Radiofrequency (RF) is a tissue destruction technique that consists of the application of an electromagnetic current through a specific probe directly on the tissues. The only currently validated indication in gastroenterology is the treatment of endobrachyoesophagus. In proctology, several indications are currently being evaluated, notably in the treatment of hemorrhoidal pathology. For internal hemorrhoidal pathology, the current era is looking for minimally invasive techniques as an alternative to the Milligan and Morgan technique. RF is one of the most recent techniques being evaluated and consists of applying an RF current to the internal hemorrhoidal tissue to induce its involution. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and allows, on average, a return to work within three days. Post-operative pain is of low intensity since two thirds of the patients will not need painkillers of level II. Studies have shown that it allows an improvement in symptoms in more than 60% of cases with a high satisfaction rate. Complications concern only 17% of patients and are mostly treated as outpatients. To date, however, there are no published randomized studies comparing RF to any other technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
