Microwave heating, which is caused by the interaction of electromagnetic radiation and materials, has become an important component in industrial operations across numerous industries. Despite their importance, conventional numerical simulations of microwave heating are computationally intensive. Concurrently, advances in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly machine learning algorithms, have transformed data processing by increasing accuracy while decreasing computational time. This study tackles the difficulty of efficient and accurate modelling in microwave heating by combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with traditional simulation techniques. The major goal of this research is to use CNNs to forecast temperature profiles in a variety of industrial materials, including susceptors, semi-transparent, and microwave-transparent materials, under varying power settings and heating periods. This unique strategy greatly reduces prediction times, with up to 60-fold speed increases over standard methods. Our research is based on examining the electromagnetic and thermal responses of these materials under microwave heating. This study’s findings emphasise the need for extensive datasets and show the transformational potential of CNNs in optimising material processing. It uses artificial intelligence to pave the way for more effective and exact simulations, supporting breakthroughs in industrial microwave heating applications.

Icosahedral boron clusters-based BODIPY dyes represent a cutting-edge class of compounds that merge the unique properties of boron clusters with the exceptional fluorescence characteristics of BODIPY dyes. These kinds of molecules have garnered substantial interest due to their potential applications across various fields, mainly including optoelectronics, bioimaging, and potential use as boron carriers for Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). Carborane clusters are known for their exceptional stability, rigid geometry, and 3D-aromaticity, while BODIPY dyes are renowned for their strong absorption, high fluorescence quantum yields, and photostability. The integration of carborane into BODIPY structures leverages the stability and versatility of carboranes while enhancing the photophysical properties of BODIPY-based fluorophores. This review explores the synthesis and structural diversity of boron clusters-based BODIPY dyes, highlighting how carborane incorporation can lead to significant changes in the electronic and optical properties of the dyes. We discuss the enhanced photophysical characteristics, such as red-shifted absorption and emission poperties, charge and electronic transfer effects, and improved cellular uptake, resulting from carborane substitution. The review also delves into the diverse applications of these compounds. In bioimaging, carborane-BODIPY dyes offer superior fluorescence properties and cellular internalization, making them ideal for cell tracking. In photodynamic therapy, (PDT) these dyes can act as potent photosensitizers capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) for targeted cancer treatment making them excellent candidates for PDT. Additionally, their unique electronic properties make them suitable candidates for optoelectronic applications, including organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and sensors. Overall, carborane-BODIPY dyes represent a versatile and promising class of materials with significant potential for innovation in scientific and technological applications. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on carborane-BODIPY dyes, highlighting their synthesis, properties, and broad application spectrum.

Traditionally, drugs were obtained by extraction from medicinal plants, but more recently also by organic synthesis. Today, medicinal chemistry continues to focus on organic compounds and the majority of commercially available drugs are organic molecules, which can incorporate nitrogen, oxygen, and halogens, as well as carbon and hydrogen. Aromatic organic compounds that play important roles in biochemistry find numerous applications ranging from drug delivery to nanotechnology or biomarkers. We achieved a major accomplishment by demonstrating experimentally/theoretically that boranes, carboranes, as well as metallabis(dicarbollides), exhibit global 3D aromaticity. Based on the stability–aromaticity relationship, as well as on the progress made in the synthesis of derivatized clusters, we have opened up new applications of boron icosahedral clusters as key components in the field of novel healthcare materials. In this brief review, we present the results obtained at the Laboratory of Inorganic Materials and Catalysis (LMI) of the Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) with icosahedral boron clusters. These 3D geometric shape clusters, the semi-metallic nature of boron and the presence of exo-cluster hydrogen atoms that can interact with biomolecules through non-covalent hydrogen and dihydrogen bonds, play a key role in endowing these compounds with unique properties in largely unexplored (bio)materials.

A set of mesomorphic materials in which the o-carborane cluster is covalently bonded to a cholesteryl benzoate moiety (mesogen group) through a suitably designed linker is described. The olefin cross-metathesis between appropriately functionalized styrenyl-o-carborane derivatives and a terminal alkenyl cholesteryl benzoate mesogen (all type I terminal olefins) leads to the desired trans-regioisomer, which is the best-suited configuration to obtain mesomorphic properties in the final materials. The introduction of different substituents (R = H (M2), Me (M3), or Ph (M4)) to one of the carbon atoms of the o-carborane cluster (Ccluster) enables the tailoring of liquid crystalline properties. Compounds M2 and M3 show the chiral nematic (N*) phase, whereas M4 do not show liquid crystal behavior. Weaker intermolecular interactions in the solid M3 with respect to those in M2 may allow the liquid crystallinity in M3 to be expressed as enantiotropic behavior, whereas breaking the stronger intermolecular interaction in the solid state of M2 leads directly to the isotropic state, resulting in monotropic behavior. Remarkably, M3 also displays the blue phase, which was observed neither in the chiral nematic precursor nor in the styrenyl-cholesterol model (M5) without an o-carborane cluster, which suggests that the presence of the cluster plays a role in stabilizing this highly twisted chiral phase. In the carborane-containing mesogens (M2 and M3), the o-carborane cluster can be incorporated without destroying the helical organization of the mesophase.

High boron content systems were prepared by the peripheral functionalisation of 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene (TPB) and octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) with two different anionic boron clusters: closo-dodecaborate (B12) and cobaltabisdicarbollide (COSAN). TPB was successfully decorated with three cluster units by an oxonium ring-opening reaction, while OVS was bonded to eight clusters by catalysed metathesis cross-coupling. The resulting compounds were spectroscopically characterised, and their solution-state photophysical properties analysed. For TPB, the presence of COSAN dramatically quenches the fluorescence emission (λem = 369 nm; ΦF = 0.8%), while B12-substituted TPB shows an appreciable emission efficiency (λem = 394 nm; ΦF = 12.8%). For octasilsesquioxanes, the presence of either COSAN or B12 seems to be responsible for ∼80 nm bathochromic shift with respect to the core emission, but both cases show low emission fluorescence (ΦF = 1.4−1.8%). In addition, a remarkable improvement of the thermal stability of OVS was observed after its functionalisation with these boron clusters.

A new family of photoluminescent neutral and anionic di-carboranyl and tetra-carboranyl derivatives have been synthesized and characterized. The reaction of α,α′-bis(3,5-bis(bromomethyl)phenoxy-m-xylene with 4 equiv. of the monolithium salt of 1-Ph-1,2-C2B10H11or 1-Me-1,2-C2B10H11gives the neutral tetracarboranyl-functionalized aryl ether derivatives closo-1and closo-2, respectively. The addition of the monolithium salt of 1-Ph-1,2-closo-C2B10H11to α,α,′-dibromo-m-xylene or 2,6-dibromomethyl-pyridine gives the corresponding di-carboranyl derivatives closo-3and closo-4. These compounds, which contain four or two closoclusters, were degraded using the classical method, KOH in EtOH, affording the corresponding nidospecies, which were isolated as potassium or tetramethylammonium salts. All the compounds were characterized by IR, 1H, 11B and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and the crystal structure of closo-3was analysed by X-ray diffraction. The carboranyl fragments are bonded through CH2units to different organic moieties, and their influence on the photoluminescent properties of the final molecules has been studied. All the closo- and nido-carborane derivatives exhibit a blue emission under ultraviolet excitation at room temperature in different solvents. The fluorescence properties of these closoand nido-derivatives depend on the substituent (Ph or Me) bonded to the Ccluster, the solvent polarity, and the organic unit bearing the carborane clusters (benzene or pyridine). The influence of the electron-donor or electron-acceptor capacity of the R groups (R = iPr, Ph, Et) and the solvent on the molecular geometry in solution of adducts of carboranylphosphanes [(carboranyl)iPr2P, (carboranyl)Ph2P and (carboranyl)Et2P] with I2 in 1 : 1 ratios, has been studied in detail by 31P{1H} and 11B{1H} NMR spectroscopies. The more electron-accepting Ph groups make the (carboranyl)Ph2P less nucleophilic, thus stabilizing the I2 encapsulated neutral biscarboranylphosphane–diiodine adducts in solution, such as (carboranyl)Ph2P⋯I–I⋯PPh2(carboranyl), generating P⋯I–I⋯P motifs. Even in a polar solvent, such as EtOH, the arrangement is preserved. The expected basicity of these carboranylphosphanes is: (carboranyl)iPr2P > (carboranyl)Et2P > (carboranyl)Ph2P. Thus, the comparatively higher basicity of (carboranyl)Et2P vs. (carboranyl)Ph2P facilitates a higher transfer of electron density to the I2 σ*, generating the ionic species, [(carboranyl)Et2PI]+I−, even in low polar solvents, such as CH2Cl2 and toluene, with no degradation of the cluster. However, in EtOH, the formation of the anionic [7,8-nido-C2B9H10]− cluster takes place by removal of one boron atom from the closo cluster. The basicity of (carboranyl)iPr2P should be the highest, superior to (carboranyl)Et2P. This is observed in the reaction of these carboranylphosphanes with I2 in EtOH. Whereas the formation of P four-coordinated molecular “spoke” charge-transfer complexes, (carboranyl)iPr2P–I–I, are suggested for (carboranyl)iPr2P in low polarity solvents, ionic species are formed in ethanolic solutions, which deboronate in a few days, faster than (carboranyl)Et2P, to yield the zwitterionic species. This is attributed to the higher basicity of (carboranyl)iPr2P vs. (carboranyl)Et2P. The X-ray crystal structure of [7-PIiPr2-8-Ph-7,8-nido-C2B9H10], 2c, obtained from the reaction of 1-PiPr2-2-Ph-closo-1,2-closo-C2B10H10 with I2 in EtOH, confirms the formation of the zwitterion. These results prove that minor changes in the nature of the R substituents on the P atom in carboranylphosphanes, along with the solvent in which the reaction takes place, produce major alterations in the geometry of the (carboranyl)R2P–I–I species in solution, and in their possible further reactivity. The reaction of α,α′-bis(3,5-bis(bromomethyl)phenoxy-p-xylene (3) with 4 equiv of the monolithium salt of 1-Ph-1,2-C2B10H11 or 1-Me-1,2-C2B10H11 gave the corresponding neutral carboranyl-functionalized aryl ether derivatives closo-4 and closo-5, respectively. These compounds contain four closo clusters that were degraded using basic conditions with KOH in EtOH, affording the corresponding nido-6 and nido-7 as potassium salts. Nido species were also isolated with tetramethylammonium as cation giving compounds nido-8 and nido-9 in good yield. The potassium salts showed good solubility in water and polar solvents. All these compounds were characterized by 1H, 11B and 13C NMR spectroscopy and UV-vis. The electronic data in different solvents indicated a solvatochromic shift for all compounds and a red shift of the absorption maxima for the nido species with respect to the closo derivatives. These neutral and anionic carboranyl-functionalized aryl ether derivatives represent a new family of high boron content luminescent compounds that show strong fluorescence emission in different solvents at room temperature. This phenomenon is very interesting considering the fact that none of the precursors have such a property. The fluorescence emission depends on the cluster substituent (Ph or Me) and the solvent polarity. Additionally, the fluorescence emission intensity was clearly dependent on the solvent polarity; the closo species showed strongest fluorescence intensities in the non-polar solvents, while anionic species were highly emissive in polar solvents.
