1. Saturn's inner satellites : orbits, masses and the chaotic motion of Atlas from new Cassini imaging observations

Abstract

We present numerically-derived orbits and mass estimates for the inner Saturnian satellites, Atlas, Prometheus, Pandora, Janus and Epimetheus from a fit to 2580 new Cassini ISS astrometric observations spanning February 2004 to August 2013. The observations are provided in a supplementary table. We estimate GM_ Atlas=0.384+/-0.001 x 10^(-3)km^3s^(-2), a value 13% smaller than the previously published estimate but with an order of magnitude reduction in the uncertainty. We also find GM_ Prometheus=10.677+/-0.006x10(-3)km^3s^(-2), GM_Pandora=9.133+/-0.009x10^(-3)km^3s^(-2), GM_Janus=126.51+/-0.03x10^(-3)km^3s^(-2) and GM_Epimetheus=35.110+/-0.009x10^(-3)km^3s^(-2), consistent with previously published values, but also with significant reductions in uncertainties. We show that Atlas is currently librating in both the 54:53 co-rotation-eccentricity resonance (CER) and the 54:53 inner Lindblad (ILR) resonance with Prometheus, making it the latest example of a coupled CER-ILR system, in common with the Saturnian satellites Anthe, Aegaeon and Methone, and possibly Neptune's ring arcs. We further demonstrate that Atlas's orbit is chaotic, with a Lyapunov time of ~10 years, and show that its chaotic behaviour is a direct consequence of the coupled resonant interaction with Prometheus, rather than being an indirect effect of the known chaotic interaction between Prometheus and Pandora. We provide an updated analysis of the second-order resonant perturbations involving Prometheus, Pandora and Epimetheus based on the new observations, showing that these resonant arguments are librating only when Epimetheus is the innermost of the co-orbital pair, Janus and Epimetheus. We also find evidence that the known chaotic changes in the orbits of Prometheus and Pandora are not confined to times of apse anti-alignement., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

Context. Neptune's incomplete ring arcs have been stable since their discovery in 1984 by stellar occultation. Although these structures should be destroyed within a few months through differential Keplerian motion, imaging data over the past couple of decades have shown that these structures remain stable. Aims. We present the first SPHERE near-infrared observations of Neptune's ring arcs taken at 2.2 μm (broadband Ks) with the IRDIS camera at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in August 2016. Methods. The images were aligned using the ephemerides of the satellite Proteus and were suitably co-added to enhance ring and satellite signals. Results. We analyse high-angular-resolution near-infrared images of Neptune's ring arcs obtained in 2016 at the ESO VLT-UT3 with the adaptive-optics-fed camera SPHERE-IRDIS. We derive accurate mean motion values for the arcs and the nearby satellite Galatea. The trailing arcs Fraternité and Égalité have been stable since they were last observed in 2007. Furthermore, we confirm the fading away of the leading arcs Courage and Liberté. Finally, we confirm the mismatch between the arcs' position and the 42:43 inclined and eccentric corotation resonances with Galatea, thus demonstrating that no 42:43 corotation model works to explain the azimuthal confinement of the arcs' materiel. Abstract

Screening newborns for cystic fibrosis (CF) is considered to be an ethical undertaking in regions with a significant incidence of the condition. Current screening protocols result in recognition of infants with an equivocal diagnosis. A survey of European practice suggested inconsistencies in the evaluation and management of these infants.We have undertaken a consensus process using a modified Delphi method. This has enabled input of CF specialists from a wide geographical area to a rigorous process that has provided a clear pathway to a consensus statement. A core group produced 21 statements, which were modified over a series of three rounds (including a meeting arranged at the European CF Conference). A final document of 19 statements was produced, all of which achieved a satisfactory level of consensus. The statements cover four themes; sweat testing, further assessments and investigations, review arrangements and database.This consensus document will provide guidance to CF specialists with established screening programmes and those who are in the process of implementing newborn screening in their region.

46. DIFFERENT NUTRIENT INTAKE AND PREVALENCE OF GASTROINTESTINAL COMORBIDITIES IN WOMEN WITH ENDOMETRIOSIS.

Abstract

Even though endometriosis presents one of the most common gynaecological diseases, the pathogenesis is insufficiently studied. Besides immunologic, inflammatory or oxidative processes, recent studies also suggest an influence of nutrition on disease onset and progression. Because data about the actual nutrient intake of endometriosis patients are scarce, we aimed to examine the actual nutrient intake and potential influencing factors in these women. A total of 156 women with endometriosis (EM) and 52 age-matched controls were included in this retrospective case-control study. All women filled in a validated food frequency questionnaire to acquire the nutrient intake of the past 12 months and a disease-related questionnaire for the determination of disease status, clinical symptoms and comorbidities. Patients with endometriosis suffered significantly more from diet-related comorbidities like food intolerances (25.6% versus 7.7%; P = 0.009) and allergies (57% versus 31%; P < 0.001) compared to controls. Also gastrointestinal symptoms, including constipation, flatulence, pyrosis, diarrhea or frequent defecation, were higher in the EM group (77% versus 29%; P < 0.001). The nutrient intake of patients with endometriosis differed significantly compared to controls with a significantly lower ingestion of organic acids (P = 0.006), maltose (P = 0.0.16), glycogen (P = 0.035), tetradecenoic acid (P = 0.041), methionine (P = 0.046), lysine (P = 0.048), threonine (P = 0.046) and histidine (P = 0.049). The total intake of animal proteins was significantly lower in the EM group compared to the controls (P = 0.047). EM patients showed a decreased intake of vitamin C (P = 0.031), vitamin B12 (P = 0.008) and magnesium (P = 0.043) compared to controls. This study confirms a high association of endometriosis and gastrointestinal disorders accompanied by an altered nutrient intake. A dietary intervention by a professional nutritionist may help to reduce disease burden in the affected women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background. Chickenpox is prevalent in the US despite the availability of an effective vaccine. Acyclovir treatment is limited by concerns about efficacy if given after the first day of rash and by concerns about induction of viral resistance. Objective. Evaluate initiation and duration of acyclovir treatment of chickenpox and its effect on viral resistance. Study design. Randomized, placebo-controlled, double blind trial in immunocompetent patients who were stratified by age at enrollment (children, 2 to 11 years; adolescents, ≥12 to 18 years; adults, ≥19 years) and duration of rash (≤24 h vs. >24 to 48 h). Lesions were staged, counted and cultured; temperatures and symptoms were recorded daily. Intervention. Subjects presenting within 24 h of rash onset (Group A) were randomly assigned to 5 or 7 days of oral acyclovir treatment, 80 mg/kg/day up to a maximum of 3200 mg/day in four divided doses. Subjects whose rash was >24 to 48 h old were randomized to receive 5 days of acyclovir treatment beginning on the first (Group B1) or second study day (Group B2). Matching placebos were used to ensure that subjects uniformly received 28 doses of study compound. Results. Of the 177 subjects recruited Group A patients who were treated on the first day of rash had the greatest number of significantly shortened event times with 5 days of therapy being equivalent to 7 days. There also were some shorter times to events for Group B1 patients who began therapy on the second day of rash vs. Group B2 patients who started acyclovir on the third. These included: time to maximum lesion formation (adolescents, P = 0.007; children, P = 0.03); 50% healing in adolescents (P = 0.005); and residual facial lesions in adults (P = 0.047). The probability of viral shedding was significantly reduced for Group A subjects vs. Group B1 subjects (P = 0.006). Viruses shed during therapy remained susceptible to acyclovir and retained normal thymidine kinase function. Conclusions. Immunocompetent children, adolescents and adults with chickenpox displayed a gradation in their clinical responses to acyclovir that correlated with the time from onset of rash to initiation of therapy. Five days of therapy is sufficient because a 7-day course provided no additional benefit. The susceptibility to acyclovir of viruses shed during treatment did not change; however, the effect of therapy on resistance of latent virus was not assessed.

Abstract

Between 1836 and 1840, Jan Vilém Helfer collected thousands of insects, birds and plants in Burma, the Andaman Islands and the Mergui Archipelago, with many first records from these regions. His botanical specimens are preserved in Prague, Kew, Calcutta and many other herbaria. Yet no account has been published of his itinerary, and the volume of his collections has not previously been appreciated. We bring together the available data on Helfer, reconstruct his itinerary and the two routes by which his plants were distributed, and explain the different numbering systems used on the labels of Helfer's duplicates. Based on what his widow transferred to the Czech National Museum in Prague, Helfer collected almost 48,000 beetles, 609 bird skins, 14 mammal skins, 508 Lepidoptera, and 6,086 herbarium specimens or collections. His diaries and his wife's account of their travels have allowed us to reconstruct his itinerary, and we have generated new labels for 305 collections, most of which have two or three duplicates. Helfer's Burmese and Andaman herbarium contains some of the first records of economically important plants in which he was particularly interested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
