-lattice and off-lattice simulations were used to check the independence of our results on the simulational algorithms and on the space structure. The range in concentration studied spanned 2.5 orders of magnitude. In the DLCA case and in the flocculation regime, it was found that the fractal dimension shows a linear-type increase with the concentration φ, following the law: df=dfo+aφc. For the on-lattice simulations the fractal dimension in the zero concentration limit, dfo, was 1.451±0.002, while for the off-lattice simulations the same quantity took the value 1.445±0.003. The prefactor a and exponent c were for the on-lattice simulations equal to 0.633±0.021 and 1.046±0.032, while for the off-lattice simulations they were 1.005±0.059 and 0.999±0.045, respectively. For the exponents z and z′, defining the increase of the weight-average (Sw(t)) and number-average (Sn(t)) cluster sizes as a function of time, we obtained in the DLCA case the laws: z=zo+bφd and z′=z′o+b′φd′. For the on-lattice simulations, zo, b, and d were equal to 0.593±0.008, 0.696±0.068, and 0.485±0.048, respectively, while for the off-lattice simulations they were 0.595±0.005, 0.807±0.093, and 0.599±0.051. In the case of the exponent z′, the quantities z′o, b′, and d′ were, for the on-lattice simulations, equal to 0.615±0.004, 0.814±0.081, and 0.620±0.043, respectively, while for the off-lattice algorithm they took the values 0.598±0.002, 0.855±0.035, and 0.610±0.018. In RLCA we have found again that the fractal dimension, in the flocculation regime, shows a similar linear-type increase with the concentration df=dfo+aφc, with dfo=1.560±0.004, a=0.342±0.039, and c=1.000±0.112. In this RLCA case it was not possible to find a straight line in the log–log plots of Sw(t) and Sn(t) in the aggregation regime considered, and no exponents z and z′ were defined. We argue however that for sufficiently long periods of time the cluster averages should tend to those for DLCA and, therefore, their exponents should coincide with z and z′ of the DLCA case. Finally, we present the bell-shaped master curves for the scaling of the cluster size distribution function and their evolution when the concentration increases, for both the DLCA and RLCA cases. We investigate the rheological properties of interpenetrating networks reconstituted from the main cytoskeletal components: filamentous actin, microtubules, and vimentin intermediate filaments. The elastic modulus is determined largely by actin, with little contribution from either microtubules or vimentin. However, vimentin dramatically impacts the relaxation, with even small amounts significantly increasing the relaxation time of the interpenetrating network. This highly unusual decoupling between dissipation and elasticity may reflect weak attractive interactions between vimentin and actin networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, electrostatic forces between charged nanogels are explored through coarse-grained simulations. These simulations allow us to explicitly consider the complex topology of these nanoparticles and provide reliable force values to examine highly charged nanogels of a few tens of nanometers. The results obtained here clearly reveal that the electrostatic interactions between these nanoparticles are not governed by the net charge of the nanogel, which includes not only the charge of the polymer network but also the charge of ions inside. Thus two theoretical procedures for predicting effective charges are also proposed and investigated.
