We construct an upper ocean (0–1000 m) North Atlantic heat budget (26°–67°N) for the period 1950–2020 using multiple observational datasets and an eddy-permitting global ocean model. On multidecadal time scales, ocean heat transport convergence controls ocean heat content (OHC) tendency in most regions of the North Atlantic with little role for diffusive processes. In the subpolar North Atlantic (45°–67°N), heat transport convergence is explained by geostrophic currents, whereas ageostrophic currents make a significant contribution in the subtropics (26°–45°N). The geostrophic contribution in all regions is dominated by anomalous advection across the time-mean temperature gradient although other processes make a significant contribution, particularly in the subtropics. The time scale and spatial distribution of the anomalous geostrophic currents are consistent with a simple model of basin-scale thermal Rossby waves propagating westward/northwestward in the subpolar gyre, and multidecadal variations in regional OHC are explained by geostrophic currents periodically coming into alignment with the mean temperature gradient as the Rossby wave passes through. The global ocean model simulation shows that multidecadal variations in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are synchronized with the ocean heat transport convergence consistent with modulation of the west–east pressure gradient by the propagating Rossby wave. Significance Statement: The purpose of the work is to understand why the North Atlantic Ocean warms up and cools down on time scales of about 40 years. The key finding is that the temperature fluctuations are caused by an oceanic wave pushing the ocean surface up and down and causing ocean currents to change direction, pushing heat into and out of different parts of the ocean, and drawing down or emitting heat to the atmosphere. The findings matter because the warm and cool periods affect the climate of the countries surrounding the North Atlantic. We present determinations of the gas-phase and stellar metallicities of a sample of 65 star-forming galaxies at |$z \simeq 3.5$| using rest-frame far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectroscopy from the VANDELS survey in combination with follow-up rest-frame optical spectroscopy from VLT /KMOS and Keck/MOSFIRE. We infer gas-phase oxygen abundances (⁠|$Z_{\mathrm{g}}$|⁠ ; tracing O/H) via strong optical nebular lines and stellar iron abundances (⁠|$Z_{\star }$|⁠ ; tracing Fe/H) from full spectral fitting to the FUV continuum. Our sample spans the stellar mass range |$8.5 \lt \mathrm{log}(M_{\star }/\mathrm{M}_{\odot }) \lt 10.5$| and shows clear evidence for both a stellar and gas-phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR). We find that our O and Fe abundance estimates both exhibit a similar mass-dependence, such that |$\mathrm{Fe/H}\propto M_{\star }^{0.30\pm 0.11}$| and |$\mathrm{O/H}\propto M_{\star }^{0.32\pm 0.09}$|⁠. At fixed |$M_{\star }$| we find that, relative to their solar values, O abundances are systematically larger than Fe abundances (i.e. α-enhancement). We estimate an average enhancement of |$\mathrm{(O/Fe)} = 2.65 \pm 0.16 \times \mathrm{(O/Fe)_\odot }$| which appears to be independent of |$M_{\star }$|⁠. We employ analytic chemical evolution models to place a constraint on the strength of galactic-level outflows via the mass-outflow factor (⁠|$\eta$|⁠). We show that outflow efficiencies that scale as |$\eta \propto M_{\star }^{-0.32}$| can simultaneously explain the functional form of of the stellar and gas-phase MZR, as well as the degree of α-enhancement at fixed Fe/H. Our results add further evidence to support a picture in which α-enhanced abundance ratios are ubiquitous in high-redshift star-forming galaxies, as expected for young systems whose interstellar medium is primarily enriched by core-collapse supernovae. INTRODUCTION: We sought to determine structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics across subgroups defined based on relative cognitive domain impairments using data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) and to compare cognitively defined to imaging‐defined subgroups. METHODS: We used data from 584 people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) (461 amyloid positive, 123 unknown amyloid status) and 118 amyloid‐negative controls. We used voxel‐based morphometry to compare gray matter volume (GMV) for each group compared to controls and to AD‐Memory. RESULTS: There was pronounced bilateral lower medial temporal lobe atrophy with relative cortical sparing for AD‐Memory, lower left hemisphere GMV for AD‐Language, anterior lower GMV for AD‐Executive, and posterior lower GMV for AD‐Visuospatial. Formal asymmetry comparisons showed substantially more asymmetry in the AD‐Language group than any other group (p = 1.15 × 10−10). For overlap between imaging‐defined and cognitively defined subgroups, AD‐Memory matched up with an imaging‐defined limbic predominant group. Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) forms north of the Subantarctic Front, in regions of deep winter mixed layers, and is important to the absorption and storage of anthropogenic CO2 and heat. Two SAMW pools exist in the Pacific, a lighter Central mode (CPSAMW), and a denser Southeast mode (SEPSAMW). Both have experienced significant interannual variability in thickness and properties in recent years. We compute mixed layer temperature and salinity budgets for the two SAMW formation regions, to determine the relative contribution of processes driving variability in the properties of mixed layers that subduct to form SAMW. The dominant drivers of temperature and salinity variability are shown to be surface fluxes, horizontal advection, and entrainment of deeper water. Salt advection into each SAMW formation region is found to be strongly correlated with changes in sea ice area in the northern Ross Sea, with lags of up to 2 years. Further correlation is found between meridional salt advection in the southeast Pacific formation regions, and sea ice area in the northern Amundsen/Bellingshausen seas, suggesting that freshwater derived from sea ice melt reaches the SEPSAMW formation region within 6 months. In 2016, strong advective freshening of the SEPSAMW formation region, linked to increased winter sea ice in the Amundsen/Bellingshausen seas, led to anomalously fresh mixed layers. However, a regime change in Antarctic sea ice in 2016 resulted in a subsequent lack of the usual advective freshening in the SEPSAMW formation region, driving increased salinity of the mixed layer the following year. Plain Language Summary: Well‐mixed mode waters that form in the north of the Southern Ocean are particularly important to the ocean absorption of heat and CO2 from the atmosphere. Two types of mode water form in the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean: a Central pool and a Southeast pool. Both have shown significant year‐to‐year variability in recent decades. Variability in the regions where these waters form is shown to be due to changes in air‐sea fluxes, horizontal advection, and the upward transport of deeper water. Transport of freshwater into the mode water formation regions is shown to be correlated with year‐to‐year changes in sea ice area in the Ross Sea and in the Amundsen/Bellingshausen seas. The results suggest that it takes around 6 months for sea ice melt from the Amundsen/Bellingshausen seas to reach the southeast mode water region, and up to 2 years for freshwater from the Ross Sea to reach both mode water formation sites. In 2015, Amundsen/Bellingshausen sea ice was particularly high, leading to more freshwater being transported to the southeast mode water site the following spring/summer. A huge decrease in winter sea ice in 2016 then caused the opposite, and salinity at the formation site was unusually high. Summary: Cardiac surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass is associated with postoperative acute kidney injury and neurocognitive disorders, including delirium. Intra‐operative inflammation and/or impaired tissue perfusion/oxygenation are thought to be contributors to these outcomes. It has been hypothesised that these problems may be ameliorated by the highly selective α2‐agonist, dexmedetomidine. We tested the effects of dexmedetomidine on renal and cerebral microcirculatory tissue perfusion, oxygenation and histology in a clinically relevant ovine model. Sixteen sheep were studied while conscious, after induction of anaesthesia and during 2 h of cardiopulmonary bypass. Eight sheep were allocated randomly to receive an intravenous infusion of dexmedetomidine (0.4–0.8 μg.kg‐1.h‐1) from induction of anaesthesia to the end of cardiopulmonary bypass, and eight to receive an equivalent volume of matched placebo (0.9% sodium chloride). Commencement of cardiopulmonary bypass decreased renal medullary tissue oxygenation in the placebo group (mean (95%CI) 5.96 (4.24–7.23) to 1.56 (0.84–2.09) kPa, p = 0.001), with similar hypoxic levels observed in the dexmedetomidine group (6.33 (5.33–7.07) to 1.51 (0.33–2.39) kPa, p = 0.002). While no differences in kidney function (i.e. reduced creatinine clearance) were evident, a greater incidence of histological renal tubular injury was observed in sheep receiving dexmedetomidine (7/8 sheep) compared with placebo (2/8 sheep), p = 0.041. Graded on a semi‐quantitative scale (0–3), median (IQR [range]) severity of histological renal tubular injury was higher in the dexmedetomidine group compared with placebo (1.5 (1–2 [0–3]) vs. 0 (0–0.3 [0–1]) respectively, p = 0.013). There was no difference in cerebral tissue microglial activation (neuroinflammation) between the groups. Dexmedetomidine did not reduce renal medullary hypoxia or cerebral neuroinflammation in sheep undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The required steam for steam‐assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) oil sands operations is generated using a once‐through steam generator (OTSG) that is fed with relatively poor quality process water. Industries have reported possible solid particle erosion‐related failure in the OTSG boiler tubes because of the transport of precipitated dense inorganic particles. However, the presence of other damage mechanisms, e.g. corrosion, flow accelerated corrosion (FAC), often masks the evidence of erosive wear. Also, industries set an upper limit operating velocity for the OTSG using the API RP 14E guideline, which provides no quantitative erosion rates to determine an operating envelope. This study presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of erosion damage in a SAGD OTSG boiler tube. The results revealed that API RP 14E may not be an effective decision‐making tool for operating the OTSG system. For example, a 10% increase in velocity, even at conditions below the API RP 14E threshold, showed a decrease in the failure time of the boiler tubes by 40%–50%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mean age was 42 years, 68% were female. There were 113 (9%) current smokers and 326 (25%) ex-smokers. Seven percent of the staff were current smokers compared with 19% of the patients. The Fagerstrom test showed that 47% of patients who smoked were moderately nicotine dependent compared with 21% of staff. A third of the staff who smoked did not anticipate health problems related to smoking. Most patients (79%) who smoked disagreed that their current health problems were related to smoking. Although more than half of the current smokers preferred pharmacotherapy, one in two of them did not prefer behavior counseling; with consistent results among staff and patients. Multivariate analyses showed that patients were three times more likely (odds ratio 3.0, 95% confidence interval 1.9–4.7) to smoke than staff.Conclusion: This study reports lower prevalence of smoking among hospital staff compared with national data.
