In this paper, an improved multicomponent lattice Boltzmann model is employed to investigate the impact of the gas properties, specifically the gas adiabatic index, on the thermodynamic effects of cavitation bubble collapse. The study focuses on analyzing the temperature evolution in the flow field and the resulting thermal effects on the surrounding wall. The accuracy of the developed model is verified through comparisons with analytical solutions of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation and the validation of the adiabatic law. Then, a thermodynamic model of cavitation bubble composed of two-mixed gases collapsing near a wall is established to explore the influence of the gas adiabatic index γ on the temperature behavior. Key findings include the observation that the γ affects the temperature of the first collapse significantly, while its influence on the second collapse is minimal. Additionally, the presence of low-temperature regions near the bubble surface during collapse impacts both bubble and wall temperatures. The study also demonstrates that the γ affects maximum and minimum wall temperatures. The results have implications for selecting specific non-condensable gas properties within cavitation bubbles for targeted cooling or heating purposes, including potential applications in electronic component cooling and environmental refrigeration.

Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide a solution for dam and bridges structural health information acquisition, but problems like effective damage-related information extraction also occur. Vision-based crack detection methods can replace traditional manual inspection and achieve fast and accurate crack detection. This paper thereby proposes a lightweight, real-time, pixel-level crack detection method based on an improved instance segmentation model. A lightweight backbone and a novel efficient prototype mask branch are proposed to decrease the complexity of the model and maintain the accuracy of the model. The proposed method attains an accuracy of 0.945 at 129 frames per second (FPS). Moreover, our model has smaller volume, lower computational requirements and is suitable for low-performance devices.

The internal temperature distribution and evolution in cavitation bubble can be investigated numerically by a thermal lattice Boltzmann method. The simulation results are consistent with the calculational results of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation and the temperature equation when the cavitation bubble collapses in an infinite liquid medium and satisfy Laplace’s law. In this work, a cavitation bubble collapsing near a solid wall is explored to investigate the characteristics and effects of the bubble temperature. The progress of the bubble temperature can be clearly captured from a two-dimensional temperature field. The results show that the bubble temperature can reach extremely high values during both its first and its second collapse. The change of the bubble temperature is highly related to the jet velocity and the liquid pressure. Furthermore, the effects on the bubble temperature of the offset parameters, the initial driving pressure and the initial bubble radius are also studied. The present findings are meaningful for the research of thermodynamics of cavitation.

The interaction mechanism between the cavitation bubble and a solid wall is a basic problem in bubble collapse prevention and application. In particular, when bubble collapse occurs near solid walls with arbitrarily complex geometries, it is difficult to efficiently establish a model and quantitatively explore the interaction mechanism between bubbles and solid walls. Based on the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method, a model for cavitation bubble collapse close to a solid wall was established using the pseudopotential multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model. Solid walls with arbitrarily complex geometries were introduced in the computational domain, and the fractal dimension was used to quantify the complexity of the solid wall. Furthermore, owing to the lack of periodicity, symmetry, spatial uniformity and obvious correlation in this process, the Minkowski functionals-based morphological analysis method was introduced to quantitatively describe the temporal evolution of collapsing bubble profiles and acquire effective information from the process. The interaction mechanism between the bubble and solid wall was investigated using evolutions of physical fields. In addition, the influences of the solid walls’ surface conditions and the position parameter on collapsing bubbles were discussed. These achievements provide an efficient tool for quantifying the morphological changes of the collapsing bubble.

Planar fractal microstructure is observed on the silver film treated by positive corona discharge for the first time. Due to the abundant positive ions driven by the electrical field of positive polarity, surface modification is mainly induced by the plasma oxidation effect, resulting in a large scale of dendritic pattern with self-similarity and hierarchy. In contrast, negative ions dominate the plasma-film interaction under negative corona discharge condition, leading to a different surface morphology without fractal characteristics. A growth model based on the modified diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) theory is proposed to describe the formation of the dendritic fractal structure, whilst the physics behind is attributed to the electric field directed diffusion of the positive ions around the surface roughness. Numerical simulation verifies the high density of the hot spot in the dendritic pattern, which may enable potential applications in fractal photonic metamaterials.

Defending against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the Internet is a fundamental problem. One practical approach to addressing DDoS attacks is to redirect all destination (e.g., via DNS or BGP) to a third-party, DDoS protection-as-a-service provider (e.g., Cloudflare and Akamai), which is well provisioned and equipped with proprietary filtering mechanisms to remove attack traffic before passing the remaining traffic to the destination. Although such an approach is appealing, as it requires no modification to the existing Internet infrastructure and can scale to handle very large attacks, recent industrial interviews with more than 100 interviewees from over 10 industry segments reveal that this approach alone is not sufficient, especially for large organizations (e.g., Web hosting companies and government) that cannot afford to allow third-parity security-service providers to terminate their network connections. Instead, these organizations have to rely on their ISPs to filter attack traffic. In this paper, we discuss the challenges faced by the ISPs in order to disrupt the Internet security-service market and sketch our solutions, powered by smart contracts.

To study the leakage situation of a liquid-filled pipe in long-term service, a model of a liquid-filled pipe embedded in an infinite porous medium as well as in a finite porous medium is designed. The principal motivation is to perform detailed quantitative analysis of the longitudinal guided wave propagating in a liquid-filled pipe embedded in a saturated porous medium. The problems of pipeline leakage and porosity as well as the media outside the pipe are solved to identify the characteristics of the guided wave in a more practical model. The characteristics of the guided wave are investigated theoretically and numerically, with special emphasis on the influence of porous medium parameters on the dispersion properties. Assuming the pipe is a cylindrical shell buried in an isotropic, homogeneous, and porous medium, the dispersion equations are established based on the elastic-dynamic equations and the modified Biot liquid-saturated porous theory. The characteristics of dispersion, time-domain waveform and attenuation curves varying with porous medium parameters, wrapping layer material, and thickness, are all analyzed. The increase in porosity decreases the partial mode phase velocity in the liquid-filled pipe embedded in the finite porous medium. The characteristics of attenuation are in good agreement with the dispersion curves and the time-domain waveform results.

The interaction between cavitation bubbles and solid surfaces is an important issue when investigating the mechanism of collapsing cavitation bubbles. The property of a solid surface has a great effect on the inception, development and collapse of the bubbles. In this work, we aim to investigate the effect of wettability on collapsing cavitation bubbles using the multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model. First, the pseudopotential multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann is improved by involving the piecewise linear equation of state and the improved forcing scheme modified by Li et al. The improved pseudopotential model is verified by the Laplace law. Next, the fluid–solid interaction in the model is employed to adjust the wettability of the solid surface. Moreover, the simulation of the collapse of the cavitation bubble near the solid surface is compared by the experiment results. Finally, the simulation of the collapsing cavitation bubbles near the solid surface with different wettability is also investigated. We find that the numerical results of the collapsing bubble are in good agreement with the experimental results. The simulation results show that the hydrophobicity of the solid surface can accelerate the cavitation bubble collapse. The hydrophilicity of the solid surface has little effect on the collapsing bubbles.

Authentication is a crucial security service for the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in versatile domains. The deployment of WSN devices in the untrusted open environment and the resource-constrained nature make the on-chip authentication an open challenge. The strong physical unclonable function (PUF) came in handy as light-weight authentication security primitive. In this paper, we present the first ring oscillator (RO) based strong physical unclonable function (PUF) with high resilience to both the electromagnetic (EM) side-channel attack and the support vector machine (SVM) modelling attack. By employing an RO based PUF architecture with the current starved inverter as the delay cell, the oscillation power is significantly reduced to minimize the emitted EM signal, leading to greatly enhanced immunity to the EM side-channel analysis attack. In addition, featuring superior reconfigurability due to the conspicuously simplified circuitries, the proposed implementation is capable of withstanding the SVM modelling attack by generating and comparing a large number of RO frequency pairs. The reported experimental results validate the prototype of a 9-stage RO PUF fabricated using standard 65 nm complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process. Operating at the supply voltage of 1.2 V and the frequency of 100 KHz, the fabricated RO PUF occupies a compact silicon area of 250 μ m 2 and consumes a power as low as 5.16 μ W per challenge-response pair (CRP). Furthermore, the uniqueness and the worst-case reliability are measured to be 50.17% and 98.30% for the working temperature range of −40∼120 ∘ C and the supply voltage variation of ±2%, respectively. Thus, the proposed PUF is applicable for the low power, low cost and secure WSN communications.

The investigations on transparent liquid (water)/solid (aluminum or steel) interface waves generated by laser pulse and detected with photoelastic effect method are presented. The results of acoustic velocity and wave form for all interface waves have shown that the optical detecting method based on photoelastic effect is very powerful for the research of liquid/solid interface waves.

It is widely accepted that an off-axis noncanonical vortex moves across the free-space diffracting Gaussian beam without rotation. But our analysis shows that the vortex swirls a while before it approaches infinite. By neglecting the divergence of the host beam, we focus on this rotation characteristics of the vortices in linear homogeneous media. For the symmetrical host beam, it is found that the vortex moves along an elliptical trajectory, while the topological charge and the angular momentum of the vortex core relative to the beam axis are conserved. For the asymmetrical host beam, the vortex trajectory is rather complicated, since the noncanonical parameter varies as the light propagates, resulting in topological charge inversion. But we find that the vortices are always confined in a rectangular area, and the rotation direction is determined by the topological charge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
