A system of qualification options has evolved that is complementary to company-based and school-based vocational training. Thus far, these alternatives have been largely disregarded by vocational education research. Yet with respect to the number of annual entries, those alternatives are currently nearly as significant as conventional vocational training. However, the question remains still unanswered if those alternatives are to be regarded as opportunities or rather as risk factors in respect of the vocational training or occupational integration of youth entering it. Based on a longitudinal study, the German Youth Institute's so-called "transition panel" about the causes and effects of educational and vocational training-related pathways upon the occupational integration of young people leaving Hauptschule, the article aims at further investigation of the functions of those alternatives with regard to the integration into vocational training over the course of time. V-band clamp joints are used in a wide range of applications to connect circular flanges, for ducts, pipes and the turbocharger housing. Previous studies and research on V-bands are either purely empirical or analytical with limited applicability on the variety of V-band design and working conditions. In this paper models of the V-band are developed based on the classical theory of solid mechanics and the finite element method to study the behaviour of theV-bands under axial loading conditions. The good agreement between results from the developed FEA and the classical model support the suitability of the latter to modelV-band joints with diameters greater than 110mm under axial loading. The results from both models suggest that the axial stiffness for thisV-band cross section reaches a peak value for V-bands with radius of approximately 150 mmacross a wide range of coefficients of friction. Also, it is shown that the coefficient of friction and the wedge angle have a significant effect on the axial stiffness of V-bands.

Allergic asthma is characterized by a strong Th2 response with inflammatory cell recruitment and structural changes in the lung. Papain is a protease allergen disrupting the airway epithelium triggering a rapid inflammation with eosinophilia mediated by innate lymphoid cell activation (ILC2) and leading to a Th2 immune response. In this study, we focused on inflammatory responses to a single exposure to papain and showed that intranasal administration of papain results in the recruitment of inflammatory cells, including neutrophils and eosinophils with a rapid production of IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-33. The inflammatory response is abrogated in the absence of IL-1R1 and MyD88. To decipher the cell type(s) involved in MyD88-dependent IL-1R1/MyD88 signaling, we used new cell-specific MyD88-deficient mice and found that the deletion of MyD88 signaling in single cell types such as T cells, epithelial cells, CD11c-positive or myeloid cells leads to only a partial inhibition compared to complete absence of MyD88, suggesting that several cell types contribute to the response. Importantly, the inflammatory response is largely ST2 and IL-36R independent. In conclusion, IL-1R1 signaling via MyD88 is critical for the first step of inflammatory response to papain. The role and effect of stable Ce^4+ centers in Ce-doped LuAG single crystal scintillator is further studied by means of measurements of several optical, luminescence and scintillation characteristics. Two LuAG:Ce single crystal samples are compared: in one of them the dominating Ce^4 + center is stabilized by high concentration Mg^2+ codoping while the other one shows only the presence of stable Ce^3 + center. Tailored (Eu, Mg)–doped LuAG single crystal is also prepared to test the presence and thermal stability of hole traps in the host which affect the timing characteristics of Ce^4+ scintillation cycle, namely its restoration back to 4+ charge state in last step of the cycle. EPR experiment was also employed at Mg- and (Eu, Mg) doped LuAG samples and the signature of the O^ - hole center stabilized by Mg^2 + ion was clearly obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a new method to simulate large scale water phenomena by combining particle, 3D grid and height field methods. In contrast to most hybrid approaches that use particles to simulate foam and spray only, we also represent the bulk of water near the surface with both particles and a grid depending on the regions of interest and switch between those two representations during the course of the simulation. For the coupling we leverage the recent idea of tracking the water surface with a density field in grid based methods. Combining particles and a grid simulation then amounts to adding the density field of the particles and the one stored on the grid. For open scenes, we simulate the water outside of the 3D grid domain by solving the Shallow Water Equations on a height field. We propose new methods to couple these two domains such that waves travel naturally across the border. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in various scenarios including a whale breaching simulation, all running in real-time or at interactive rates. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We present a GPU friendly, Eulerian, free surface fluid simulation method that conserves mass locally and globally without the use of Lagrangian components. Local mass conservation prevents small-scale details of the free surface from disappearing, a problem that plagues many previous approaches, while global mass conservation ensures that the total volume of the liquid does not decrease over time. Our method handles moving solid boundaries as well as cells that are partially filled with solids. Due to its stability, it allows the use of large time steps that makes it suitable for both offline and real-time applications. We achieve this by using density-based surface tracking with a novel, unconditionally stable, conservative advection scheme. We also propose mass conserving methods to sharpen the interface and to reveal subgrid features of the liquid. While our approach conserves mass, volume loss is still possible but only temporarily. With constant mass, local volume loss causes a local increase of the density used for surface tracking which we detect and correct over time. Objective: To compare the psychometric properties of the Calgary Depression Rating Scale (CDRS) and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) for severity assessment of depression in acute schizophrenia. Method: During clinical routine treatment, we investigated 119 inpatients with acute schizophrenia, using the CDRS, the HDRS, and a global 4-point Depression Severity Scale (DEP-SEV). We compared CDRS and HDRS sum scores regarding their diagnostic accuracy, with global severity of depression as the criterion. We estimated sensitivity and specificity on the basis of receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: According to global clinical ratings (DEP-SEV), 31% of patients had no depression, 19% had mild, 31% had moderate, and 19% had severe depression. Sensitivity was significantly higher (P < 0.05) for the CDRS than for the HDRS to assess mild (0.94 vs 0.76, cut-off 3 vs 10 points) or severe depression (1.00 vs 0.78, cut-off 11 vs 22 points); specificity was comparably high (20.88) for both scales. Conclusion: Despite the fact that both scales were effective in separating mild, moderate, and severe depression, significant advantages emerged for the CDRS to detect mild or severe depression in schizophrenia. Synchronized neural activity in the frequency range above 20 Hz, the gamma-band, has been proposed as a signature of temporal feature binding. Here we suggest that selective attention facilitates synchronization of neural activity. Selective attention can be guided by bottom-up, stimulus driven, or top-down task-driven processes. Both processes will cause that stimuli are processed preferentially. While bottom-up processes might facilitate synchronization of neurons due to the salience of the stimulus, top-down processes may bias information selection by facilitating synchronization of neurons coding a certain location in space and/or of neurons related to the processing of certain features.
