Abstract

The structure, function, and dynamics of Earth's terrestrial ecosystems are profoundly influenced by how often (frequency) and how long (duration) they are inundated with water. A diverse array of natural and human-engineered systems experience temporally variable inundation whereby they fluctuate between inundated and non-inundated states. Variable inundation spans extreme events to predictable sub-daily cycles. Variably inundated ecosystems (VIEs) include hillslopes, non-perennial streams, wetlands, floodplains, temporary ponds, tidal systems, storm-impacted coastal zones, and human-engineered systems. VIEs are diverse in terms of inundation regimes, water chemistry and flow velocity, soil and sediment properties, vegetation, and many other properties. The spatial and temporal scales of variable inundation are vast, ranging from sub-meter to whole landscapes and from sub-hourly to multi-decadal. The broad range of system types and scales makes it challenging to predict the hydrology, biogeochemistry, ecology, and physical evolution of VIEs. Despite all experiencing the loss and gain of an overlying water column, VIEs are rarely considered together in conceptual, theoretical, modeling, or measurement frameworks and approaches. Studying VIEs together has the potential to generate mechanistic understanding that is transferable across a much broader range of environmental conditions, relative to knowledge generated by studying any one VIE type. We postulate that enhanced transferability will be important for predicting changes in VIE function in response to global change. Here we aim to catalyze cross-VIE science that studies drivers and impacts of variable inundation across Earth's VIEs. To this end, we complement expert mini-reviews of eight major VIE systems with overviews of VIE-relevant methods and challenges associated with scale. We conclude with perspectives on how cross-VIE science can derive transferable understanding via unifying conceptual models in which the impacts of variable inundation are studied across multi-dimensional environmental space.

Abstract

Summary: Background: People with diabetes are at increased risk of hospitalisation, morbidity, and mortality following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Long-term outcomes for people with diabetes previously hospitalised with COVID-19 are, however, unknown. This study aimed to determine the longer-term physical and mental health effects of COVID-19 in people with and without diabetes. Methods: The PHOSP-COVID study is a multicentre, long-term follow-up study of adults discharged from hospital between 1 February 2020 and 31 March 2021 in the UK following COVID-19, involving detailed assessment at 5 and 12 months after discharge. The association between diabetes status and outcomes were explored using multivariable linear and logistic regressions. Findings: People with diabetes who survived hospital admission with COVID-19 display worse physical outcomes compared to those without diabetes at 5- and 12-month follow-up. People with diabetes displayed higher fatigue (only at 5 months), frailty, lower physical performance, and health-related quality of life and poorer cognitive function. Differences in outcomes between diabetes status groups were largely consistent from 5 to 12-months. In regression models, differences at 5 and 12 months were attenuated after adjustment for BMI and presence of other long-term conditions. Interpretation: People with diabetes reported worse physical outcomes up to 12 months after hospital discharge with COVID-19 compared to those without diabetes. These data support the need to reduce inequalities in long-term physical and mental health effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection in people with diabetes. Abstract

Background The long-term outcomes of COVID-19 hospitalisation in individuals with pre-existing airway diseases are unknown. Methods Adult participants hospitalised for confirmed or clinically suspected COVID-19 and discharged between 5 March 2020 and 31 March 2021 were recruited to the Post-hospitalisation COVID-19 (PHOSP-COVID) study. Participants attended research visits at 5 months and 1 year post discharge. Clinical characteristics, perceived recovery, burden of symptoms and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of individuals with pre-existing airway disease (i.e., asthma, COPD or bronchiectasis) were compared to the non-airways group. Results A total of 615 out of 2697 (22.8%) participants had a history of pre-existing airway diseases (72.0% diagnosed with asthma, 22.9% COPD and 5.1% bronchiectasis). Abstract

Summary: Background: The scale of COVID-19 and its well documented long-term sequelae support a need to understand long-term outcomes including frailty. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited adults who had survived hospitalisation with clinically diagnosed COVID-19 across 35 sites in the UK (PHOSP-COVID). The burden of frailty was objectively measured using Fried's Frailty Phenotype (FFP). The primary outcome was the prevalence of each FFP group—robust (no FFP criteria), pre-frail (one or two FFP criteria) and frail (three or more FFP criteria)—at 5 months and 1 year after discharge from hospital. For inclusion in the primary analysis, participants required complete outcome data for three of the five FFP criteria. Longitudinal changes across frailty domains are reported at 5 months and 1 year post-hospitalisation, along with risk factors for frailty status. Patient-perceived recovery and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) were retrospectively rated for pre-COVID-19 and prospectively rated at the 5 month and 1 year visits. This study is registered with ISRCTN, number ISRCTN10980107. Findings: Between March 5, 2020, and March 31, 2021, 2419 participants were enrolled with FFP data. Mean age was 57.9 (SD 12.6) years, 933 (38.6%) were female, and 429 (17.7%) had received invasive mechanical ventilation. 1785 had measures at both timepoints, of which 240 (13.4%), 1138 (63.8%) and 407 (22.8%) were frail, pre-frail and robust, respectively, at 5 months compared with 123 (6.9%), 1046 (58.6%) and 616 (34.5%) at 1 year. Factors associated with pre-frailty or frailty were invasive mechanical ventilation, older age, female sex, and greater social deprivation. Frail participants had a larger reduction in HRQoL compared with before their COVID-19 illness and were less likely to describe themselves as recovered. Interpretation: Physical frailty and pre-frailty are common following hospitalisation with COVID-19. Improvement in frailty was seen between 5 and 12 months although two-thirds of the population remained pre-frail or frail. This suggests comprehensive assessment and interventions targeting pre-frailty and frailty beyond the initial illness are required. Abstract

The time that animals spend travelling at various speeds and the tortuosity of their movement paths are two of the many things that affect space-use by animals. In this, high turn rates are predicted to be energetically costly, especially at high travel speeds, which implies that animals should modulate their speed according to path characteristics. When animals move so as to maximize distance and minimize metabolic energy expenditure, they travel most efficiently at the speed that gives them a minimum cost of transport (COTmin), a well-defined point for animals that move entirely in fluid media. Theoretical considerations show though, that land animals should travel at their maximum speed to minimize COT, which they do not, instead travelling at walking pace. So, to what extent does COTmin depend on speed and turn rate and how might this relate to movement paths? We measured oxygen consumption in humans walking along paths with varied tortuosity at defined speeds to demonstrate that the energetic costs of negotiating these paths increase disproportionately with both speed and angular velocity. This resulted in the COTmin occurring at very low speeds, and these COTmin speeds reduced with increased path tortuosity and angular velocity. Logged movement data from six free-ranging terrestrial species underpinned this because all individuals turned with greater angular velocity the slower their travel speeds across their full speed range. It seems, therefore, that land animals may strive to achieve minimum movement costs by reducing speed with increasing path variability, providing one of many possible explanations as to why speed is much lower than currently predicted based on lab measurements of mammalian locomotor performance.

6. Telemetry and Accelerometer Tracking of Green Toads in an Urban Habitat: Methodological Notes and Preliminary Findings

Abstract

Advancements in tracking technologies provide an increasingly important tool in animal monitoring and conservation that can describe animal spatial behavior in native habitats and uncover migratory routes that otherwise may be difficult or impossible to map. In addition, high-resolution accelerometer sensors provide powerful insights into animal activity patterns and can help to identify specific behaviors from accelerometer profiles alone. Previously, such accelerometers were restricted to larger animals due to size and mass constraints. However, recent advances make it possible to use such devices on smaller animals such as the European green toad (Bufotes viridis), the focus of our current study. We deploy custom made tracking devices, that consist of very-high-frequency transmitters and tri-axial accelerometers, to track toads in their native urban environment in Vienna (Austria). A total of nine toads were tracked, ranging from three to nine tracking days per individual during the post-breeding season period. We demonstrate that our devices could reliably monitor toad movement and activity during the observation period. Hence, we confirmed the predominantly nocturnal activity patterns and recorded low overall movement at this urban site. Accelerometer data revealed that toads exhibited brief but intense activity bursts between 10 pm and midnight, resting periods during the night and intermittent activity during the day. Positional tracking alone would have missed the major activity events as they rarely resulted in large positional displacements. This underscores the importance of and value in integrating multiple tracking sensors for studies of movement ecology. Our approach could be adapted for other amphibians or other animals with mass constraints and may become standard monitoring equipment in the near future.

9. Service evaluation: orthoptic-led teaching of soft contact lens handling for parents in the management of pediatric aphakia

Abstract

To gauge parental satisfaction of an orthoptic-led specialist service for teaching soft contact lens (CL) handling in the management of children with pediatric aphakia. 20 families attending the contact lens clinic completed a satisfaction questionnaire to enquire about their experience of learning how to insert and remove their child's CL. Families were questioned on their experiences with preoperative counseling, practical teaching, additional support and the patient literature that was provided by the orthoptists in the CL clinic. Qualitative data and free comments were analyzed. 18/20 (90%) said they had received good practical insertion and removal teaching. 19/20 (95%) felt they received good emotional support. Only 6/20 (30%) families agreed with the statement that they found learning insertion and removal difficult. 15/20 (75%) families did not feel rushed, and 18/20 (90%) said they could learn at their own pace. All except one family (95%) achieved daily CL handling within a few months, with ongoing support from a multi-disciplinary team. One family surveyed was much earlier in their postoperative journey, but was on track to achieve this imminently. All families (100%) felt they were appropriately counselled preoperatively regarding the need for training and daily CL handling. 95% found the provided written information useful. 8/20 (40%) reported they found insertion harder than removal, 4/20(20%) reported they found removal harder. Teaching insertion and removal skills is an important aspect of managing paediatric aphakia and presents many challenges. Most parents eventually cope well and achieve daily CL handling within a few months, with support from a multi-disciplinary team. Families surveyed were all competent and were satisfied with their experience. The parental satisfaction survey gave our team confidence that our orthoptic-led service works well, orthoptists have the knowledge and skills to provide technical training to parents alongside vital emotional support, and contact lens handling is a rewarding extended role for orthoptists in a multi-disciplinary team.

Abstract

Magnetic sensing is used to structure every-day, non-migratory behaviours in many animals. We show that crayfish exhibit robust spontaneous magnetic alignment responses. These magnetic behaviours are altered by interactions with Branchiobdellidan worms, which are obligate ectosymbionts. Branchiobdellidan worms have previously been shown to have positive effects on host growth when present at moderate densities, and negative effects at relatively high densities. Here we show that crayfish with moderate densities of symbionts aligned bimodally along the magnetic northeast-southwest axis, similar to passive magnetic alignment responses observed across a range of stationary vertebrates. In contrast, crayfish with high symbiont densities failed to exhibit consistent alignment relative to the magnetic field. Crayfish without symbionts shifted exhibited quadramodal magnetic alignment and were more active. These behavioural changes suggest a change in the organization of spatial behaviour with increasing ectosymbiont densities. We propose that the increased activity and a switch to quadramodal magnetic alignment may be associated with the use of systematic search strategies. Such a strategy could increase contact-rates with conspecifics in order to replenish the beneficial ectosymbionts that only disperse between hosts during direct contact. Our results demonstrate that crayfish perceive and respond to magnetic fields, and that symbionts influence magnetically structured spatial behaviour of their hosts. © 2019, The Author(s). Abstract

(La 0.8 Sr 0.2 ) 0.95 MnO 3-δ (LSM) and (Er 0.2 Bi 0.8 ) 2 O 3 (ESB) composite has shown promise as a potential candidate for low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LT-SOFC) cathodes. Here the stability of LSM-ESB composite cathode was tested under a range of temperature between 500 °C and 650 °C in symmetrical cell configuration, and the changes in cathode area specific resistance (ASR) was monitored in situ using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Two different mechanisms govern the LSM-ESB performance degradation in different temperature regions. At 600 °C and below the decrease in ESB conductivity due to the order-disorder transition of ESB significantly impacts the ohmic resistance of the cells. Moreover, the surface catalytic activity of LSM-ESB is directly affected by the order-disorder transition, possibly due to changes in the oxygen incorporation rate of ESB. At 650 °C, above the order-disorder transition, LSM and ESB react to form tertiary phases in as little as 180 h. Our results suggest that bismuth transports through vapor phase and deposits across the porous electrode surface. These results reveal the possible degradation mechanisms for bismuth-oxide based composite cathodes. These findings are important for the future development of SOFCs and the selection of potential cathode candidates that incorporate bismuth oxide.

Abstract

Rodent species, such as monogamous and biparental California mice, produce vocalizations as a means of communication. A temporal examination of vocalizations produced by California mice pups in isolation was performed. Pup recordings were performed for 3 min at ∼10.00 and 14.00 hrs on early postnatal days (PND) 2-4, 7, 21, and 28. Once initial recordings were finished, pups were returned to the home cage with parents and any siblings for 5 minutes to determine if active biparental responses resulted in an enhanced vocalization response when pups were isolated and retested. We also sought to determine whether potential reduction in vocalizations by older pups might be due to procedure-habituation procedure associated with less anxiety and/or possibly decreased need for parental care. Vocalizations were measured in weanling (30 days of age) "naïve" pups not previously isolated. Results show older pups took significantly longer to vocalize, indicated by increased latency before producing their initial syllable compared to earlier ages. With increasing age, pups demonstrated decreased syllable duration, reduced number and duration of phrases, and decreased number of syllables per phrase. No differences in pup vocalizations were observed before and after being placed back with parents, suggestive biparental potentiation may not exist in California mice pups. Comparison of the naïve to habituated weanling pups indicated the former group had more total calls but no other differences in vocalization parameters were detected between these 2 groups. Abstract

In Europe, brown hare (Lepus europaeus) populations have been declining steadily since the 1970s. Gamekeepers can help to support brown hare wild populations by releasing cage-reared hares into the wild. Survival rates of cage-reared hares has been investigated in previous studies, however, survival times in relation to seasonality, which likely plays a crucial role for the efficacy of this management strategy, has not been evaluated. Here we examine the survival duration and daytime home ranges of 22 hares released and radio-tracked during different periods of the year in East Bohemia, Czech Republic. The majority of hares (82%) died within the first six months after release, and 41% individuals died within the first 10 days. Significant differences were found in the duration of survival with respect to the release date. Hares released in the summer months (July and August) survived the longest (on average 103.2 days, SD ± 23.8) and hares released throughout all other months of the year survived for significantly shorter periods of time (on average 20.4 days, SD ± 11.5). The most likely cause of death was red fox predation (38.9%) followed by disease (coccidiosis and other health problems) (27.8%). Three hares (16.6%) were killed by automobile traffic. After six months of radiotracking, we found the average survival time of all hares released was 58 (SD ± 70.9) days. Hares in this study preferred to remain in the vicinity of the release area and the average distance from release point to the center of the home range was 471 m.

15. Exhumation of the North American Cordillera revealed by multi-dating of Upper Jurassic–Upper Cretaceous foreland basin deposits

New low-temperature thermochronology and geochronology data from Upper Jurassic–Upper Cretaceous strata from the North American Cordilleran foreland basin in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota document rapid exhumation rates of the adjacent Cordilleran orogenic belt to the west. Both zircon (U-Th-[Sm])/He (zircon He) and apatite fission track (AFT) thermochronology were applied to proximal and distal synorogenic deposits in order to identify a thermochronometer suitable to record source exhumation during the North America Cordilleran orogeny. AFT lag times from Upper Jurassic–Upper Cretaceous deposits are 0–5 m.y. and indicate a relatively steady-state to slightly increasing exhumation rate between 118 Ma and 66 Ma. These lag-time measurements are consistent with active shortening and rapid exhumation rates of ∼0.9–>1 km/m.y. of the North American Cordillera throughout the Cretaceous. Double dating of the detrital AFT samples was performed on apatites with young AFT cooling ages, in order to test whether or not the young cooling ages represent a signal related to exhumation rather than volcanic activity. Maximum depositional ages using detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology match existing ages on basin stratigraphy. This study indicates that AFT is the most effective thermochronometer to resolve source exhumation from Lower to Upper Cretaceous foreland stratigraphy in the central Cordilleran foreland, and indicates that source material was exhumed from 4 to 5 km depths but was never buried more than a few kilometers ( 8–9 km. Double dating of apatites (with AFT and U-Pb) shows that volcanic contamination is a significant issue that can, however, be addressed by double dating.

The treasure of Roman Hacksilber from Traprain Law, a massive hill fort east of Edinburgh, has been interpreted since its publication in 1923 by Alexander Curle as an illustration of the last days of Roman Britain, and as having been broken up by Irish pirates or raiders in or about ad 405. The attribution resulted from an attempt to link historical or semi-historical sources, in particular about the Irish hero Niall of the Nine Hostages and St Patrick, with an archaeological discovery. Modern scholarship, however, has shown that Niall and St Patrick are to be dated to the middle or late fifth century, not to the late fourth and early fifth century, and so the argument that the Traprain Law treasure was connected with ‘Irish pirates’ fails.

Abstract

The evolution of β-Si 3 N 4 microstructures is influenced by the adsorption of rare earth (RE) elements at grain surfaces and by the viscosity of the intergranular phases. Theoretical and scanning transmission electron microscopy studies show that the RE atoms exhibit different tendencies to segregate from the liquid phase to grain surfaces and different binding strengths at these surfaces. When combined with MgO (or Al 2 O 3 ) secondary additions, the rare earth additives are combined in low-viscosity intergranular phases during densification and the α- to β-phase transformation and microstructural evolution are dominated by the RE adsorption behavior. On the other hand, a much higher viscosity intergranular phase forms when the RE 2 O 3 are combined with SiO 2 . While the RE adsorption behavior remains the same, phase transformation and microstructure are now dominated by Si 3 N 4 solubility and transport in the high liquid phase. By understanding these additive effects, one can develop reinforced microstructures leading silicon nitride ceramics with greatly improved mechanical behavior.

The Marshall Plan was the most effective US foreign policy initiative in the post-war period and a turning point in the Cold War. This paper highlights a very important and commonly neglected aspect of the Marshall Plan – the influence of oil. Oil played a key role in the origins, operations, and impact of the Marshall Plan. Marshall Plan aid for oil preserved markets for US oil companies and shaped Western Europe's energy use patterns and its relations with the United States and the oil-producing nations, especially those in the Middle East. In contrast, the Soviet Union was unable to use oil as an instrument of power and influence in this period. Examination of the role of oil in the Marshall Plan provides important insights into the origins of the Cold War and the factors that shaped the post-war world.

Two series of oxynitride glasses, RE–Si–Mg–O–N ( M = Mg , Al ; RE = La , Lu), have been studied by X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The oxygen 1s photoelectron lineshape reveals a striking difference depending on the rare earth, both in the Mg series and in the Al series. Specifically, the oxygen 1s photoelectron lines of the La doped glasses are broader than the ones of the Lu doped glasses. This result is an experimental evidence that Lu has a larger affinity for oxygen versus nitrogen than La, as theoretically predicted by the first-principles calculations by Painter et al.

We report evidence for magnetic compass orientation by larval Drosophila melanogaster. Groups of larvae were exposed from the time of hatching to directional ultraviolet (365 nm) light emanating from one of four magnetic directions. Larvae were then tested individually on a circular agar plate under diffuse light in one of four magnetic field alignments. The larvae exhibited magnetic compass orientation in a direction opposite that of the light source in training. Evidence for a well-developed magnetic compass in a larval insect that moves over distances of at most a few tens of centimeters has important implications for understanding the adaptive significance of orientation mechanisms like the magnetic compass. Moreover, the development of an assay for studying magnetic compass orientation in larval D. melanogaster will make it possible to use a wide range of molecular genetic techniques to investigate the neurophysiological, biophysical, and molecular mechanisms underlying the magnetic compass.

Selected patients with Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are responsive to immunosuppressive therapy, suggesting that hematopoietic suppressive T cells have a pathogenic role in ineffective hematopoiesis. We assessed T-cell receptor (TCR) clonality through combined flow cytometry and molecular analysis of the complementarity determining region (CDR)-3 of the T-cell receptor-Vbeta gene. We identified clonal T cells in 50% of MDS patients (n=52) compared to 5% of age-matched normal controls (n=20). Three independent research groups present a comparison of their structural analyses of prismatic interfaces in silicon nitride densified with the aid of lanthanide oxide Ln2O3. All three groups obtained scanning transmission electron microscope images which clearly reveal the presence of well-defined Ln segregation sites at the interfaces, and, moreover, reveal that these segregation sites are element-specific. While some results differ across the three research groups, the vast majority exhibits good reproducibility.

Abstract

Tailoring microstructure and composition are critical components for obtaining high-performance silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics. Anisotropic growth behavior of Si3N4 grains can be used to form very elongated grains, which serve to reinforce the matrix analogous to whisker-reinforcement of ceramics. The Si3N4 grain morphology is known to be very sensitive to the particular additive used, especially in the case of the oxides of the rare earths (RE) and Group III elements. However, the atomistic mechanisms by which this occurs has not been understood until now. A first-principles model, the differential binding energy, has been developed to characterize the competition between RE and Si for migrating to the -Si3N4 grain surfaces. The theory predicts that, of the RE, La should have the strongest and Lu the weakest preferential segregation to the grain surfaces. Additional calculations define the adsorption sites and their binding strengths for each of the REs on the prismatic plane of the Si3N4 grains. These predictions are confirmed by unique atomic-resolution images obtained by aberration-corrected Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The combined theoretical and STEM studies reveal that the elements that induce the greatest observed grain anisotropy are those with the strongest preferential segregation plus high binding strength to the prismatic grain surface. Advances now allow one to use first principles calculations to determine the chemical affinity and bonding of the rare earths, as well as other elements, at the grain interfaces; atomistic factors that actually control the growth anisotropy as opposed to the commonly considered ion size, which at best, only provides a trend.

As in fiber-reinforced composites, debonding, which allows the elongated reinforcing grains to at least partially separate from the rest of the matrix, is a critical part of the toughening mechanism in self-reinforced silicon nitrides. In situ high-resolution electron microscopy observations reveal that the debonding path can occur at the interface between the grains and continuous nanometer-thick intergranular film (IGF) or within the IGF depending on the film's composition, which varies with the yttria to alumina ratio in the fixed total amount of sintering additives. Theoretical calculations reveal that the bonding across the interface can be weakened by decreasing the Al and O content (z) of the epitaxial Si6–ZAlZOZN8–Z layer on the grains, which is consistent with the observations of interfacial debonding. However, evidence also indicates that weakening of the amorphous network of the IGF occurs with increase in yttrium levels that can be responsible for the observed mixture of debonding by crack propagation along the interface and within the IGF when the sintering additive contains the highest yttria:alumina ratio.

Short-chain chlorinated paraffins (polychlorinated-[C10-C13]-n-alkanes) were measured in Lake Ontario sediments collected during a lake-wide survey to characterize spatial and temporal trends in contamination. The Lake Ontario average SCCP sediment concentration was 49 ng/g (dry wt), which was somewhat higher than the lake-wide average for sigmaDDT (32 ng/g). Individual stations in each of the depositional basins exhibited the highest concentrations, ranging from 147 ng/g (dry wt) to 410 ng/g at an index station in the Niagara (western) basin. Relative average contributions of the carbon chain groups to total SCCPs on a lake-wide basis were as follows: sigmaC10 = 24%, sigmaC11 = 35%, sigmaC12 = 34%, sigmaC13 = 6.6%. Assessment of core profiles and estimates of SCCP fluxes indicated that an area of the western end of Lake Ontario is heavily impacted (SCCP flux of 170 microg/m2 yr) and potentially influenced by local industrial sources of SCCPs. Maximum accumulation of SCCPs in this area of the western basin occurred in the mid-1970s. The CD95 receptor, also known as Fas/Apo-1, is a member of the Tumor Necrosis Factor receptor (TNF-R) family of death receptors. Apoptosis mediated by CD95 plays a central role in maintaining homeostasis of the immune system. Dysregulation of the CD95 apoptotic pathway has been proposed as a mechanism of oncogenesis by providing a survival advantage to potentially malignant cells. This extended lifespan could allow the accumulation of further mutations leading to malignant transformation. Several mechanisms of resistance to CD95 mediated apoptosis have been identified, including reduced surface expression of the receptor, overexpression of anti-apoptotic molecules, and loss of function mutations. This review will focus on the potential role of the CD95-CD95 ligand system in the pathogenesis of hematological malignancies, with particular emphasis on recent work from our laboratory examining the expression of CD95 in B cell lymphomas. We demonstrate that CD95 mutations occur at low frequency in NHL tumors, however, surface expression of the CD95 protein varies with the subtype of lymphoma. Loss of surface CD95 is more likely to occur in lymphomas of aggressive histology, and is unrelated to the detection of CD95 mutations.

With a Bayesian approach, this model can serve as the basis for estimating dates of important evolutionary events even in the absence of the assumption of constant rates among evolutionary lineages. The method can be used in conjunction with any of the widely used models for nucleotide substitution or amino acid replacement. It is illustrated by analyzing a data set of rbcL protein sequences.

First-principles atomic cluster calculations have been carried out in the local density approximation to understand the segregation behavior and strengthening effects of boron in Ni3Al. The binding energy of boron is calculated in lattice fragment clusters representing the perfect crystal, as well as various defect sites. The agreement between trends in energetics determined for small clusters and periodic supercells indicates the dominant role of boron’s interaction with nearest-neighbors of the host. The stereochemical factor underlying boron’s preferential bonding to nickel atoms in four-fold planar coordination (i.e., sp3 hybridization) suggests a mechanism for the boron-effect in Ni3Al: increased cohesion provides a driving force for B segregation to open sites, such as at Ni-enriched grain boundary sites, and the strengthening is a result of strong localized Ni–B covalent bond formation.

Abstract

There has been much discussion by archaeologists in recent years of the reasons for which ancient hoards may have been deposited and not recovered. There is an apparently clear Roman definition of treasure in the Digest: Thesaurus est vetus quaedam depositio pecuniae, cuius non extat memoria ut iam dominum non habeat. There have been increasing difficulties, however, in interpreting this statement and the versions of it which have been incorporated into modern law. In England and Wales, for example, the uncertainties have even led to a replacement of the medieval law of Treasure Trove with a Treasure Act more suited to present-day conditions. In spite of the fact that most discoveries of treasure were made by chance, without adequate records, much of the argument revolves round the details of the deposits, from which attempts are made to infer the motives of those who made them. This speculation cannot be supported by direct evidence, and so, because our own particular interest is in hoards of Roman silver plate, we felt that it might be helpful first to review briefly some of the ancient documentary evidence for hoards of silver plate which the owner intended to recover, from literature and papyri, and then to publish two such hoards with detailed documentation, one from England in the seventeenth century and one from Germany in the twentieth century, which reveal some of the motives, hopes, actions and accidents which actually occur in such circumstances.

Despite the tremendous growth of recycled and recyclable products in recent years, there exists very little research on how consumers evaluate such products. An experiment was conducted to examine whether consumers' reactions to recycled products is product specific and cognitive or affective and not product specific. Results indicated that consumers are favorably influenced by the presence of recycled material regardless of the type of product, thus supporting an affective evaluation process. Abstract

Chronic NK lymphoproliferative disease of large granular lymphocytes (LDGL) is characterized by the expansion of activated CD3-, CD16+ or CD56+ lymphocytes. The mechanism of survival of NK cells from LDGL patients is unknown but may be related to antigenic stimulation. There is currently no standard effective therapy for LDGL, and the disease is characteristically resistant to standard forms of chemotherapy. We found evidence of constitutive activation of extracellular-regulated kinase (ERK) in NK cells from 13/13 patients with NK-LDGL (one patient with aggressive and 12 patients with chronic disease). Ablation of ERK activity by inhibitors or a dominant-negative form of MEK, the upstream activator of ERK, reduced the survival of patient NK cells. Ras was also constitutively active in patient NK cells, and exposure of cells to the Ras inhibitor FTI2153 or to dominant-negative-Ras resulted not only in ERK inhibition but also in enhanced apoptosis in both the presence and absence of anti-Fas. Therefore, we conclude that a constitutively active Ras/MEK/ERK pathway contributes to the accumulation of NK cells in patients with NK-LDGL. These findings suggest that strategies to inhibit this signaling pathway may be useful for the treatment of the NK type of LDGL.

In this study, the authors report atomic-resolution images that illustrate the transition from a crystalline Si3N4 grain across the interface into an amorphous Lu–Si–Mg–N–O glassy phase. The interface is not atomically abrupt, but is comprised of sub-nanometer-scale ordered regions that resemble a LuN-like structure. These ordered clusters bind to the prismatic surface of the Si3N4 grains at specific low energy positions for Lu adsorption as predicted by first-principles calculations. The ordered regions are filamentary in nature, extending for at least two atomic layers into the amorphous pockets at multigrain junctions before disappearing.

The effects of intravenous morphine (10 mg/70 kg body weight) on ventilation in two groups of subjects, young (age 28-37 years) and old (age 65-82 years) were studied prior to elective surgery. There was no significant difference between the two groups in minute ventilation, ventilatory frequency and end-tidal carbon dioxide before morphine administration. In both groups there was a significant depression of ventilation and elevation of end tidal carbon dioxide tension 20 minutes after intravenous morphine. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the response of these variables to morphine. However, in the older group seven out of thirteen subjects showed frequent periods of apnoea or periodic breathing whereas three of the young subjects had these phenomena at much less frequent intervals. Respiratory depression after morphine is similar in old and young patients but old patients have more change in ventilatory control.

SummaryIn 1971 the British Museum bought a fourth-century silver spoon with Christian symbols. An undated document acquired with the spoon showed that it was the survivor of a hoard from Biddulph, Staffordshire. In 1973 notes made in January 1886, about the discovery of the spoon, were found in a notebook compiled by A. W. Franks. The newly acquired spoon proves to have been one of a hoard of four spoons found at Whitemore Farm, Biddulph. The find-place of the spoon suggests a possible direct link between Chester and Buxton, while its dating adds to the sparse testimony for late-Roman life in the north-west of the province. The style of the lettering may indicate that the spoon was made in the East Mediterranean, and the Christian symbolism adds to the stock of evidence about the cult in the western Roman Empire.

One of the first questions likely to be asked by someone confronted for the first time by the great Oceanus plate (missorium) from Mildenhall (I, pl. VIIa)** is, What was it used for? The answer is that neither it nor any of its fellow flat, decorated plates of silver, whether round or rectangular, to be surveyed in this paper, was everusedfor practical, domestic purposes to serve as table-ware. It is hard to imagine the highly sophisticated and often elaborate relief- or incised-work that they carry being concealed beneath piles of fruit, vegetables, cakes, or portions of meat or fish greasy with gravy or sauce. The present article is the second of a series of three papers dealing with the morphology of the chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster as these appear in the salivary glands of larvae, and to the presentation of a new type of chromosome map. As in my paper on the X chromosome, which appeared recently in this journal, the brief descriptions and the numerous figures have been presented primarily with the view of assisting other investigators in the ready identification of the various landmarks along the two arms of the third chromosome, because it is clear that study of salivary gland material is going to play an important part in the future genetic studies on Drosophila. The cytological map we are able to present now is little more than a skeleton, in spite of the fact that some 33 translocations have been analyzed. The reason for this is two-fold. In the first place, a great many of the breaks are bunched between rather narrow genetic limits. Thus out of a total of 36, 17 fall between the genetic limits of scarlet and pink. In the second place, the markers used in the original experiment were rather widely scattered and neither the time nor, in some instances, have the necessary stocks been immediately available for the finer analyses needed to determine more exactly the genetic limits of these breaks. Miss META SUCHE is making these determinations and by the time this article goes to the printer we should be able to add new data.' I n the meantime, the morphological positions of the breaks will be indicated. No doubt many other investigators have breaks in the third chromosome, the genetic limits of which have been relatively exactly determined, and it is believed that they will have no difficulty in placing these cytologically with the aid of the topographical maps presented in this study. In this way within a few years we should have a large number of gene loci placed within narrow morphological limits. Aside from the usefulness of the topographical maps for the study of all types of chromosome rearrangements and the problems associated with this branch of cytogenetics, perhaps the points of greatest general interest center around the question of chromosome structure. All such ingots seem likely to have been distributed as imperial donatives to troops in the fourth century. They are related to presentation silver plate and other gifts of this type, and more than forty silver ingots are now known from the European Roman provinces. The only other known stamp by Curmissus—or perhaps the curator missionum—is on a broken ingot in the hoard from Coleraine, Co. Londonderry.

Seventy patients with diverticular disease of the colon were treated with a high-residue, low-sugar diet including unprocessed bran. Follow-up for an average of 22 months showed marked relief of symptoms in 62 patients. Bowel habit was restored towards normal and abdominal discomfort relieved. Only seven patients were unable to give up the use of laxatives. Eight patients did not tolerate the bran diet, and one of these needed surgical treatment. None of the 62 patients who took the diet needed surgery.
