The student check-up (SCU) is a brief school-based motivational interviewing intervention developed to promote academic-related behavioral changes and to increase accessibility to mental health services. Despite published randomized controlled trials demonstrating SCU's effectiveness in promoting student self-efficacy in academic efforts, the SCU's impact on student grade outcome has been inconsistent across studies. This study examines whether student participants' written statements that represent change talk and sustain talk predict differences in post-treatment grade outcomes and whether these effects are moderated by students' pre-treatment academic achievement. In addition, we examine whether change and sustain statements mediate the relationship between study sites and grade outcomes. A two-level linear regression controlling for pre-treatment grades indicated that as the frequency of change statements increases, students' post-treatment grades in English Language Arts decrease (B = -0.62, p = 0.03), suggesting that "the more" is not always "the merrier" when it comes to evoking change statements related to academic goals that require multiple behavioral changes for attainment.

A primary aim of science education is to teach students how to interpret and engage with scientific information. To do so effectively requires an adequate understanding of the nature of science (NOS)--in other words, what science is and how it works. There is a long history of evidence to suggest that many undergraduate students struggle to properly understand NOS. While the specific factors contributing to misinformed views on NOS may be difficult to tease apart, the way in which students learn about science at the undergraduate level is a significant contributor. We implemented a reflection activity in a unique first-year program at a large Canadian university in order to promote student learning of NOS. Through the students' reflections, we identified how certain pedagogical approaches, many of which deviate from traditional teaching methods used throughout undergraduate science education, can positively impact student comprehension of NOS. Our experiences support the use of reflective practices in promoting critical thinking and the development of more nuanced student views of NOS.

Black students' experiences in math and science courses in urban high schools were investigated. A critical race theoretical framing of qualitative data revealed teacher characteristics that encouraged and discouraged students. Teacher characteristics that encouraged students' interests included (1) shared racial/cultural background with students, (2) passion for students and subject matter, and (3) a caring and understanding approach to student engagement. Characteristics that discouraged student engagement included (1) lack of racial representation, (2) differential treatment of students based on race, (3) condescension and assumed incompetence, and (4) technology as a replacement for instruction. We offer recommendations to improve Black students' experience and increase interest in pursuing future STEM careers.

As a field established on improving the lives of individuals, families, and communities, Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) is well-positioned to address the challenges and opportunities faced by justice-involved families (Nickols et al., 2009). From reentry and rehabilitation to parenting and family relationships, the support of justice-involved families is intrinsically linked to individual well-being, family strengths, and community vitality. Embedded within the FCS Body of Knowledge (BOK), the integrative element of human ecosystems provides practitioners with a lens for viewing the justice system's impact on families. The foundation of FCS emphasizes the importance of strong family relationships. For justice-involved families, these relationships may be strained due to the effects of incarceration. Multiple barriers, within and outside of the justice system, can impact a family's ability to interact and communicate with their justice-involved loved ones. Using the BOK as a model for practice, this paper details five ways in which the FCS profession can utilize the foundations of the field to support justice-involved families.

As gifted and advanced level leaders move to increasing efforts of inclusivity in their programs, there is a need to use evaluative measures focusing on equity for systemic change and growth. Equity Audits can provide leaders with a holistic perspective of their programming and how they can use the data to shift the culture, identify inequities and and address those inequities through intentional goal setting and problem solving for support. This article focuses on how gifted and advanced level leaders develop Equity Audits for their programs as a way to understand program data holistically, facilitate change and promote an overall sense of goal setting based on the well-being of students, teachers, and stakeholders who support their programs.

Given the individual and systemic stress endured by children and families during the COVID-19 pandemic, research examining culturally responsive school experiences and supports to enhance resilience is critical. This study examined the relationship between caregivers' perceptions of COVID-19 impact, mental health distress among children and caregivers, and school-based sociocultural protective factors, including culturally responsive practices in schools and the relationships between teachers and caregivers, concurrently and longitudinally. Data were collected from caregivers of elementary-aged children at two-time points from March to April 2020 (N = 174) and one year later in 2021 (N = 114). Regression analyses revealed that COVID-19 impact positively predicted and parent-teacher joining negatively predicted mental health concerns among children and families, concurrently and longitudinally. Furthermore, there was a positive relationship between caregivers' perceptions of teachers' social awareness and justice practices and mental health symptoms for children in 2020. Parent-teacher joining longitudinally moderated the relationship between COVID-19 impact and caregivers' mental health concerns. This study provides implications regarding sociocultural resilience factors that should be considered in schools amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many new students are struggling to succeed in the current college environment. The mental health crisis and the pandemic have only increased this struggle. Communication centers should partner with student orientation in order to increase student retention, alongside familiarizing students with the communication center from the beginning of their college experience. Communication centers should employ trauma-informed pedagogy in incoming student orientation efforts to further support struggling students. Communication centers should also make an effort to interact with students outside the center in order to encourage them to come to the center to receive further support.

Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are widely used in large introductory courses. Recent research focuses on MCQ reliability and validity and overlooks questions of accessibility. Yet, access to the norms of academic discourse embedded in MCQs differs between groups of first-year students. We theorize these norms as part of the institutionalized cultural symbols that reproduce social and cultural exclusion for linguistically diverse students. A sociological focus on linguistic diversity is necessary as the percentage of students who use English as an additional language (EAL), rather than English as a native language (ENL), has grown. Drawing on sociology as pedagogy, we problematize MCQs as a medium shaping linguistically diverse students' ability to demonstrate disciplinary knowledge. Our multimethod research uses two-stage randomized exams and focus groups with EAL and ENL students to assess the effects of a modification in instructors' MCQ writing practices in sociology and psychology courses. Findings show that students are more likely to answer a modified MCQ correctly, with greater improvement for EAL students.

This article presents a study that explored the implementation of a "Say Yes to FCS" Teaching Camp, a local community initiative in Texas, to address the critical shortage of family and consumer sciences (FCS) teachers in secondary schools. Aimed at incoming 9th- and 10th-grade students, the 4-day camp offered hands-on learning experiences across various FCS-related secondary courses, mentorship from local FCS educators, and insights into the diverse career paths within the field. Despite not significantly increasing the participants' interest in pursuing the FCS teaching profession, the camp was positively received, prompting interest in FCS-related high-school courses. In addition, this study emphasizes the necessity of evaluating the camp's success and adjusting strategies to ensure this initiative increases participants' interest in pursuing an FCS teaching profession in the future.

The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize the characteristics of recent studies on diabetes education interventions in rural areas and identify the relative proportion of studies with characteristics of interest that showed a reduction in glycated hemoglobin (A1C). A systematic literature search was performed in Web of Science, PubMed and PsychInfo, using keywords and Medical Subject Heading terms. Articles conducted in rural areas of the United States tested an educational intervention for people with type 2 diabetes, and reported outcomes were identified. A total of 2762 articles were identified, of which 27 were included. Of the 27 articles, most were implemented in the Southeast (n = 13). Of the 21 interventions that measured A1C, 10 reported a statistically significant decrease in A1C. The proportion of studies with a significant A1C reduction was higher for the studies that used telehealth/online, delivered by a collaboration between health-care professionals and lay educators or included family or group components. Only three studies included their criteria in determining rurality. Future diabetes education interventions may consider including family members or group sessions, holding online sessions and partnering with local resources. Additionally, stronger research methods are needed to test practical and effective interventions to improve diabetes education in rural areas.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes and knowledge of school-based speech-language pathologists toward trauma-informed care. Method: School-based speech-language pathologists (N = 116) completed the Attitudes Related to Trauma-Informed Care Scale Version 45 Education (ARTIC-45) survey via an online survey platform and provided information about their work experience, history with trauma training, and demographic variables. Results: Although speech-language pathologists had responses that, on average, aligned with trauma-informed perspectives, those perspectives varied and were not at ceiling. Characteristics such as age, years of experience, and foster care experience did not significantly influence the results, but self-rating of trauma-informed care knowledge did correlate with the ARTIC-45 survey. Participants who had engaged in trauma-informed care trainings had more trauma-informed perspectives and knowledge than participants who had not. Conclusions: The results of this study provide preliminary evidence that trauma-informed care trainings may benefit those speech-language pathologists working with children who have experienced trauma. This study also provides preliminary evidence supporting the validity of the ARTIC-45 for use with speech-language pathologists.

The Student Subjective Wellbeing Questionnaire (SSWQ) is a 16-item measure of school-specific subjective wellbeing intended for mental health screening applications. We extended past validation work to scrutinize the SSWQ's previously proposed factor structure (i.e., four group factors; one general factor) and score reliability using two random subsets of data from a sample of 1,020 adolescents in grades 9-12. Results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses suggested that the four items related to the "educational purpose" [EP] group factor did not cohere as expected, unlike the items for the other three-group factors. Revised 12-item models that excluded the EP items were defensible across both subsamples. Model-based reliability indices for the 12-item general factor scores were consistently strong and showed exceptionally high correlation with the original 16-item version (r = 0.98), yet unique reliability of the group factor scores was comparatively weaker. We recommend future research reevaluate the SSWQ item content and factor structure and consider using model-based factor scores at least in addition to sum scores for analyses when operating in a latent factor framework. We emphasize relying on the general rather than the group factor scores to parse individual differences in student subjective wellbeing or to make critical decisions regarding intervention resource allocation.

We evaluated the usefulness of scores from two transdiagnostic scales--the 8-item version of the Avoidance and Fusion Questionnaire for Youth and the second edition of the Avoidance and Action Questionnaire--for estimating symptom severity on two measures of depression and anxiety. Responses from 797 college students, who mostly identified as White and female, to both measures of psychological inflexibility were analyzed to determine how well scores estimated anxiety and depression above or below a given severity level and at specific categories of symptom severity. Findings indicated that scores from both measures were acceptable to excellent screeners of concurrent ratings of anxiety and depression. Results varied somewhat depending on the measure used, level of severity targeted, and scope of screening. By investigating the screening accuracy of these transdiagnostic measures and potential cut scores to ease in interpreting results, we hope these measures might prove useful for addressing barriers in public health screening endeavors.

Background: Graduate education provides students with specialized skills needed to advance science and discovery and prepares future educators and role models for future generations of learners. Given the importance of graduate education, the estimate that more than half of the students who begin it do not complete their degrees is troubling. Existing scholarship suggests that this substantial attrition from graduate school is in part due to inadequate advising. To address this concern, it is important to examine students' experiences with graduate advising. Purpose: This article presents a new model--the Model of Wholeness in Graduate Advising (MWGA)--that characterizes a range of students' advising experiences. In so doing, it encourages faculty to move toward a more caring and wholeness-promoting framework in graduate advising. Research Design: To better understand the complexities of graduate advising and the various types of experiences--and relationships--that students have, desire, expect, and need to thrive both professionally and personally, this study included interviews with 42 Black male graduate students attending historically and predominantly White institutions (HPWIs). Thematic analysis revealed that students' advising experiences included aspects of "ethics of care" (or degrees of care: whole, partial, empty). Iterative analysis of data led to the creation of the practice-informing model: the Model of Wholeness in Graduate Advising (MWGA). Findings: Although some students described experiencing positive interactions and teachable moments with their advisors, others painted pictures of demoralizing encounters and public shaming practices. Still others described advising experiences they did not have but would want. Accounting for this range, the MWGA denotes an upwardly moving relationship between degrees of care (i.e., empty, partial, whole) and students' perceptions of their advising experiences and relationships (i.e., weak, basic, strong) in part shaped by students' expectations for their advising experiences and relationships, and their lived experiences. Conclusions and Recommendations: The findings from this study, represented in the MWGA, illustrate theoretical linkages between students' expectations of advising, the levels of their advising experiences and relationships, and degrees of care demonstrated by their advisors. Most notably, more elements of care tend to result in better lived advising experiences and relationships. For current and future faculty, moving toward a more caring and wholeness-promoting framework might start with recognizing the needs of students as whole people. Creating more caring advising experiences and developing more caring relationships may better assist students in progressing through degree completion, and doing so more fully whole.
