Background: The literature on planning ability in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) provides no clarity on whether their ability matches their mental age (MA) or not. Perhaps can planning experience explain the mixed results. The current study investigated to what extent cognitive abilities and life experience can explain everyday planning ability in individuals with ID and to what extent results from everyday planning tasks support the developmental or the difference model of ID. Method: Planning tests, cognitive ability tasks and a self‐rated life experience form were administered to 71 adolescents with ID and 62 children with a typical development matched on MA. Results: Adolescents with ID exhibited planning ability according to their MA. Regression analyses showed that the predictors of planning differed between the groups. The cognitive measures could predict planning in both groups, but life experience only contributed positively to planning in the MA group, whereas chronological age was negatively correlated with successful planning in the ID group. Conclusions and discussion: The results support the difference model of ID. When matched on MA, the individuals with ID will solve the planning task in a qualitatively different manner. Additionally, the participants with ID could not utilise their life experience when solving the planning task, contrary to the MA group. Practitioners should be aware that individuals with ID might need more everyday planning training throughout adolescence. To support adolescents with ID, practitioners may focus on supporting the individual's cognitive abilities rather than relying on their prior knowledge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This project was initiated to evaluate the effect of alternative process temperatures to 38 °C at the anaerobic digestion step in a Swedish wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) treating mixed sludge. The efficiency of the different temperatures was evaluated with respect to biogas production, volume of sludge produced and nutrient content in the reject water to find the optimum temperature for the WWTP as a whole. Three temperatures, 34 °C, 38 °C and 42 °C, were compared in laboratory scale. Increasing the process temperature to 42 °C resulted in process instability, reduced methane yield, accumulation of volatile fatty acids and higher treatment costs of the reject water. By decreasing the temperature to 34 °C, slightly higher sludge mass was observed and a lower gas production rate, while the specific methane produced remained unchanged compared to 38 °C but foaming was observed at several occasions. In summary 38 °C was proved to be the most favourable temperature for the anaerobic digestion process treating mixed sludge when the evaluation included effects such as foaming, sludge mass and quality of the reject water. Phytophthora root rot (PRR) disease afflicts significant economic losses to the Fraser fir Christmas tree industry. In previous surveys conducted in 1972 and from 1997 to 1998 in North Carolina, the incidence of PRR was ∼9.5% withPhytophthora cinnamomiidentified as the predominant causal species isolated from infected roots of Fraser fir. Due to increased use of out-of-state planting stock since 2000, we suspected increased diversity ofPhytophthoraspecies. During 2014, we surveyed Fraser fir Christmas tree plantations in the Southern Appalachians of North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia to determine the occurrence of pathogenic root-rotting species ofPhytophthora. A weighted sampling strategy based on Christmas tree acreage was deployed to collect symptomatic Fraser fir roots from 103 commercial production fields in 14 counties. Six species ofPhytophthorawere isolated from infected roots sampled from 82 sites in 13 counties.Phytophthora cinnamomi,P. cryptogeaandP. pinirepresented 70.3%, 23.1% and 1.1% of the 91 isolates.Phytophthora citrophthora,P. europaeaandP. sansomeanaaccounted for the remaining 5.5% of the isolates and have not been identified in previously published Fraser fir surveys conducted in the region. The efficacy of stump treatment with 40% urea solution and spore suspension of Phlebiopsis gigantea against primary infection by Heterobasidion spp. on hybrid larch ( Larix × eurolepis) was tested in two field studies in southern Sweden. In the first study, stumps treated with urea or P. gigantea were sampled by cutting a cross-section disc after 3 months following exposure to natural conditions, and in the second study, stumps treated with only P. gigantea were sampled after 2 months. Spore traps made from hybrid larch, Norway spruce ( Picea abies) and Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris) were used to estimate the abundance of ambient spores of Heterobasidion spp. in the second study. Urea significantly reduced infection frequency of Heterobasidion spp. compared to the control. Phlebiopsis gigantea was less effective at reducing infection frequency in the first study than in the second study. Infections were caused by both H. parviporum and H. annosum sensu stricto. The amount of H. annosum infection in proportion to Heterobasidion spp. was significantly lower on the stumps treated with P. gigantea compared to the control; however, the proportion of H. parviporum on the treated stumps was not higher than the control in the first study. Spore traps made of Scots pine had a significantly higher frequency of infection than Norway spruce and hybrid larch. Only the spore traps made of hybrid larch showed significant correlation with the control stumps in terms of relative infected area. Conclusively, it seems prudent to protect hybrid larch stumps from primary infection by Heterobasidion spp., and both urea and P. gigantea can be recommended as stump treatment agents on hybrid larch, even if urea seemed to present more stable results. Two species of the tree pathogenic fungus Heterobasidion spp. exist in Sweden, Heterobasidion annosum s.s. and Heterobasidion parviporum. Both species are known to infect Norway spruce ( Picea abies). The aim of the study was to examine the interspecific competition between H. annosum s.s. and H. parviporum as well as their colonization rate in fresh Norway spruce wood. Equal amount of conidiospores from each species was sprayed together on 30 fresh, previously uninfected, Norway spruce billets. After incubation in a greenhouse, the proportion of Heterobasidion spp. colonies belonging to each species was recorded. Of the 196 colonies isolated from the upper part of billets, 195 were H. parviporum. All isolated colonies further down in the billets were H. parviporum. To study the colonization rate, H. annosum s.s. and H. parviporum were sprayed alone on 30 spruce billets each, incubated and growth recorded both vertically and horizontally. H. parviporum grew further down in the billets (p = 0.008) and covered a larger area (p < 0.001) than H. annosum s.s. While H. annosum s.s. and H. parviporum both infected fresh Norway spruce wood H. parviporum outgrew and outcompeted H. annosum s.s during the early colonization stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural colonization by the root and butt rot causing fungi Heterobasidion spp. on Norway spruce ( Picea abies) stumps following thinning and treatment with the biological control agent Phlebiopsis gigantea was investigated on three sites in southern Sweden 6 years after treatment. The fully treated stumps and control stumps were excavated and sampled to compare the survival of Heterobasidion spp. in the long term. Six years post-treatment, 47 and 11% of untreated and treated stumps, respectively, had Heterobasidion infection. There was no difference in the relative infected area in discs collected from the butt and the roots for the different treatments. Control efficacy was 83% for treated stumps. After 6 years, there were no apparent differences between the remaining infections in treated compared with those in untreated stumps regarding the number of colonies, their size or relative infection area. Although infections, 3 months after treatment with P. gigantea, were significantly fewer and smaller than in untreated stumps, Heterobasidion inoculum can survive for at least 6 years in the stump and, when it does, constitute a risk for neighbouring trees. Two Rotstop® preparations, one containing a Phlebiopsis gigantea strain from Finland (Rotstop F) and the other one from Sweden (Rotstop S), were used in different concentrations to treat thinning stumps of Picea abies against spore infections by Heterobasidion spp. in southern Sweden. Trees were cut on three sites during the summer of 2004, and 285 stumps were treated manually ensuring 100% coverage. Spore concentrations in the treatment suspensions were ca 5 × 106 and 10 × 106 spores/l, and approximately 10 ml of suspension was applied per 100 cm2 of stump surface. An additional 31 stumps on one of the sites were treated mechanically with Rotstop S; in this treatment the spore concentration was high, about 20 × 106 spores/l, but the coverage was incomplete. Three months later there was a significant reduction in frequency and relative areas of Heterobasidion spp. infections on stumps with manual treatment compared with the untreated stumps. However, there was no significant difference between the preparations or the concentration of active ingredient in terms of their reduction of Heterobasidion infection. Mechanical treatment with incomplete coverage failed to control infection. Therefore, in conditions of moderate Heterobasidion spore load in the environment there seems to be no reason to use higher concentrations of P. gigantea in the treatment of spruce stumps. The natural establishment of the root and butt rot causing fungus Heterobasidion annosum s.l. on Norway spruce ( Picea abies) thinning stumps treated with Phlebiopsis gigantea was investigated on seven sites in southern Sweden. The trees were cut during summertime and the stumps were treated with different patterns simulating the effect of mechanical stump treatment with a single-grip harvester. Sampling was conducted 3 and 12 months after treatment. At both samplings, the best control was obtained when 100% of the stump surface was covered by P. gigantea: in contrast, untreated control stumps showed the highest incidences of H. annosum s.l. infection at both sampling times. However, 30 and 26% of the fully covered stumps at the first and second samplings, respectively, were diseased, and question the efficacy of treating Norway spruce stumps with this biological control agent in Sweden. This paper reviews research on deaf-blind individuals, primarily from behavioral and communicative points of view. Inclusion in the population of deaf-blind is qualified by describing a variety of subgroups and genetically based syndromes associated with deafblindness. Sensory assessment procedures - based primarily on residual capacities - are appraised. Consequences for everyday life are described briefly. Non-sensory, alternative classificatory schemes and procedures are presented and the results from behavior modification procedures used for correcting maladaptive behaviors are summarized. Methods for communicating tactilely are described and evaluated. Attention is also drawn to some suggestions regarding learning of alphabetic codes and sign acquisition. The incidence of Heterobasidion annosum was examined in three young hybrid larch (Larix x eurolepis) plantations in southern Sweden that were established after felling Norway spruce (Picea abies) stands heavily infected by the fungus. The incidence of H. annosum was 7 %,, 33 %, and 70 %, respectively, in the 2-, 3-, and 5-year-old plantations. In all plantations, H. annosum was the most frequent rotcausing fungus (81%,) and all isolates tested belonged to the P-intersterility group. No visible external differences between infected and healthy seedlings were found on any site. Both tap and lateral roots were infected by H. annosum. The results suggest that when hybrid larch is planted on sandy soils after clear felling of Norway spruce heavily infected by H. annosum, it is very susceptible to infection by H. annosum. Furthermore, transfer of H. annosum from infected stumps to hybrid larch occurs during the first few years after planting on scarified sites. Abstract Background Hearing impairment is one of the most frequent chronic conditions. Persons with a hearing impairment (PHI) have various experiences during their ‘journey’ through hearing loss. In our previous studies we have developed a ‘patient journey’ model of PHI and their communication partners (CPs). We suggest this model could be useful in internet-based pre-fitting counseling of a person with hearing disability (PHD). Methods/Design A randomized controlled trial (RCT) with waiting list control (WLC) design will be used in this study. One hundred and fifty eight participants with self-reported hearing disability (that is, score >20 in the Hearing Handicap Questionnaire (HHQ)) will be recruited to participate in this study. They will be assigned to one of two groups (79 participants in each group): (1) Information and counseling provision using the ‘patient journey’ model; and (2) WLC. They will participate in a 30 day (4 weeks) internet-based counseling program based on the ‘patient journey’ model. Various outcome measures which focuses on hearing disability, depression and anxiety, readiness to change and acceptance of hearing disability will be administered pre (one week before) and post (one week and six months after) intervention to evaluate the effectiveness of counseling. Discussion Internet-based counseling is being introduced as a viable option for audiological rehabilitation. We predict that the ‘patient journey’ model will have several advantages during counseling of a PHD. Such a program, if proven effective, could yield cost and time-efficient ways of managing hearing disability. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration System NCT01611129.

A general working memory system for ease of language understanding (ELU, Roumlnnberg, 2003a) is presented. The purpose of the system is to describe and predict the dynamic interplay between explicit and implicit cognitive functions, especially in conditions of poorly perceived or poorly specified linguistic signals. In relation to speech understanding, the system based on (1) the quality and precision of phonological representations in long-term memory, (2) phonologically mediated lexical access speed, and (3) explicit, storage, and processing resources. If there is a mismatch between phonological information extracted from the speech signal and the phonological information represented in long-term memory, the system is assumed to produce a mismatch signal that invokes explicit processing resources. In the present paper, we focus on four aspects of the model which have led to the current, updated version: the language generality assumption; the mismatch assumption; chronological age; and the episodic buffer function of rapid, automatic multimodal binding of phonology (RAMBPHO). We evaluate the language generality assumption in relation to sign language and speech, and the mismatch assumption in relation to signal processing in hearing aids. This paper focuses on the role of cognition in visual language processing in the deaf and hard of hearing. Although there are modality-specific cognitive findings in the literature on comparisons across speech communication modes and language (sign and speech), there is an impressive bulk of evidence that supports the notion of general modality-free cognitive functions in speech and sign processing. A working-memory framework is proposed for the cognitive involvement in language understanding (sign and speech). On the basis of multiple sources of behavioural and neuroscience data, four important parameters for language understanding are described in some detail: quality and precision of phonology, long-term memory access speed, degree of explicit processing, and general processing and storage capacity. Their interaction forms an important parameter space, and general predictions and applications can be derived for both spoken and signed language conditions. The model is mathematically formulated at a general level, hypothetical ease-of-language-understanding (ELU) functions are presented, and similarities and differences from current working-memory and speech perception formulations are pointed out. Evidence suggests that cognitive capacity predicts the ability to benefit from specific compression release settings in non-linear digital hearing instruments. Previous studies have investigated the predictive value of various cognitive tests in relation to aided speech recognition in noise using compression release settings that have been experienced for a certain period. However, the predictive value of cognitive tests with new settings, to which the user has not had the opportunity to become accustomed, has not been studied. In the present study, we compare the predictive values of two cognitive tests, reading span and letter monitoring, in relation to aided speech recognition in noise for 32 habitual hearing instrument users using new compression release settings. We found that reading span was a strong predictor of speech recognition in noise with new compression release settings. This result generalizes previous findings for experienced test settings to new test settings, for both speech recognition in noise tests used in the present study, Hagerman sentences and HINT. Letter monitoring, on the other hand, was not found to be a strong predictor of speech recognition in noise with new compression release settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
