The present study deals with the possibility to utilize blends of rubber modified epoxy and cyanate ester resins as thermal and mechanical resistant polymeric matrices for tagging of explosives. It has been shown that a composite material consisting of a polymeric matrix made of cyanate ester resin and brominated epoxy resin modified with carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile rubber, an ultraviolet light active pigment and a coding system represented by metal oxides mixture and iron powder bearing ferromagnetic properties could be successfully applied for tagging of explosives. ABSTRACT The current study is primarily focused on the possibility to utilize blends of epoxy and cyanate ester resins as thermal and mechanical resistant polymeric matrixes for tagging of explosives. The effects of cyanate ester resin content and epoxy resin type on mechanical and thermal properties of resulting materials have been investigated with the aim to find the optimum composition for the preparation of tagging elements. It has been shown that a composite material consisting of a brominated epoxy-cyanate ester matrix, an ultraviolet light active pigment, and a coding system represented by various metal oxides in a given ratio, and iron powder bearing ferromagnetic properties could be successfully applied for tagging of explosives. This study is primarily focused on the possibility to use a sulfur vulcanized low-molecular weight polybutadiene with isocyanate end groups in the main chain as a matrix for composite materials reinforced with common inorganic particulate fillers (calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, titanium dioxide modified with zinc, respectively). The isocyanate groups were used for a preliminary crosslinking of the oligomeric polybutadiene with glycerol as a three-functional crosslinker. The prepared polybutadiene-based polyurethane gel was subsequently vulcanized with sulfur. It has been shown that the vulcanized liquid polybutadiene could be successfully applied as the matrix for composite materials with inorganic filler. The resulting composite materials exhibited enhanced mechanical properties (tensile strength, flexural strength, hardness) and retain a high chemical resistance against hydrolysis and aqueous solutions of chemicals. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
