This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of PH in a cohort of COPD patients across the severity of airflow limitation, and reporting the hemodynamic characteristics at rest and during exercise.Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis on COPD patients who underwent right-heart catheterization in our center with measurements obtained at rest (n=139) and during exercise (n=85). PH was defined as mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) ≥25 mmHg and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure 3.Results: PH was present in 25 patients (18%). According to the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) classification, PH prevalence in GOLD 2 was 7% (3 patients); 25% (14 patients) in GOLD 3; and 22% (8 patients) in GOLD 4. Abstract

Classical Supergiant X-ray Binaries (SGXBs) and Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) are two types of High-mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) that present similar donors but, at the same time, show very different behavior in the X-rays. The reason for this dichotomy of wind-fed HMXBs is still a matter of debate. Among the several explanations that have been proposed, some of them invoke specific stellar wind properties of the donor stars. Only dedicated empiric analysis of the donors' stellar wind can provide the required information to accomplish an adequate test of these theories. However, such analyses are scarce. To close this gap, we perform a comparative analysis of the optical companion in two important systems: IGR J17544-2619 (SFXT) and Vela X-1 (SGXB). We analyse the spectra of each star in detail and derive their stellar and wind properties. We compare the wind parameters, giving us an excellent chance of recognizing key differences between donor winds in SFXTs and SGXBs. We find that the stellar parameters derived from the analysis generally agree well with the spectral types of the two donors: O9I (IGR J17544-2619) and B0.5Iae (Vela X-1). An important difference between the stellar winds of the two stars is their terminal velocities v_inf=1500km/s in IGR J17544-2619 and v_inf=700km/s in Vela~X-1, which has important consequences on the X-ray luminosity of these sources. Their specific combination of wind speed and pulsar spin favours an accretion regime with a persistently high luminosity in Vela X-1, while it favours an inhibiting accretion mechanism in IGR~J17544-2619. Our study demonstrates that the wind relative velocity is critical in the determination of the class of HMXBs hosting a supergiant donor, given that it may shift the accretion mechanism from direct accretion to propeller regimes when combined with other parameters., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 25 pages, 32 figures

Abstract

Cen X-3 is a compact, high-mass X-ray binary (HMXRB), likely powered by Roche lobe overflow. We present a phase-resolved X-ray spectral and timing analysis of a target of opportunity Chandra observation made during a low-flux to high-flux transition. The high-resolution spectra allow us to delve into the events that occurred during this episode. The spectrum is described by a single black body absorbed by a local column density of the order of 1023 − 24 cm−2, which is one to two orders of magnitude higher than found for previous analyses of data taken at similar orbital phases. Such a large column produces a Compton shoulder in the Fe Kα line. The transition appears to be caused by the onset of efficient cooling, which cools the plasma by 10 million degrees in just 10 ks, allowing matter to enter the magnetosphere. This happens after a major disturbance, probably the arrival of a train of wind clumps with individual masses in the range 1019 − 20 g. This train moves ballistically in an eccentric orbit around the NS, producing a distinctive Doppler modulation in the Fe XXV line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. Phenotypic characteristics of seminal extracellular vesicles are related to sperm cryotolerance in stallions.

Abstract

The ability of spermatozoa to withstand the cryopreservation process differs between stallions. The mechanisms underlying these differences are largely unknown. Seminal plasma (SP) contains extracellular vesicles (sEVs) that may influence the outcome of sperm cryopreservation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenotypic characteristics of sEVs isolated from ejaculates of stallions showing differences in sperm cryotolerance. Seminal plasma (SP) samples were collected from 10 ejaculates (one per stallion), which were divided into two groups based on their total sperm motility recovery after thawing (calculated as: total sperm motility after thawing × 100/total sperm motility before freezing): (1) good freezability ejaculates (GFE, n=5), ranging from 76.06% to 83.04% and (2) poor freezability ejaculates (PFE, n=5), ranging from 14.34% to 52.70%. For sEV isolation, SP samples were centrifuged (3,200 g x 15 min and 20,000 g x 30 min at 4 °C), and the supernatants were diluted in PBS (1:2; v:v), ultrafiltered (AmiconⓇ 10K, 3,200 g x 90 min) and subjected to size exclusion chromatography. The sEV samples were characterized according to the Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles (MISEV2023) guidelines, including morphology (cryo-electron microscopy), concentration (total protein, BCA™ assay), particle size distribution (dynamic light scattering), purity (albumin quantification), and EV protein markers (CD63, CD9, and CD81). Purity and EV protein markers were assessed by flow cytometry using carboxyfluorescein succinimidyl ester (CFSE) to label integral and functional sEVs. Cryo-electron microscopy images confirmed the presence of sEVs in all samples. No differences in morphology, total protein, EV protein markers, or purity were found between sEV samples from GFE and PFE. However, the particle size distribution differed between freezability groups (P ˂ 0.0001), being smaller in GFE (median, 25-75th percentiles; 146, 133-150.5 nm) than in PFE (191.3, 177.7-273.8 nm). In addition, the percentage of CFSE-positive events also differed (P ˂ 0.05), being higher in GFE (mean ± SD; 66.40 ± 13.36 %) than in PFE (45.13 ± 7.76 %). In conclusion, GFE have smaller and more functional sEVs than PFE. These differences suggest that sEVs may be involved in sperm freezability. Further studies are needed to investigate the biological role and effects of the sEVs in improving sperm freezability in stallions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Three low-achieving third-grade children were exposed to "report-do-report" correspondence training as a reinforcement program to improve academic performance. Intervention involved teaching the children to prompt praise following completing math work, in both training and classroom settings. Students also reported planned behaviors in their regular math class. The intervention resulted in improved academic performance. (Author/DB)
