As one of the most widely used personal protective equipment (PPE), body armors play an important role in protecting the human body from the high-velocity impact of bullets or projectiles. The body torso and critical organs of the wear may suffer severe behind-armor blunt trauma (BABT) even though the impactor is stopped by the body armor. A type of novel composite material through incorporating shear stiffening gel (STG) into ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam is developed and used as buffer layers to reduce BABT. In this paper, the protective performance of body armors composed of fabric bulletproof layers and a buffer layer made of foam material is investigated both experimentally and numerically. The effectiveness of STG-modified EVA in damage relief is verified by ballistic tests. In parallel with the experimental study, numerical simulations are conducted by LS-DYNA® to investigate the dynamic response of each component and capture the key mechanical parameters, which are hardly obtained from field tests. To fully describe the material behavior under the transient impact, the selected constitutive models take the failure and strain rate effect into consideration. A good agreement between the experimental observations and numerical results is achieved to prove the validity of the modelling method. The tests and simulations show that the impact-induced deformation on the human body is significantly reduced by using STG-modified EVA as the buffering material. The improvement of protective performance is attributed to better dynamic properties and more outstanding energy absorption capability of the composite foam.

Aiming at the problem that the blast load, generated by the explosion of the tandem-shaped-charge warhead, may cause damage to the warhead structure, material failure and even phase change, the material damage and structural protective capacity of the near-field blast load on the sandwich structure with foam-aluminum core were investigated by experimental test and numerical simulation. Firstly, the near-field blast test was performed to observe the deformation of sandwich structure and to collect the acceleration signals of fuze. Then, the mechanical properties of foam materials were tested, and a numerical model of blast load environment was established in the explicit dynamics software ANSYS/LS–DYNA 2020 R2. Finally, the experimental test data and simulation results were compared and analyzed. The strong agreement between the experiment and the simulation results indicates that the calculation method and simulation model are reasonable. Furthermore, the damage mode of foam-aluminum core materials with different densities and cell diameters under near-field blast load were carefully analyzed by simulation method. The simulation results show that, with the decrease of the density of foam-aluminum material and the increase of the cell chamber diameter, the deformation of the foam-aluminum panel gradually increases; the acceleration peak value of the fuze gradually decreases, and the pulse width barely changes and remains basically constant; the start and end times of the peak stress of the fuze cover gradually lag behind, and the peak stress hold-up time increases gradually; the maximum displacement deformation of the fuze cover decreases firstly and then increases. This work is expected to provide basic data and design guidelines for the graded foam sandwich panels of the blasting warhead fuze against the near-field blast load.

In order to solve the complexity of the structure, assembly process, component contact state and working process of the propellant actuator by conventional methods, a novel design method based on theoretical and numerical analysis was proposed. The internal ballistic model of the propellant actuator was established based on the classical internal ballistic theory, and the pressure–time characteristic curve of the propellant gas was then obtained. According to the characteristic curve, the dynamic characteristics of the piston under different design conditions of the shear slice were calculated by numerical simulation. The results show that the pressure–time characteristics of the internal ballistic model were in good agreement with the experimental data, indicating that the the internal ballistic model of the propellant actuator is reasonable. Additionally, the structure optimization design and drop safety of the propellant actuator were carried out using the finite element method. It was found that with increasing the propellant charge, the movement time of the piston decreases and the maximum velocity increases. Moreover, the critical values of the propellant charge are 5 mg, 6 mg, 7 mg for the thickness of the shear slice of 0.2 mm, 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm, respectively.
