Abstract Quantifying the carbon budget in rice paddy ecosystems is fundamental to understanding the role of paddy fields as carbon sinks or sources and to mitigating global climate change. This study used a process‐based model of the denitrification‐decomposition (DNDC) model to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon sinks in the paddy ecosystem across China. The simulation results showed that the GHG emissions were 0.147 Pg C‐equivalent year−1 and that the carbon sequestration in rice plants and soils reached 0.253 Pg C year−1 in 2016, indicating high carbon sequestration potential of the Chinese paddy ecosystem. Land management had a great influence on carbon budgets, among which straw residue incorporation rate and nitrogen fertilizer applications had a stronger influence on carbon budgets, particularly for double cropping rice. These results indicate that appropriate tillage practices can reduce GHG emissions and increase carbon sequestration of rice ecosystems while ensuring rice yields.

In the post-COVID-19 era, the co-circulation of respiratory viruses, including influenza, SARS-CoV-2, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), continues to have significant health impacts and presents ongoing public health challenges. Vaccination remains the most effective measure for preventing viral infections. To address the concurrent circulation of these respiratory viruses, extensive efforts have been dedicated to the development of combined vaccines. These vaccines utilize a range of platforms, including mRNA-based vaccines, viral vector vaccines, and subunit vaccines, providing opportunities in addressing multiple pathogens at once. This review delves into the major advancements in the field of combined vaccine research, underscoring the strategic use of various platforms to tackle the simultaneous circulation of respiratory viruses effectively.

Abstract Background BAT1706 is a proposed biosimilar of bevacizumab, a vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A)-targeting biologic used to treat several different cancers, including metastatic colorectal cancer. A comprehensive physicochemical and functional similarity assessment is a key component of demonstrating biosimilarity between a reference biologic and a proposed biosimilar. Here we report the physicochemical and functional similarity of BAT1706 and reference bevacizumab sourced from both the United States (US-bevacizumab) and the European Union (EU-bevacizumab). Method A large range of product attributes, including primary and higher order structure, post-translational modifications, purity, stability, and potency, were characterized for BAT1706 and EU/US-bevacizumab using sensitive state-of-the-art analytical techniques. Up to 18 lots of US- and 29 lots of EU-bevacizumab, and 10 unique drug substance lots of BAT1706, were assessed. Result BAT1706 was shown to have an identical amino acid sequence and an indistinguishable higher-order structure compared with EU/US-bevacizumab. BAT1706 and EU/US-bevacizumab also exhibited similar post-translational modifications, glycan profiles, and charge variants. Potency, assessed using a wide range of bioassays, was also shown to be comparable between BAT1706 and EU/US-bevacizumab, with statistical equivalence demonstrated for VEGF-A binding and neutralizing activity. Conclusion Overall, this extensive comparability exercise demonstrated BAT1706 to match EU/US-bevacizumab in terms of all physicochemical and functional attributes assessed.

Abstract Background Implants immediately loaded full-arch prosthesis in maxilla is always a challenge, especially when the zone 2 is extremely defected. To achieve a satisfying result, different therapeutic alternatives have been proposed, such as zygomatic implant, pterygoid implant; however, precise surgical skills limited its application. Case presentation This study reported a case that an edentulous patient was treated with a new technique, two axial implants and four tilted implants supporting an immediate fixed denture, extruding the cortical bone of the anterior wall of the maxillary sinus to establish the primary stability. Conclusions Two-year follow-up proves that it is a viable choice. Meanwhile, a reliable method for its saving time and money and low level of discomfort for patients is presented.

OX40 (CD134), a member of the TNF receptor superfamily, is a widely studied costimulatory immune checkpoint. Several OX40 agonistic antibodies are in the clinical stage for cancer treatment, among which PF-04518600 is the leader and currently in phase II trial. It has been recognized that one potential mode of action for anti-OX40 antibodies is the deletion of intratumoral Tregs. Thus, a novel human anti-OX40 antibody, BAT6026, was generated with enhanced antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) via fucose deletion to strengthen its Treg depletion activity. This characteristic of BAT6026 differentiates it from other previously reported anti-OX40 antibodies in the field of tumor therapy. The affinity of BT6026 to OX40 was 0.28nM, approximately 8 times stronger than that of PF-04518600. BAT6026 effectively competed for the binding of ligand OX40L to OX40, whereas PF-04518600 only partially competed. Moreover, compared to PF-04518600, BAT6026 activated T cells more effectively when clustered by FcγRs engagement and stimulated SEB-pretreated PBMCs to secrete IL-2 cytokines in vitro. In addition, BAT6026 demonstrated stronger anti-tumor activity than PF-04518600 in an OX40-humanized mouse MC38 tumor model. BAT6026 also showed a significantly synergistic effect on tumor inhibition when combined treatment with PD-1 antibody. Analysis of tumor-infiltrating T cells revealed that BAT6026 treatment significantly reduced Treg cells and increased CD8+ T cells in tumor. Preclinical safety assessment in non-human primates demonstrated a good safety profile for BAT6026. Together these data warrant further development of BAT6026 into clinical trials for patients with cancer.

Abstract Background The introductions of anti‐ human epidermal growth factor receptor‐2 (HER2) agents have significantly improved the treatment outcome of patients with HER2‐positive breast cancer. BAT8001 is a novel antibody‐drug conjugate targeting human epidermal growth factor receptor‐2 (HER2)‐expressing cells composed of a trastuzumab biosimilar linked to the drug‐linker Batansine. This dose‐escalation, phase I study was designed to assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and preliminary anti‐tumor activity of BAT8001 in patients with HER2‐positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. Methods This trial was conducted in subjects with histologically confirmed HER2‐positive breast cancer (having evaluable lesions and an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 0 or 1) using a 3 + 3 design of escalating BAT8001 doses. Patients received BAT8001 intravenously in a 21‐day cycle, with dose escalation in 5 cohorts: 1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, and 6.0 mg/kg. The primary objective was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of BAT8001. Preliminary activity of BAT8001 was also assessed as a secondary objective. Results Between March 2017 to May 2018, 29 HER2‐positive breast cancer patients were enrolled. The observed dose‐limiting toxicities were grade 4 thrombocytopenia and grade 3 elevated transaminase. The maximum tolerated dose was determined to be 3.6 mg/kg. Grade 3 or greater adverse events (AEs) occurred in 14 (48.3%) of 29 patients, including thrombocytopenia in 12 (41.4%) patients, aspartate aminotransferase increased in 4 (13.8%) patients, γ‐glutamyl transferase increased in 2 (6.9%) patients, alanine aminotransferase increased in 2 (6.9%) patients, diarrhea in 2 (6.9%) patients. Objective response was observed in 12 (41.4%; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 23.5%‐61.1%) and disease control (including patients achieving objective response and stable disease) was observed in 24 (82.8%; 95% CI = 64.2%‐94.2%) patients. Conclusions BAT8001 demonstrated favorable safety profiles, with promising anti‐tumor activity in patients with HER2‐positive locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer. BAT8001 has the potential to provide a new therapeutic option in patients with metastatic HER2‐positive breast cancer.

Impervious surfaces are key indicators for urbanization monitoring and watershed degradation assessment over space and time. However, most empirical studies only extracted impervious surface from spatial, temporal or spectral perspectives, paying less attention to integrating multiple dimensions in acquiring continuous changes in impervious surfaces. In this study, we proposed a neighborhood-based spatio-temporal filter (NSTF) to obtain the continuous change information of impervious surfaces from multi-temporal Landsat images in the Qinhuai River Basin (QRB), Jiangsu, China from 1988–2017, based on the results from semi-automatic decision tree classification. Moreover, we used the expansion intensity index (EII) and the landscape extension index (LEI) to further characterize the spatio-temporal characteristics of impervious surfaces on different spatial scales. The preliminary results showed that the overall accuracies of the final classification were about 95%, with the kappa coefficients ranging between 0.9 and 0.96. The QRB underwent rapid urbanization with the percentage of the impervious surfaces increasing from 2.72% in 1988 to 25.6% in 2017. Since 2006, the center of urbanization expansion was shaped from the urban built-up areas of Nanjing and Jiangning to non-urban built-up areas of the Jiangning, Lishui, and Jurong districts. The edge expansion occupied 73% on average among the different landscape expansion types, greatly beyond outlying (12%) and infilling (15%). The window size in the NSTF has a direct impact on the subsequent analysis. Our research could provide decision-making references for future urban planning and development in the similar basins.

In this paper, we present firstly several one-step iterative methods including classical Newton’s method and Halley’s method for root-finding problem based on Thiele’s continued fraction. Secondly, by using approximants of the second derivative and the third derivative, we obtain an improved iterative method, which is not only two-step iterative method but also avoids calculating the higher derivatives of the function. Analysis of its convergence shows that the order of convergence of the modified iterative method is four for a simple root of the equation. Finally, to illustrate the efficiency and performance of the proposed method, we give some numerical experiments and comparison.

In this paper, Thiele−Newton’s blending expansion of a bivariate function is firstly suggested by means of combining Thiele’s continued fraction in one variable with Taylor’s polynomial expansion in another variable. Then, the Viscovatov-like algorithm is given for the computations of the coefficients of this rational expansion. Finally, a numerical experiment is presented to illustrate the practicability of the suggested algorithm. Henceforth, the Viscovatov-like algorithm has been considered as the imperative generalization to find out the coefficients of Thiele−Newton’s blending expansion of a bivariate function.

In this paper, a few single-step iterative methods, including classical Newton’s method and Halley’s method, are suggested by applying [ 1 , n ] -order Padé approximation of function for finding the roots of nonlinear equations at first. In order to avoid the operation of high-order derivatives of function, we modify the presented methods with fourth-order convergence by using the approximants of the second derivative and third derivative, respectively. Thus, several modified two-step iterative methods are obtained for solving nonlinear equations, and the convergence of the variants is then analyzed that they are of the fourth-order convergence. Finally, numerical experiments are given to illustrate the practicability of the suggested variants. Henceforth, the variants with fourth-order convergence have been considered as the imperative improvements to find the roots of nonlinear equations.

In the paper, we tackle the least squares estimators of the Vasicek-type model driven by sub-fractional Brownian motion: d X t = ( μ + θ X t ) d t + d S t H , t ≥ 0 with X 0 = 0 , where S H is a sub-fractional Brownian motion whose Hurst index H is greater than 1 2 , and μ ∈ R , θ ∈ R + are two unknown parameters. Based on the so-called continuous observations, we suggest the least square estimators of μ and θ and discuss the consistency and asymptotic distributions of the two estimators.

Melon (Cucumas melon) is widely cultivated and popular because of its quality value and unique flavor. However, the continuous cropping of melons in greenhouses has various negative effects on the soil environment, melon growth, and quality. Recently, farmers have utilized organic fertilization, especially vermicompost, for melons to resist the harmful effects of continuous cropping. A field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of vermicompost on soil microbes and melon fruit quality via high throughput sequencing and chemical sequencing methods. The results showed that the application of vermicompost decreased (p < 0.05) soil pH and increased organic matter, available phosphorus, biomass, urease, catalase, peroxidase, and alkaline phosphatase. A total of 3447 bacterial and 718 fungal operational taxonomic units were identified in all soil samples. Application of vermicompost decreased (p < 0.05) the relative abundances of Acidobacteriota, Gemmatimonadota, Actinobacteriota, and unclassified and increased the relative abundance of Planctomycetota. Compared with the control soil, vermicompost application resulted in significantly higher bacterial Chao indices and a significantly lower Chao index under vermicompost of 60 t ha−1 based on farmers’ normal fertilizer and significantly lower diversity under vermicompost of 90 t ha−1. Otherwise, vermicompost application increased the photosynthetic rate and chlorophyll content of melon leaves and increased the total sugar, soluble solids, vitamin C, soluble protein, and organic acid contents of melon. The results of redundancy analysis indicated that Proteobacteria exhibited a positive correlation with soil ammonium nitrogen (AN) and pH, while showing a negative association with soil available phosphorus and organic matter. Spearman’s correlation analysis revealed that both total sugar content and central soluble solid content in melon had a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) with Patescibacteria. This study demonstrates that the application of vermicompost alters the microbial community structure in melon cultivation, enhancing fruit quality; this not only promotes a healthier soil ecosystem but also contributes to sustainable and productive practices in melon farming.

Introduction Although task-oriented training (TOT) may provide added therapeutic value to stroke survivors, current TOT guidance offers insufficient advice on standardisation, particularly choices of intensity, for clinical practice. Therefore, this study aims to explore the effects of different intensities of TOT on motor function and self-care ability of stroke survivors.Methods and analysis This randomised controlled clinical trial will recruit 72 participants from a tertiary hospital, diagnosed with decreased self-care ability and upper limb motor dysfunction post-stroke. All participants will be randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups or the control group to undergo intervention for 8 weeks. The participants in the control group (n=18) will receive traditional occupational therapy, while those in the experimental groups will receive different intensities of TOT (50%, 75% and 100% intensity for groups A, B and C, respectively). This protocol designed a more innovative and optimised TOT programme to explore the optimal intensity of TOT on stroke survivors. The primary outcome is Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, and the secondary outcomes include Modified Barthel Index, Wolf Motor Function Test and Motor Activity Log.Ethics and dissemination The Second Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University Ethics Committee approved the medical and ethical protocol for this study (LW2022015). All participants will sign an informed consent form. The results will be presented in scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.Trial registration number ChiCTR2200056390.

Powdery mildew is a fungal disease devastating to crops, causing significant quality and yield loss. As one of the most important fruits in the world, melon also is damaged by powdery mildew. The present study investigated the effect of powdery mildew on the photosynthetic parameters and leaf microstructure of melons, the ultrastructure of the leaf surface, photosynthetic index, chlorophyll content, yield, and quality index of five thick-skinned and differently shaped melon varieties. The net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, leaf water use efficiency, and chlorophyll levels were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in Kangbing F3800 plants compared to the other four varieties. In the case of powdery mildew infection, the total number of stomata in the upper and lower epidermis was particularly high in the Zhongtian No. 8 and Zhongtianxueqiong varieties, respectively. The stomatal length and width were highest in the upper epidermis of Zhongtian No. 12 leaves and in the lower epidermis of Zhongtian No. 8 leaves compared to the other varieties. The total yield and meat thickness were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the Zhongtianxueqiong variety than the others, along with the low edge sugar content. Overall, powdery mildew impacted differently the photosynthetic and leaf surface characteristics of the five melon varieties. Kangbing F3800 emerged as the most resistant variety, making it the preferred choice for introducing and promoting thick-skinned melon varieties in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China.

Watermelons grown in sandy soil are rich in trace elements, particularly selenium, and are therefore also known as selenium-rich sand watermelons. However, continuous watermelon cultivation in the same sandy field decreases soil fertility and degrades the ecosystem, ultimately resulting in low-quality watermelons. Introducing different crops into the crop pattern could alleviate the problems posed by continuous cropping. A field experiment was conducted to explore the effects of different crop patterns on soil microbial communities and soil properties via standard techniques. The results showed that 14,905 bacterial and 2150 fungal operational taxonomic units were obtained and assigned to eight bacterial and five fungal phyla, respectively. Soil bacterial communities primarily comprised Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria, and the soil fungal community was dominated by Ascomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Basidiomycota. Different crop patterns had a significant effect on the Chao and ACE indexes of fungal communities in the soil. The rotation of six years of watermelon and one year of wheat had the highest richness indexes of all the rotations. Different crop patterns had significant effects on soil properties, such as organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), total potassium (TK), available phosphorus (AP), available K, nitrate nitrogen (NN), and pH. The soil OM, TN, NN, and pH of six years of watermelon and one year of wheat cultivation were significantly higher than those of the other three crop patterns. In addition, the soil TK and AP of the continuous watermelon planting treatment were significantly higher than those of the other three crop patterns. Redundancy analysis results revealed many complex relationships between soil properties and soil bacterial or fungal communities. Employing different crop patterns plays an important role in the effective regulation of soil microbial diversity and properties.

Background: Current fMRI-based classification approaches mostly use functional connectivity or spatial maps as input, instead of exploring the dynamic time courses directly, which does not leverage the full temporal information. Methods: Motivated by the ability of recurrent neural networks (RNN) in capturing dynamic information of time sequences, we propose a multi-scale RNN model, which enables classification between 558 schizophrenia and 542 healthy controls by using time courses of fMRI independent components (ICs) directly. To increase interpretability, we also propose a leave-one-IC-out looping strategy for estimating the top contributing ICs. Findings: Accuracies of 83·2% and 80·2% were obtained respectively for the multi-site pooling and leave-one-site-out transfer classification. Subsequently, dorsal striatum and cerebellum components contribute the top two group-discriminative time courses, which is true even when adopting different brain atlases to extract time series. Interpretation: This is the first attempt to apply a multi-scale RNN model directly on fMRI time courses for classification of mental disorders, and shows the potential for multi-scale RNN-based neuroimaging classifications. Ultrasound (US) has become one of the most commonly performed imaging modalities in clinical practice. It is a rapidly evolving technology with certain advantages and with unique challenges that include low imaging quality and high variability. From the perspective of image analysis, it is essential to develop advanced automatic US image analysis methods to assist in US diagnosis and/or to make such assessment more objective and accurate. Deep learning has recently emerged as the leading machine learning tool in various research fields, and especially in general imaging analysis and computer vision. Deep learning also shows huge potential for various automatic US image analysis tasks. This review first briefly introduces several popular deep learning architectures, and then summarizes and thoroughly discusses their applications in various specific tasks in US image analysis, such as classification, detection, and segmentation. Finally, the open challenges and potential trends of the future application of deep learning in medical US image analysis are discussed. Background: In the past decades, substantial effort has been made to explore the genetic influence on brain structural/functional abnormalities in schizophrenia, as well as cognitive impairments. In this work, we aimed to extend previous studies to explore the internal mediation pathway among genetic factor, brain features and cognitive scores in a large Chinese dataset. Methods: Gray matter (GM) volume, fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), and 4522 schizophrenia-susceptible single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) from 905 Chinese subjects were jointly analyzed, to investigate the multimodal association. Based on the identified imaging-genetic pattern, correlations with cognition and mediation analysis were then conducted to reveal the potential mediation pathways. Findings: One linked imaging-genetic pattern was identified to be group discriminative, which was also associated with working memory performance. Particularly, GM reduction in thalamus, putamen and bilateral temporal gyrus in schizophrenia was associated with fALFF decrease in medial prefrontal cortex, both were also associated with genetic factors enriched in neuron development, synapse organization and axon pathways, highlighting genes including CSMD1, CNTNAP2, DCC, GABBR2 etc. This linked pattern was also replicated in an independent cohort (166 subjects), which although showed certain age and clinical differences with the discovery cohort. A further mediation analysis suggested that GM alterations significantly mediated the association from SNP to fALFF, while fALFF mediated the association from SNP and GM to working memory performance. Interpretation: This study has not only verified the impaired imaging-genetic association in schizophrenia, but also initially revealed a potential genetic-brain-cognition mediation pathway, indicating that polygenic risk factors could exert impact on phenotypic measures from brain structure to function, thus could further affect cognition in schizophrenia. Two robust tree-ring width chronologies were developed for the western Tianmu Mountains and the Xianyu Mountains of southeast China. Both chronologies were significantly correlated with each other and were arithmetically averaged to build a regional chronology (RC). The RC had significant and positive correlations with winter temperature before the growing season, Based on this relationship, the average temperatures of the previous December to the current March were reconstructed using the RC chronology for the period 1852 to 2008. The temperature reconstruction was significantly correlated with the winter half-year temperature in the eastern Qinling Mountains of central China, 720 km west of the study region, suggesting a large-scale coherence of winter temperature variability. The reconstruction corresponds well with an East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) index in extreme years and reflects the strong influences of the EAWM in this study region. Thus, there is great potential to use tree-ring chronologies to reconstruct past climate change in southeast China, where little dendroclimatic work has been done until now. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Melamine (MM) is an emerging contaminant which is chemically stable and resistant to oxidation. The oxidation of melamine in aqueous solutions by UV irradiation (15- W low-pressure mercury lamp, λ = 185 nm and 254 nm) in the presence of H2O2 was investigated in this work. The influences of the concentration of melamine, pH, as well as the concentration of H2O2 on the degree of oxidation and decomposition of melamine were examined in detail. Re- suits showed that direct UV light irradiation can destroy MM to produce nitrate at low efficiency (22.3%), and the production of nitrate may facilitate the further oxidation of Mlvi through indirect photolysis. The oxidation efficiency of MM was enhanced by more than two times when H2O2 was added to the solution, which indicated that the cleavage of triazine cycle occurred during photooxidation. For 0.5 mg/L melamine, the oxidation efficiency of organic nitrogen was 50.0% under optimal oxidation conditions (33 g/L H2O2, pH 3 or 10). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We made multi-proxy analysis of 14C, grain size, microfossils, plant seeds, and geochemical elements on samples from a profile in the central West Lake of Lop Nur. The grain size suggests relatively stable sedimentary environment around the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) with weak storm effect, which is followed by frequent strong storm events. Abundant microfossils and plant seeds in this stage indicate a warm and humid fresh to brackish lake environment. C, N, and stable elements are high in content in the sediments while Rb/Sr, Ba/Sr, and Ti/Sr are in a steady low level. In addition, plenty of red willows lived here prior to about 700 a B.P., indicating a favorable environmental condition. The results indicate that the environment in Lop Nur and its west bank turned to be favorable at about 2200 a B.P., where the Loulan Culture began to thrive. Then the climate and environment came to be in the good condition in the Tang and Song Dynasties, when the storm effect became weaker, rainfall increased and the salty lake water turned to be brackish to fresh lake water.
