Among the environmental factors that have an effect on the isotopic signature of tree rings, the specific impact of soil moisture on the Δ13C and, in particular, the δ18O ratios has scarcely been investigated. We studied the effects of soil type and soil moisture (from moderately moist [Cambisol] to wet [Gleysol]) on the growth and isotopic signature of tree rings of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] H. Karst.), a widely distributed forest tree species in Central Europe, at a small spatial scale in a typical mature forest plantation in the low mountain ranges of Western Germany. The δ18O ratios were lower in rings of trees growing at the wettest microsite (Gleysol) than in tree rings from the microsite with moderately moist soil (Cambisol). This indicates higher uptake rates of 18O-unenriched soil water at the Gleysol microsite and corresponds to less negative soil water potentials and higher transpiration rates on the Gleysol plots. Contrary to our expectations, the basal area increments, the Δ13C ratios and the intrinsic water-use efficiency (calculated on the basis of δ13C) did not differ significantly between the Cambisol and the Gleysol microsites. For average values of each microsite and year investigated, we found a significantly positive correlation between δ13C and δ18O, which indicates a consistent stomatal control over gas exchange along the soil moisture gradient at comparable relative air humidity in the stand. As δ18O ratios of tree rings integrate responses of wood formation to soil moisture over longer periods of time, they may help to identify microsites differing in soil water availability along small-scale gradients of soil moisture under homogeneous climatic conditions and to explain the occurrence of particular tree species along those gradients in forest stands. Tree water use is a key variable in forest eco-hydrological studies and is often monitored by sap flow measurements. Upscaling these point measurements to the stand or catchment level, however, is still challenging. Due to the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of stand structure and soil water supply, extensive measuring campaigns are needed to determine stand water use from sap flow measurements alone. Therefore, many researchers apply water balance models to estimate stand transpiration. To account for the effects of limited soil water supply on stand transpiration, models commonly refer to plant water stress functions, which have rarely been parameterized for forest trees. The aim of this study was to parameterize the Feddes water stress model for Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.). After successful calibration and validation of the soil hydrological model HYDRUS-1D, we combined root-zone water potential simulations with a new plant water stress factor derived from sap flow measurements at two plots of contrasting soil moisture regimes. By calibrating HYDRUS-1D against our sap flow data, we determined the critical limits of soil water supply. Drought stress reduced the transpiration activity of mature Norway spruce at root-zone pressure heads <-4100 cm, while aeration stress was not observed. Using the recalibrated Feddes parameters in HYDRUS-1D also improved our water balance simulations. We conclude that the consideration of sap flow information in soil hydrological modeling is a promising way towards more realistic water balance simulations in forest ecosystems. Granier-type thermal dissipation probes are common instruments for quantifying tree water use in forest hydrological studies. Estimating sapflow using Granier-type sapflow sensors requires determining the maximum temperature gradient (ΔTmax) between the heated probe and the reference probe below. ΔTmax represents a state of zero sap flux, which was originally assumed to occur each night leading to a ΔTmax determination on a daily basis. However, researchers have proven that, under certain conditions, sapflow may continue throughout the night. Therefore alternative approaches to determining ΔTmax have been developed. Multiple ΔTmax approaches are now in use; however, sapflow estimates remain imprecise because the empirical equation that transfers the raw temperature signal (ΔT) to sap flux density (Fd) is strongly sensitive to ΔTmax. In this study, we analyze the effects of different ΔTmax determination approaches on sub-daily, daily and (intra-)seasonal Fd estimations. On this basis, we quantify the uncertainty of sapflow calculations, which is related to the raw signal processing. We show that the ΔTmax determination procedure has a major influence on absolute ΔTmax values and the respective sap flux density computations. Consequently, the choice of the ΔTmax determination approach may be a significant source of uncertainty in sapflow estimations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European heat wave of 2018 was characterized by extraordinarily dry and hot spring and summer conditions in many central and northern European countries. The average temperatures from June to August 2018 were the second highest since 1881. Accordingly, many plants, especially trees, were pushed to their physiological limits. However, while the drought and heat response of field crops and younger trees have been well investigated in laboratory experiments, little is known regarding the drought and heat response of mature forest trees. In this study, we compared the response of a coniferous and a deciduous tree species, located in western and central–western Germany, to the extreme environmental conditions during the European heat wave of 2018. Combining classic dendroecological techniques (tree–ring analysis) with measurements of the intra–annual stem expansion (dendrometers) and tree water uptake (sap flow sensors), we found contrasting responses of spruce and oak trees. While spruce trees developed a narrow tree ring in 2018 combined with decreasing correlations of daily sap flow and dendrometer parameters to the climatic parameters, oak trees developed a ring with above–average tree–ring width combined with increasing correlations between the daily climatic parameters and the parameters derived from sap flow and the dendrometer sensors. In conclusion, spruce trees reacted to the 2018 heat wave with the early completion of their growth activities, whereas oaks appeared to intensify their activities based on the water content in their tree stems.
