Objective: To describe the impact of the Koala project (Actively Controlling Target Oxygen) on clinical outcomes in patients born with less than 36 weeks of gestation, in two maternity hospitals, comparing before and after the strategy implementation. Methods: This is an intervention study with 100 preterm infants with gestational age ≤36 weeks, who used oxygen in two maternity hospitals between January 2020 and August 2021. One of the hospitals was a private institution and the other was philanthropic. The goal for the target oxygen saturation with this project was 91–95%. Comparisons between the two stages (before and after the implementation of the project) were made evaluating the outcomes of retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and deaths. The continuous variables were described using mean, median, standard deviation and interquartile interval. The significance level adopted was 5% and the software used was R Core Team 2021 (version 4.1.0). Results: After oxygen control use according to the Koala protocol, there was a significant reduction in the cases of retinopathy of prematurity (p<0.001) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (p<0.001). There were no deaths in the second stage, and there was a non-significant increase in the absolute number of necrotizing enterocolitis cases. Conclusions: The Koala project seems to be an effective and feasible strategy to reduce adverse situations in the management of premature children, but research with a greater sample is needed. Purpose: This study aimed to describe the growth, body protein status, and micronutrient biomarkers of Brazilian infants with cow's milk allergy (CMPA) at baseline and at 18 months of follow-up in comparison with their healthy peers. Methods: Thirty infants with CMPA younger than six months of age were included in this longitudinal study, and their nutritional status was compared with that of 24 non-allergic age-matched children. Anthropometric measurements were used to assess growth, and blood and urine samples were analyzed for protein and micronutrient status. Mixed linear models adjusted for birth weight, socioeconomic status, infant feeding at baseline, weightfor-age, C-reactive protein, serum albumin, micronutrient dietary supplementation, and salt consumption were employed to evaluate the evolution of nutritional parameters throughout the follow-up period. Results: Overall, the mean age of the children at enrolment was 2.9 (standard deviation 1.7) months, and 29 children (53.7%) were male. Infants with CMPA showed a higher prevalence of functional iron depletion (transferrin saturation <20) (p=0.027), lower serum ferritin (p=0.009), and lower urinary iodine (p=0.034) levels than non-allergic children at baseline. Patients with CMPA showed a higher increment in weight-for-age and length-for-age over time than those in the control group (p<0.01). Mixed linear analyses showed a significantly lower increase in serum vitamin B12 (s-B12) (p=0.001) and urinary iodine (p<0.001) concentrations over time compared to the control group. Conclusion: Infants with CMPA on a cow's milk elimination diet had a higher weight and length at 18 months of follow-up but showed signs of inadequate iron, iodine, and B-12 vitamin status. Introduction: People with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) have a reduced life expectancy especially because of respiratory infections. Patients with CF are included in the group of people at higher risk of severe disease mediated by Coronavirus 19 (COVID-19). Therefore, the understanding of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children with CF is of fundamental importance to provide accurate guidance to parents for the risks of this disease. Objectives: To describe the clinical aspects of children with CF infected with SARS-Cov-2. Methodology: This is a cohort and descriptive study of children with CF from 0 to 18 years old. The study was based on the collection of nasopharyngeal secretions for the polymerase chain reaction/Sars-Cov-2 test. Results: Forty-three children with CF were evaluated. Of these, 17 (39.5%) were positive and 26 (60.5%) negative for Sars-Cov-2. Most children had a mild illness with 100% of them not hospitalized and 85.7% of hospitalized children recovered. Conclusion: The results suggest that children with CF infected with SARS-CoV-2 are symptomatic and despite requiring hospitalization, they have a favorable clinical course with a good prognosis in those who do not have preexisting severe lung disease. The Prenatal Care and Birth Humanization Program (PHPN) establishes a minimum number of procedures to be provided to all pregnant women during prenatal care. This study aimed to analyze the quality of prenatal care in Sergipe based on the PHPN recommendations. This is a cross-sectional study, with a descriptive and analytic approach, using survey data from the Birth in Sergipe research, conducted from June 2015 to April 2016 with 768 puerperae proportionally distributed among all state maternity hospitals (n = 11). Data were collected from face- to-face interviews and patients' prenatal care cards. The results showed a high coverage of prenatal care (99.3%; n =763), but little more than half of these women started their prenatal care within 16 weeks of gestation (57%; n =435), and 74.7% (n = 570) had six or more visits. We noted that 16.6% (n = 127) of pregnant women were at high risk for complications and almost half continued monitoring prenatal care with professional nurses. Around 61.3% were advised about the maternity care service of reference for delivery, and 29.4% sought more than one health service for childbirth. We concluded that there was a high prenatal care coverage in Sergipe, however, with issues concerning its adaptation to the PHPN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Variable rates of HPV infection have been reported in healthy oral mucosa worldwide. The main objective of this study was to detect and genotype HPV infection in users and nonusers of drugs with clinically healthy mucosa from the Northeast Brazil. Samples from 105 patients were amplified using the primers MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+, and genotyping was performed by multiplex-PCR for HPV-6/11, 16 and 18. A total of 81.9% samples were positive. Among drug users, 84.5% presented the virus and 20.4% showed multiple infections. Among non-drug users, 78.7% were positive and 13.5% had multiple infections. Limited information is available on oral HPV in Brazilian population, especially for drug users, and our results showed higher HPV infection rates in both users and nonusers of drugs. More studies and researches focused on drug users including factors like sexual behavior, nutrition and cultural habits are necessary to enhance the comprehension of this relationship, and develop preventive strategies. Background: Severe maternal morbidity is increasingly known as a useful indicator of the safety and quality of maternal care, and may affect the mother's mental health. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between severe maternal morbidity (near miss) and symptoms of postpartum depression. Method: Descriptive study of prospective cohort. The sample consisted of a total of 549 puerperal women from two public maternity hospitals in the state of Sergipe. We applied the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to identify the prevalence of postpartum depression. The statistical analysis was performed using chi-square test of U-Mann-Whitney and the Spearman rank correlation coefficient, with significance level of a = 0.05%. Results: 156 (56%) of the mothers exposed to severe maternal obesity, and 45 (17%) of the non-exposed mothers showed a strong association and greater chance (ORC: 24.0; 95% CI: 7.23-79.7) to develop postpartum depression. Conclusion: Severe maternal morbidity has a negative impact on women's mental health, and increases the vulnerability to mental illness. Background:Micronutrient deficiencies are the most prevalent form of malnutrition worldwide. Although commonly related to underweight, micronutrient deficiencies can occur in both normal and overweight children in medium- and low-income populations undergoing nutritional transition. Objective:To describe haemoglobin and micronutrient levels in infants from a low-income area in Brazil in relation to their weight-for-length Z-score. Methods:A cross-sectional survey was undertaken of 2–11-month-old infants in Laranjeiras, a small urban community in North-east-Brazil between April 2009 and February 2010. Anthropometry and assays for haemoglobin, ferritin, plasma zinc, copper and selenium and erythrocyte zinc and copper concentrations were investigated. Results:The total number of full-term infants born in the study period was 222, of whom 153 were available for the study. Three (2%) children were wasted, 98 (66%) were of normal weight, 37 (25%) were at risk of overweight and 11 (7%) were overweight or obese. Nearly all (97%) children had at least one micronutrient deficiency, 102 (67%) had anaemia, 86 (58%) and 100 (67%) had plasma and erythrocyte zinc deficiency, respectively, and 7 (5%) and 113 (76%) had plasma and erythrocyte copper deficiency, respectively. 138 (91%) children had selenium deficiency. Except for plasma zinc, the proportion of infants with micronutrient deficiencies did not differ by weight-for-length status. Conclusions:The increased risk of overweight and micronutrient deficiencies in this population highlights the need to address the double burden of excess weight with micronutrient deficiencies in medium- and low-income settings. In Brazil, hospital birth care is available to all, but there are important differences between hospitals in the public and private sectors, geographical regions and capitals/inland cities, resulting in inequalities of infant health. To assess the hospital structure for birth care in Brazil and analyze hospital adequacy to care for newborns according to levels of risk. Data were collected as part of a nationwide hospital-based cohort study, 'Birth in Brazil'. The hospitals were classified according to whether they had a neonatal intensive care unit and divided into two models of governance: public and private financing. Three structure domains were assessed: human resources, medications and equipment for post-natal women and newborn emergency care. Newborns were classified according to the obstetric risk. There are more NICUs in private hospitals and they cater mostly for low obstetric risk newborns; the public sector serves 50% of at-risk patients in hospitals without an NICU. The differences between hospital service structures according to geographic region and capital/inland cities were evident. Hospitals in less developed regions and inland cities had poorer adequacy in the three domains. The distribution of neonatal care to Brazilian infants varied between the public and private sectors. The public sector offered less complex services for newborns at risk, and infants without obstetric risk were born in facilities with an NICU, creating the possibility of unnecessary intervention, especially in the private sector. Objectives: to describe the characteristics of pregnancies, deliveries and the status of newborns at birth in the Metropolitan Area ofAracaju. The main demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and details of the medical care given to the population under study are presented. Methods: a cross-sectional study was carried Out of all deliveries in the maternity hospitals of Aracaju, in the State of Sergipe, Brazil, from March-July 2005. All mothers who gave birth to a single live baby were interviewed regarding their background, reproductive history and sexual life. Hospital records, including the babies' weight, height and cephalic perimeter, were obtained and all information transferred to a standardised questionnaire. Data were compared to equivalent findings from other studies in Brazil. Results: there were 4746 single live births during the study period in Aracaju. The majority of mothers (69%) were considered poor (income <3 minimum wages). Adolescent mothers comprised 20.6% of the population. The figures for low birth-weight (7.2%) and prematurity (7.7%) were similar. Almost all mothers (98.3%) received prenatal care, 76.0% from public services the Sistema Unico de Scthde (SUS)-which financed most deliveries. Caesarean sections accounted for 31.6% of all deliveries. Conclusions: deliveries in Aracaju's showed good performance with a lower rate for Caesarean sections, prematurity, and low birth-weight than Ribeirâo Preto, São Luis and Pelotas. Introduction: The clinical outcomes of leprosy include complications such as physical disabilities and deformities that vary according to the degree of impairment of nerve trunks. Knowledge of the factors that lead to the development of these complications is important for disability prevention programs. This study aimed to evaluate clinical factors associated with the occurrence of physical disability in leprosy cases. Methodology: This was a retrospective study of 2,358 cases of leprosy in Aracaju, northeast Brazil, between 2001 and 2011. Analysis was done using the Chi-square test and logistic regression model. Results: Significant factors associated with disability were found to be male gender, having more than two affected nerves, multibacillary leprosy classification, leprosy reaction, and lepromatous leprosy. The multivariate analysis revealed that the associated factors included having more than two affected nerves, leprosy reaction (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.02, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.36 to 3.01), the multibacillary form (aOR: 2.74, 95% CI: 1.84 to 4.08), and lepromatous leprosy (aOR: 4.87, 95% CI: 2.86 to 16.08). Conclusions: The number of affected nerves, leprosy reaction, operational classification, and clinical presentation were identified as the main factors associated with the development of disability in leprosy patients.
