Background/Purpose: Organized events with environmental and outdoor education (EOE) components have the potential to change participant environmental behaviors. This study further investigates emergent outcomes, meanings, and effect on behavior that an organized, community-based, multigenerational river canoeing and kayaking event may have for its participants and considers these intersections of pro-environmental behavior, sense of place, and multigenerational community involvement. Methodology/Approach: Research participants experienced a multi-day canoeing and kayaking event and were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews (n = 13). Participants ranged from teen-age to older adults. This research uses a qualitative methodology and a data collection procedure which employs semi-structured interviews conducted on the water, in-situ, during the program. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Findings: Emergent themes and sub-themes including experiential learning's effect on knowledge acquisition, changes in attitude and environmental behavior, the value of rivers, and sense of place and socio-cultural outcomes related to such EOE programs. Implications: These results support experientially based EOE programs effectiveness for the continued development of pro-environmental behavior in the citizenry. This research aims to add to the current EOE literature on diverse and inclusive socially supported, community engagement EOE programs through a diverse sample (i.e., age, gender, race/ethnicity, etc.).

Abstract Background Tick-borne pathogens are understudied among domestic animals in sub-Saharan Africa but represent significant threats to the health of domestic animals and humans. Specifically, additional data are needed on tick-borne pathogens in Chad, Africa. Surveillance was conducted among domestic dogs in Chad for selected tick-borne pathogens to measure (1) the prevalence of antibodies against Anaplasma spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, and Ehrlichia spp.; (2) the prevalence of infections caused by Hepatozoon spp., Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma platys, and Babesia spp.; and (3) associations of pathogens with demographic, spatial, and temporal factors. Blood samples were collected from domestic dogs at three time points (May 2019, November 2019, June 2020) across 23 villages in southern Chad. Results Of the 428 dogs tested with the IDEXX SNAP 4Dx test in May 2019, 86% (n = 370, 95% CI = 83–90%) were positive for antibodies to Ehrlichia spp., 21% (n = 88, 95% CI = 17–25%) were positive for antibodies to Anaplasma spp., and 0.7% (n = 3, 95% CI = 0.1–2%) were positive for antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. Four different pathogens were detected via PCR. Hepatozoon spp. were most commonly detected (67.2–93.4%, depending on the time point of sampling), followed by E. canis (7.0-27.8%), A. platys (10.1–22.0%), and Babesia vogeli (0.4–1.9%). Dogs were coinfected with up to three pathogens at a single time point, and coinfections were most common in May 2019 compared to November 2019 and May 2020. Conclusions Overall, this study provides new data about the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens in domestic dogs in Chad, with potential implications for dog and human health.

Abstract Background TAR DNA-Binding Protein 43 (TDP-43) pathological inclusions are a distinctive feature in dozens of neurodegenerative pathologies, including limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC). Prior investigations identified vascular-associated TDP-43-positive micro-lesions, known as “Lin bodies,” located on or near the brain capillaries of some individuals with LATE-NC. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the accumulation of Lin bodies and glial cells in LATE-NC and the potential co-localization with ferritin, a protein associated with iron storage. Using multiplexed immunohistochemistry and digital pathology tools, we conducted pathological analyses to investigate the relationship between Lin bodies and glial markers (GFAP for astrocytes, IBA1 for microglia) and ferritin. Analyses were conducted on post-mortem brain tissues collected from individuals with pathologically confirmed Alzheimer’s disease neuropathological changes (ADNC) and LATE-NC. Results As shown previously, there was a robust association between Lin bodies and GFAP-positive astrocyte processes. Moreover, we also observed Lin bodies frequently co-localizing with ferritin, suggesting a potential link to compromised vascular integrity. Subsequent analyses demonstrated increased astrocytosis near Lin body-positive vessels compared to those without Lin bodies, particularly in ADNC cases. These results suggest that the accumulation of Lin bodies may elicit an increased glial response, particularly among astrocytes, possibly related to impaired vascular integrity. Conclusions Lin bodies are associated with a local reactive glial response. The strong association of Lin bodies with ferritin suggests that the loss of vascular integrity may be either a cause or a consequence of the pTDP-43 pathology. The reactive glia surrounding the affected vessels could further compromise vascular function.

This study evaluated the feasibility of utilizing a continuous glucose monitors (CGM) designed for use in humans to measure glucose levels in sheep. Four Suffolk x Dorset sheep were fitted with jugular catheters and FreeStyle Libre 2 (Abbott®) glucose monitors. Glucose concentration from the CGM were compared with those from a glucometer and traditional assays during a hyperglycemic clamp, aiming to explore a broader range of physiological glucose concentrations in a controlled manner. Abstract Ontogenetic changes in area use, habitat use, and trophic interactions play an important role in the ecology, demography, and ultimately population dynamics of many species. Assumed to be driven by shifting life‐history requirements, trophic niche shifts in white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are well documented, but the timing of the spatial niche shift that is hypothesized to occur with the trophic niche shift remains poorly understood. To document how fine‐scale area use varies as sharks age and the timing of the ontogenetic spatial shift of this top predator, we tracked individual white sharks tagged as young‐of‐the‐year or young juveniles over multiple years. Using data from juvenile white sharks detected over multiple years in a nursery habitat with a high‐density receiver array, we found no difference in area use with age. However, using a coast‐wide receiver array including nursery and adult habitat, we found the probability of detecting a juvenile white shark in nursery habitat decreased with age, with a concurrent increasing probability of detection in adult habitat. As the conservation and management of this species relies on understanding nursery habitat use and age‐related movements, data presented here address an important knowledge gap for the understudied juvenile to subadult life stages and the ontogenetic habitat shift of this species.

Objective In high HIV-burden countries like Uganda, financing and resource allocation for HIV services have rapidly evolved. This study aimed to employ time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) to examine the allocation of resources and associated costs for HIV care throughout the country.Design A cross-sectional study.Setting This study was conducted at 31 health facilities throughout Uganda: 16 level III health centres, 10 level IV health centres and 5 district hospitals.Participants 1119 persons receiving HIV services in 2020.Methods We conducted TDABC to quantify costs, resource consumption and duration of service provision associated with antiretroviral therapy, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, HIV counselling and testing (HCT), voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) and pre-exposure prophylaxis. We also quantified disparities in resource consumption according to client-level and facility-level characteristics to examine equity. Fixed-effects multivariable regression analyses were employed to inspect factors associated with service costs and provider-client interaction time.Results The mean cost of services ranged from US$8.18 per visit for HCT to US$32.28 for VMMC. ABSTRACT The microbiome of wild animals is believed to be co-evolved with host species, which may play an important role in host physiology. It has been hypothesized that the rigorous hygienic practices in combination with antibiotics and diets with simplified formulas used in the modern swine industry may negatively affect the establishment and development of the gut microbiome. In this study, we evaluated the fecal microbiome of 90 domestic pigs sampled from nine farms in Canada and 39 wild pigs sampled from three different locations on two continents (North America and Europe) using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Surprisingly, the gut microbiome in domestic pigs exhibited higher alpha-diversity indices than wild pigs (P < 0.0001). The wild pig microbiome showed a lower Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio and a higher presence of bacterial phyla Elusimicrobiota, Verrucomicrobiota, Cyanobacteria, and Fibrobacterota when compared to their domestic counterparts. At the genus level, the wild pig microbiome had enriched genera that were known for fiber degradation and short-chain fatty acid production. Interestingly, the phylum Fusobacteriota was only observed in domestic pigs. We identified 31 ASVs that were commonly found in the pig gut microbiome, regardless of host sources, which could be recognized as members of the core gut microbiome. Interestingly, we found five ASVs missing in domestic pigs that were prevalent in wild ones, whereas domestic pigs harbored 59 ASVs that were completely absent in wild pigs. The present study sheds light on the impact of domestication on the pig gut microbiome, including the gain of new genera, which might provide the basis to identify novel targets to manipulate the pig gut microbiome for improved health.IMPORTANCEThe microbiome of pigs plays a crucial role in shaping host physiology and health. This study sought to identify if domestication and current rearing practices have resulted in a loss of co-evolved bacterial species by comparing the microbiome of wild boar and conventionally raised pigs. It provides a comparison of domestic and wild pigs with the largest sample sizes and is the first to examine wild boars from multiple sites and continents. We were able to identify core microbiome members that were shared between wild and domestic populations, and on the contrary to expectation, few microbes were identified to be lost from wild boar. Nevertheless, the microbiome of wild boars had a lower abundance of important pathogenic genera and was distinct from domestic pigs. The differences in the microbial composition may identify an opportunity to shift the microbial community of domestic pigs towards that of wild boar with the intent to reduce pathogen load.

We assessed 160 patients who received imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam for ≥2 days. At treatment initiation, the median Charlson Comorbidity Index was 5, 45% were in the intensive care unit, and 19% required vasopressor support. The in-hospital mortality rate was 24%. These data advance our understanding of real-world indications and outcomes of imipenem/cilastatin/relebactam use.

Abstract Introduction Ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) is a combination of the third-generation cephalosporin ceftazidime and the novel, non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor avibactam that is approved for the treatment of pediatric (≥ 3 months) and adult patients with complicated infections including hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia (HAP/VAP), and bacteremia. This systematic literature review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registration: CRD42022362856) aimed to provide a quantitative and qualitative synthesis to evaluate the effectiveness of CAZ-AVI in treating adult patients with bacteremia or nosocomial pneumonia caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (non metallo-β-lactamase-producing strains) and multi-drug resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Methods The databases included in the search, until November 7, 2022, were Embase and PubMed. A total of 24 studies (retrospective: 22, prospective: 2) with separate outcomes for patients with bacteremia or pneumonia were included. Results The outcomes assessed were all-cause mortality, clinical cure, and microbiological cure. Qualitative (24 studies) and quantitative (8/24 studies) syntheses were performed. The quality of the studies was assessed using the MINORS checklist and the overall risk of bias was moderate to high. Conclusions In studies included in the meta-analysis, lower all-cause mortality for patients with bacteremia (OR = 0.30, 95% CI 0.19–0.46) and improved rates of clinical cure for patients with bacteremia (OR = 4.90, 95% CI 2.60–9.23) and nosocomial pneumonia (OR = 3.20, 95% CI 1.55–6.60) was observed in the CAZ-AVI group compared with the comparator group. Data provided here may be considered while using CAZ-AVI for the treatment of patients with difficult-to-treat infections. Systematic Review Registration PROSPERO CRD42022362856.

Background:. Minimally invasive surgical interventions for metastatic invasion of the pelvis have become more prevalent and varied. Our group hypothesized that the use of percutaneous photodynamic nails (PDNs) would result in decreased pain, improved functional outcomes and level of ambulation, and decreased use of opioid pain medication. Methods:. We performed a retrospective chart review of patients with metastatic pelvic bone disease undergoing stabilization with PDNs (IlluminOss Medical) at 2 institutions. Functional outcome measures assessed include the Combined Pain and Ambulatory Function (CPAF), Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Physical Function, and PROMIS Global Health-Physical. Pain was assessed using a visual analog scale (VAS). Outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year following surgery. Results:. A total of 39 patients treated with PDNs were included. No cases of surgical site infection or implant failure were identified. The median pain VAS score decreased from 8 preoperatively to 0 at the 6-week time point (p < 0.0001). The median CPAF score improved from 5.5 points preoperatively to 7 points at the 3-month mark (p = 0.0132). A significant improvement in physical function was seen at 6 months in the PROMIS Physical Function (p = 0.02) and at both 6 months (p = 0.01) and 1 year (p < 0.01) for the PROMIS Global Health-Physical. The rate of patients prescribed opioid analgesia dropped from 100% preoperatively to 20% at 6 months following surgery (p < 0.001). By 6 weeks, all patients were fully weight-bearing and able to walk independently with or without assistive devices. Conclusions:. Percutaneous stabilization of metastatic periacetabular defects using PDNs is a safe and effective palliative procedure that has been shown to improve patient mobility and provide early pain relief. Objective To evaluate resource allocation and costs associated with delivery of human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) services In Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. Methods We used time-driven activity-based costing to determine the resources consumed and costs of providing five HIV services in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania: antiretroviral therapy (ART); HIV testing and counselling; prevention of mother-to-child transmission; voluntary male medical circumcision; and pre-exposure prophylaxis. Findings Country-based teams undertook time-driven activity-based costing with 1119 adults in Uganda and 886 adults in the United Republic of Tanzania. In Uganda, service delivery costs ranged from 8.18 United States dollars (US$) per visit for HIV testing and counselling to US$ 43.43 for ART (for clients in whom HIV was suppressed). In the United Republic of Tanzania, these costs ranged from US$ 3.67 per visit for HIV testing and counselling to US$ 28.00 for voluntary male medical circumcision. In both countries, consumables were the main cost driver, accounting for more than 60% of expenditure. Process maps showed that in both countries, registration, measurement of vital signs, consultation and medication dispensing were the steps that occurred most frequently for ART clients. Conclusion Establishing a rigorous, longitudinal system for tracking investments in HIV services that includes thousands of clients and numerous facilities is achievable in different settings with a high HIV burden. Consistent engagement of implementation partners and standardized training and data collection instruments proved essential for the success of these exercises. Abstract Plant biomass is a fundamental ecosystem attribute that is sensitive to rapid climatic changes occurring in the Arctic. Nevertheless, measuring plant biomass in the Arctic is logistically challenging and resource intensive. Lack of accessible field data hinders efforts to understand the amount, composition, distribution, and changes in plant biomass in these northern ecosystems. Here, we present The Arctic plant aboveground biomass synthesis dataset, which includes field measurements of lichen, bryophyte, herb, shrub, and/or tree aboveground biomass (g m−2) on 2,327 sample plots from 636 field sites in seven countries. We created the synthesis dataset by assembling and harmonizing 32 individual datasets. Aboveground biomass was primarily quantified by harvesting sample plots during mid- to late-summer, though tree and often tall shrub biomass were quantified using surveys and allometric models. Each biomass measurement is associated with metadata including sample date, location, method, data source, and other information. This unique dataset can be leveraged to monitor, map, and model plant biomass across the rapidly warming Arctic.

Background/Objectives: To review the findings of a multiparametric MRI (the “liver triple screen”) solution for the non-invasive assessment of liver fat, iron, and fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). Methods: A retrospective evaluation of all consecutive triple screen MRI cases was performed at our institution over the last 32 months. Relevant clinical, laboratory, and radiologic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: There were 268 patients, including 162 (60.4%) males and 106 (39.6%) females. The mean age was 54 ± 15.2 years (range 16 to 71 years). The most common cause of CLD was metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) at 45.5%. The most common referring physician group was Gastroenterology at 62.7%. In 23.9% of cases, the reason for ordering the MRI was a pre-existing failed or unreliable US elastography. There were 17 cases (6.3%) of MRI technical failure. Our analysis revealed liver fibrosis in 66% of patients, steatosis in 68.3%, and iron overload in 22.1%. Combined fibrosis and steatosis were seen in 28.7%, steatosis and iron overload in 16.8%, fibrosis and iron overload in 6%, and combined fibrosis, steatosis, and iron overload in 4.1%. A positive MEFIB index, a predictor of liver-related outcomes, was found in 57 (27.5%) of 207 patients. Incidental findings were found in 14.9% of all MRIs. Conclusions: The liver triple screen MRI is an effective tool for evaluating liver fat, iron, and fibrosis in patients with CLD. It provides essential clinical information and can help identify MASLD patients at risk for liver-related outcomes.

Rationale & Objective: Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S lugdunensis) is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus species that has been increasingly recognized to cause serious infections with virulence resembling Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus). No studies have evaluated the characteristics and outcomes of patients with S lugdunensis peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis compared with those with S aureus peritonitis. We aim to evaluate the clinical course of peritonitis as caused by these organisms. Study Design: A retrospective matched comparative analysis involving a single tertiary center from July 2000 to July 2020. Setting & Participants: Forty-eight episodes of S aureus peritonitis were matched to 19 cases of S lugdunensis peritonitis. Analytical Approach: The cases were individually matched for year of peritonitis, sex, age (±10 years), and Charlson Comorbidity Index (±3). A comparative analysis was performed between the 2 organisms. The outcome includes responses at day 5 of peritonitis and the rate of complete response. Results: There is a higher predilection of diabetes in those with S aureus peritonitis than in those with S lugdunensis (64.6% vs 31.6%; P = 0.03). Patients with S aureus peritonitis also have a much higher total cell count at presentation (4,463.9 ± 5,479.5 vs 1,807.9 ± 3,322.7; P = 0.05); a higher prevalence of poor response at day 5 (50.0% vs 15.8%; P = 0.03); a lower rate of complete response (64.6% vs 94.7%; P = 0.01) and are more prone to relapse with the same organism (29.2% vs 0%, respectively; P = 0.01) as compared to those with S lugdunensis. Limitations: The result of this small retrospective study involving a single center may not be generalizable to other centers. There is also no data for comparative analysis on other coagulase-negative staphylococci such as Staphylococcus epidermidis, which belongs to the same family as S lugdunensis. Conclusions: Although S aureus peritonitis is more virulent with significant morbidity, S lugdunensis can cause similarly serious peritonitis. This largest case series of S lugdunensis peritonitis enabled better characterization of clinical features and outcomes of patients with S lugdunensis peritonitis. Plain Language Summary: Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus species that has been increasingly recognized to cause serious infections with virulence resembling Staphylococcus aureus. No studies have evaluated the characteristics and outcomes of patients with S lugdunensis peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis compared those with S aureus peritonitis. This largest retrospective matched comparative analysis of S lugdunensis peritonitis enabled better characterization of clinical features and outcomes of patients with S lugdunensis. Our result suggested that although S. aureus peritonitis is more virulent with significant morbidity, S lugdunensis can cause similarly serious peritonitis. Regardless, S lugdunensis remains susceptible to most antibiotics and penicillin group, penicillin G in particular, can be considered as the first line antibiotic.

The mortality of wildlife on roadways is a major conservation concern worldwide. Amphibians and reptiles are especially vulnerable to vehicular collisions, and this is of particular concern in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve (Ontario, Canada) where several species are near their geographic limits of distribution and designated as species-at-risk. We completed regular surveys (n = 270) of two major highways in the Reserve, each slightly less than 40 km in length. All observations of wildlife-vehicle collisions were documented for two years on each road, including 18,278 frogs, turtles, and snakes. We used kernel density estimation to map relative magnitude of this mortality and built a suite of regression tree models to assess the influence of landcover and other habitat factors on roadkill at two scales (1 ha and 20 ha). Sample size was large enough to conduct species-level analyses for Chrysemys picta marginata (midland painted turtle) and Nerodia sipedon (northern watersnake). Spatial clustering of roadkill was evident on both roads and for all taxa. However, the extent of clustering varied between the two roadways due to differences in landcover pattern and clustering was more discrete for frogs and turtles than for snakes. For frogs, turtles, and northern watersnakes we found that elevated levels of mortality were positively associated with the amount of wetland and open water in adjacent areas as well as the proximity of water features. However, mortality locations for other species of snakes were more closely associated with upland habitat types. While some generalities emerge from our study, the variation also suggests that caution be exercised when attempting to extend results to different taxa and roadways, especially since these results may vary with scale. Nonetheless, scale-related differences can be informative for identifying the location of roadkill mitigation efforts and we illustrate how such an approach could be implemented for snakes that exhibit less discrete clustering of mortality.

Abstract The self-assembly of complex structures from a set of non-identical building blocks is a hallmark of soft matter and biological systems, including protein complexes, colloidal clusters, and DNA-based assemblies. Predicting the dependence of the equilibrium assembly yield on the concentrations and interaction energies of building blocks is highly challenging, owing to the difficulty of computing the entropic contributions to the free energy of the many structures that compete with the ground state configuration. While these calculations yield well known results for spherically symmetric building blocks, they do not hold when the building blocks have internal rotational degrees of freedom. Here we present an approach for solving this problem that works with arbitrary building blocks, including proteins with known structure and complex colloidal building blocks. Our algorithm combines classical statistical mechanics with recently developed computational tools for automatic differentiation. Automatic differentiation allows efficient evaluation of equilibrium averages over configurations that would otherwise be intractable. We demonstrate the validity of our framework by comparison to molecular dynamics simulations of simple examples, and apply it to calculate the yield curves for known protein complexes and for the assembly of colloidal shells.

Abstract Background Elevated triglyceride (TG) levels are a heritable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and have well-established associations with common genetic variation captured in a polygenic risk score (PRS). In young adulthood, the 22q11.2 microdeletion conveys a 2-fold increased risk for mild-moderate hypertriglyceridemia. This study aimed to assess the role of the TG-PRS in individuals with this elevated baseline risk for mild-moderate hypertriglyceridemia. Methods We studied a deeply phenotyped cohort of adults (n = 157, median age 34 years) with a 22q11.2 microdeletion and available genome sequencing, lipid level, and other clinical data. The association between a previously developed TG-PRS and TG levels was assessed using a multivariable regression model adjusting for effects of sex, BMI, and other covariates. We also constructed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves using logistic regression models to assess the ability of TG-PRS and significant clinical variables to predict mild-moderate hypertriglyceridemia status. Results The TG-PRS was a significant predictor of TG-levels (p = 1.52E-04), along with male sex and BMI, in a multivariable model (pmodel = 7.26E-05). The effect of TG-PRS appeared to be slightly stronger in individuals with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) (beta = 0.4617) than without (beta = 0.1778), in a model unadjusted for other covariates (p-interaction = 0.045). Among ROC curves constructed, the inclusion of TG-PRS, sex, and BMI as predictor variables produced the greatest area under the curve (0.749) for classifying those with mild-moderate hypertriglyceridemia, achieving an optimal sensitivity and specificity of 0.746 and 0.707, respectively. Conclusions These results demonstrate that in addition to significant effects of sex and BMI, genome-wide common variation captured in a PRS also contributes to the variable expression of the 22q11.2 microdeletion with respect to elevated TG levels.

Abstract Neuroinflammation contributes to secondary injury cascades following traumatic brain injury (TBI), with alternating waves of inflammation and resolution. Interleukin-1 (IL-1), a critical neuroinflammatory mediator originating from brain endothelial cells, microglia, astrocytes, and peripheral immune cells, is acutely overexpressed after TBI, propagating secondary injury and tissue damage. IL-1 affects blood–brain barrier permeability, immune cell activation, and neural plasticity. Despite the complexity of cytokine signaling post-TBI, we hypothesize that IL-1 signaling specifically regulates neuroinflammatory response components. Using a closed-head injury (CHI) TBI model, we investigated IL-1's role in the neuroinflammatory cascade with a new global knock-out (gKO) mouse model of the IL-1 receptor (IL-1R1), which efficiently eliminates all IL-1 signaling. We found that IL-1R1 gKO attenuated behavioral impairments 14 weeks post-injury and reduced reactive microglia and astrocyte staining in the neocortex, corpus callosum, and hippocampus. We then examined whether IL-1R1 loss altered acute neuroinflammatory dynamics, measuring gene expression changes in the neocortex at 3, 9, 24, and 72 h post-CHI using the NanoString Neuroinflammatory panel. Of 757 analyzed genes, IL-1R1 signaling showed temporal specificity in neuroinflammatory gene regulation, with major effects at 9 h post-CHI. IL-1R1 signaling specifically affected astrocyte-related genes, selectively upregulating chemokines like Ccl2, Ccl3, and Ccl4, while having limited impact on cytokine regulation, such as Tnfα. This study provides further insight into IL-1R1 function in amplifying the neuroinflammatory cascade following CHI in mice and demonstrates that suppression of IL-1R1 signaling offers long-term protective effects on brain health.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a hands‐on simulation‐based course with emphasis on procedural techniques, clinical reasoning, and communication skills developed to improve junior Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) residents' preparedness in managing otolaryngologic emergencies. Methods Junior OHNS residents and faculty from residency programs in California, Nevada, and Arizona participated in this workshop in 2020 and 2021. The stations featured airway management techniques, ultrasound‐guided needle aspiration, nasoseptal hematoma evacuation, and facial fracture repair using various models and cadavers. Participants completed a pre‐workshop survey, post‐workshop survey, and 2‐month follow‐up survey that assessed resident anxiety and confidence in three OHNS emergency situations across knowledge, manual skills, and teamwork using a 5‐point Likert scale. Results Pre‐workshop surveys reported the least anxiety and most confidence in teamwork, but the most anxiety and least confidence in technical skills and knowledge related to foreign body retrieval and airway management. Immediately post‐workshop participants reported significant reductions in anxiety and increases in confidence, largest in the manual skills domain, in foreign body retrieval (anxiety: −0.99, confidence: +0.95, p
