1. The Relationship between Leaders' Psychological Capital and Organizational Outcomes: A Crossover Model

Abstract

The study investigated the potential role of human resources exemplified by leaders' psychological capital (PsyCap) as a resource that may cross over to team-member exchange (TMX), and bring about desired organizational outcomes. We suggest a model where TMX of senior management teams serves as a team resource mediating the relationship between leaders' PsyCap and organizational outcomes, as represented by team innovation, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), and employees' job satisfaction. The study, carried out among 86 elementary and junior high schools, indicated a positive relationship between leaders' PsyCap and TMX. In addition, we found a significant relationship between TMX and the three measures of organizational outcomes. Furthermore, TMX partially mediated the relationship between leaders' PsyCap and the desired outcomes, excepting innovation. The findings provide support for the importance of the leaders' personal resource of psychological capital as a complementary perspective that may enhance our understanding of leadership's impact on organizational success. In addition, the study provides significant support for the expanded model, broadening the definition of the crossover model by examining the translation of positive resources from leaders' PsyCap to organizational outcomes via teams' positive resources. From a practical perspective, the findings bring to the forefront the importance of psychological capital as a state-like construct that can be developed through leader preparation and professional development programs.

2. Anthropological Thinking in Data Science Education: Thinking within Context

Abstract

The significance of ethics in data science research has attracted considerable attention in recent years. While there is widespread agreement on the importance of teaching ethics within computing contexts, there is no clear method for its implementation and assessment. Studies focusing on methods for integrating ethics into data science courses reveal that students tend to neglect ethical concerns in their data analysis. Based on the data we collected from questionnaires distributed to undergraduate science and engineering students, this paper expands the discussion beyond human concerns and ethics in data science education. As we will show, students tend to neglect the context when attempting to solve data science questions. We argue that gaps in understanding the context relating to the data result in gaps in the analysis as well as in the interpretation of the data. Thus, we propose anthropological thinking as a pedagogy to overcome the context neglect. Placing the spotlight on the "context" promotes a holistic understanding of the phenomenon being analyzed, as it includes important considerations that do not necessarily fit the more commonly used term "human concerns."

3. Quasinormal modes, thermodynamics and shadow of black holes in Hu-Sawicki f(R) gravity theory

Abstract

We derive novel black hole solutions in a modified gravity theory, namely the Hu-Sawicki model of $f(R)$ gravity. After obtaining the black hole solution, we study the horizon radius of the black hole from the metric and then analyse the dependence of the model parameters on the horizon. We then use the 6th-order WKB method to study the quasinormal modes of oscillations (QNMs) of the black hole perturbed by a scalar field. The dependence of the amplitude and damping part of the QNMs are analysed with respect to variations in model parameters and the errors associated with the QNMs are also computed. After that, we study some thermodynamic properties associated with the black hole such as its thermodynamic temperature as well as greybody factors. It is found that the black hole has the possibility of showcasing negative temperatures. We also analyse the geodesics and derive the photon sphere radius as well as the shadow radius of the black hole. The photon radius is independent of the model parameters while the shadow radius showed a fair amount of dependence on the model parameters. Abstract

Abstract Gastrin is secreted following a rise in gastric pH, leading to gastric acid secretion. Sleeve gastrectomy (SG), a bariatric surgery where 80% of the gastric corpus is excised, presents a challenge for gastric pH homeostasis. Using histology, and single-cell RNA sequencing of the gastric epithelium in 12 women, we observed that SG is associated with an increase in a sub-population of acid-secreting parietal cells that overexpress respiratory enzymes and an increase in histamine-secreting enterochromaffin-like cells (ECLs). ECLs of SG-operated patients overexpressed genes coding for biosynthesis of neuropeptides and serotonin. Mathematical modeling showed that pH homeostasis by gastrin is analogous to non-linear proportional and integral control, that drives adaptation of the epithelium to acid-secretion demand. Quantitative model predictions were validated in patients. The results demonstrate human gastric epithelium remodeling following SG at the molecular and cellular levels, and more generally how trophic hormones enable robust adaptation of tissue function to meet physiological demand.

39. Science and Engineering Education as an Anchor in the Midst of a Changing World: The Case of COVID-19

Abstract

The discourse on science and engineering education focuses on ways of preparing students, as future employees, and global citizens. While this discourse deals with the purposes and characteristics of engineering education, it tends to neglect the students' perspectives. The purpose of this study was to provide insights into the perspectives of undergraduate science and engineering students with respect to six factors, during the COVID-19 pandemic: end-of-semester exams, financial situation, social life, extension of study duration, the future of the labor market, and how the world will look. A comprehensive questionnaire was distributed to all undergraduate students in a research science and engineering university in two consecutive academic years. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were applied. Our findings show that science and engineering students were mostly concerned about their end-of-semester exams. Their social life was the only factor that changed between the two periods in terms of the percentage of students who were concerned with it. As for the other factors, the percentage of students who were concerned about them remained comparatively the same in both academic years. The findings highlight the confidence students had during the pandemic, and demonstrate the resilience of science and engineering, especially in times of volatility.

Abstract

Abstract On September 23–24 (2024) the 6th Workshop IRE on Translational Oncology, titled “Cancer Organoids as Reliable Disease Models to Drive Clinical Development of Novel Therapies,” took place at the IRCCS Regina Elena Cancer Institute in Rome. This prominent international conference focused on tumor organoids, bringing together leading experts from around the world. A central challenge in precision oncology is modeling the dynamic tumor ecosystem, which encompasses numerous elements that evolve spatially and temporally. Patient-derived 3D culture models, including organoids, explants, and engineered or bioprinted systems, have recently emerged as sophisticated tools capable of capturing the complexity and diversity of cancer cells interacting within their microenvironments. These models address critical unmet needs in precision medicine, particularly in aiding clinical decision-making. The rapid development of these human tissue avatars has enabled advanced modeling of cellular alterations in disease states and the screening of compounds to uncover novel therapeutic pathways. Throughout the event, distinguished speakers shared their expertise and research findings, illustrating how organoids are transforming our understanding of treatment resistance, metastatic dynamics, and the interaction between tumors and the surrounding microenvironment. This conference served as a pivotal opportunity to strengthen international collaborations and spark innovative translational approaches. Its goal was to accelerate the shift from preclinical research to clinical application, paving the way for increasingly personalized and effective cancer therapies.

41. Quasinormal modes, temperatures and greybody factors of black holes in a generalized Rastall gravity theory

Abstract

We introduce a modification in the energy-momentum conservation violating Rastall's theory of gravity and obtain a Reissner-Nordstr\"om-type black hole solution in spacetime surrounded by a cloud of strings and charge fields. We examine the horizons of the black hole along with the influence of the parameters of the model on it. The scalar quasinormal modes (QNMs) of oscillations of the black hole are also computed using the 6th order WKB approximation method. It is seen that the Rastall parameter $\beta$ and the newly introduced energy-momentum tensor trace parameter $\alpha$ as well as the charge parameter $q$ and strings field parameter $a$ influence the amplitude and damping of the QNMs. From the metric function, we obtain the temperature of the black hole and study the effects of the four model parameters $\beta$, $\alpha$, $q$ and $a$ on the temperature. We then examine the greybody factors associated with the black hole and the corresponding total absorption cross-section for it. It is seen that the modification we introduced in the Rastall theory has a drastic effect on various properties of the black hole and may lead to interesting outcomes in future when the better detection techniques will be available with the LISA and the Einstein Telescope., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures; Published version
