The development of a novel technique based on a cylindrical microwave resonator for high pressure phase equilibrium determination is described. Electric permittivity or dielectric constant is a physical property that depends on temperature and pressure $\epsilon$($p$,$T$). Based on this property, a measuring technique consisting of a cylindrical resonant cavity that works in the microwave spectrum has been developed. Equilibrium data of fluid mixtures are measured at high pressure using a synthetic method, where phase transition is determined under isothermal conditions due to the change of the dielectric constant. This technique may be a more accurate alternative to conventional visual synthetic methods. The technique was validated measuring pure $CO_{2}$, and phase behaviour was then determined for two binary mixtures [$CO_{2}$ (0.6) + $CH_{4}$ (0.4)] and [$CO_{2}$ (0.4) + $CH_{4}$ (0.6)], results for which are presented. These systems are interesting for the study of biogas-like mixtures. In addition, data were compared with the equation of state used for natural gas GERG-2008, and also, they were modelled using Peng-Robinson equation of state and Wong-Sandler mixing rules, which are widely employed in chemical industries and which give good results.

This work presents phase envelope and speed of sound data for the (0.60 $CO_{2}$ + 0.40 $C_{3}H_{8}$) and (0.80 $CO_{2}$ + 0.20 $C_{3}H_{8}$) binary mixtures. Phase equilibria was measured using a cylindrical resonator working in the microwave band whereas an acoustic resonator was used for speed of sound measurements. The experimental results were compared with GERG-2008 equation of state, obtaining average absolute deviations by 0.24% in pressure for phase equilibria data and 0.025% for speed of sound data. Speed of sound values were used to derive perfect-gas heat capacities, acoustic virial coefficients, and second density virial coefficients. In addition, AGA8-DC92 equation of state performance was checked for the results derived from speeds of sound.

An accurate implementation of wetting and pressure drop is crucial to correctly reproducing fluid displacement processes in porous media. Although several strategies have been proposed in the literature, a systematic comparison of them is needed to determine the most suitable for practical applications. Here, we carried out numerical simulations to investigate the performance of two widely used wettability schemes in the lattice Boltzmann color gradient model, namely the geometrical wetting scheme by Leclaire et al. (Scheme-I) and the modified direction of the color gradient scheme by Akai et al. (Scheme-II). We showed that Scheme-II was more accurate in simulating static contact angles of a fluid droplet on a solid surface. However, Scheme-I was more accurate in simulating a dynamic case of a binary fluid flow in a horizontal capillary tube described by the Washburn equation. Moreover, we investigated the performance of two popular pressure gradient implementation types. Type-I used the so-called Zou-He pressure boundary conditions at the inlet and the outlet of the domain, while Type-II used an external body force as a pressure gradient. We showed that the Type-I implementation was slightly more accurate in simulating a neutrally wetting fluid in a horizontal capillary tube described by the Washburn equation. We also investigated the differences between the two types of pressure gradient implementation in simulating two fluid displacement processes in a Bentheimer sandstone rock sample: the primary drainage and the imbibition displacement processes.

In this work, we obtain Hubble constant ($H_0$) estimates by using two galaxy cluster gas mass fraction measurement samples, Type Ia supernovae luminosity distances, and the validity of the cosmic distance duality relation. Notably, the angular diameter distance (ADD) to each galaxy cluster in the samples is determined by combining its gas mass fraction measurement with galaxy clustering observations, more precisely, the $\Omega_b/\Omega_m$ ratio. Such a combination results in a $H_0$ estimate that is independent of a specific cosmological framework. In one of the samples, the gas fraction measurements were calculated in spherical shells at radii near $r_{\rm 2500}$ (44 data points), while in the other (103 data points) the measurements were calculated within $ r_{\rm 500}$. We find $H_0=72.7^{+6.3}_{-5.6}$ km/s/Mpc at 68\% CL for the joint analysis of these data sets. We also investigate the impact on the $H_0$ determination by exploring the precision and number of gas mass fraction data by performing a data Monte Carlo simulation. Magnetic skyrmions are topological magnetic textures that hold great promise as nanoscale bits of information in memory and logic devices. Although room-temperature ferromagnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation have been demonstrated, their velocity has been limited to about 100 meters per second. In addition, their dynamics are perturbed by the skyrmion Hall effect, a motion transverse to the current direction caused by the skyrmion topological charge. Here, we show that skyrmions in compensated synthetic antiferromagnets can be moved by current along the current direction at velocities of up to 900 meters per second. This can be explained by the cancellation of the net topological charge leading to a vanishing skyrmion Hall effect. Automated molecular simulations are used extensively for predicting material properties. Typically, these simulations exhibit two regimes: a dynamic equilibration part, followed by a steady state. For extracting observable properties, the simulations must first reach a steady state so that thermodynamic averages can be taken. However, as equilibration depends on simulation conditions, predicting the optimal number of simulation steps a priori is impossible. Here, we demonstrate the application of the Marginal Standard Error Rule (MSER) for automatically identifying the optimal truncation point in Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations. This novel automatic procedure determines the point in which steady state is reached, ensuring that figures-of-merits are extracted in an objective, accurate, and reproducible fashion. In the case of GCMC simulations of gas adsorption in metal-organic frameworks, we find that this methodology reduces the computational cost by up to 90%. As MSER statistics are independent of the simulation method that creates the data, this library is, in principle, applicable to any time series analysis in which equilibration truncation is required. Magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interactions are crucial parameters that characterize the hybrid metal-organic interface, key component of an organic spintronic device. We show that the incorporation of 4$f$ RE atoms to hybrid metal-organic interfaces of CuPc/REAu$_2$ type (RE= Gd, Ho) constitutes a feasible approach towards on-demand magnetic properties and functionalities. The GdAu$_2$ and HoAu$_2$ substrates differ in their magnetic anisotropy behavior. Remarkably, the HoAu$_2$ surface boosts the inherent out-of-plane anisotropy of CuPc, owing to the match between the anisotropy axis of substrate and molecule. Furthermore, the presence of RE atoms leads to a spontaneous antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange coupling at the interface, induced by the 3$d$-4$f$ superexchange interaction between the unpaired 3$d$ electron of CuPc and the 4$f$ electrons of the RE atoms. Continuous gravitational-wave signals (CWs) are long-lasting quasi-monochromatic gravitational-wave signals expected to be emitted by rapidly-rotating non-axisymmetric neutron stars. Depending on the rotational frequency and sky location of the source, certain CW signals may behave in a similar manner to narrow-band artifacts present in ground-based interferometric detectors. Part of the detector-characterisation tasks in the current generation of interferometric detectors (Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo, and KAGRA) aim at understanding the origin of these narrow artifacts, commonly known as ``spectral lines''. It is expected that similar tasks will continue after the arrival of next-generation detectors (e.g. Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer). Typically, a fraction of the observed lines in a given detector can be associated to one or more instrumental causes; others, however, have an unknown origin. In this work, we assess the similarity of CW signals to spectral lines in order to understand whether a CW may be mistaken for a noise artifact. In this work, an efficient blackbox-type multigrid method is proposed for solving multipoint flux approximations of the Darcy problem on logically rectangular grids. The approach is based on a cell-centered multigrid algorithm, which combines a piecewise constant interpolation and the restriction operator by Wesseling/Khalil with a line-wise relaxation procedure. A local Fourier analysis is performed for the case of a Cartesian uniform grid. The method shows a robust convergence for different full tensor coefficient problems and several rough quadrilateral grids.

We propose and demonstrate a compact and simple vector bending sensor capable of distinguishing any direction and amplitude with high accuracy. The sensor consists of a short segment of asymmetric multicore fiber (MCF) fusion spliced to a standard single mode fiber. The reflection spectrum of such a structure shifts and shrinks in specific manners depending on the direction in which the MCF is bent. By monitoring simultaneously wavelength shift and light power variations, the amplitude and bend direction of the MCF can be unmistakably measured in any orientation, from 0{\deg} to 360{\deg}. The bending sensor proposed here is highly sensitive even for small bending angles (below 1{\deg}).

In this paper, we report on a multicore fiber-based (MCF) temperature sensor that operates in a wide thermal range and that is robustly packaged to withstand harsh environments. To develop the sensor, the fundamentals concerning the effect of temperature on such fibers have been analyzed in detail to predict the most temperature sensitive MCF geometry. Thanks to it, the device, which operates in reflection mode and consists of a short segment of strongly coupled MCF fusion spliced to a standard single mode fiber, shows higher sensitivity than other devices with identical configuration. Regarding its packaging, it consists of an inner ceramic and two outer metallic tubes to provide rigidity and protection against impacts or dirt. The device was calibrated for a thermal range from 25 C to 900 C and a K-type thermocouple was used as reference. Our results suggest that the manufactured optical thermometer is as accurate as the electronic one, reaching a sensitivity up to 29.426 pm/C with the advantage of being passive, compact and easy to fabricate and interrogate. Therefore, we believe this device is appealing for industrial applications that require highly sensitive temperature sensing in very demanding environments, and that the analysis included in this work could be analogously applied to develop sensitivity-optimized devices for other parameters of interest.

The present work deals with a curvature sensor that consists of two segments of asymmetric multicore fiber (MCF) fusion spliced with standard single mode fiber (SMF). The MCF comprises three strongly coupled cores; one of such cores is at the geometrical center of the MCF. The two segments of MCF are short, have different lengths (less than 2 cm each), and are rotated 180 degrees with respect to each other. The fabrication of the sensor was carried out with a fusion splicing machine that has the means for rotating optical fibers. It is demonstrated that the sensor behaves as two SMF-MCF-SMF structures in series, and consequently, it has enhanced sensitivity. The device proposed here can be used to sense the direction and amplitude of curvature by monitoring either wavelength shifts or intensity changes. In the latter case, high curvature sensitivity was observed. The device can also be used for the development of other highly sensitive sensors to monitor, for example, vibrations, force, pressure, or any other parameter that induces periodic or local curvature or bending to the MCF segments.

Liquid argon time projection chambers (TPC) are widely used in neutrino oscillation and dark matter experiments. Detection of scintillation light in liquid argon TPC's is challenging because of its short wavelength, in the VUV range, and the cryogenic temperatures (~86 K) at which the sensors must operate. Wavelength shifters (WLS) are typically needed to take advantage of the high Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE) in the visible range of most of photondetectors. The Hamamatsu VUV4 S13370--6075CN SiPMs can directly detect VUV light without the use of WLS, which main benefit is an improved PDE at these short wavelengths, but also the visible light from WLS. The manufacturer (Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.) provides a complete characterization of these devices at room temperature; however, previous studies have indicated a decrease of the PDE at cryogenic temperature for VUV light. In this work, we present the measurement of the PDE of VUV4 SiPMs at cryogenic temperature for different wavelengths in the range [270, 570] nm.
