Introduction: It has been shown that angioplasty and endovascular stent deployment, used after coronary revascularization, are associated with an inflammatory response. Inflammation has a key role in the complications of atherosclerotic plaque, coronary artery disease (CAD) and in-stent restenosis (ISR). The objectives of the present study was to investigate serum levels of 12 pro/anti-cytokines and growth factors and their relationship with restenosis. Methods: A total of 244 subjects were recruited in current study including unrelated patients who previously underwent coronary stent implantation (between 2014 and 2017) and were subsequently indicated for coronary angiography. According to angiography results patients were allocated into two groups: cases with stenosis more than 50% within the stent (N=79) and controls with stenosis less than 50% within the stent (N=165). Serum was separated by centrifuging the blood for 15 min at 1000 rpm. Serum cytokines levels including IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, IFN-γ, MCP-1, EGF, and VEGF were measured using an EV 3513 cytokine biochip array (Randox Laboratories, Crumlin, UK). Results: The mean age of the NISR and ISR groups were 62.47±9.2 and 59.49±8.48 years, respectively. The diabetes frequency was significantly higher in the ISR group (55.1%) compared with NISR group (30.9%) (p<0.001). There was no significant difference in levels of cytokines between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusions: The results showed that serum levels of pro/anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors did not have a significant difference between NISR and ISR study groups. Objective: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein to HDL-C ratio (HCHR) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein to lymphocyte count ratio (HCLR) are two novel inflammatory indicators, and heart failure (HF) is linked to chronic inflammation. This study sought to evaluate the link between HCHR, HCLR, and HF. Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional investigation using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2015–2018). We used multivariate logistic regression to determine the association between HCHR, HCLR, and HF, followed by smoothed curve fitting and threshold effect analysis, as well as subgroup analyses of the underlying demographic variables to investigate potential impacts. The receiver operating characteristic curves were employed to examine the correlation between each index and HF. Results: This study included 8751 subjects, and multivariate logistic regression after Ln conversion for HCHR and HCLR showed that subjects in the highest tertile of Ln(HCHR) had a significantly higher risk of 45% than those in the lowest tertile in the fully adjusted model 3 (OR = 1.45, 95% CI 1.02–2.07; P for trend = 0.0269), whereas subjects in the highest tertile of Ln(HCLR) had a significantly higher risk of 52% (OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.07–2.17; P for trend = 0.0184) than those in the lowest tertile. Ln(HCHR) and HF exhibited a nonlinear relationship, with an inflection point of -2.71 and a log-likelihood ratio of 0.024. Subgroup analyses revealed no significant interactions between Ln(HCHR), Ln(HCLR), and specific subgroups (all P for interactions > 0.05). The ROC curve indicated that Ln(HCLR) had the greatest diagnostic efficacy for HF (AUC: 0.638, 95% CI 0.607–0.669), succeeded by Ln(HCHR) (AUC: 0.620, 95% CI 0.589–0.652). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that Ln(HCHR) and Ln(HCLR) are positively linked with the prevalence of HF among US adults. Background and aims: Cardio-kidney-metabolic diseases are major causes of premature death worldwide, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) playing a critical role. Inflammation and insulin resistance have been implicated in the pathogenesis of T2DM. This study aimed to investigate the sex-specific associations of metabolic inflammation and insulin resistance with incident T2DM to support personalized prevention and management strategies. Methods: A retrospective cohort was used to analyse annual health examination data from the general practice department of a general hospital in Shanghai between 2021 and 2023. After excluding participants diagnosed with T2DM, cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease at baseline, 1214 adults were followed up for two years. Cox proportional hazards and logistic regression models were used to assess the associations of triglyceride–glucose body mass index (TyG-BMI), the lymphocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (LHR), the monocyte/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR), and the neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHR) with incident T2DM. Results: In the total population, TyG-BMI (all HR/OR > 1, P < 0.05), LHR, MHR and NHR were significantly and positively associated with incident T2DM. TyG-BMI was significantly associated with incident T2DM in men (both HR/OR > 1, P < 0.05), whereas LHR, MHR and NHR were strongly associated with incident T2DM in women (all HR/OR > 1, P < 0.05). The interaction effect between LHR and sex was statistically significant. Conclusion: Sex differences play an important role in incident T2DM. Men should be aware of weight control to avoid obesity-related insulin resistance, whereas women should monitor metabolic inflammation indicators such as LHR for early detection and intervention of their T2DM risk. Background: Insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are significant global health challenges that increase the risk of various chronic diseases. The lymphocyte-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (LHR) has emerged as a novel inflammatory metabolic marker. The present study focused on evaluating the association between the LHR and both IR and MetS. Methods: We analyzed data from 14,779 adults aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2018). To investigate the relationship between LHR and both IR and MetS, we conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses. The reliability of the results was validated through both stratified and sensitivity analyses. Furthermore, we thoroughly examined possible nonlinear associations by implementing a restricted cubic spline in conjunction with a threshold effect analysis. Results: Compared to the lowest LHR quartile, individuals in the highest quartile indicated significantly increased prevalence of IR (odds ratio = 3.72, 95% confidence intervals: 3.01–4.59) and MetS (odds ratio = 11.38, 95% confidence intervals: 8.85–14.63) in fully adjusted models. Subgroup analyses demonstrated that the association between the LHR and IR remained consistent across all subgroups, with no significant interaction effect observed. However, the association between LHR and MetS was more pronounced in female participants. Restricted cubic spline analyses revealed nonlinear associations between LHR and both IR and MetS. The threshold effect analyses identified inflection points at 0.055 for these non-linear relationships. Conclusions: An elevated LHR was positively associated with the prevalence of IR and MetS, indicating its promising role in early screening and disease prevention through biological monitoring. Objective: Bartonella are emerging bacterial zoonotic pathogens. Utilization of clotted blood samples for surveillance of these bacteria in wildlife has begun to supersede the use of tissues; however, the efficacy of these samples has not been fully investigated. Our objective was to compare the efficacy of spleen and blood samples for DNA extraction and direct detection of Bartonella spp. via qPCR. In addition, we present a protocol for improved DNA extraction from clotted, pelleted (i.e., centrifuged) blood samples obtained from wild small mammals. Results: DNA concentrations from kit-extracted blood clot samples were low and A260/A280 absorbance ratios indicated high impurity. Kit-based DNA extraction of spleen samples was efficient and produced ample DNA concentrations of good quality. We developed an in-house extraction method for the blood clots which resulted in apposite DNA quality when compared to spleen samples extracted via MagMAX DNA Ultra 2.0 kit. We detected Bartonella in 9/30 (30.0%) kit-extracted spleen DNA samples and 11/30 (36.7%) in-house-extracted blood clot samples using PCR. Our results suggest that kit-based methods may be less suitable for DNA extraction from blood clots, and that blood clot samples may be superior to tissues for Bartonella detection. Daqu is a typical multi-enzyme and multi-microbes fermentation starter of traditional Chinese liquor. The culture-independent molecular method has become a general method for the study of the Daqu microbial community. To determine the most suitable DNA extraction method of Daqu samples, the effects of different DNA extraction methods on Daqu genomic DNA extraction and amplicon libraries were evaluated. In this study, four DNA extraction methods were selected for the extraction of microbial DNA from two kinds of Daqu. Combined with DNA extraction quality, qPCR quantitative results, Illumina Miseq sequencing results of bacterial 16S rRNA gene, and fungal ITS gene amplicon library, the effects of different extraction methods of Daqu genomic DNA were evaluated. The comprehensive analysis of DNA yield and microbial biomass showed that the DNA yield of the SDS-based extraction method was higher than that of the kit extraction method, and the DNA yield of the in-situ SDS-based extraction method was as high as 5.46 x 104 ng/g, but the DNA purity was low. The qPCR quantitative results of the SDS-based extraction method were 101 - 6 orders of magnitude higher than those of the kit extraction method, and the microbial biomass of the washing-pretreatment plus SDS-based extraction method was the highest, which was 101-3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the in-situ SDS-based extraction method. Whereas the microbial biomass of the DNA extraction kit was the lowest, with only 102-4of the Shannon diversity index among amplicon libraries showed that different DNA extraction methods had significant differences among fungal ITS amplicon libraries, but no significant differences among bacterial 16S rDNA amplicon libraries. The Shannon index of the fungal amplicon library of the washing-pretreated samples were higher than that of the in-situ treated samples. By comparing the operational taxonomic units (OTU) with significant differences among the amplicon libraries, it could be seen that most of the OTUs in the bacterial 16S rDNA amplicon library had differences in abundance, but most of them could be detected in different DNA extraction methods. However, among the fungal ITS amplicon libraries, most OTUs showed a similar trend between different DNA extraction methods, indicating that the DNA extraction method had a significant effect on the extraction of some fungal microbial genomes, and the washing-pretreatment was beneficial to the extraction of fungal genomic DNA. Compared with the four DNA extraction methods, the washing-pretreatment plus SDS-based extraction method was the most suitable for the quantitative and community structure analysis of Daqu microorganisms. Background: Conventional thalassemia screening takes a stepwise approach and has limitations in comprehensively identifying all spectrums of mutations. This study aimed to investigate the performance of third-generation sequencing (TGS) compared to conventional molecular testing. Methods: TGS was applied to validate all known variants detected by conventional testing and to detect missing variants in undiagnosed cases. The study was conducted at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital between December 2021 and April 2022. Results: In total, 19 cases were included in this study, among which 52.6% (10/19) had known thalassemia variants, while 47.7% (9/19) cases were undiagnosed by conventional methods. All 16 variants previously detected were validated by TGS, and TGS additionally detected 43.8% (7/16) thalassemia variants for 36.8% (7/19) cases. Conclusion: TGS could provide additional genetic diagnoses compared with conventional methods. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) can be determined and quantified using the electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis. Identification of the risk factors associated with ECG abnormalities may advise prevention approaches to decrease CVD burden. In this study we aimed to investigate the association between CVD risk factors and minor and major ECG abnormalities in a general Iranian adult population. This study was conducted in 2010 and covered a population of 9035 males and females aged 35 to 65 years recruiting from the phase I of Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) cohort study. The participants were drawn by a stratified cluster random sampling technique. The Bivariate and multinomial logistic regression analysis were conducted considering gender stratification to explore the association of ECG abnormalities with traditional cardiovascular risk factors. There was a significant association between minor and major ECG abnormalities and hypertension (HTN), type 2 diabetes (T2DM), smoking, and physical activity (p < 0.005). There was a significant trend, in both genders, for increasing major abnormalities as the number of CVD risk factors increased. But, only in women, the minor abnormalities increase in frequency as the number of CVD risk factors increased. The results of multinomial logistic regression showed that men with HTN [ARRR = 1.25, 95% CI 0.99, 1.57] and T2DM [ARRR = 1.31, 95% CI 0.99, 1.74] had the highest likelihood to have major abnormalities, although these are not statistically significant. For women, those with HTN had the highest likelihood to have major [ARRR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.13, 1.63] and minor [ARRR = 1.35, 95% CI 1.15, 1.58] abnormalities. Also, women aged > 60 years were more likely to have major [ARRR = 2.01, 95% CI 1.49, 2.74] and minor [ARRR = 1.59, 95% CI 1.20, 2.10] abnormalities compared to women aged < 45 years. Age and HTN were significantly associated with major and minor ECG abnormalities in women, and, on the other hand, HTN and T2DM were associated with major abnormalities in men. Taken together, these findings suggest that healthcare providers should advise preventive approaches to the asymptomatic adults with both major and minor electrocardiographic abnormalities that may predict cardiovascular risk. Background: Hookah smoking has pointedly increased worldwide and could have different harmful health effects. However, long term hookah smoking effects on chronic diseases has not been well studied. This study was aimed to investigate the relationship between hookah smoking with metabolic syndrome and diabetes. Methods: In this prospective study, the baseline data from 3695 participant (35−70 years old) of Bandar‐e‐Kong cohort study in Hormozgan province, Iran were used. In this study, data were collected through the questionnaires designed in the Kong cohort study and 25 mm of blood sample. All analyses were performed using SPSS version 27.0 and the ggplot2 package in RStudio version 2023.06.1 + 524. p < 0.05 was considered a significant difference. Results: The prevalence of hookah smoking was 17.3% in total. Also, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were 35.6, 15.2, 31.2, and 78.0%, respectively. Our results showed that there were statistically significant relationship between hookah smoking and metabolic syndrome, hypertension and diabetes (p < 0.05). In the case of dyslipidemia, hookah smoking was also associated with increase in dyslipidemia (p < 0.05). Conclusions: More evidence is needed to understand the mechanism of hookah smoking and these health effects. As well as, health education and increasing public awareness about the health effects of hookah smoking and implementation of smoking prohibition policies are highly recommended. According to the association between increased micronuclei (MNi) level in reproductive age women and increased risk of congenital abnormalities, we aimed in this study to find the contribution of WTS to women's health in apparently healthy young cases by comparing the variability of MN values in water pipe smokers and non-smokers. Finding the associations between MNi levels and demographic, socioeconomic, reproductive, and lifestyle factors was the secondary scope of this study. This cross-sectional case-control study was performed on 30 premenopausal women (15 cases and 15 controls) who lived in Tehran, according to our inclusion criteria. The mean MN frequency among waterpipe smokers was 28.53± 7.462, whereas the same parameter in the control group was 6.53 + 3.24 (p= 0.001). Non-parametric tests revealed a significant association between MNi and frequency of waterpipe smoking (p = 0.001), age of starting waterpipe smoking (p = 0.003), concurrent use of alcoholic drinks (p= 0.004), and secondhand smoking (p =0.001). In the context of heavy environmental pollution in Tehran, significantly higher MNi frequencies and decreased genomic health in waterpipe smoker women in reproductive age may predispose them to an increased risk of harmful reproductive outcomes. These findings emerge from governmental and non-governmental biomonitoring programs in high-risk women to concern more on unhealthy lifestyles and environmental pollution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Postmenopausal osteoporosis is not only related to hormonal factors but is also associated with environmental and genetic factors. One of the latter is the polymorphism of vitamin D receptor (VDR). The aim of the reported study was to comprehensively analyze the VDR gene polymorphic variants rs731236 (TaqI), rs1544410 (BsmI) and rs7975232 (ApaI) in the Polish population of postmenopausal women. Methods: The study group consisted of 611 women after menopause (their median age was 65.82 ± 6.29 years). Each of them underwent bone densitometry (DXA) of the non-dominant femoral neck and total hip with a biochemical analysis of vitamin D3 serum concentration and genotyping of the above-mentioned single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs); the obtained results were analyzed in the aspect of waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI) and past medical history. Results: The genotype prevalence rates of all SNPs were compatible with Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (p > 0.050). Out of the studied polymorphisms, only rs731236 genotype variants affected DXA, with AG heterozygotes showing the worst bone parameters. Neither patient age nor vitamin D3 concentration, BMI, WC or comorbidities was associated with rs731236 genotype. Conclusions: Out of the polymorphisms studied, only rs731236 genotypes differed among the DXA results, while the AG heterozygotes were characterized by the lowest median bone mineral density. Background: Loss‐of‐function (LOF) variants of the angiopoietin‐like 3 (ANGPTL3) gene are reported to be associated with serum triglyceride (TG) and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL‐C) concentrations and thereby affect the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Objective: In the present study, we examined the association of rs10789117 in the ANGPTL 3 gene locus and the risk of CVD in the group of people who were part of the Mashhad‐Stroke and Heart‐Atherosclerotic‐Disorders (MASHAD) cohort. Methods: One thousand and two healthy individuals enrolled in this study of whom 849 subjects were healthy and 153 subjects developed CVD outcomes after 6 years of follow‐up. After a 12‐h overnight fasting, 20 mL of blood samples were collected for the measurement of fasting blood glucose and lipid profile. DNA was extracted, and the Tetra‐ARMS PCR (amplification refractory mutation system) was used for genotyping of rs10789117 in the ANGPTL3 gene. The genotype frequencies of the variant of rs10789117 in the ANGPTL3 gene were estimated using χ2 tests. Eventually, the statistical analysis was done by SPSS version 20. Results: Individuals with AC/CC genotypes (rs10789117) were found to have to greater risk of CVD events compared to AA genotype (OR = 1.43, 95%CI = 1.01–2.02, p = 0.041). There was a 1.3‐fold increase in cardiovascular events in individuals carrying the C allele of rs10789117 variant compared to non‐carriers (OR = 1.32, 95%CI = 1.06–1.72, p value = 0.038). There were significant differences between different genotypes for serum triglyceride levels within the control group, but this difference was not significant in the group with CVD. Moreover, there was a significant association between CC genotype and CVD risk in the individuals with a normal serum HDL‐C. Conclusion: We have found that a rs10789117 C>A in ANGPTL3 gene polymorphism was associated with incident CVD events, and this may be of value as a risk stratification biomarker in CVD in the Iranian population. Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has become a major health concern with an increasing prevalence and is now one of the leading attributable causes of death globally. T2DM and cardiovascular disease are strongly associated and T2DM is an important independent risk factor for ischemic heart disease. T-wave abnormalities (TWA) on electrocardiogram (ECG) can indicate several pathologies including ischemia. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between T2DM and T-wave changes using the Minnesota coding system. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on the MASHAD cohort study population. All participants of the cohort population were enrolled in the study. 12-lead ECG and Minnesota coding system (codes 5–1 to 5–4) were utilized for T-wave observation and interpretation. Regression models were used for the final evaluation with a level of significance being considered at p < 0.05. Results: A total of 9035 participants aged 35–65 years old were included in the study, of whom 1273 were diabetic. The prevalence of code 5–2, 5–3, major and minor TWA were significantly higher in diabetics (p < 0.05). However, following adjustment for age, gender, and hypertension, the presence of TWAs was not significantly associated with T2DM (p > 0.05). Hypertension, age, and body mass index were significantly associated with T2DM (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Although some T-wave abnormalities were more frequent in diabetics, they were not statistically associated with the presence of T2DM in our study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Serum vitamin D levels are related to a wide spectrum of factors including low sunlight exposure, high oxidative stress, low physical activity and sleep disorders. In this paper we are going to investigate the most crucial parameters associated with serum vitamin D levels in survey of ultraviolet intake by nutritional approach (SUVINA) study with a data mining approach. Material and Methods: Data including demographic, anthropometric, clinical and laboratory information were extracted from the SUVINA dataset comprising 289 subjects who were enrolled into our study. The XGBoost algorithm was used to define the most important features related to vitamin D level in our population. Results: Applying XGBoost modeling for vitamin D level showed that the presented scheme can determine the most important determinants of serum vitamin D level with an accuracy of 91%. Pro-oxidant anti-oxidant balance (PAB), body fat percentage, physical activity level (PAL), age, restless leg syndrome (RLS), and dietary inflammatory index (DII) density were the most important variables correlated with vitamin D deficiency. Conclusion: Using XGBoost and with an accuracy of more than 90%, we showed that the six most important risk factors for vitamin D deficiency are PAB, PAL, age, body fat percentage, RLS and DII density, respectively. Introduction: The development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with lifestyle factors, including dietary patterns. A diet rich in macro- and micronutrients has been reported to reduce the risk of T2DM. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the dietary factors most closely associated with T2DM in subjects within the MASHAD cohort using a decision tree algorithm. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 9704 individuals from the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorders (MASHAD), of whom 5936 participants completed a 24h dietary recall questionnaire. Macronutrients and micronutrients were estimated using Diet Plan 6 software. A decision tree algorithm was utilized to evaluate the most crucial dietary nutrient intakes concerning T2DM. Results: The algorithm showed a high specificity (81.34%) but low sensitivity (34.21%), which could predict T2DM with a low-to-moderate diagnostic ability (AUC=0.58). Based on the decision tree, eight features, including dietary potassium, total sugar, sucrose, riboflavin, thiamin, sodium, total nitrogen, and magnesium, were T2DM’s most critical dietary components. Conclusion: Based on the results, consuming sugar, salt, and vitamin B was the most critical related dietary intake to T2DM. Background and Aims: The fatty acid‐binding proteins (FABPs) gene polymorphisms are related to several metabolic properties. We investigated the association of SNPs rs2241883 of FABP 1 gene with obesity to evaluate the role of FABP1 gene in the pathogenesis of obesity in the population of MASHAD study cohort. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 2731 individuals (1883 Obese and 848 nonobese) aged 35 to 65 years old, were enrolled from the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) study cohort. DNA Quantitation was determined using the NanoDrop®‐1000 instrument (NanoDrop‐Technologies). The rs2241883 polymorphisms were genotyped by double ARMs PCR (double amplification refractory mutation system) reactions. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS 22 and a p < 0.05 was set for statistical significance. Results: The results showed that after adjusting for confounding factors, subjects having the CC genotype for rs2241883 polymorphism were at a higher risk of BMI ≥ 30 mg/kg2 with OR of 1.79 (CI = 1.05–3.07; p = 0.03) and 1.76 (CI = 1.04–2.99; p = 0.04) comparing with reference group using codominant and dominant models, respectively. Conclusion: The results showed that CC genotype for rs2241883 polymorphism is related to an increased risk of the obesity in dominant and codominant models in a population of MASHAD study cohort. Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is still an ongoing problem affecting people's well-being globally. It is known that malnutrition is an important determinant of immune function, leading to an increased risk of infection and severity of diseases. The aim of this study was to characterize the relationship between macronutrients and micronutrients and this viral infection. Methods: This study was a historical cohort including 6539 subjects (57.2% females, 42.8% males) from the Mashhad stroke and heart atherosclerotic disorder (MASHAD) cohort study. Dietary intakes were assessed using a 65-item validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Data on COVID-19 diagnosis was collected from online health records of patients available in the Sina health information system from the onset of the disease to the end of July 2020. COVID-19 diagnosis has been confirmed using a lung spiral CT scan or PCR laboratory test. SPSS software (Version 20) was used for the analysis of data. Results: A total of 154 subjects including 85 men (55.2%) and women (44.8%) were infected with COVID-19. Body mass index (p=0.03) and waist circumference (p=0.01) of the patients along with the protein (p=0.02), total N2 (p=0.02), calcium (p=0.02) and thiamin (p=0.04) content of their diet was significantly associated with COVID-19. After multivariate analysis, dietary calcium remained the only dietary factor that predicted COVID-19 infection (OR=0.94, 95%CI [0.87-0.99], p value=0.04). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that prevalence of COVID-19 may be affected by dietary macronutrients and micronutrients. Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is comprised of a clustering of various cardiovascular risk factors that can also affect bone health. We aimed the associations between MetS and bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular bone score (TBS) in subjects with abdominal adiposity. Methods: Individuals with body mass index less than 25 kg/m2 were enrolled from the SUVINA study and allocated into two groups according criteria of IDF for metabolic syndrome. TBS T-score and Z/T score of fore skeletal region were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). SPSS software was used for statistical analysis and p value 0.05<0 was considered significant. Results: DXA measurements were made in 201 participants, of whom 75 had MetS and 126 did not. Scores related to the neck of femur and total femur, radius Z-score and TBST-score were lower in subjects with MetS (all P<0.05). Subjects with FBG=100 had lower TBST-score (p < 0.05). SBP=130 and DBP=85 in subjects, led to the lower TBST-score, and lumbar T-score (both P < 0.05). Subjects with (LDL-C=160 mg/dl) had lower TBST-score, neck of femur Z score, and total femur T/Z scores (all P < 0.05). TBST-score and scores related to neck of femur, and total femur were lower in participants with serum cholesterol=200 mg/dl (P < 0.05). Conclusion: MetS is negatively associated with TBS and BMD scores. Higher levels of LDL-C and cholesterol were the most associated factors related to TBST-score decrease. Introduction: Depression, anxiety, and stress have been shown to be associated with quality of life and sleep quality. This association did not examine separately in men and women. In the present study, we aim to examine the association between depression, anxiety and stress with RLS, Epworth, insomnia, apnea, PSIQ and QoL by gender in Mashhad-study data. Methods: A total of 289 individuals (143 male and 146 female) aged 50-30 years old who completed the SUVINA study. They completed the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), Pittsburg sleep quality index (PSQI) and quality of life (QoL). For statistical analysis, SPSS software was used for data analysis and p value 0.05<0 was considered significant. Results: Depression scores were correlated with higher scores for RLS, ESS, insomnia, and PSQI in men but inversely related to QoL (P < 0.05). RLS and PSQI was positively correlated with anxiety in women, and subjects without anxiety had lower mean of RLS and PSQI scores than the other anxiety groups (P < 0.05 for both). QoL was conversely associated with anxiety in women. Stress was related with higher scores of RLS, ESS, insomnia and PSQI in men (all P <0.05). Conclusion: OlderAlthough scores for depression, anxiety and stress were higher in women compared to men, the association of depression, anxiety and stress with RLS, quality of life and sleep quality varies between genders and unlike our expectation these disorders were more highly correlated with RLS, QoL and sleep quality in men. Objective: The risk of ischemic stroke with intracranial stenosis is associated with various serum lipid levels. However, the effects of changes in the lipid profile on the risk of in-stent restenosis have not been verified. Therefore, we investigated the association between the occurrence of in-stent restenosis at 12-month follow-up and changes in various lipid profiles. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we included ischemic stroke patients who had undergone intracranial stenting for symptomatic intracranial stenosis between February 2010 and May 2020. We collected data about serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) levels, and calculated the TC/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C ratios at baseline and after 12 months. We conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to verify the association between various lipid profile changes and in-stent restenosis at 12 months. Results: Among the 100 patients included in the study (mean age, 60.8 ± 10.0 years; male: 80 [80.0%]), in-stent restenosis was found in 13 (13.0%) patients. The risk of in-stent restenosis of more than 50% was significantly decreased when TC/HDL-C ratio (odds ratio [OR] 0.22, [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.05–0.87]) and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio (OR 0.23, [95% CI 0.06–0.93]) decreased or when HDL-C levels (OR 0.10, [95% CI 0.02–0.63]) were increased at 12 months compared with baseline measurements. Conclusions: Improvement of HDL-C levels, TC/HDL-C ratio, and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio were associated with decreased risk of in-stent restenosis at 12-month follow-up. Management and careful monitoring of various lipid profiles including HDL-C levels, TC/HDL-C ratio, and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio may be important to prevent in-stent restenosis in patients with intracranial stenting. Nanotechnology is an emerging field in the food industry that will be important for future industrial production to address rising customer concerns and expectations for natural, nutritious, and healthful food items. People are increasingly motivated to purchase unprocessed food or even high-quality processed foods with minimum chemical additives, highlighting the need to investigate natural alternatives for commercial purposes. Natural compounds are becoming more popular among consumers since they are safer than synthetic chemical additions; however, their most functional compounds are sensitive to the adverse conditions of processing and the digestive tract, impairing their use in food matrices, and industrial-scale applications. Nowadays, nanoencapsulation of natural products can be the most suitable nanotechnology to improve stability, solubility, and bioavailability. The nanostructure can be incorporated into food during production, processing, packaging, and security. Despite the many studies on nanoencapsulation, there is still some misunderstanding about nanoencapsulation systems and preparation techniques. This review aims to categorize different nanoencapsulation techniques (chemical, physicochemical, and physicomechanical), highlight eco-friendly methods, and classify the nanoencapsulation systems as groups (polymer, lipidic and metallic). The current review summarizes recent data on the nanoencapsulation of natural compounds in the food industry that has been published since 2015 until now. The involvement of many putative genetic factors makes osteoporosis a complex disease. With increasing longevity of the Indian population, it's now being realized that, as within the West, osteoporotic fractures are also a significant explanation for morbidity and mortality in postmenopausal women. Studies have suggested that the genetic component liable for bone mass could be linked to single nucleotide polymorphisms. Therefore, this study is aimed to research the role of seven gene polymorphisms previously associated with bone phenotype in a cohort of postmenopausal South Indian women from Tamil Nadu. The subjects for the study (n = 300) included 100 osteoporotic women (age 59.3 ± 9.26), 100 osteopenic women (age 55.6 ± 8.17) and 100 non-osteoporotic women as controls (age 55.4 ± 8.85).Genetic polymorphisms were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Case–control genetic association analysis of BsmI of the VDR and BstBI of the PTH gene showed a significant allelic association with low bone mineral density amongst the osteoporotic postmenopausal women. The association of BMD with the VDR gene polymorphisms revealed that the average BMD in the BsmI polymorphism with the recessive genotype GG in osteoporotic women was significantly reduced compared with the average BMD in osteoporotic women with AA and AG genotypes. In the BstBI polymorphism, the BMD in the osteoporotic subjects were significantly lower in the AA group than in the GA and GG groups. These results provide evidence for an independent association between BMD and rs1544410 in VDR and rs6254 in PTH and may contribute in being a possible genetic marker for predicting the disease susceptibility in the population tested. Background: Pancreatitis is an inflammatory disorder resulting from the autoactivation of trypsinogen in the pancreas. The genetic basis of the disease is an old phenomenon, and evidence is accumulating for the involvement of synonymous/non-synonymous codon variants in disease initiation and progression. Results: The present study envisaged a panel of 26 genes involved in pancreatitis for their codon choices, compositional analysis, relative dinucleotide frequency, nucleotide disproportion, protein physical properties, gene expression, codon bias, and interrelated of all these factors. In this set of genes, gene length was positively correlated with nucleotide skews and codon usage bias. Codon usage of any gene is dependent upon its AT and GC component; however, AGG, CGT, and CGA encoding for Arg, TCG for Ser, GTC for Val, and CCA for Pro were independent of nucleotide compositions. In addition, Codon GTC showed a correlation with protein properties, isoelectric point, instability index, and frequency of basic amino acids. We also investigated the effect of various evolutionary forces in shaping the codon usage choices of genes. Conclusions: This study will enable us to gain insight into the molecular signatures associated with the disease that might help identify more potential genes contributing to enhanced risk for pancreatitis. All the genes associated with pancreatitis are generally associated with physiological function, and mutations causing loss of function, over or under expression leads to an ailment. Background: High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) is a biomarker used for risk prediction for cardiovascular disease by assessing low concentration of inflammation. Measurements of regular CRP have become very sensitive with a lower detection limit of 0.3 mg/L. This study aimed to compare and explore the association between CRP and hs-CRP. Methods: Data from 607 consecutive patients referred for cardiovascular risk assessment with hs-CRP were reviewed retrospectively. In total, 570 patients were included in the analysis and classified into 3 (low-, medium-, and high-risk) groups (hs-CRP cutoff: <1, 1–3, >3 mg/L). Correlation between hs-CRP and CRP was assessed with the kappa statistic and visualized with a Bland–Altman plot. The association between hs-CRP and occurrence of the composite outcome (acute myocardial infarction, stroke, coronary intervention [percutaneous coronary intervention or bypass surgery], or death) was determined with Cox regression analysis and visualized with Kaplan–Meier curves. Results: A total number reclassification occurred in 8.6% of the cases for CRP risk groups, which demonstrates an agreement of 91.4% (kappa 0.87; P < 0.001). The correlation between CRP and hs-CRP was significant (P < 0.001), Spearman regression R2 = 0.98. A Bland–Altman plot displayed an average difference of 0.19 mg/L (95%CI, 0.17 to 0.23) between the CRP and hs-CRP. Cardiovascular events were more likely to occur in patients who were older, with hs-CRP or CRP >3 mg/L and a history of coronary artery disease. Sarcopenic obesity is a new category of obesity and is a specific condition of sarcopenia. This study aimed to find the relationship of the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and body water distribution with muscle health and their prospective roles in screening for sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenia. The role of nutrients such as carbohydrates in the relationship was further detected. A total of 402 elderly subjects were recruited. Body composition was estimated by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Sarcopenia was defined by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. The cutoff values were determined by the receiver operating characteristic curve. Mediation analyses were performed using SPSS PROCESS. Higher BMR and BMR/body surface area (BSA) were protective factors against sarcopenic obesity (OR = 0.047, p = 0.004; OR = 0.035, p = 0.002) and sarcopenia (OR = 0.085, p = 0.001; OR = 0.100, p = 0.003) in elderly people. Low extracellular water (ECW)/intracellular water (ICW) and ECW/total body water (TBW) were negatively correlated with the skeletal muscle index (SMI). The intake of dietary carbohydrates in people with sarcopenic obesity was the lowest, but in subjects with obesity, it was the highest (p = 0.023). The results of the moderated mediation model showed that BMR fully mediated the positive relationship between carbohydrates and SMI, which was more obvious in the population with an abnormal body water distribution. BMR or BMR/BSA had the potential role of predicting a higher risk of sarcopenic obesity and sarcopenia. Higher BMR and lower ECW/ICW and ECW/TBW may benefit muscle health. The overconsumption of carbohydrates (especially > AMDR) might be a risk factor for obesity. Objectives: Extraction of DNA and RNA is the first step in genomics and transcriptomics studies. Phenolchloroform method for DNA extraction has been the widely used method. However, this method is relatively expensive and time-consuming. The objective of the present study was to validate a cost and timeeffective protocol that will reduce the burden of molecular biology-based research and make a difference in laboratories with limited resources. Methods: A comparative study was conducted at Syed Qamer Alam Research Laboratory, Shifa College of Medicine; from February, 2021 to August, 2021. TRIzolTM method was used to extract RNA from blood samples of coronary artery disease patients and remnant was used to extract DNA. The quantity, purity and integrity of the extracted DNA by both methods (TRIzol and phenol-chloroform) was examined. PCR product amplification was performed with thrombomodulin (THBD) gene to validate the characteristic of the extracted DNA and its efficiency for downstream experiments. Results: The DNA yield in the TRIzolTM method was three-fold higher than phenol chloroform method. Both methods showed intact genomic DNA on the agarose gel, and extracted DNA was efficient for PCR amplification. Conclusion: The TRIzolTM method for RNA and DNA co-extraction is fast, simple and economical technique. So, it can be adopted for routine molecular biology analyses in limited resources setup. Stainless steel (316L SS) is commonly used to build coronary artery stents for the treatment of occluded arteries. However, tissues in contact with the stent may develop inflammation that can lead to restenosis. The natural substances derived from normal diet provide a pool of candidates that have potential to treat cardiovascular diseases. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3- O -gallate (EGCG), a polyphenolic flavonoid present in green tea, has antioxidant, antithrombogenic, and anti-inflammatory effects, and may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate whether EGCG has an anti-inflammatory effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) attached to the surface of 316L SS. We evaluated cell proliferation using the dimethyl thiazolyl tetrazolium bromide method in HUVECs after treatment with EGCG. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assessed the level of inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in HUVECs. We further investigated the regulatory mechanisms of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3)/NF-κB signaling pathway in HUVECs by Western-blot analysis. We found that HUVECs cultured on 316L SS had increased cell proliferation and inflammation, and these can be inhibited by treatment with EGCG. EGCG reduced the secretion of IL-6 and TNF and decreased the expression of STAT3 and NF-κB in HUVECs cultured on 316L SS. Consequently, our study demonstrated that EGCG treatment ameliorates the proliferation of HUVEC when cultured with 316L SS, potentially by modulating the inflammation responses via the STAT3/NF-κB signaling pathways. Dietary inflammatory potential has been proven to be correlated with the incidence of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, the evidence regarding the impact of dietary inflammatory patterns on long-term mortality is scarce. This cohort study aims to investigate the dietary inflammatory pattern of the general US individuals by baseline glycemic status and to estimate its association with long-term mortality. A total of 20,762 general American adults with different glycemic statuses from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. We extracted 24-h dietary information, and the dietary inflammatory index (DII) was calculated. The outcomes were defined as 5-year all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Compared with the normoglycemia group, individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes had higher DII scores (overall weighted p < 0.001). Compared with low DII scores, participants with high DII scores were at a higher risk of long-term all-cause mortality (HR: 1.597, 95% CI: 1.370, 1.861; p < 0.001) and cardiovascular mortality (HR: 2.036, 95% CI: 1.458, 2.844; p < 0.001). The results were stable after adjusting for potential confounders. Moreover, the prognostic value of DII for long-term all-cause mortality existed only in diabetic individuals but not in the normoglycemia or prediabetes group (p for interaction = 0.006). In conclusion, compared to the normoglycemia or prediabetes groups, participants with diabetes had a higher DII score, which indicates a greater pro-inflammatory potential. Objective. Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by inflamed nodules, cysts, deep abscesses, draining sinuses in the axillae, inguinal, and anogenital regions. Mutations in the NCSTN gene have been perceived to be responsible for the major underlying changes in the disorder. The purpose of this study is to identify a novel gene mutation in a Chinese family with HS. Methods. A Chinese family with HS present was investigated. The proband had manifested with multiple draining sinuses on the posterior neck, chest, bilateral axillae, and perineal regions. DNA was isolated from the peripheral blood of the family members. The encoding exons with introns of the NCSTN gene were analyzed by polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and direct DNA sequencing. Sanger sequencing was performed to confirm the next-generation sequencing results and to analyze each mutation's familial segregation. Furthermore, the identified mutation was localized onto a 3D structure model using the DeepView Swiss-PdbViewer 4.1 software. Results. In this family comprising 10 HS patients, one novel mutation of the NCSTN gene was identified, involving a deletion mutation (c.447delC(p.N150Ifs ∗ 52)) in the NCSTN gene resulting in a frameshift and the new formation of a hydrogen bond. Introduction: Diabetes (DM) is a type of metabolic disorder that its types are generated by collectingof genetic and environmental risk agents. Here, the association between HSPB1 polymorphism as a genetic risk factor and DM was investigated. Methods: Total 690 participants from MASHAD cohort study population were recruited into the study. Anti-HSP-27level was assessed followed by genotyping using Taqman®-probes-based assay. Anthropometric, demographic and hematological/biochemical characteristics were evaluated. Kaplan-Meier curves were utilized, while logistic regression models were used to assess the association of the genetic variant with clinical characteristics of population. Results: Finds was shown there are meaningful differences among groups of age, height, waist circumference, systolic blood pressure, FBG,TG, HDL-C, and hs-CRP, and was no big -significant difference between theexists in different HSP27 SNP in the two studied groups (with and without DM), also was no remarkable relation between genetic forms of HSPB1and T2DM. This investigation was the first research that analyzed the relationship between the genetic type of the HSPB1 gene (rs2868371) and Type 2 diabetes (DM2). In our population, the CC genotype (%68.1) had a higher prevalence versus GC (%26.6) and GG (%5.3) genotypes and the data shown that no genetic difference of HSPB1 gene polymorphism (rs2868371) was related with DM2. We aimed to investigate prognostic factors of in-stent restenosis (ISR) within 3 years in older acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation and establish a clinical model for predicting ISR. We retrospectively collected 215 older ACS patients who followed coronary angiography (CAG) after DES implantation, divided into ISR group and non in-stent restenosis (non-ISR) group according to the results of reviewed CAG. Logistic regression analysis was performed to screen independent predictors related to ISR and build the clinical predictive model, which clinical application was assessed by decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC). Kaplan-Meier survival curves for ISR by independent predictors. In multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the red cell distribution width (RDW) was higher in ISR group compared with non-ISR (odds ratio (OR) = 1.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14–2.08, p < 0.01). Instead, a negative correlation was observed between minimum stent diameter and ISR (OR = 0.28, 95%CI:0.09-0.86, p = 0.03). A novel nomogram composed of these significant features presented a concordance index (C-index) of 0.710, DCA and CIC suggested that the predictive nomogram had clinical utility. Schoenfeld residuals showed the model RDW ≥ 12.6% with minimum stent diameter <3 mm was consistent with the proportional risk assumption. The Kaplan-Meier estimate for ISR showed statistical significance. Waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) is an emerging behavior worldwide, especially among the youth. It continues to spike in the Middle-Eastern region. WTS is associated with many harmful health-related outcomes. Objective: Herein, the attitude, knowledge, and factors affecting the knowledge of university students toward the detrimental effects of WTS were examined. This was a cross-sectional study where university students filled an online questionnaire that was available between October 2019 and May 2020. A total of 966 questionnaires were filled. About 40% of participants were current waterpipe smokers. Around 30% of participants stated that WTS is not addictive, and about third of them indicated that smoking waterpipe is an essential part of social gathering and is socially accepted behavior. Half of participants (55.8%) were knowledgeable about the major harmful consequences of WTS. Older students were more knowledgeable as compared to younger ones. In contrast, students from non-medical colleges and waterpipe smokers were less knowledgeable in comparison to those in medical colleges and non-smokers, respectively. Background: Genetic factors play an important role in susceptibility to methamphetamine dependency. In this line, protein that interact with C-kinase-1 (PICK1) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) genes are linked to methamphetamine dependence (substance use disorder). Thus, in a case–control study, we investigated the association between polymorphisms of PICK1 and BDNF genes and methamphetamine dependence in an Iranian population. Methods: Total of 235 cases and 204 controls were recruited in a period between 2015 to 2018. The PICK1-rs713729, -rs2076369 and BDNF-rs6265 genotypes were determined via ARMS-PCR assay. Statistical analysis was performed, using SPSS 20.0, PHASE 2.1.1 program as well as SNP Analyzer 2.0. Results: In the present study, two polymorphisms including PICK1-rs713729 (OR 1.38 (CI 1.08–1.52; P-value 0.004) in multiplicative and dominant models, and PICK1-rs2076369 (OR 1.31 (CI 1.10–1.56; P-value 0.002) in multiplicative, dominant and co-dominant models were associated with the risk of methamphetamine abuse. Moreover, haplotype analysis showed a significant association of haplotype AG (OR 2.50 (CI 1.50–4.16; P-value 0.0002) in dominant, recessive and co-dominant models, and haplotype TT (OR 0.67 (CI 0.50–0.91; P-value 0.009) in dominant and co-dominant models with the risk of methamphetamine abuse. None of the polymorphisms in this study had a high level of linkage disequilibrium. Background: The clinical value of monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) in in-stent restenosis (ISR) of patients who have undergone bare metal stent implantation has been studied. However, the predictive value of MHR in ISR for patients who have undergone drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation has not been explored. Methods: Non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) patients who had undergone DES implantation and coronary angiography follow-up at the Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2018, were retrospectively enrolled. Patients were divided into ISR and non-ISR groups depending on the follow-up coronary angiography results. Relative clinical information was recorded and analyzed. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to determine the optimum cut-off pre-procedural MHR to predict ISR. Results: A total of 214 patients were enrolled in our study. The mean period between two coronary angiography procedures was 25.4± 9.8 months. Percutaneous coronary intervention due to NSTE myocardial infarction, a bifurcation lesion, increased platelet count, and a high MHR were the independent risk factors in multivariate logistic regression analyses. Waterpipe smoking has developed into a major and rapidly growing global tobacco epidemic affecting more than 100 million people worldwide. This study identifies and analyzes comprehensively all available data on the cardiovascular effects of waterpipe smoking. Databases PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies published until December 2019 assessing cardiovascular effects of waterpipe smoking. We included experimental, cohort, cross-sectional and case-control studies and excluded systematic reviews, case reports/series and qualitative studies. Studies not conducted in humans or not distinguishing waterpipe smoking from other forms of smoking were also excluded. A total of 42 studies with 46 cardiovascular parameters were eligible for analysis. The meta-analysis included 31 studies with 38,037 individuals. Results showed that one waterpipe smoking session leads to immediate increases in heart rate and blood pressure (P < 0.001). Compared to non-smokers, waterpipe smokers had significantly lower high-density lipoprotein levels (P < 0.001), higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (P = 0.04), triglyceride (P < 0.001) and fasting blood glucose (P = 0.03) and higher heart rate (P = 0.04) with a tendency to have higher blood pressure. Mean heart rate, blood pressure and lipids levels did not differ between waterpipe and cigarette smokers, except for total cholesterol, being higher among waterpipe smokers (P < 0.001). Current level of evidence suggests that waterpipe smoking is associated with substantial adverse effects on cardiovascular system, which seem to be similar to those of cigarette smoking. Behçet's disease (BD) is an autoimmune disease that affects many organs. We aimed to investigate the relationship between BD and these pregnancy‐associated plasma protein A (PAPP‐A), neopterin, and high sensitive C‐reactive protein (hsCRP) parameters. The study included 57 BD patients and 54 healthy controls. After evaluating the active and inactive disease status of the patients, analyzes were performed. When comparing the patient and control groups, neopterin (111.27 ± 37.49; 76.77 ± 38.27 [nmol/L]; P <.001) and hsCRP (11.81 ± 16.8; 3.62 ± 5.06 [mg/L]; P =.001) parameters were significantly higher in patients. Neopterin (117.68 ± 41.67; 94.85 ± 14.75 [nmol/L]; P =.038) and hsCRP (14.68 ± 18.7; 4.47 ± 7.27 [mg/L]; P =.002) found different in active and inactive patients. The sensitivities of neopterin and hsCRP were also found to be high in BD (respectively 93%, 67%). PAPP‐A was especially elevated in skin pathologies (P =.02) and neopterin in joint involvement (P =.03). We think that the use of neopterin and hsCRP can help in diagnosis and follow‐up of BD. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increased worldwide. Tobacco smoking increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Waterpipe tobacco smoking has become a global trend of tobacco consumption and is as common as cigarette smoking. In this study, the effect of waterpipe tobacco smoke (WTS) on the development of metabolic syndrome in rats was evaluated. Adult Wistar rats were exposed for 19 weeks to either fresh air (control) or WTS for 1 hour daily/ 5 days per week (WTS). Central obesity, systolic blood pressure, lipid profile, glucose hemostasis and levels of leptin and adiponectin were evaluated. The WTS exposure increased body weight, abdominal circumference, systolic blood pressure and fasting glucose compared to control animals (P<0.05), consistent with inducing metabolic syndrome. The retroperitoneal fat, lipid profile and levels of insulin, leptin and adiponectin were not affected by WTS exposure (P>0.05). In conclusion, exposure to WTS has detrimental health effects leading to the development of metabolic syndrome in experimental animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetic neuropathy and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) are the main etiological factors in foot ulceration. Herein, we report our experience of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) management, with an analysis of the relationship between the rate of lower extremity amputation, in persons with infected DFU, after revascularization procedures performed to prevent major amputation. This study highlights the role of different biomarkers, showing their usefulness and potentiality in diabetic foot ulcer management, especially for the early diagnosis and therapy effectiveness monitoring. A retrospective analysis, from September 2016 to January 2021, of diabetic patients presenting diabetic foot with DFU, was performed. All patients were treated with at least one vascular procedure (endovascular, open, hybrid procedures) targeting PAD lesions. Outcomes measured were perioperative mortality and morbidity. Freedom from occlusion, primary and secondary patency, and amputation rate were registered. A total of 267 patients, with a mean age of 72.5 years, were included in the study. The major amputation rate was 6.2%, minor amputation rate was 17%. In our experience, extreme revascularization to obtain direct flow reduced the rate of amputations, with an increase in ulcer healing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Red cell distribution width (RDW), one of the biomarkers used to measure vascular ageing, is known to correspond with cardiovascular diseases. As coronary artery disease and erectile dysfunction (ED) are both caused by the same shared pathophysiology, in this study, we compared the RDW values of men diagnosed with ED and those of healthy controls. Ninety‐nine patients who were diagnosed with ED were included in the study. The control group consists of 100 men who presented to our outpatient clinic. Patients' fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels were significantly higher in men diagnosed with ED. While the mean RDW value was 13.49 ± 1.52 in men with ED, it was 12.91 ± 1.13 in the control group. When RDW values were compared between the two groups, the RDW values of men with ED were found to be statistically significantly higher. Multivariate analyses showed that only the patients' body mass index, fasting blood sugar, triglyceride (TG), low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (HDL‐C), TG/HDL‐C ratio and RDW levels' relationship with ED was statistically significant. Although some studies have shown that RDW may be related to some diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer, this appears to be the first study demonstrating a relationship between RDW and ED.
