The wide variability in functional traits that enable the cosmopolitan distribution of lichens often includes the water storage capacity, S, of their thallus. Lichen S in forest canopies can be large enough to intercept and evaporate significant amounts of rainwater, contributing to the runoff-reduction ecosystem services provided by urban forests; however, S is likely influenced by the presence of air pollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs) in urban areas. PAHs, being both chemically hydrophobic and damaging to lichen thalli, are expected to reduce lichens’ S and, thereby, limit their contribution to hydrologic ecoservices of urban forests. Hence, the relationship between PAH accumulation and rainwater uptake was examined for two lichen species, common in urban forests around the world – Platismatia glauca and Pseudevernia furfuracea. Samples were collected from an area of low air pollution and another area in a highly urbanized city centre with high air pollution exposure (Kraków, Poland). Lichen S was determined using laboratory-simulated rainfall. PAH bioaccumulation differed between species and among the samples from clean and polluted environments. After exposure to polluted air, the concentration of PAHs was higher in P. glauca than P. furfuracea. Samples from the non-urban setting, however, showed no differences between the two species. In the case of P. glauca, S decreased from 35.8% in samples from clean environment to 8.3% after six months of exposure in the urban setting. The respective S values for P. furfuracea were 25.4% and 12.4%. Results strongly suggest that PAH exposure reduces S in both lichen species.

This paper presents the diversification of fluvial sediments caused by the occurrence of coarse woody debris (CWD), boulder steps (BSs), and mixed structures (MSs), understood as a combination of CWD and BSs in a stream channel in a small forested catchment in the Polish Carpathians. This research is crucial for understanding the role of this kind of threshold present in a stream channel in shaping fluvial sediment characteristics in small forested mountain catchments. Our hypothesis is that the threshold type in a stream channel determines fluvial sediment diversification. This was verified in field research, including identification of the channel's morphodynamic structure and the morphometric characteristics of CWD, BSs, and MSs as well as the collection of fluvial sediments upstream and downstream of them. In order to preserve research objectivity, tests were performed during comparable flow conditions in the summer (EX1) and autumn (EX2) periods. The statistical analysis showed that the type of threshold significantly affects the processing, size, and shape diversification of mineral material. Woody debris (WD) stabilizes riverbeds, creates habitats, supports biodiversity, and enhances water quality in ecosystems. This study investigates the impact of WD on sediment characteristics and particulate organic matter (POM) accumulation in the Roztoka stream, located within a forested catchment in the Polish Carpathians. The focus is on the influence of different WD types: coarse (CWD, length > 1 m and diameter > 10 cm), fine (FWD, length < 1 m and diameter < 10 cm), and mixed (MWD, a combination of CWD and FWD) on sediment differentiation and POM accumulation. Stand age, ranging from 20 to over 120 years (in 20-year intervals), was also analyzed as a factor affecting WD structure and POM deposition. Results indicate that MWD had the greatest effect on sediment differentiation, with mean grain size (Mz) ranging from -3.91 phi to -0.95 phi. Stand age significantly influenced POM accumulation, with the highest content (19.51%) observed in age classes III and VI. Older stands (> 120 years) had a diminished effect on both WD structure and POM accumulation. This study underscores the critical role of WD in sediment differentiation and provides insights for improving the ecological function of natural streams. An investigation to determine the transition zone between the hillslope system and the fluvial system in connection with the degree of differentiation of sediment located upstream and downstream of log steps (LS) and boulder steps (BS) was undertaken in the channel of a stream located in a small mountain catchment area in the Silesian Beskidy Mts. (Polish Carpathians), a stream channel into which large wood was introduced artificially several years ago. Granulometric analyses of 41 samples taken from upstream (21) and downstream (20) of steps were performed to analyze the effectiveness of log steps and boulder steps in the differentiation of mineral sediment. It was demonstrated that log steps have a significant impact on the functioning of the channel by shaping its longitudinal profile and affecting the transport of mineral material, whereas boulder steps retain less sediment, showing the beneficial effects of artificial creation of log steps in mountain stream channels. Results of granulometric analyses suggested the location of the theoretical transition zone between the hillslope system and the fluvial system, suggesting the location and range of this zone in small mountain catchment areas can change depending on the intensity and range of slope processes in the longitudinal profile of the channel. Leaf surface wettability and factors which determine it are key in determining the water storage capacity of tree crowns and thus the interception of entire stands. Leaf wettability, expressed as the droplet inclination angle, and the surface free energy largely depend not only on the chemical composition of the leaves but also on their texture. The study concerns 12 species of trees common in Central Europe. The content of epicuticular waxes was determined in the leaves, and values ranging from 9.145 [µg/cm2] for horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L.) to 71.759 [µg/cm2] for birch (Betula pendula Roth.) were obtained. Each additional µg/cm2 increases the canopy water storage capacity by 0.067 g g−1. For all species, the inclination angles of water, diiodomethane and glycerin droplets to the leaf surface were measured and the surface free energy was calculated. It is shown that it is the wax content and the species that constitute independent predictors of water storage capacity. These factors explain the 95.56% effect on the value of canopy water storage capacity. The remaining 4.44% indicate non-species-related individual features or the ability to mitigate pollutants as well as possible environmental factors. Wax analyzed separately from other factors causes a slight increase (by 0.067 g/g) of S. Nevertheless, the influence of the surface condition as a result of species-related variability is decisive for the value of the canopy water storage capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study presents the diversification of sediments deposited on log (LS), boulder (BS) and mixed-type (LBS) steps located in the channel of a stream in a small forest mountain catchment in the Polish Carpathians. The topic of sediment diversification in a stream channel is an important issue not only from the perspective of sediment transport process and shaping fluvial systems in forested catchments caused by woody or rock debris but also in the context of functioning of local ecosystems. We aimed to test the following hypothesis: the morphodynamic features of a stream channel and the type of steps therein significantly affect the diversification of the size and shape of mineral deposits and play an important role in the process of sediments transport and processing in the channels of small mountain streams. In order to verify the above hypothesis, sediments were sampled directly from the stream channel (Ch) in its longitudinal profile as well as upstream and downstream of steps (LS, BS and LBS) in the channel. The diversification of features of sediment grain size was analysed taking into account step type and sediment location in the longitudinal profile of the stream channel. The research was conducted separately for fine-grained sandstone (A) and coarse-grained sandstone (B). In addition, the basic sedimentological indicators and the shape parameter of the gravels, as described by the Zingg method, were determined. In order to determine the transport predisposition of the sediments in a specific load, an analysis of sediment distribution was performed on the C/M (C—first percentile and M—median) diagram. The PCA (Principal component analysis) analysis showed that the step type significantly affects the processing as well as the size and shape diversification of mineral deposits, which confirms our hypothesis.
