Abstract

Information about past ecosystem dynamics and human activities is stored in the ice of Colle Gnifetti glacier in the Swiss Alps. Adverse climatic intervals incurred crop failures and famines and triggered reestablishment of forest vegetation but also societal resilience through innovation. Historical documents and lake sediments record these changes at local—regional scales but often struggle to comprehensively document continental‐scale impacts on ecosystems. Here, we provide unique multiproxy evidence of broad‐scale ecosystem, land use, and climate dynamics over the past millennium from a Colle Gnifetti microfossil and oxygen isotope record. Microfossil data indicate that before 1750 CE forests and fallow land rapidly replaced crop cultivation during historically documented societal crises caused by climate shifts and epidemics. Subsequently, with technology and the introduction of more resilient crops, European societies adapted to the Little Ice Age cold period, but resource overexploitation and industrialization led to new regional to global‐scale environmental challenges. Plain Language Summary: Sophisticated microscopy and geochemistry analyses of glacier ice from the Monte Rosa Massif in the Swiss Alps reveal close linkages among European climate, vegetation, agriculture, pollution, pests, and fire during the past millennium. Our novel time series shows that societal and environmental dynamics were mainly controlled by climate, pandemics, and technological innovations. By placing the glacial information into historical context, we reveal some of the mechanisms that created prosperity and peril in Europe's past. Industrialization and import of maize and other new crops enabled European societies to transcend the crop failures and famines of the Little Ice Age climate period during the 19th century, but unintended environmental consequences resulted, which are now culminating in global warming and species loss. Abstract

The surfaces of a ten years aged crystal and a freshly prepared κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 crystal were compared by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The molecularly-resolved STM images of the bc plane of the crystals agree with each other and with the electronic contrast obtained by new density functional theory (DFT) based simulations. Even after ten years STM images of the molecular stacking of BEDT-TTF display a variation in brightness at the positions of different molecules. We attribute this symmetry breaking concerning the brightness in the STM images of the otherwise equivalent BEDT-TTF dimers to the electronic states of a relaxed surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

23. Gendered perceptions of aging: an examination of college students.

Abstract

Few studies examine how the gendered nature of aging impacts young adults--shaping their images of later life, attitudes toward elderly persons, aging anxieties, and conceptions of the start of 'old age.' We examine gender differences in young adults' views of elders and the aging process using a survey of college students and content analysis of student-drawn sketches of elders (N = 391). Results indicate that both genders hold more positive images of elderly women than men; however, they view 'old age' as beginning at a younger age for women. In addition, we find that, compared with men, women report later starts of 'old age' for both genders and more favorable attitudes toward elders, but also greater aging anxiety. Abstract

Strain balanced InGaAs/InGaAs multiquantum well photovoltaic cells have been shown to be of great interest for thermophotovoltaic applications, where the absorption needs to extend well into the near infrar ed region to intercept most of the radiation emitted by heat sources operating in the range 1200-1700 ° C. The present work has investigated In[sub y]Ga[sub 1 - y]As/In[sub x]Ga[sub 1 - x]As multiquantum well devices grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE)on InP,and designed to have the absorption edge between 1800 and 2000 nm. Although strain balancing prevents misfit dislocations developing in the quantumwells, plastic relaxation may occur through the generation of conical defects when the difference between the compressive strain of the wells and the tensile strain of the barriers exceeds a critical value. Despite that they appear to be electrically active, these defects turn out to have a limited effecton the dark current of these cells, which is comparable to that of the best control cells (same structure but with no quantum wells). On the other hand, the conical defects appear to be correlated with the dramatic drop in the photocurrent even at a very low forward bias voltage. In the present study, electron beam induced current (EBIC) has been used to study the electrical properties ofthe defects on a microscopic scale, and made it possible to explain their influence on the electrical characteristics of the photovoltaic devices. Abstract

Quantum well cells (QWCs) are p–i–n photovoltaic devices with multiple quantum wells (MQWs) inserted in the intrinsic region. They show the desirable characteristic for thermophotovoltaics (TPV) of an easily tuneable bandgap. This is highly relevant because the bandgaps of homostructures are restricted by the range of lattice matched substrates available. As a consequence bulk structures cannot be tuned to desirable narrow band emission spectra. QWCs, however, display tuneable bandgaps from several points of view. Firstly, the MQW bandedge is inherently tuneable by changing well depth and dimension. More significantly, strain compensated MQW systems allow lattice mismatched layers to be deposited without the formation of dislocations. This permits a much greater range of compositions and hence bandgaps than are obtainable with lattice matched systems. We first review the fundamental understanding of spectral response and dark current of the QWC and describe the initial proposal of QWCs for TPV before examining subsequent work on lattice matched InGaAsP/InP. Design limitations of the lattice matched materials can be eliminated by applying strain compensation techniques to strained materials. We show dark current measurements for lattice matched and strained systems with dark currents lower than other promising TPV designs despite longer wavelength absorption edges. This work has recently produced a QWC capable of reaching the Holmia narrow band emission peak at wavelength 1950 nm which shows the promise of this approach for TPV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
