Abstract Planar lamination is a ubiquitous component of modern and ancient fine‐grained sediments deposited by subaqueous sediment gravity flows. These sediments commonly exhibit alternating sub‐millimetre‐thick, sharply bounded silt‐rich and clay‐rich layers that change little in thickness or sediment texture over lateral distances that range up to at least several tens of metres. Silt‐rich layers are moderately to well‐sorted and a few tens to hundreds of microns to a single silt‐grain thick. In contrast, clay‐rich layers are more poorly sorted, and a few tens to hundreds of microns thick. The thickness and regular alternation of these texturally differentiated interlayers, in addition to the absence of features suggesting transport bypass or deposition by migrating rugged bed forms, suggest alternating physical processes and related modes of deposition in the near‐bed region immediately above the bed. Previous interpretations have focussed on clay flocculation, which is difficult to reconcile with the high fluid shear conditions in the near‐bed region. Here it is suggested that in the millimetre to sub‐millimetre‐thick viscous sublayer at the base of a hydraulically smooth turbulent flow, a combination of high fluid shear and sediment concentration initially leads to shear thinning and enhanced mobility in the lower part of the flow, and for silt to continue settling to the bed forming a well‐sorted silt lamina. As silt settles and clay‐size sediment increases in concentration, hydrodynamic lubrication forces strengthen and reduce mobility of the near‐bed part of the flow. This condition is then perturbed by a bedward‐directed outer flow disturbance that dramatically increases frictional stresses and effective fluid viscosity and ultimately shear jamming that causes gelling and deposition of a poorly sorted clay‐rich layer. This process is then repeated multiple times to build up a deposit composed of alternating silt‐rich and clay‐rich laminae overlain by structureless mud deposited directly from suspension.

Artificial-intelligence and machine-learning (AI/ML) approaches to predicting T-cell receptor (TCR)-epitope specificity achieve high performance metrics on test datasets which include sequences that are also part of the training set but fail to generalize to test sets consisting of epitopes and TCRs that are absent from the training set, i.e., are ‘unseen’ during training of the ML model. We present TCR-H, a supervised classification Support Vector Machines model using physicochemical features trained on the largest dataset available to date using only experimentally validated non-binders as negative datapoints. TCR-H exhibits an area under the curve of the receiver-operator characteristic (AUC of ROC) of 0.87 for epitope ‘hard splitting’ (i.e., on test sets with all epitopes unseen during ML training), 0.92 for TCR hard splitting and 0.89 for ‘strict splitting’ in which neither the epitopes nor the TCRs in the test set are seen in the training data. Furthermore, we employ the SHAP (Shapley additive explanations) eXplainable AI (XAI) method for post hoc interrogation to interpret the models trained with different hard splits, shedding light on the key physiochemical features driving model predictions. TCR-H thus represents a significant step towards general applicability and explainability of epitope:TCR specificity prediction.

Objective Skull base chordoma and chondrosarcoma are distinct sarcomas of the skull base but share significant therapeutic challenges due to their proximity to critical neurovascular structures, making surgical resection difficult. We sought to establish factors associated with outcome predictors in a national cohort of patients.Methods and analysis Data for all patients referred with a diagnosis of skull base chordoma or chondrosarcoma from April 2017 to December 2022 were obtained. We performed analyses of data pertaining to the first cohort of patients treated in the UK with proton beam therapy (PBT) to determine factors associated with obtaining gross total resection (GTR) and adequate clearance of the brainstem and optic apparatus.Results Of 230 patients with skull base chordoma or chondrosarcoma referred for PBT, 71% were accepted for PBT, with a wide regional variation between referring neurosurgical units (29%–93%). Of the first 75 consecutive patients treated with PBT, the only factor predictive of obtaining GTR was surgical resection at a unit with higher volumes of patients accepted for PBT (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.63, p=0.004). Use of intraoperative MRI (OR 4.84, 95% CI 1.21 to 27.83, p=0.04) and resection at a higher volume unit (OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.64, p=0.013) were associated with increased rates of tumour clearance from the brainstem/optic apparatus.Conclusions Treatment at a higher volume centre was a key determinant of the optimal surgical outcome in this cohort. These data support the management of skull base chordomas and chondrosarcomas in higher volume centres where multidisciplinary experience can be accumulated.

BackgroundBrucellosis is a bacterial zoonotic infection that is endemic in Saudi Arabia and associated with clinical and economic impacts. Several studies from countries endemic for brucellosis evaluated the knowledge and attitude of livestock farmers regarding brucellosis. However, no such study was conducted in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of livestock farmers and meat handlers in Saudi Arabia.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study, where participants were interviewed in-person in Arabic in livestock markets between September–December 2023. Convenient sampling was utilized. The questionnaire included basic demographics and questions to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice toward personal protection and protection of the animals from brucellosis. The questionnaire was adapted from a previously validated survey and included 59 questions. Providing at least one correct answer to a certain question indicated a good knowledge about this item or a safe practice. The participants were divided into: farmers (shepherds working for the animal owners), commercial animal owners (those who rent a stockyard in the livestock market and employ farmers to sell their animals), and private animal owners (owners of private farms from which they sell their animals).Results545 participants were interviewed (n = 291 farmers, n = 118 commercial animal owners, n = 113 private animal owners, and n = 23 animal slaughterhouse workers). >90% have heard of brucellosis. Abstract A key limitation of current dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI techniques is the requirement for full-dose gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) administration. The purpose of this feasibility study was to develop and assess a new low GBCA dose protocol for deriving high-spatial resolution kinetic parameters from brain DCE-MRI. Nineteen patients with intracranial skull base tumours were prospectively imaged at 1.5 T using a single-injection, fixed-volume low GBCA dose, dual temporal resolution interleaved DCE-MRI acquisition. The accuracy of kinetic parameters (ve, Ktrans, vp) derived using this new low GBCA dose technique was evaluated through both Monte-Carlo simulations (mean percent deviation, PD, of measured from true values) and an in vivo study incorporating comparison with a conventional full-dose GBCA protocol and correlation with histopathological data. Social media influencers have become important motivators in shaping tourist attitudes and behaviors. This study analyzed how exposure to influencer content impacts key outcomes for the destination Jordan. A survey of tourists who visited Jordan in the past 3 years measured their perceptions of influencer credibility, content quality, awareness/interest, trust/engagement, destination image, general tourism behavior, and intentions to revisit. Results of SEM analysis found significant positive effects of influencer marketing on both destination image and visit intentions. Awareness/interest and trust/engagement were most impactful, highlighting influencers' role in sparking early motivation. Content quality additionally predicted visit intentions by informing decisions. Perceived credibility made recommendations more persuasive. Furthermore, usage intensity positively moderated the mediated relationships, amplifying effects among heavy social media users. Findings provide theoretical validation of how influencers act as digital opinion leaders. By enhancing destination image through compelling portrayals, influencers shape audience travel interests and behaviors. Managerial implications suggest destinations should invest in influencer campaigns for reach and inspiration while ensuring content quality. Performance tracking informs optimal platform and demographic targeting. Overall, influencer marketing demonstrated significant persuasive appeal for potential tourists. This quantitative study pioneer’s measurement of influencer marketing's tangible impacts on key tourist metrics. The results empirically substantiate the ability of strategically leverage influencers to motivate visitation and guide decision-making. As practitioners refine partnerships for audience growth and branding, academic research must also advance a nuanced understanding of this emerging phenomenon at the confluence of social media and tourism consumer behavior.

Abstract Poor dietary intake of vitamin B12 and folate before and during pregnancy has been associated with adverse birth outcomes. This relationship has not been rigorously evaluated in Tanzania. We performed secondary analyses of data collected during the perinatal study, a double‐blind trial that investigated the effect of vitamin supplements on perinatal outcomes in Tanzania between 2001 and 2004. In this analysis, we used log‐binomial models to investigate the adequacy of vitamin B12 and folate intake among 7633 mothers and the association of vitamin B12 and folate intake during pregnancy with low birth weight, preterm birth (PTB), small for gestational age and foetal death. Sixty‐seven percent of women had vitamin B12 intake below the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) of 2.6 mcg for pregnant women, and 98% of women had folate intake below the RDA of 600 mcg for pregnant women. Compared with women in the lowest tertile of vitamin B12 intake women in the highest tertile were 26% less likely to have PTB (relative risk [RR] = 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.65, 0.84) and 36% less likely to have severe PTB (RR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.50, 0.83). Compared with women in the lowest tertile of folate intake women in the highest tertile were 21% less likely to have PTB (RR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69, 0.89) and 21% less likely to have severe PTB (RR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.69, 0.89). The provision of an adequate supply of these nutrients before and during pregnancy would improve pregnancy outcomes in Tanzania.

Background Little is known about treatment variability across US hospitals for patients with chronic limb‐threatening ischemia (CLTI). Methods and Results Data were collected from the 2016 to 2018 National Inpatient Sample. All patients aged ≥18 years, admitted to nonfederal US hospitals with a primary diagnosis of CLTI, were identified. Patients were classified according to their clinical presentation (rest pain, skin ulceration, or gangrene) and were further characterized according to the treatment strategy used. The primary outcome of interest was variability in CLTI treatment, as characterized by the median odds ratio. The median odds ratio is defined as the likelihood that 2 similar patients would be treated with a given modality at 1 versus another randomly selected hospital. There were 15 896 (weighted n=79 480) hospitalizations identified where CLTI was the primary diagnosis. Medical therapy alone, endovascular revascularization ± amputation, surgical revascularization ± amputation, and amputation alone were used in 4057 (25%), 5390 (34%), 3733 (24%), and 2716 (17%) patients, respectively. After adjusting for both patient‐ and hospital‐related factors, the median odds ratio (95% CI) for medical therapy alone, endovascular revascularization ± amputation, surgical revascularization ± amputation, any revascularization, and amputation alone were 1.28 (1.19–1.38), 1.86 (1.77–1.95), 1.65 (1.55–1.74), 1.37 (1.28–1.45), and 1.42 (1.27–1.55), respectively. Conclusions Significant variability in CLTI treatment exists across US hospitals and is not fully explained by patient or hospital characteristics.

The present study was undertaken to study the effect of apigenin and luteolin on physiological and histological changes in rats treated with cytarabine drugs. Thirty-five albino healthy male adult rats with equal age weighing 250 -300g were enrolled. Rats were randomly divided into seven groups according to the treatment. Group “1” was treated with normal saline and served as the control group. Groups “2,3 and 4” received cytarabine, apigenin, and luteolin respectively, while groups 5, 6, and 7 received a combination of “apigenin + cytarabine”, “luteolin + cytarabine”, and “apigenin + luteolin + cytarabine”, respectively. After one week of treatment, all seven groups of rats were sacrificed for histological finding, and blood samples were collected from each rat for biochemical parameters analysis. The results of this study showed that cytarabine increased the activity of GPT, GOT, and cholesterol levels in rats after one week of intraperitoneal injection in comparison to the control. There was no significant difference in GPT and GOT when apigenin and luteolin were administrated orally compared to the control group. When apigenin and luteolin are combined with cytarabine, they have a protective effect on leakage of liver enzymes GPT and GOT in serum. Apigenin and luteolin histologically protect liver cells from cytarabine damage when administered alone. These findings conclude that apigenin and luteolin have a protective effect on cytarabine side effects on the liver and its function in rats.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects more than 2.5 million people in the U.S. each year and is the leading cause of death and disability in children and adults ages 1 to 44. Approximately 90% of TBI cases are classified as mild but may still lead to acute detrimental effects such as impaired cerebral blood flow (CBF) that result in prolonged impacts on brain function and quality of life in up to 15% of patients. We previously reported that nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) peptide (NOP) receptor antagonism reversed mild blast TBI-induced vestibulomotor deficits and prevented hypoxia. To explore mechanisms by which the NOP receptor-N/OFQ pathway modulates hypoxia and other TBI sequelae, the ability of the NOP antagonist, SB-612111 (SB), to reverse TBI-induced CBF and associated injury marker changes were tested in this study. Male Wistar rats randomly received sham craniotomy or craniotomy + TBI via controlled cortical impact. Injury severity was assessed after 1 h (modified neurological severity score (mNSS). Changes in CBF were assessed 2 h post-injury above the exposed cortex using laser speckle contrast imaging in response to the direct application of increasing concentrations of vehicle or SB (1, 10, and 100 µM) to the brain surface. TBI increased mNSS scores compared to baseline and confirmed mild TBI (mTBI) severity. CBF was significantly impaired on the ipsilateral side of the brain following mTBI, compared to contralateral side and to sham rats. SB dose-dependently improved CBF on the ipsilateral side after mTBI compared to SB effects on the respective ipsilateral side of sham rats but had no effect on contralateral CBF or in uninjured rats. N/OFQ levels increased in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) following mTBI, which correlated with the percent decrease in ipsilateral CBF. TBI also activated ERK and cofilin within 3 h post-TBI; ERK activation correlated with increased CSF N/OFQ. In conclusion, this study reveals a significant contribution of the N/OFQ-NOP receptor system to TBI-induced dysregulation of cerebral vasculature and suggests that the NOP receptor should be considered as a potential therapeutic target for TBI.

Objectives In developing countries, the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) has not been incorporated into the national immunization schedule, and the vaccination rate is low. This study aimed to examine parental knowledge, attitudes, and barriers to children receiving the PCV in Jordan. Methods This was a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study. The online survey was written in Arabic and consisted of three main sections. The questionnaire was distributed via social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Results In total, 720 responses were analyzed. Only 149 (20.7%) of the parents’ children were vaccinated with the PCV. However, almost half 356 (49.4%) of the respondents were willing to vaccinate their children. Most (563, 78.1%) parents stated that the vaccine would protect their children from pneumococcal disease. More than two thirds (516, 71.6%) of them strongly agreed or agreed that the cost of the PCV is high. Parents who had vaccinated their children had a higher monthly income than parents who had not vaccinated their children. Conclusions This study shows a lack of knowledge regarding pneumococcal infection and the PCV among Jordanian parents. This is the main barrier to vaccinating children. Therefore, improving parental knowledge would increase the rate of vaccination among Jordanian children.

Background: Most primary Health Care Centers (PHCCs) in Iraq have a referral system records; however, this mechanism does not function well because of the lack of other requirements for an efficient referral system. Objective: To assess the practice & opinion of doctors in PHCs toward the referral system, and to determine the doctors in PHC's commitment to referral system instructions and guidelines. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study with analytic elements was conducted in nine health directorates in Iraq, from the 1st October 2018 – 30th June 2019.One PHC was selected randomly form each sector in every governorate, A questionnaire was used to collect the required information. SPSS version 24 analysis was used for the statistical analysis. Results: sixty-three doctors were working in PHCs had participated in the current study, the mean age (40.03 ±10.24), 58.7%were female, 46% were general practitioner, 30.2% of the participated doctors had 300 and less patient/month; 31.7% of doctors had ≤10 Patients referred/month, emergencies was the main cause for referral (46.03%), and 37(58.37%) of doctors announced that the referred-form not retrained to the PHC, and ever retrained-forms had no feedback 29(46%), 28(44%)of the participated doctors agreed that the current referral-system was effective and seven of them strongly agreed, 59(93.7%) believe in the importance of hospital-feedback, with a significant relationship between their attitude about the effective-current-referral system & Refer cases Percentage, while no significant-relation with their Patients examined/month. Loaded crowded and hospital doctors shortage as possible causes and suggest to referral-system activation especially the hospital -part". Conclusions: there was inadequate knowledge of referral-policies and lack of coordination or/and clear feedback-expectations and PHCs-hospitals collaboration and lack of referral-system integrated within an electronic-health-record.

Abstract Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an established, effective therapy against vestibular schwannoma (VS). The mechanisms of tumour response are, however, unknown and in this study we sought to evaluate changes in the irradiated VS tumour microenvironment through a multinuclear MRI approach. Five patients with growing sporadic VS underwent a multi-timepoint comprehensive MRI protocol, which included diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI and a spiral 23Na-MRI acquisition for total sodium concentration (TSC) quantification. Post-treatment voxelwise changes in TSC, DTI metrics and DCE-MRI derived microvascular biomarkers (Ktrans, ve and vp) were evaluated and compared against pre-treatment values. Changes in tumour TSC and microvascular parameters were observable as early as 2 weeks post-treatment, preceding changes in structural imaging. Type II intestinal failure (IF-II) is a condition in which the gastrointestinal tract is compromised. Liver complications may occur because of the pathology and/or prolonged use of parenteral nutrition (PN); oxidative stress has been implicated as one of the causes. Lipid emulsions containing n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been proposed for the treatment. We aimed to evaluate the effect of 7-day n-3 PUFA supplementation on oxidative stress in IF-II patients receiving PN. This was a randomized, controlled, double-blinded, pilot trial of adult patients with IF-II, receiving either conventional PN (control) or PN enriched with n-3 PUFAs (intervention). Twenty patients were included (14 men, 49 ± 16.9 years), with the ANCOVA analysis the glucose (p = 0.003), and direct bilirubin (p = 0.001) levels reduced; whereas the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) increased (p = 0.017). In the random-effect linear regression analysis, a reduction (p < 0.0001) in the malondialdehyde (MDA) level was found in the intervention group when the covariables age, HDL-C level, and alanine aminotransferase activity were considered. After 1 week of PN supplementation with n-3 PUFAs, the marker levels of some oxidative stress, blood lipids, and hepatic biomarkers improved in patients with IF-II.

This study was carried out at three locations (Laboratory of Plant Tissue Culture, Fields of the College of Agriculture, University of Diyala and one of the private nursery at the city of Baqubah. The applied experiments included two separate experiments on the scion Mandarin Clementine micro grafted on Sour orange rootstock. The first micro grafting experiment aimed to develop a method of vegetative propagation of Clementine and transferring the micro grafts from a laboratory to the field and comparing grafting dates (spring, early autumn, late autumn) with the laboratory grafting after treating grafting region with different concentrations of gibberellin (0, 0.3 or 0.4 mg. L-1). The effect of grafting dates on the percentages of success of grafted plants after one month of acclimatization. The experiment was carried out according to completely randomized design (CRD) as a factorial experiment with two factors and three replications for the first one, and as a single factor experiment with three replicates for the second experiment. Results showed a decline in the percentage of success of the grafting and a slight success correlated with increased gibberellin concentration in the aforementioned experiment at early fall grafting. A second field experiment, was conducted with the aim of studying the success of maintained micro propagated plants during summer season and the effect of foliar spray with salicylic acid (0, 200 or 400 mg. L-1) and marine algae extract (0, 5 or 10 g. L-1) on some characteristics of vegetative growth and some chemical characteristics. The experiment was carried out according to the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), as a factorial experiment with two factors and three replications. No significant effect for both factors was recorded in most vegetative characteristics, while chemical composition was significantly affected caused by the two factors.

Baclofen has a central acting effect, so clinicians have been utilized it chiefly for treating the spasticity of spinal origin. Nowadays, off-labeling use of baclofen with high doses is frequently increased. Despite of the extensive research studies on the effectiveness of baclofen, the reports on its histological effects on testes and on sperm parameters we insufficient. This work aims to assess the histological influences of baclofen on rats' testes and on several sperm characteristics after administration for 8 weeks. Twenty-two male rats at age of peripuberty (8weks) that were categorized into two groups. Group I (control group) includes 10 rats which were gavaged with 1 ml/day of distilled water daily. Group II (baclofen's group) includes 12 rats which were received baclofen 14.5 mg/kg for 8 weeks via gavage. At the end of the designed work, euthenization was done and the testes were excised from each rat, the epididymis samples were obtained and prepared for examination under light microscope. This study revealed that rats that were administered with 14.5mg/kg/day of baclofen for 8 weeks showed changes in the sperms parameters with several testicular histological alterations in their sections in comparison with those of controls. The percentage of the live sperms of rats (baclofen's group was lower than that of control group). Features of sloughing inside seminiferous tubules' lumen are frequently seen among these sections with mild decrease in the diameter of seminiferous tubules. Evidence of decreased Johnsen's scores (spermatogenic index -SI) was noticed in some sections, and decreasing of the frequency of seminiferous tubules that possess spermatozoa was obviously noticed. Moreover, disorganization of seminiferous tubules is shown in these sections. In addition, sections of rats of baclofen group revealed features of necrosis of seminiferous tubules, presence of degenerated spermatogenic layer, features of apoptosis, and presence of gaps in the seminiferous epithelium of degenerated tubules. Different alterations of sertoli cells as vacuolation, and detachment sertoli cells are noticed in sections of rats that were administered with baclofen. The chronic administration of rats with 14.5 mg/kg with baclofen induced effects on sperm parameters and testicular histology. however, the testicular histological alterations were more obvious. Further works are needed to clarify mechanism that stands behind these effects.

Intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) is an emerging approach for modification of calcified atherosclerotic plaque. We report 2 cases of IVL used for calcific mesenteric stenosis, one in de novo superior mesenteric artery stenosis and another in celiac artery in-stent restenosis. In both cases, IVL was used successfully, reducing stenosis without any complications. (Level of Difficulty: Intermediate.)

The results of the census for the year (1997) and the field study (questionnaire ) were adopted, as the data for the number of illiterate people for the year (2018) are unavailable. The research concludes that the decrease of the percentage of illiterate people is due to many reasons (social and economic) and many more. The research sums up many conclusions and recommendations that may help those who are responsible for eliminating illiteracy in the province.

Abstract Objective A recent trial of vitamin B12 supplementation among Indian children 6–30 months found no effect on the incidence of diarrhea and respiratory infections. These results differ with studies in adults that showed improvement of the immune response following treatment with vitamin B12. We sought to determine how the adequacy of vitamin B12 concentrations in breast milk could act as immune modulator and protect against the incidence of diarrhea and respiratory infections of children up to 18 months in urban Tanzania. Results A prospective cohort study was undertaken to determine the association of breast milk vitamin B12 concentration with the incidence of acute respiratory infection and diarrhea among infants in urban Tanzania. Introduction: Chagas disease currently affects some 6 million people around the world. At the chronic stage, cardiomyopathy occurs in about 20–30% of infested people. Most prevalence studies have focused on young to adult people due to the drastic consequences of acquiring the pathogen and the possibility to cure the disease at this age; the prevalence of this disease, the effect of patients' sex and the consequences to senescent people have been largely neglected. This study looks to characterize the seroprevalence of Chagas disease and its relation with occurrence of electrocardiographic anomalies associated with sex and age, and to compare rural and urban populations in Bolivia. Methodology: Seroprevalence of Chagas disease was determined in blood samples and electrocardiograms were performed on seropositive individuals. Results: The rural population showed higher seroprevalence than the urban population (92% and 40%, respectively). The proportion of Chagasic cardiac anomalies in seropositive persons was highest in patients of the 50–59 age group (36%) as compared with the 40–49 (8%) and the ≥60 (17%) age groups. Conclusions: Higher seroprevalence in rural population was attributable to a higher probability to encounter the vector in rural areas. Increased exposure to infection and to development of the disease symptoms together with increased lethality of the disease as patients age explains the age-related Chagasic electrocardiographic anomalies. Since rural and urban populations showed different reactions under Chagas disease and the rural population was mainly of guaraní stock, the genetic and environmental determinants of the results should be further explored.

Cardiovascular diseases are described as disorders of heart and vessels that involve stroke and coronary heart diseases. People in the Middle East converged to complementary medicine as an economic alternative to expensive healthcare services. Crataegus monogyna Jacq. (Lindm.) Rosacea is among the most commonly used herb for the treatment of declining cardiac performance, hypertension, and arrhythmias. Previously, we had shown that Crataegus Spp. (Hawthorn) extract increased the tendency of bleeding among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Herein, the effects of Crataegus Spp. extract on oxidative stress, cardiac and hematological parameters were evaluated in Sprague Dawley rats. Male rats were randomly assigned into four groups. Group 1 served as control while groups 2–4 served as the experimental groups and were administered extract at doses of 100, 200, and 500 mg/kg. All the doses were given orally once/day and the treatment was continued for three weeks. Hawthorn treatment resulted in a significant decrease in the liver thiobarbituric acid reactive substances level in a dose-dependent manner compared to the control (1.258 (3, 24); P < 0.0001). We found a significant increase in the cardiac antithrombin III among hawthorn treated group compared to the control (4.18 (3, 24); P < 0.0001). On the other hand, hawthorn treatment decreased significantly the liver factor-X level (0.1341 (3, 22); P < 0.0001), while no significant changes were seen in soluble-platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (P-value = 0.0599). In conclusions, hawthorn extract possesses an antioxidant effect and blood-thinning properties. Hence, we recommend attention when using this herbal extract with other anticoagulation and/or antiplatelet drugs or undergoing major cardiac surgery.

The computer control plays important role in the solar cell design and development of dual axis solar tracker for the sun's position. The main goal of this paper is to maximize energy output to reduce panel temperature (cooling), to increase efficiency of the PV panel. Small-scale solar is developed through a complete hardware and software in order to function accurately. The main parts in this work are Arduino Uno R3, kit relay, LDR (Light Dependent Resistor), LM35 (temperature sensor), high-efficiency solar panel and satellite motor. The Protuse software is used with (Arduino Uno) as embedded computer control. The results show the effectiveness of the complete tracking system.

Permethrin (PERM) is a member of the class I family of synthetic pyrethroids. Human use has shown that it affects different systems, with wide health dysfunctions. Our aim was to determine bioenergetics, neuroinflammation and morphology changes, as redox markers after subacute exposure to PERM in rats. We used MDA determination, protein carbonyl assay, mitochondrial O2 consumption, expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and a deep histopathological analysis of the hippocampus. PERM (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg body weight/day, o.v.) increased lipoperoxidation and carbonylated proteins in a dose-dependent manner in the brain regions. The activities of antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase, reductase, S-transferase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase showed an increase in all the different brain areas, with dose-dependent effects in the cerebellum. Cytokine profiles (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) increased in a dose-dependent manner in different brain tissues. Exposure to 150 mg/kg of permethrin induced degenerated and/or dead neurons in the rat hippocampus and induced mitochondrial uncoupling and reduction of oxidative phosphorylation and significantly decreased the respiratory parameters state 3-associated respiration in complex I and II. PERM exposure at low doses induces reactive oxygen species production and imbalance in the enzymatic antioxidant system, increases gene expression of pro-inflammatory interleukins, and could lead to cell damage mediated by mitochondrial functional impairment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review was to determine from published data the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency in the Saudi population. METHODS: An extensive and meticulous search was conducted for studies published in MEDLINE, EMBASE the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (2008”2015), and the Science Citation Index published data from the Annals of Saudi Medicine and Saudi Medical Journal with the key words: Vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, and Saudi Arabians. The inclusion criterion was studies published during 2008 to 2015, and studies involving healthy individuals between the age of 18 and 80 years. Binary random- effect model was used to estimate pooled Vitamin D deficiency. Prevalence rates along with overall estimate were presented by forest plot. Heterogeneity test was used to assess the significance of heterogeneity among studies. RESULTS: The authors identified 26 potentially relevant articles, 16 of which met the inclusion criteria. A total of 20,787 patients were analyzed. Sixty-two percent (12,959) were females, and the rest were males. The overall Vitamin D deficiency was 63.5% (95% CI: 53.3, 73.7). CONCLUSIONS: The currently available literature on the Saudi Arabian population suggests that the Vitamin D deficiency is around 60% and not 100% as indicated in some studies. The relatively small number of studies on the population and the different modes of diagnostic methodology used make the issue of correct figures of Vitamin D deficiency contentious.

Depression is a psychiatric disorder, and oxidative stress is a significant mechanism of damage in this mood disorder. It is characterized by an enhancement of oxidative stress markers and low concentrations of endogenous antioxidants, or antioxidants enzymes. This suggests that antioxidants could have an antidepressant effect. S-allyl cysteine (SAC) is a compound with antioxidant action or free radical scavenger capacity. The purpose of the current research was to evaluate the antidepressant-like effect as well as the antioxidant role of SAC on a preclinical test, using the Porsolt forced swim test (FST). SAC (30, 70, 120, or 250 mg/kg, ip) was administered to male BALB/c mice daily for 17 days, followed by the FST at day 18. Oxidative stress markers (reactive oxygen species, superoxide production, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzymes activities) were analyzed in the midbrain, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus. SAC (120 mg/kg) attenuated the immobility scores (44%) in the FST, and protection was unrelated to changes in locomotor activity. This antidepressant-like effect was related to decreased oxidative stress, as indicated by lipid peroxidation and manganese-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) activity in the hippocampus. SAC exerts an antidepressant-like effect that correlated, in part, with preventing oxidative damage in hippocampus.

Among the uncommon etiologies of gastrointestinal bleeding, gastroduodenal artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare condition that complicates acute recurrent pancreatitis, trauma, ERCP, cholecystectomy and other conditions. It is a life threatening condition that carries a mortality rate of 40% if not treated. We report a case of a 51-year- old male with history of recurrent acute pancreatitis who presented with repeated episodes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding of unclear source that required multiple admissions and blood transfusion. After thorough evaluation, the source was found to be gastroduodenal artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to recurrent idiopathic acute pancreatitis that was successfully treated with catheter embolization.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common primary brain malignancy in adults, yet survival outcomes remain poor. First line treatment is well established, however disease invariably recurs and improving prognosis is challenging. With the aim of personalizing therapy at recurrence, we have established a high content screening (HCS) platform to analyze the sensitivity profile of seven patient-derived cancer stem cell lines to 83 FDA-approved chemotherapy drugs, with and without irradiation.Seven cancer stem cell lines were derived from patients with GBM and, along with the established cell line U87-MG, each patient-derived line was cultured in tandem in serum-free conditions as adherent monolayers and three-dimensional neurospheres. Chemotherapeutics were screened at multiple concentrations and cells double-stained to observe their effect on both cell death and proliferation. Sensitivity was classified using high-throughput algorithmic image analysis.Cell line specific drug responses were observed across the seven patient-derived cell lines. Few agents were seen to have radio-sensitizing effects, yet some drug classes showed a marked difference in efficacy between monolayers and neurospheres. In vivo validation of six drugs suggested that cell death readout in a three-dimensional culture scenario is a more physiologically relevant screening model and could be used effectively to assess the chemosensitivity of patient-derived GBM lines.The study puts forward a number of non-standard chemotherapeutics that could be useful in the treatment of recurrent GBM, namely mitoxantrone, bortezomib and actinomycin D, whilst demonstrating the potential of HCS to be used for personalized treatment based on the chemosensitivity profile of patient tumor cells.

Dieulafoy’s lesion is a relatively rare but serious cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. It usually involves the upper gastrointestinal tract. However, it has recently been reported in different regions of the gastrointestinal tract, including the rectum. Here, we report the case of a female patient who presented with fresh bleeding per rectum for 1 day with low hemoglobin level. Colonoscopy revealed an actively bleeding rectal Dieulafoy’s lesion which was successfully treated with a clip. To our knowledge, there have been few reported cases of lower gastrointestinal bleeding caused by Dieulafoy’s lesion in the rectum.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a generally progressive, chronic hepatitis of unknown cause that occurs in children and adults of all ages. It is associated with a variety of autoimmune conditions like thyroid disorders (Hashimoto and Graves disease), celiac disease and multiple sclerosis (MS). We report the case of a 61-year-old woman with MS (untreated) and a history of Graves disease who presented with fatigue and right upper quadrant abdominal pain. She was admitted to our hospital for evaluation. Clinical and laboratory workup revealed AIH. She was successfully treated with prednisone and azathioprine, with complete clinical and laboratory improvement. However, to our knowledge there have been only a few reports of a possible association between AIH and untreated MS.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the in vitro specific reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging activity of nopal extracts and to study the effect of nopal consumption on plasma antioxidant capacity. The in vitro hydrolysis of the extract increased its antioxidant activity and the concentration of total polyphenols. The hydrolyzed extract showed ability to scavenge hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, peroxynitrite anion, superoxide anion and hypochlorous acid. Quercetin, isorhamnetin and kaempferol were identified in this extract by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)/mass spectrometry and vitamin C by HPLC. The antioxidant activity of nopal was compared with that of different foods and the following order was found: coffee > garlic > nopal > plum > chia seeds. Nopal consumption increased blood and plasma antioxidant activity in healthy subjects. Thus, nopal showed in vitro and in vivo antioxidant activity that may be, at least in part, due to the presence of polyphenols and vitamin C.

Acetonic extracts of pecan kernels and nutshells were fractionated using Sephadex LH-20 and three fractions were obtained from each. Only fraction II of both extracts contained simple polyphenols: catechin, epicatechin and ellagic acid were identified in kernel fraction II, while only epicatechin and ellagic acid were found in shell fraction II. Total gallic and ellagic acids were quantified in acid-hydrolyzed extracts: kernels contained 1.8 and 3.6 mg g−1, respectively, while nutshells contained 2.3 and 0.8 mg g−1, respectively. Kernel fraction III, containing high molecular weight compounds, showed the highest antioxidant activity and better antiproliferative activity in a cancer than a non-cancer cell line. Crude extracts showed cytotoxic activity in cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs), but shell extract was more cytotoxic; in contrast only kernel extract protected CGNs from H2O2-induced cell death. Thus, high molecular weight compounds of pecan kernel show noticeable bioactive properties and should be further characterised and analyzed as a rich source of bioactive polyphenols.

Verbena carolina L. (Verbenaceae) is used as a decoction in Mexican folk medicine with applications against digestive problems and for dermatological infections. The present work firstly reported HPLC analysis, as well as the free radical scavenging capacity of the extracts and isolated compounds. Antimicrobial analyses of these substances against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi and the fungi Candida albicans, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum were also tested, as well as the acute oral toxicity in mice of aqueous extracts. Major secondary metabolites in V. carolina extracts were isolated by conventional phytochemical methods which consisted of three terpenoids ((1), (3) and (4)) and four phenolic compounds ((2), (4)−(6)). Their contents were determined by HPLC in six different samples from different locations. The results indicated that ursolic acid (1), hispidulin (2), verbenaline (3), hastatoside (4), verbascoside (5), hispidulin 7-O-β-d-glucuronopyranoside (6) and pectolinaringenin-7-O-α-d-glucuronopyranoside (7) were the main constituents and ranged from 0.17 to 3.37 mg/g of dried plant, with verbascoside being the most abundant and with a significant antioxidant activity in reactive oxygen species (ROS). Hispidulin was the only active compound against T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum. The aqueous extract showed no significant toxicity (LD50: > 5000 mg/mL). To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive report of the chemical characterization of V. carolina and also of the activity of its constituents towards reactive oxygen species and dermatophytes, and its safety for consumption.

Methods: In a retrospective, noncomparative interventional case series, the medical records of patients who underwent PKP from January 2000 to December 2008 and had a minimum follow-up of 6 months were reviewed. All corneas were obtained from eye banks in the US. Indications, complications, and outcomes of surgery were recorded. This study was approved by the institutional review board. Results: Eighty-five consecutive eyes were included in this study. There were 52 (61.2%) males and 33 (38.8%) females. The median age was 35.0 years (range 3–85 years), and the median follow-up period was 24 months (range 6–108 months). The indications for PKP were keratoconus, bullous keratopathy, corneal scars, corneal dystrophy, and corneal regraft. The overall graft survival time was 88.9 months ± 4.9 months (mean ± standard error of mean, 95% confidence interval [CI] 79.4 months -98.4 months) while the 3-year and 5-year cumulative survival rates were 90.7% and 84.3%, respectively. Surgical indication (P = 0.038), immune rejection (P < 0.001), preoperative corneal vascularization (P = 0.022), and perioperative high intraocular pressure (P = 0.032) were associated significantly with corneal graft failure in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis reduced these significant associations to rejection (P < 0.001) and vascularization (P = 0.009). Relative risk for failure in rejected cornea was 16.22 (95% CI 4.99–52.69) and in vascularized cornea was 3.89 (95% CI 1.36–11.09). At last visit following PKP, 34 (40%) eyes had best spectacle-corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better, and 51 (60.0%) eyes had 20/80 or better. Best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was worse than 20/400 in 15 (17.6%) eyes. Conclusion: The overall corneal graft survival in a private setting in Saudi Arabia can be excellent. Thorough preoperative evaluation and comprehensive postoperative management are crucial for successful corneal transplantation. A larger multicenter study is recommended to portray the outcome of private corneal transplantation in Saudi Arabia in general. Infections and malignancies are among the most serious complications that follow organ or stem cell transplantation. They may have a mild course, and nonspecific and overlapping manifestations. The present article describes a case of symptomatic nodular pulmonary disease that complicated hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. It was diagnosed to be post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder, a potential sequela of immunosuppression and a very difficult entity to treat in profoundly immunosuppressed patients.

The research aimed at being acquainted with the differences among some physical and motor abilities for students of early and late school grades in addition to the differences of physical and motor abilities between each class, beginning from third class, with next one. The follow-up descriptive method was used. The sample included 200 students from the ALJANAEN primary school in the left bank of Mosul city and AHMED ABDULGHANI Primary school in the right bank. The sample represented the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth primary classes of the early and late school grades. Specific tests of the physical and motor abilities were used such as single leap of both legs with distance of 10 meters for measuring the power of leg muscles, zigzag run for measuring the agility, sit and reach for measuring the flexibility of spine and posterior leg muscles. And the numbered circles for measuring coordination. Arithmetic mean, standard deviation, Person’s coefficient correlation, percentage, and (T) test of the two independent samples were used for processing data statistically. The research concluded the following: 1. The students of the late school grade had improved compared with the early one in test of single leap of both legs with distance of 10 meters for measuring the power of leg muscles and test sit and reach of flexibility. 2. There were no improvement differences between the two grades in other abilities such as locomotive speed, left leg power, agility and coordination 3. There were no improvement differences between each class, beginning from third class, with next one in all physical and motor abilities in question

Many new studies suggest into the possibility of obtaining positive results when exposing the water to the magnetic field of the particular iceberg, where this lead to change some properties of the water, and that the main objective for the design of systems of drip irrigation is to reduce the losses water that occur as a result of deep penetration or surface runoff. The objective of this research is to study the effect of treatment magnetism on the movement of water and the distribution of moisture in the soil, where this study included a 17 tests using three rates of addition of water (1.8, 2.4, 3.0) cm3/min/cm and four intensities of magnetic water treatment (500, 1000, 1500, 2000), in addition to the use of normal salty water and salty water treated magnetically. The results show that the wetting front of water treated magnetically, whether sweet or salty, progressing faster through the soil than the wetting front of normal water (without treatment) at all adding rates of water, where the increasing percent in the size of the wetted area of soil when using the magnetically treated water with intensity of 2000 gauss is 12 % and 18 % and 15.3 % for adding rates 1.8 and 2.4 and 3.0 cm3/min /cm , respectively, also, the moisture content of the soil as well as the proliferation and homogeneity was higher in the case of the using magnetically treated water.

Neurons and glial cells in the developing brain arise from neural progenitor cells (NPCs). Nestin, an intermediate filament protein, is thought to be expressed exclusively by NPCs in the normal brain, and is replaced by the expression of proteins specific for neurons or glia in differentiated cells. Nestin expressing NPCs are found in the adult brain in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus. While significant attention has been paid to studying NPCs in the SVZ and SGZ in the adult brain, relatively little attention has been paid to determining whether nestin-expressing neural cells (NECs) exist outside of the SVZ and SGZ. We therefore stained sections immunocytochemically from the adult rat and human brain for NECs, observed four distinct classes of these cells, and present here the first comprehensive report on these cells. Class I cells are among the smallest neural cells in the brain and are widely distributed. Class II cells are located in the walls of the aqueduct and third ventricle. Class IV cells are found throughout the forebrain and typically reside immediately adjacent to a neuron. Class III cells are observed only in the basal forebrain and closely related areas such as the hippocampus and corpus striatum. Class III cells resemble neurons structurally and co-express markers associated exclusively with neurons. Cell proliferation experiments demonstrate that Class III cells are not recently born. Instead, these cells appear to be mature neurons in the adult brain that express nestin. Neurons that express nestin are not supposed to exist in the brain at any stage of development. That these unique neurons are found only in brain regions involved in higher order cognitive function suggests that they may be remodeling their cytoskeleton in supporting the neural plasticity required for these functions.

The verse (35) in SURA (AL- Nur) in the HOLY QURAN has inspired the author to look into the possibility of using Olive Oil as active dye laser material. Olive Oil which is classified as organic compound, having a good properties candidate it to be used as active dye laser material. The emission spectrum diagrams at some of absorption peaks (414, 536, 632 and 670) nm will be measured. These diagrams have been used to determine the Fluorescence quantum yield, Oscillator strength, Einstein coefficients for the spontaneous emission, Radiative and Fluorescence lifetime and absorption and cross sections. It has been found that fluorescence occurs at 669 nm for the entire absorption spectrum. Fluorescence of Olive Oil has been experimented using 30mW, 532nm semiconductor laser, with a beam diameter of 1.3mm. Red fluorescence has been noticed over a distance of 7cm in a glass container.

In allostery, a binding event at one site in a protein modulates the behavior of a distant site. Identifying residues that relay the signal between sites remains a challenge. We have developed predictive models using support-vector machines, a widely used machine-learning method. The training data set consisted of residues classified as either hotspots or non-hotspots based on experimental characterization of point mutations from a diverse set of allosteric proteins. Each residue had an associated set of calculated features. Two sets of features were used, one consisting of dynamical, structural, network, and informatic measures, and another of structural measures defined by Daily and Gray. The resulting models performed well on an independent data set consisting of hotspots and non-hotspots from five allosteric proteins. For the independent data set, our top 10 models using Feature Set 1 recalled 68-81% of known hotspots, and among total hotspot predictions, 58-67% were actual hotspots. Hence, these models have precision P = 58-67% and recall R = 68-81%. The corresponding models for Feature Set 2 had P = 55-59% and R = 81-92%. We combined the features from each set that produced models with optimal predictive performance. The top 10 models using this hybrid feature set had R = 73-81% and P = 64-71%, the best overall performance of any of the sets of models. Our methods identified hotspots in structural regions of known allosteric significance. Moreover, our predicted hotspots form a network of contiguous residues in the interior of the structures, in agreement with previous work. In conclusion, we have developed models that discriminate between known allosteric hotspots and non-hotspots with high accuracy and sensitivity. Moreover, the pattern of predicted hotspots corresponds to known functional motifs implicated in allostery, and is consistent with previous work describing sparse networks of allosterically important residues.
