Abstract

The Tunka-Grande experiment is a scintillation array with about 0.5 km$^2$ sensitive area at Tunka Valley, Siberia, for measuring charged particles and muons in extensive air showers (EASs). Tunka-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray studies in the energy range 10 PeV to about 1 EeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. This paper attempts to provide a synopsis of the current results of the experiment. In particular, the reconstruction of the all-particle energy spectrum in the range of 10 PeV to 1 EeV based on experimental data from four observation seasons is presented.

Abstract

The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The pilot TAIGA-1 complex is located in the Tunka valley, 50 km west from the southern tip of the lake Baikal.

Abstract

The corrected dependence of the mean depth of the EAS maximum $X_{max}$ on the energy was obtained from the data of the Tunka-133 array for 7 years and the TAIGA-HiSCORE array for 2 years. The parameter $\langle\ln A\rangle$, characterizing the mean mass compositon was derived from these results. The differential energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays in the energy range of $2\cdot 10^{14}$ – $2\cdot 10^{16}$ eV was reconstructed using the new parameter $Q_{100}$ the Cherenkov light flux at the core distance 100 m. Change of the parameter for the energy reconstuction for the TAIGA-HiSCORE from $Q_{200}$ to $Q_{100}$ provides a decreasing energy threshold for the spectrum to about 200 TeV.

Abstract

The importance and advantages of the hybrid approach developed within the TAIGA project for studying the high-energy section of the spectrum of gamma radiation in the Universe are discussed. The pilot complex of the TAIGA gamma observatory with an area of 1 km $${}^{2}$$ is briefly described along with the lines of its development, and the first results obtained on this basis are given.

Abstract

The mean values of the momenta and emission angles of charged pions and protons in the laboratory frame are presented both for the total ensemble of interactions between 4.2-GeV/c protons and a carbon nucleus and for six groups of events characterized by different degrees of collision centrality. The distributions with respect to the total and the transverse momentum are presented for the particles being studied, along with the longitudinal-rapidity distributions. Our experimental data are compared with the predictions of the cascade-evaporation model and of two versions of the refined FRITIOF model. It is shown that, as the degree of collision centrality becomes higher, the mean momenta and rapidities of secondaries decrease, the transverse momenta remain virtually unchanged, and the mean angles of particle emission increase. This is consistent with the pattern of particle cascading in nuclei. However, the mean transverse momentum 〈p t 〉 of participant protons that was obtained on the basis of the cascade-evaporation model decreases with increasing degree of collision centrality, in contrast to what is observed in our experiment. A satisfactory description of experimental data is on the basis of the refined FRITIOF model taking into account Δ+ and Δ0 isobars. The stopping power of carbon nuclei for 4.2-GeV/c protons is also determined.

Abstract

New experimental data obtained for the multiplicities of charged pions and protons from the interaction of 4.2-GeV/c protons with a carbon nucleus by using the 2-m propane bubble chamber installed at the High Energy Laboratory (Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna) are presented versus the degree of collision centrality. The parameter Q defined for each individual event as the difference of the total multiplicities of positively and negatively charged particles without allowing for the multiplicity of evaporated protons whose momentum is less than 0.3 GeV/c is taken for a criterion of the degree of collision centrality. It is shown that, with increasing Q, the multiplicity of positively charged pions and the multiplicity of participant protons from the target nucleus grow considerably; concurrently, the multiplicity of negatively charged pions remains at nearly the same level, while the mean multiplicity of evaporated protons decreases sharply. Our experimental data are compared with the results of calculations based on the cascade-evaporation model and the modified FRITIOF model. Within the FRITIOF model, nonnucleon degrees of freedom in nuclei (Δ+, Δ0 isobars) are taken into account for the first time, and the resulting description of the features of secondary particles appears to be by and large satisfactory.

9. Inelastic interactions of protons and alphas with nuclei at a momentum of 4.5 GeV/c per nucleon accompanied by fast hadron backward emission

Abstract

A study of general characteristics of events accompanied by the emission of fast hadrons into the backward hemisphere in the laboratory system has been carried out for interactions of protons and alpha-particles with nuclei at a momentum of 4.5 GeV/c per nucleon. A unified description of multiplicity distributions of these hadrons for interactions with light and heavy emulsion nuclei has been found. It is shown that the selection of events with fast hadrons flying backward leads to a complete destruction of light nuclei and a strong desintegration of heavy nuclei. A comparison with the cascade-evaporation model, carried out for αA interactions, shows that the model overestimates the multiplication of secondary particles, particularly for light target nuclei.

Abstract

New experimental data on proton-nucleus interactions in emulsion at primary momentum 4.5 GeV/c are presented and discussed. The data are systematically compared with predictions of the cascade-evaporation model. The directions of development of the cascade-evaporation model in a region of incident momenta are considered, and some suggestions are made for giving it more precision.
