High-field REBCO magnets contain several coils with many turns. {For these magnets,} electro-thermal quench is an issue that magnet designers need to take into account. Thus, there is a need for fast and accurate software to numerically model the overall performance of full-scale magnets. High temperature superconductors can be modeled using different techniques for electro-magnetic (such as $H$-formulation and $A-V$ formulation) and thermal (finite element method) analysis. However, it takes a lot of time to model the electro-magnetic and electro-thermal behavior of superconductors simultaneously in a commercial software, especially for non-insulated or metal-insulated coils. We have developed a novel software programmed in C++, which performs coupled electro-magnetic and electro-thermal analysis using variational methods based on Minimum Electro-Magnetic Entropy Production (MEMEP) and Finite Difference, respectively. The developed software is applied to axi-symmetric fullscale magnets of more than 30 T field strength for transient design (thermal quench reliability), taking screening currents into account. We show that the magnets incorporating non-insulated coils {are more reiable against quench} than the metal insulated coils. Also, {realistic} cooling conditions at boundaries is essential for such simulations. High temperature REBCO superconducting tapes are very promising for high-field magnets. Under high magnetic fields there are high electro-mechanical forces, and thus concern for mechanical damage. Due to large screening currents and composite structure of the tape, the mechanical design of these magnets is not straightforward. In addition, many contemporary designs use insulated winding. In this work we develop a novel two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element tool programmed in MATLAB that assumes the displacement field within linear elastic range. The stack of pancakes and a large number of REBCO tape turns are approximated as an an-isotropic bulk hollow cylinder. Our results agree with uni-axial stress experiments in literature, validating the bulk approximation. Here, we study the following configuration. The current is first ramp up to below the critical current and we calculate the screening currents and the forces that they cause using the MEMEP model. As a case study, 32 T REBCO superconductor magnet, is taken and simulated numerically. We have done complete mechanical analysis of the magnet by including the axial and shear mechanical quantities for each pancake unlike previous work where only radial and circumferential quantities are focused. Effect on mechanical quantities without screening current is also calculated and compared. It is shown that including screening current induced field strongly affect the mechanical quantities, specially the shear stress. The latter might be the critical quantity for certain magnet configurations. Additionally, in order to overcome high stresses, a stiff over banding of different material is considered and numerically modelled which significantly reduces the mechanical stresses. The FE based model developed is efficient to calculate the mechanical behaviour of any general superconductor magnet and its devices.

REBCO high-temperature superconductors are promising for fully superconducting high-field magnets, including ultra-high field magnets. Non-insulated (NI) and metal-insulated (MI) windings are a good solution for protection against electro-thermal quench. Design and optimization requires numerical modelling of REBCO inserts for high-field magnets. Here, we detail a fast and accurate two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional model for the electromagnetic response of NI and MI coils, which is based on the Minimum Electro Magnetic Entropy Production (MEMEP). Benchmarking with an $A-V$ formulation method on a double pancake coil shows good agreement. We also analyse a fully superconducting 32 T magnet with a REBCO insert and a low-temperature superconducing (LTS) outsert. In particular, we analyze the current density, the screening curren induced field (SCIF), and the AC loss. We have shown that metal-insulated coils enable transfer of angular current in the radial direction, and hence magnet protection, while keeping the same screening currents and AC loss of isolated coils, even at relatively high ramp rates of 1 A/s. Surprisingly, soldered coils with low resistance between turns present relatively low AC loss for over-current configuration, which might enable higher generated magnetic fields. The numerical method presented here can be applied to optimize high-field magnets regarding SCIF in MI or NI magnets. It also serves as the basis for future electro-thermal modelling and multi-physics modeling that also includes mechanical properties.

The proliferation of technologies, such as extended reality (XR), has increased the demand for high-quality three-dimensional (3D) graphical representations. Industrial 3D applications encompass computer-aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), scanning, and robotics. However, current methods employed for industrial 3D representations suffer from high implementation costs and reliance on manual human input for accurate 3D modeling. To address these challenges, neural radiance fields (NeRFs) have emerged as a promising approach for learning 3D scene representations based on provided training 2D images. Despite a growing interest in NeRFs, their potential applications in various industrial subdomains are still unexplored. In this paper, we deliver a comprehensive examination of NeRF industrial applications while also providing direction for future research endeavors. We also present a series of proof-of-concept experiments that demonstrate the potential of NeRFs in the industrial domain. These experiments include NeRF-based video compression techniques and using NeRFs for 3D motion estimation in the context of collision avoidance. In the video compression experiment, our results show compression savings up to 48\% and 74\% for resolutions of 1920x1080 and 300x168, respectively. The motion estimation experiment used a 3D animation of a robotic arm to train Dynamic-NeRF (D-NeRF) and achieved an average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of disparity map with the value of 23 dB and an structural similarity index measure (SSIM) 0.97.

The design of superconducting applications containing windings of superconducting wires or tapes requires electro-thermal quench modelling. In this article, we present a reliable numerical method based on a variational principle and we benchmark it to a conventional finite difference method that we implemented in C++. As benchmark problem, we consider a racetrack coil made of REBCO superconducting tape under short circuit, approximated as a DC voltage that appears at the initial time. Results show that both models agree with each other and analytical limits. Since both models take screening currents into account, they are promising for the design of magnets (especially fast-ramp magnets) and power applications, such as the stator windings of superconducting motors or generators., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

The high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) dynamo exploits the nonlinear resistivity of an HTS tape to generate a DC voltage when subjected to a varying magnetic field. This leads to the so-called flux pumping phenomenon and enables the injection of DC current into a superconducting coil connected to the dynamo without current leads. In this work, the process of charging a coil by an HTS dynamo is examined in detail using two numerical models: the Minimum Electromagnetic Entropy Production and the segregated $\textbf{H}$-formulation finite element model. The numerical results are compared with an analytical method for various airgaps and frequencies. Firstly, the I-V curves of the modeled HTS dynamo are calculated to obtain the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current and internal resistance. Afterward, the process of charging a coil by the dynamo including the charging current curve and its dynamic behavior are investigated. The results obtained by the two models show excellent quantitative and qualitative agreement with each other and with the analytical method. Although the general charging process of the coil can be obtained from the I-V curve of the flux pump, the current ripples within a cycle of dynamo rotation, which can cause ripple AC loss in the HTS dynamo, can only be captured via the presented models., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

High temperature superconducting (HTS) dynamos are promising devices that can inject large DC currents into the winding of superconducting machines or magnets in a contactless way. Thanks to this, troublesome brushes in HTS machines or bulky currents leads with high thermal losses will be no longer required. The working mechanism of HTS dynamo has been controversial during the recent years and several explanations and models have been proposed to elucidate its performance. In this paper, we present the first three-dimensional (3D) model of an HTS flux pump, which has good agreement with experiments. This model can be beneficial to clarify the mechanism of the dynamo and pinpoint its unnoticed characteristics. Employing this model, we delved into the screening current and electric field distribution across the tape surface in several crucial time steps. This is important, since the overcritical screening current has been shown to be the reason for flux pumping. In addition, we analyzed the impact of both components of electric field and screening current on voltage generation, which was not possible in previous 2D modeling. Superconducting stacks and bulks can act as very strong magnets (more than 17 T), but they lose their magnetization in the presence of alternating (or ripple) transverse magnetic fields, due to the dynamic magneto-resistance. This demagnetization is a major concern for applications requiring high run times, such as motors and generators, where ripple fields are of high amplitude and frequency. We have developed a numerical model based on dynamic magneto-resistance that is much faster than the conventional Power-Law-resistivity model, enabling us to simulate high number of cycles with the same accuracy. We simulate demagnetization behavior of superconducting stacks made of 10-100 tapes for up to 2 million cycles of applied ripple field. We found that for high number of cycles, the trapped field reaches non-zero stationary values for both superconducting bulks and stacks; as long as the ripple field amplitudes are below the parallel penetration field, being determined by the penetration field for a single tape in stacks. Bulks keep substantial stationary values for much higher ripple field amplitudes than the stacks, being relevant for high number of cycles. The high-Tc superconducting (HTS) dynamo is a promising device that can inject large DC supercurrents into a closed superconducting circuit. This is particularly attractive to energise HTS coils in NMR/MRI magnets and superconducting rotating machines without the need for connection to a power supply via current leads. It is only very recently that quantitatively accurate, predictive models have been developed which are capable of analysing HTS dynamos and explain their underlying physical mechanism. In this work, we propose to use the HTS dynamo as a new benchmark problem for the HTS modelling community. The benchmark geometry consists of a permanent magnet rotating past a stationary HTS coated-conductor wire in the open-circuit configuration, assuming for simplicity the 2D (infinitely long) case. Despite this geometric simplicity the solution is complex, comprising time-varying spatially-inhomogeneous currents and fields throughout the superconducting volume. In this work, this benchmark problem has been implemented using several different methods, including H-formulation-based methods, coupled H-A and T-A formulations, the Minimum Electromagnetic Entropy Production method, and integral equation and volume integral equation-based equivalent circuit methods. Each of these approaches show excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement for the open-circuit equivalent instantaneous voltage and the cumulative time-averaged equivalent voltage, as well as the current density and electric field distributions within the HTS wire at key positions during the magnet transit. A critical analysis and comparison of each of the modelling frameworks is presented, based on the following key metrics: number of mesh elements in the HTS wire, total number of mesh elements in the model, number of degrees of freedom (DOFs), tolerance settings and the approximate time taken per cycle for each model., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

In recent years, the $H$ formulation of Maxwell's equation has become the de facto standard for simulating the time-dependent electromagnetic behavior of superconducting applications with commercial software. However, there are cases where other formulations are desirable, for example for modeling superconducting turns in electrical machines or situations where the superconductor is better described by the critical state than by a power-law resistivity. In order to accurately and efficiently handle those situations, here we consider two published approaches based on the magnetic vector potential: the $T$-$A$ formulation of Maxwell's equations (with power-law resistivity) and Campbell's implementation of the critical state model. In this contribution, we extend the $T$-$A$ formulation to thick conductors so that large coils with different coupling scenarios between the turns can be considered. We also revise Campbell's model and discuss it in terms of its ability to calculate AC losses: in particular, we investigate the dependence of the calculated AC losses on the frequency of the AC excitation and the possibility of using quick one-step (instead of full cycle) simulations to calculate the AC losses.

In high power density superconducting motors, superconducting tapes are usually stacked and connected together at terminals to improve the current capacity. When a parallel sinusoidal magnetic field is applied on this partially coupled stack, the coupling current is induced and causes additional coupling loss. Usually 3D modeling is needed to calculate the coupling loss but it takes too much computing resource and time. In this paper, a numerical 2D modeling by minimum electromagnetic entropy production (MEMEP) method is developed to speed up the calculation. The presented MEMEP model shows good accuracy and the capability to take the realistic resistance between tapes into account for coupling loss calculation with a high number of mesh element, which agrees to measurements.Thanks to the model, a systemic study of coupling loss on amplitude-dependence, frequency-dependence, resistance-dependence, and length-dependence, is presented and discussed. Stacks of REBCO tapes can trap large amounts of magnetic fields and can stay magnetized for long periods of times. This makes them an interesting option for major engineering applications such as motors, generators and magnetic bearings. When subjected to transverse alternating fields, superconducting tapes face a reduction in the trapped field, and thus it is the goal of this paper to understand the influence of all parameters in cross field demagnetization of stacks of tapes. Major parameter dependencies considered for the scope of this paper are ripple field amplitude, frequency, tape width, tape thickness (from 1 to 20 $\mu$m), and number of tapes (up to 20). This article also provides a systemic study of the relaxation time constant $\tau$, which can be used to estimate the cross-field demagnetization decay for high number of cycles. Modeling is based on the Minimum Electro-Magnetic Entropy Production method, and it is shown that the 2D model gives very accurate results for long samples when compared with 3D model. Analytical formulas for large number of cycles have been devised. The results show that when the ripple field amplitude is above the penetration field of one tape, the stack always fully demagnetizes, roughly in exponential decay. Increasing the number of tapes only increases the relaxation time. The formulas derived also hold when validated against numerical results, and can be used for quick approximation of decay constant. They also show that the cause of the decreases of cross-field demagnetization with number of tapes is the increase in the self-inductance of the magnetization currents. Stacks of superconducting tapes can trap much higher magnetic fields than conventional magnets. This makes them very promising for motors and generators. However, ripple magnetic fields in these machines present a cross-field component that demagnetizes the stacks. At present, there is no quantitative agreement between measurements and modeling of cross-field demagnetization, mainly due to the need of a 3D model that takes the end effects and real micron-thick superconducting layer into account. This article presents 3D modeling and measurements of cross-field demagnetization in stacks of up to 5 tapes and initial magnetization modeling of stacks of up to 15 tapes. 3D modeling of the cross-field demagnetization explicitly shows that the critical current density, $J_c$, in the direction perpendicular to the tape surface does not play a role in cross-field demagnetization. When taking the measured anisotropic magnetic field dependence of $J_c$ into account, 3D calculations agree with measurements with less than 4 % deviation, while the error of 2D modeling is much higher. Then, our 3D numerical methods can realistically predict cross-field demagnetization. Due to the force-free configuration of part of the current density, J, in the stack, better agreement with experiments will probably require measuring the Jc anisotropy for the whole solid angle range, including $J$ parallel to the magnetic field., Comment: 36 pages, 20 figures

High-temperature superconducting (HTS) Flux pumps are promising devices to maintain steady current mode in HTS magnets or to energize rotor windings in motors and generators in a contactless way. Among different types of flux pumps, the dynamo-type flux pump has been very common due to its simple structure and ease of maintenance. However, understanding the principle of dynamo-type flux pump has been challenging despite the recent progress. For addressing this challenge, the numerical modeling has proved to be an appropriate tool. Modeling is usually fast, precise, cost-efficient and enables to examine some details that is hardly possible via measurements. For this purpose, an efficient numerical model based on Minimum Electromagnetic Entropy Production (MEMEP) method has been used to study the performance of the flux pump in open-circuit mode. This model is the fastest and most efficient model of a flux pump with good agreement with experiments. In addition to the main behavior of the flux pump, the influence of airgap on open-circuit DC voltage of the flux pump has been investigated. This study revealed an important property in HTS flux pumps that with increasing airgap, pumping voltage in superconducting tape does not cease, but only reaches to insignificantly low values, which is not measurable via experiments. Furthermore, the modeling results of open-circuit DC voltage were compared to experimental ones obtained from the article published in 2016 by Bumby \textit{et al.} \cite{bumby2016anomalous} and the results showed good agreement., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures

Modelling high temperature superconductor (HTS) motors remains challenging mainly due to the high aspect ratio of these conductors but also because of the properties of the magnetic materials. This paper presents a 2D time dependent model to assess the AC losses of superconducting motors based on the new T-A formulation, which by using Finite Element Methods (FEM), allows its implementation in commercial software. The T-A formulation computes the magnetic flux density with different Maxwell's equations depending on the areas of the motor and makes it possible to use the thin strip approximation i.e. the HTS tapes are modelled as infinitely thin lines. The model is then expected to tackle the high aspect ratio of the HTS as well as decreasing both the mesh complexity and the computing time. The first objective of the paper is to validate the method in 2D by evaluating the AC losses of a specific synchronous motor called SUTOR; the computed results are compared with good agreements to those assessed with the MEMEP method, already validated. In a second part, the same losses are computed, taking into account the anisotropy of Jc with the implementation of a data set based on experimentally measured Ic at 65 K and 77 K.

Many superconducting power applications contain REBCO coils. Superconducting motors are very interesting for mobile applications like aviation, thanks to their high power per unit weight. In order to reduce the inductance, multi-tape conductors are often used in windings but parallel tapes present coupling AC loss. In this article, we analyze the AC loss of single coils and a full stator of a motor made of windings of parallel tapes, taking several coupling situations into account. Our computer modeling method combines self-programmed and commercial finite-element methods to calculate the current density and AC loss. We found that isolating the tapes along the length provides almost the same AC loss reduction as that obtained by full transposition. When the magnetic field has a parallel component to the current density ${\bf J}$ there appear force-free effects due to flux cutting and crossing. This results in an anisotropic ${\bf E}({\bf J})$ relation, being ${\bf E}$ the electric field. Understanding force-free effects is interesting not only for the design of superconducting power and magnet applications but also for material characterization. This work develops and applies a fast and accurate computer modeling method based on a variational approach that can handle force-free anisotropic ${\bf E}({\bf J})$ relations and perform fully three dimensional (3D) calculations. We present a systematic study of force-free effects in rectangular thin films and prisms with several finite thicknesses under applied magnetic fields with arbitrary angle $\theta$ with the surface. The results are compared with the same situation with isotropic ${\bf E}({\bf J})$ relation. The thin film situation shows gradual critical current density penetration and a general increase of the magnitude of the magnetization with the angle $\theta$ but a minimum at the remnant state of the magnetization loop. The prism model presents current paths with 3D bending for all angles $\theta$. The average current density over the thickness agrees very well with the thin film model except for the highest angles. The prism hysteresis loops reveal a peak after the remnant state, which is due to the parallel component of the self-magnetic-field and is implicitly neglected for thin films. The presented numerical method shows the capability to take force-free situations into account for general 3D situations with a high number of degrees of freedom. Bulk superconductors are used in both many applications and material characterization experiments, being the bulk shape of rectangular prism very frequent. However the magnetization currents are still mostly unknown for this kind of three dimensional (3D) shape, specially below the saturation magnetic field. Knowledge of the magnetization currents in this kind of samples is needed to interpret the measurements and the development of bulk materials for applications. This article presents a systematic analysis of the magnetization currents in prisms of square base and several thicknesses. We make this study by numerical modeling using a variational principle that enables high number of degrees of freedom. We also compute the magnetization loops and the saturation magnetic field, using a definition that is more relevant for thin prisms than previous ones. The article presents a practical analytical fit for any aspect ratio. For applied fields below the saturation field, the current paths are not rectangular, presenting 3D bending. The thickness-average results are consistent with previous modeling and measurements for thin films. The 3D bending of the current lines indicates that there could be flux cutting effects in rectangular prisms. The component of the critical current density in the applied field direction may play a role, being the magnetization currents in a bulk and a stack of tapes not identical., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures. Computing the electric eddy currents in non-linear materials, such as superconductors, is \E{not straightforward}. The design of superconducting magnets and power applications needs electromagnetic computer modeling, being in many cases a three-dimensional (3D) problem. Since 3D problems require high computing times, novel time-efficient modeling tools are highly desirable. This article presents a novel computing modeling method based on a variational principle. The self-programmed implementation uses an original minimization method, which divides the sample into sectors. This speeds-up the computations with no loss of accuracy, while enabling efficient parallelization. This method could also be applied to model transients in linear materials or networks of non-linear electrical elements. As example, we analyze the magnetization currents of a cubic superconductor. This 3D situation remains unknown, in spite of the fact that it is often met in material characterization and bulk applications. We found that below the penetration field and in part of the sample, current flux lines are not rectangular and significantly bend in the direction parallel to the applied field. Maintaining multiple wireless connections is a promising solution to boost capacity in fifth-generation (5G) networks, where user equipment is able to consume radio resources of several serving cells simultaneously and potentially aggregate bandwidth across all of them. The emerging dual connectivity paradigm can be regarded as an attractive access mechanism in dense heterogeneous 5G networks, where bandwidth sharing and cooperative techniques are evolving to meet the increased capacity requirements. Dual connectivity in the uplink remained highly controversial, since the user device has a limited power budget to share between two different access points, especially when located close to the cell edge. On the other hand, in an attempt to enhance the uplink communications performance, the concept of uplink and downlink decoupling has recently been introduced. Leveraging these latest developments, our work significantly advances prior art by proposing and investigating the concept of flexible cell association in dual connectivity scenarios, where users are able to aggregate resources from more than one serving cell. In this setup, the preferred association policies for the uplink may differ from those for the downlink, thereby allowing for a truly decoupled access. Screening currents caused by varying magnetic fields degrade the homogeneity and stability of the magnetic fields created by $RE$BCO coated conductor coils. They are responsible for the AC loss, which is also important for other power applications containing windings. Since real magnets contain coils exceeding 10000 turns, accurate modeling tools for this number of turns are necessary for magnet design. This article presents a fast numerical method to model coils with no loss of accuracy. We model a 10400-turn coil for its real geometry and coils of up to 40000 turns with the continuous approximation, which we checked that introduces negligible errors. The screening currents, the Screening Current Induced Field (SCIF) and the AC loss is analyzed in detail. The SCIF is maximum at the remnant state with a considerably large value and decreases substantially after one day of relaxation. The instantaneous AC loss for an anisotropic magnetic-field dependent $J_c$ is qualitatively different than for a constant $J_c$, although the loss per cycle is similar. Saturation of the magnetization currents at the end pancakes causes that the maximum AC loss at the first ramp increases with $J_c$. The presented modeling tool can accurately calculate the SCIF and AC loss in practical computing times for coils with any number of turns used in real windings, enabling parameter optimization., Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures

Many large-scale applications require electromagnetic modelling with extensive numerical computations, such as magnets or 3-dimensional (3D) objects like transposed conductors or motors and generators. Therefore, it is necessary to develop computationally time-efficient but still accurate numerical methods. This article develops a general variational formalism for any ${\bf E}({\bf J})$ relation and applies it to model coated-conductor coils containing up to thousands of turns, taking magnetization currents fully into account. The variational principle, valid for any 3D situation, restricts the computations to the sample volume, reducing the computation time. However, no additional magnetic materials interacting with the superconductor are taken directly into account. Regarding the coil modelling, we use a power law $E(J)$ relation with magnetic field-dependent critical current density, $J_c$, and power law exponent, $n$. We test the numerical model by comparing the results to analytical formulas for thin strips and experiments for stacks of pancake coils, finding a very good agreement. Afterwards, we model a magnet-size coil of 4000 turns (stack of 20 pancake coils of 200 turns each). We found that the AC loss is mainly due to magnetization currents. We also found that for an $n$ exponent of 20, the magnetization currents are greatly suppressed after 1 hour relaxation. In addition, in coated conductor coils magnetization currents have an important impact on the generated magnetic field; which should be taken into account for magnet design. Energy applications employing high-temperature superconductors (HTS), such as motors/generators, transformers, transmission lines and fault current limiters, are usually operated in the alternate current (AC) regime. In order to be efficient, the HTS devices need to have a sufficiently low value of AC loss, in addition to the necessary current-carrying capacity. Most applications are operated with currents beyond the current capacity of single conductors and consequently require cabled conductor solutions with much higher current carrying capacity, from a few kA to up to 20-30 kA for large hydro-generators. A century ago, in 1914, Ludwig Roebel invented a low-loss cable design for copper cables, which was successively named after him. The main idea behind Roebel cables is to separate the current in different strands and to provide a full transposition of the strands along the cable direction. Nowadays, these cables are commonly used in the stator of large generators. Based on the same design concept of their conventional material counterparts, HTS Roebel cables from REBCO coated conductors were first manufactured at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and have been successively developed in a number of varieties that provide all the required technical features such as fully transposed strands, high transport currents and low AC losses, yet retaining enough flexibility for a specific cable design. In the past few years a large number of scientific papers have been published on the concept, manufacturing and characterization of such cables. Times are therefore mature for a review of those results. The goal is to provide an overview and a succinct and easy-to-consult guide for users, developers, and manufacturers of this kind of HTS cables.

Micron-sized Hall bars and micro-SQUIDs are now used routinely to measure the local static and dynamic magnetic response with micron-scale spatial resolution. While this provides a powerful new tool, determining the intrinsic magnetization presents new challenges, as it requires correcting for demagnetization fields that vary widely with position on a sample. In this paper we develop a method to correct for the demagnetization effect at local points of a rectangular prism shaped sample using a finite element analysis of Maxwell's equation applied to local Hall sensor measurements calibrated by bulk measurements of the magnetization. This method can be generalized to other geometric shapes to analyze data obtained with local magnetic probes., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

In this contribution we develop a refined numerical model of pancake coils assembled from a coated conductor Roebel cable, which includes the angular dependence of the critical current density $J_c$ on the magnetic field and the actual (three-dimensional) shape of the current lead used to inject the current. Previous works of ours indicate that this latter has an important influence on the measured value of the AC losses. For the simulation of the superconductor, we used two alternative models based on different descriptions of the superconductor's properties and implemented in different mathematical schemes. For the simulation of the current lead we use a full three-dimensional finite-element model. The results of the simulation are compared with measurements and the main issues related to the modeling and the measurement of Roebel coils are discussed in detail.

Many applications, such as magnets and SMES, are usually charged and discharged under a bias DC current, which may increase the AC loss. For their design, it is necessary to understand and predict the AC loss. This article analises the AC loss in magnet-like coils under DC bias contribution super-imposed to the AC current. The analysis is based on a numerical model that takes the interaction between magnetization currents in all turns into account. The studied example is a stack of 32 pancake coils with 200 turns each made of thin tape, such as $Re$BCO coated conductor. We present the current density, the instantaneous power loss, and loss per cycle. We have found that the loss increases with the DC bias current. The instantaneous power loss is the largest in the initial rise of the the AC current. In following cycles, the power loss is higher in the current increase than in the decrease. The loss per cycle is the largest at the end pancakes. In conclusion, the highest cooling power should be supplied to the top and bottom pancakes and during current rise, specially the initial one. Numerical modeling of superconductors is widely recognized as a powerful tool for interpreting experimental results, understanding physical mechanisms and predicting the performance of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes, wires and devices. This is especially true for ac loss calculation, since a sufficiently low ac loss value is imperative to make these materials attractive for commercialization. In recent years, a large variety of numerical models, based on different techniques and implementations, have been proposed by researchers around the world, with the purpose of being able to estimate ac losses in HTSs quickly and accurately. This article presents a literature review of the methods for computing ac losses in HTS tapes, wires and devices. Technical superconductors have a relatively complex geometry (filaments, which might be twisted or transposed, or layers) and consist of different materials. As a result, different loss contributions exist. In this paper, we describe the ways of computing such loss contributions, which include hysteresis losses, eddy current losses, coupling losses, and losses in ferromagnetic materials. For superconducting coils with many turns, it is widely believed that the magnetic field from magnetization currents is negligible compared to the one generated by the whole coil. This article shows that this is not true for coils with a considerably large number of turns (up to thousands). We introduce a method to accurately calculate the AC loss in coils with virtually any number of turns that takes the magnetization currents into account. The AC loss in ReBCO coated conductors is large in situations when the conductors are subjected to a considerable magnetic field, like in rotating machines, transformers and high-field magnets. Roebel cables can reduce the AC loss in these cases. However, computer simulations are needed to interpret the experiments, understand the loss mechanisms, reduce the AC loss by optimising the Roebel cable and design the cryogenic system. In this article, we simulate and discuss the AC loss due to an applied magnetic field making an arbitrary angle with the cable and taking into account a realistic anisotropic field dependence of the critical current density. We study the AC loss in the superconductor parts for the limits of very high coupling currents and completely uncoupled strands. The simulations for the uncoupled case also describe a double pancake coil with no transport current. For the simulations, we use two different numerical methods with complementary strengths. This serves as a mutual check of the correctness of the simulation results, which agree to each other. Opposite than expected, we found that the AC loss does not only depend on the perpendicular component of the applied magnetic field. We also found that the AC loss for applied fields with an orientation below 7 degrees with the strands surface is reduced more than one order of magnitude comparing to an untransposed cable. Therefore, we recommend to use Roebel cables for windings with important parallel components of the magnetic field, such as transformers and high-field magnets., Comment: 28 pages, 11 figures

We prove that every partially ordered simple group of rank one which is not Riesz embeds into a simple Riesz group of rank one if and only if it is not isomorphic to the additive group of the rationals. Using this result, we construct examples of simple Riesz groups of rank one $G$, containing unbounded intervals $(D_n)_{n\geq 1}$ and $D$, that satisfy: (a) For each $n\geq 1$, $tD_n\ne G^+$ for every $t< q_n$, but $q_nD_n=G^+$ (where $(q_n)$ is a sequence of relatively prime integers); (b) For every $n\geq 1$, $nD\ne G^+$. Current and field profiles, and magnetization and AC losses are calculated for an array of infinitely long superconducting tapes arranged vertically in a perpendicularly applied magnetic field. Calculations are based on the critical state model. The finite thickness of the tapes and the effects of demagnetizing fields are considered. The influence of the magnetic coupling of the filaments in the magnetic properties of the arrays are studied. Current and field profiles, and magnetization and ac losses are calculated for arrays of infinitely long superconducting tapes in the critical state in a perpendicularly applied magnetic field. The tapes are arranged both horizontally and in a matrix configuration, which is the geometry found in many actual high-T_c superconducting tapes. The finite thickness of the tapes and the effects of demagnetizing fields are considered. Systematic results for the magnetization and ac losses of the tapes are obtained as function of the geometry and separation of the constituent tapes.
