Background: The LUX-Dx™ is a novel insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) introduced into the European market since October 2022. Purpose: The aim of this investigation was to provide a comprehensive description of the ICM implantation experience in Europe during its initial year of commercial use. Methods: The system comprises an incision tool and a single-piece insertion tool pre-loaded with the small ICM. The implantation procedure involves incision, creation of a device pocket, insertion of the ICM, verification of sensing, and incision closure. Patients receive a mobile device with a preloaded App, connecting to their ICM and transmitting data to the management system. Data collected at European centers were analyzed at the time of implantation and before patient discharge. Results: A total of 368 implantation procedures were conducted across 23 centers. Syncope (235, 64%) and cryptogenic stroke (34, 9%) were the most frequent indications for ICM. Most procedures (338, 92%) were performed in electrophysiology laboratories. All ICMs were successfully implanted in the left parasternal region, oriented at 45° in 323 (88%) patients. Repositioning was necessary after sensing verification in 9 (2%) patients. No procedural complications were reported, with a median time from skin incision to suture of 4 min (25th–75th percentiles 2–7). At implantation, the mean R-wave amplitude was 0.39 ± 0.30 mV and the P-wave visibility was 91 ± 20%. Sensing parameters remained stable until pre-discharge and were not influenced by patient characteristics or indications. Procedural times were fast, exhibited consistency across patient groups, and improved after an initial experience with the system. Operator Operator feedback on the system was positive. Patients reported very good ease of use of the App and low levels of discomfort after implantation. Conclusions: LUX-Dx™ implantation appears efficient and straightforward, with favorable post-implantation sensing values and associated with positive feedback from operators and patients. Global changes push to set up strategies able to mitigate and adapt agricultural and forest crops to environmental variability, and the sustainable intensification of production processes under agricultural and forestry systems is one of the approaches mainly supported. In Italy biomass and biogas are the renewable energy sources that have shown the greatest potential for growth in recent years. In this context, during the XV National Congress held in Bolzano in February 2018, the Italian Association of Agricultural Scientific Societies has promoted an analysis about potential and limits of the sustainable intensification of agricultural and forestry systems for bioenergy production. This document reports the outcome, in the form of a commented discussion on the main evidences and proposals from technical-scientific and operational points of view.

Since the last 50 years, areas where beech coppices remain unmanaged are increasing in Italy. In more recent years some of these coppices underwent conversion to high-forest. Little information exists on the consequences of this management choice for ecosystem properties, such as soil organic matter and soil humic substances. This study consists in a quantitative and qualitative characterization of soil organic matter as a function of different management and pedoclimatic conditions in beech coppices in Trentino, Northern Italy. The study was conducted in four beech coppices, two calcicolous mesic typical beech forests and two calcicolous xeric beech forests. For each forest type we selected one unmanaged coppice (over the last 40 years) and one coppice stand converted to high forest by releasing a limited number of standards. The qualitative features of humic substances were examined through gel-filtration and Diffuse Reflectance Infra Red Spectroscopy. Results show that the two types of forest respond in a different way to the conversion treatment. In mesic beech forest, humification parameters appear to slow down after silvicultural treatment; in xeric beech forest, a stronger polycondensation of humic compounds was observed after the silvicultural treatment.

Aims: To evaluate the outcome of surgical management of entropion of the upper and lower eyelids in Shar Pei dogs which had previously undergone temporary palpebral tacking, using the Stades forced granulation procedure of the upper eyelid only. Methods: Medical records were retrospectively searched to identify Shar Pei dogs referred for bilateral entropion of both the lower and upper eyelids, and that were treated with the forced granulation procedure of the upper eyelid only. Dogs were included if they had previously undergone unsuccessful temporary palpebral tacking and had at least three follow-up examinations in the 30 days following surgery. Results: Twenty-seven Shar Pei dogs with a median age of 7.9 (min 4, max 24) months were included in the study. Before surgery, all dogs showed signs of severe ocular discomfort with bilateral keratitis and visual deficit due to blepharospasm, enophthalmos and protrusion of the third eyelid. In 13/54 eyes, keratitis was associated with a corneal ulcer. When re-examined 4 weeks after surgery, correction of the upper eyelid entropion and associated trichiasis resolved ocular signs in 50/54 eyes. Mild bilateral lower entropion remained in two dogs postoperatively, which underwent revision surgery with the Hotz-Celsus technique. There were no cases of long-term recurrence of entropion or ocular irritation in the 38 eyes (19 dogs) which were re-examined 1 year after surgery. Conclusion and clinical relevance: The forced granulation procedure performed on the upper eyelid only was effective for correction of entropion in the Shar Pei dogs included in this study. In our experience, it is preferable to operate on the upper eyelid alone, rather than attempting to correct upper and lower entropion during the same surgical operation. The dog can then be reassessed a few weeks later to determine whether the lower entropion is anatomical or secondary to the severe blepharospasm resulting from the painful ocular irritation. The characterization of nutrient and biostimulant effects in crops is complex and needs rigorous evaluations. In this study, we evaluated morphological and molecular responses induced by microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus quadricauda) extracts in Beta vulgaris L. The two microalgae extracts were firstly characterized by CNS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis (FT-IR), and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). Seedlings were grown in Hoagland’s solution under controlled conditions. After 5 days of growth, 2 mL L−1 (1 mg Corg L−1) and 4 mL L−1 (2 mg Corg L−1) of the two microalgae extracts were added to the Hoagland solution. Roots were sampled 36 h after treatments. Inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP-OES) and nanofluidic real-time PCR (OpenArray system) were used for sample profiling. Fifty-three sugar beet genes putatively involved in sulfate starvation were tested in treated and untreated samples. Root morphological traits were measured by means of a scanner-based image analysis system. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed no significant changes in the ionomic profile of Hoagland’s solutions treated with the two microalgae extracts with respect to that of the untreated solution. At the molecular level, microalgae extract supplies upregulated many of the evaluated genes. Functional categorization revealed these genes to be related to various biological pathways and processes including primary and secondary metabolism and intracellular transport. At the morphological level, the treated seedlings showed significantly higher values for root traits related to soil exploration and nutrient uptake, such as total root length, fine root length (diameter < 0.5 mm), and number of root tips, than the untreated plants. These data indicate that microalgae extracts have biostimulant effects on the expression of root traits and genes related to nutrient acquisition in sugar beet. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To validate a shortened version of the Participation Scale (P-scale) that will be quicker to use and to describe the factor structure found in the P-scale data in various study samples. Methods: A large multi-country and multi-cultural database was compiled consisting of 5125 respondents. Item analysis, explanatory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were applied to identify items for deletion and investigate the factor structure of the P-scale. Results: The multi-country database included 11 databases from six different countries. Respondents were affected by a range of health conditions, including leprosy, HIV/AIDS, dermatological conditions and various disabilities. Of the respondents included 57% were male. The P-scale Short (PSS) contains 13 items. A two-factor structure, with factors named 'work-related participation' (three items) and 'general participation' (10 items), showed the best model fit (Comparative Fit Index = 0.983, Tucker Lewis Index = 0.979, Rooted Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.061). The Cronbach's alphas were very good for both the whole scale and the subscales, 0.91, 0.83 and 0.90, respectively. Correlation between the two factors was high (r = 0.75) indicating that interpreting the P-scale as measuring an overall factor 'participation' is still valid. A very high correlation ( r = 0.99) was found between the full P-scale and the PSS. Conclusions:The findings suggest good validity of the P-scale across a range of languages and cultures. Humic substances (HS) have positive effects on plant physiology, but the molecular mechanisms underlying these events are only partially understood. HS exert auxin-like activity, but data supporting this hypothesis are under debate. To investigate the auxin-like activity of HS, we studied their biological effect on lateral root initiation in Arabidopsis thaliana. To this aim we characterised HS by means of DRIFT and 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy, and measured their endogenous content of IAA. We then utilised a combination of genetic and molecular approaches to unravel HS auxin activity in the initiation of lateral roots. The data obtained using specific inhibitors of auxin transport or action showed that HS induce lateral root formation mostly through their 'auxin activity'. These findings were further supported by the fact that HS used in this study activated the auxin synthetic reporter DR5::GUS and enhanced transcription of the early auxin responsive gene IAA19. Plants have evolved with roots in close con tad with the solid phase of the soil. Therefore, root exudates may be a better medium for extracting low molecular size (LMS) organic fractions than currently used alkaline solutions. Our objective was to compare the chemical and biological activity of LMS extracts using maize (Zea mays L.), Picea abies, and Pin us sylvestris root exudates to humic substances (HS) extracted with alkaline solution. Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric (GC/MS) spectra revealed that the LMS fractions had a greater variety of fatty acids than the HS. Fourier transform infrared (ET-IR) spectra of LMS fractions also indicated different amounts of functional groups by comparison with HS. The possible biological role of LMS fractions with respect to HS was assessed by measuring hormone-like activity and nitrate uptake in P. sylvestris seedlings. The LMS fractions from agricultural soil stimulated nitrate uptake and nitrate reductase (NR) and glutamine synthetase (GS) activities, whereas those from a forest soil increased ammonium uptake, NR, and glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) activities. The stimulation of nitrate and ammonium uptake via a NR-GS or NR-GDH metabolic pattern was consistent with the different chemical composition of the LMS fractions. The inhibitory action of four herbicides (atrazine, dalapon, moiinate, propanil) on the membrane transport of sulfate by excised roots was evaluated in tolerant (Oryza saliva) and susceptible (Pisam sativum, Hordeum vulgare) cultivated species, and in a tolerant and susceptible variety of a weed (Brassica rapa). A parallelism between the response of the root transport activity and the general response of the genotype was ascertained, irrespective of the metabolic target of the herbicide. The inhibition mechanism of sulfate uptake was either competitive, non competitive, or uncompetitive, but this aspect was not correlated with the response of the genotype to the herbicide. The kinetics of absorption 14C atrazine by excised roots and by chloroplasts of Brassica rapa were strictly related: the amount of atrazine binding to roots and to chloroplasts was higher in the susceptible than in the resistant variety. The Sevel of atrazine inhibition of sulfate transport in roots was correlated to that of the Hill reaction; both were higher in the susceptible variety. The membrane transport within the roots appears to summarize and anticipate the metabolic response of genotypes to herbicides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vancomycin concentrations in periprosthetic breast tissues were evaluated in 24 women undergoing reconstructive surgery after mastectomy for breast cancer. Patients were given a single prophylactic dose of vancomycin (1 g iv) 1–8 h before surgery, and mean capsular and pericapsular tissue concentrations were measured by HPLC. Vancomycin was not detectable in the majority of patients belonging to the 1–3 h post-dose groups, whereas in the 4–8 h post-dose groups, mean capsular and pericapsular concentrations were as follows: at 4 h, 4.0 mg/kg and 5.9 mg/kg; at 6 h, 4.1 mg/kg and 4.8 mg/kg; at 8 h, 5.9 mg/kg and 11.1 mg/kg, respectively. Vancomycin tissue concentrations thus were equal to or exceeded the breakpoint of 4 mg/L in most samples collected 4–8 h after dosing. In conclusion, our data suggest that appropriate timing of vancomycin prophylaxis should be considered to allow the maintenance of adequate tissue concentrations throughout the surgical procedure. Deciding on which phytosanitary emergency measures shall be applied in a delimited area is associated with many difficulties. Compulsory measures may strongly affect citizens, municipalities, nurseries and other third parties involved. Studies carried out in the Marche region (Central-Eastern Italy) during 2007-10 aimed to limit the spread of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (red palm weevil) in a demarcated area, according to EU Decision 2007/365/EC. The efficacy of several tools, which may be included into an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy for R. ferrugineus control (pest survey, mass trapping, integrated approach based on spherical pruning plus application of chemical insecticides and biological control agents for curative treatment of already infested plants) was evaluated. All methods tested proved to be promising tools for IPM of R. ferrugineus.
